Earlier Start Time For Tattersalls Foal Sale

Tattersalls has announced that the four-day December Foal Sale, which starts on Wednesday, Nov. 25, will now start at 10am each day, an hour earlier than originally scheduled in the catalogue.

The change has been made in response to a smaller number of withdrawals from the sale than usual, which would in turn have led to a later finish time than originally anticipated.

Commenting on the amendment, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “There is no doubt that COVID-related changes to our selling procedures combined with full catalogues have contributed to some long days at recent sales and we are keen to avoid this scenario if at all possible.

“The original start time of 11am for each day of our December Foal Sale reflected this year’s smaller catalogue and now that we appear to have fewer withdrawals than expected, we feel it is in the best interests of all participants to start each day at 10am, an hour earlier than published in the catalogue.”

The one-day December Yearling Sale next Monday will commence as planned at 11am and the following week’s December Mare Sale will begin each day at 9.30am.

Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance To Present Free Pedigree Seminar

The Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance (ITA), a newly-founded group dedicated to helping educate, inspire and support those interested in the Indiana horse racing industry, is proud to announce their first educational event. On Saturday, December 5, the ITA will present “Pedigree Research and Purposeful Pedigrees” with guest speaker, Robert Keck, bloodstock consultant at Kentucky's Crestwood Farm.

The event is free and open to anyone interested in breeding Thoroughbreds.

The event is the first in a series of activities the ITA will host in the coming months, all aimed at helping to educate breeders and those looking to get into breeding. Susan Burger, a longtime broodmare manager and now owner of Indiana's Ledgerwood Farm, is the co-vice president of the ITA, and organizer of the seminar.

“The ITA wanted to open up the avenue of continuing education for the breeders of Indiana,” Burger explains. “We want to help breeders, and those interested in getting into breeding, to learn what they need to look for when it comes to booking a stallion to their mare, or even purchasing a broodmare.”

The group is excited to welcome Keck to Indiana for the seminar so he can share his many years of experience as a bloodstock agent and pedigree analyst.

“The knowledge that Robert has is just incredible,” says Burger. “Even breeders who have been active for many years can still learn a great deal from Robert.”

Keck has business degrees from both the University of Louisville Equine Business Administration Program and the University of Southern California. He has completed both the Irish National Stud Course and the Taylor Made Intern Program. A hands-on horseman, Keck has worked for Crestwood Farm since 1994. His recent achievements include planning the matings of two 2019 multiple Grade 1 winning millionaires: Got Stormy and Bowies Hero.

Keck will be discussing what he looks for in researching a mare's pedigree, how to do that research yourself and finding the best fit for mares and stallions.

The seminar will be held at the Painted Hills Clubhouse in Martinsville, Ind., starting at 1 p.m. EST on Dec. 5. Registration is free and refreshments will be provided. Attendees are asked to adhere to COVID-19 regulations by wearing facial coverings and practicing social distancing where available.

TAA Announces Grants Of $3.5 Million To 81 Accredited Organizations

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance announced today that $3,500,000 will be awarded as grants to 81 Thoroughbred aftercare organizations that currently hold TAA accreditation.

Since inception in 2012, the TAA has now awarded more than $20.7 million in grants to accredited Thoroughbred aftercare organizations.

“We are grateful to the TAA's many supporters that have allowed us to award $3.5 million this year,” TAA President John Phillips said. “We know these funds will significantly assist the work of TAA-accredited organizations during this challenging time. As we look forward to 2021, we ask industry participants to continue to support accredited Thoroughbred aftercare and our equine athletes.”

Earmarked specifically for equine care, TAA grants have helped accredited organizations assist more than 11,000 Thoroughbreds at approximately 170 facilities across North America.

TAA-accredited organizations undergo a thorough application and inspection process prior to accreditation being awarded to ensure they meet the TAA's Code of Standards, which covers five key areas: operations, education, horse health care management, facility standards and services, and adoption policies and protocols. Facility inspections are conducted at all facilities housing Thoroughbreds for each organization. Ongoing updates and re-inspections are required of all organizations as a condition of TAA accreditation.

The TAA is supported by members from every aspect of the Thoroughbred industry, including owners, breeders, trainers, stallion farms, racetracks, sales companies, horsemen's groups, foundations, veterinarians, horseplayers, racing fans, wagering technology companies, and many others.

The full list of TAA-accredited organizations, information about the accreditation process, and a list of the TAA's industry supporters is available on ThoroughbredAftercare.org.
