KEEP Names Nine New Directors

The Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP), a not-for-profit grassroots organization created in 2004 to preserve, promote, and protect Kentucky’s signature multi-breed horse industry, has added to its Board of Directors. The nine additions are Shannon Cobb, Michelle Fischer, Vince Gabbert, Jeff Hall, Katie LaMonica, Jamie MacLeod, James Miller, Bret Shultz, and Donnie Snellings. New officers for the board will be elected at the board’s January meeting.

“Given the hurdles the horse industry faces in the coming year, KEEP may be more necessary now than at any other point in its history,” said KEEP’s Executive Vice President Elisabeth Jensen. “The Kentucky Supreme Court’s ruling that jeopardizes historical horse racing and its contribution to the success of Kentucky’s horse industry presents an immense challenge as we will work to convince the legislature to address the issue. The addition of these board members and the work they have already engaged in on behalf of KEEP and the horse industry is a critical part of the battle ahead.”

In December, KEEP will host an industry-wide webinar to discuss the year ahead for the organization, the advocacy issues it will tackle, and the strategies and approaches the organization will undertake.

Parker, Garcia, Southwest Racing Win Indiana Grand Titles

DeShawn Parker, winner of 5,821 races and more than $74 million in earnings, captured his first leading jockey title at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino when the track wrapped up its 2020 racing season Thursday. The journeyman visited the Indiana Grand winner’s circle 106 times this year. Parker, who led the nation in wins in both 2010 and 2011, plans to spend the winter at Turfway Park.

“This is the best thing of the meet and of my year,” said Parker. “I had some chances the past couple of years to win [the title], but I got hurt and it just didn’t work out. My agent, Jimmy [McNerney], always does a good job but he did an exceptional job this year for me, and I was able to stay healthy. I can’t put into words what this means. This means so much to me.”

Trainer Genaro Garcia won 43 races and over $900,000 in purse earnings to take the training title, his fourth straight. Garcia and Steve Lewis’s Southwest Racing Stable got its second leading owner title with the close of the meet. In addition, apprentice rider Joshua Morales took the Juan Saez Leading Apprentice Award, named in honor of 2014 leading apprentice Juan Saez, who was killed in a racing incident that year.

Gemologist Leads Louisiana’s Acadiana Equine At Copper Crowne 2021 Roster

Stallion manager, David Tillson released the 2021 fees for Astrology, Court Vision and Gemologist today, all standing at Acadiana Equine @ Copper Crowne.

“For obvious reasons we want to provide Louisiana breeders some relief and give them a better opportunity for profitability in the future,” explained Tillson.

Standing three of the top six sires in Louisiana offers proven commodities to breeders and with the new ability for out-of-state mares to join the lucrative Louisiana Bred program.

Gemologist is the leading Louisiana stallion in 2019 and 2020 will stand for $4,000, the son of pensioned Tiznow appears to be the heir as the closest link to the Man o' War line.

Storm the Court, the champion 2-year-old colt of 2019, is by Court Vision, the first stallion Acadiana Equine placed at Copper Crowne. Court Vision, a son of Gulch, will stand for $2,500 in 2021 and currently ranks second in the state by 2020 earnings.

Astrology at $2,500, offers breeders an accomplished young son of A.P. Indy with tremendous value.

Tripartite Group Releases Statement On Diversity

The British Horseracing Authority, The Horsemen’s Group and the Racecourse Association released a joint statement on Friday concerning diversity in racing. The statement comes on the heels of television presenter Rishi Persad receiving negative feedback for speaking out against racism in recent days, responses the groups say they condemn. The BHA invited Persad to join its scheduled meeting on Wednesday to share his views on racing’s approach to diversity.

The joint statement read, “Racing prides itself on the welcome it gives to all. We want to engage fans from all communities and we want talented people, whatever their background, to be able to succeed in our sport. However, our industry’s leaders acknowledge that pockets of discrimination exist in all areas of society, and our sport is no different. All are agreed that this has no place in our industry and that the sport must unite in standing against discrimination of any kind in racing. We can, and will, do better on this front.

“We pride ourselves on the respect we show for our horses and for the sport’s rules and traditions. We are a sport which has embraced diversity in many ways, including people of all genders competing on equal terms. We must welcome constructive debate on any issue, but we expect all those in our sport to show respect to each other when competing and when discussing our sport and its future.”
