Bravazo Joins Stallion Ranks at Calumet

Bravazo (Awesome Again–Tiz o’ Gold, by Cee’s Tizzy), who bankrolled over $2 million over the course of four seasons at the track, will enter stud in 2021 at his owner’s Calumet Farm. He will stand for $6,000.

Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Bravazo was second in the GI Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at two and earned his way onto the Triple Crown trail with an upset victory in the GII Risen Star S. in 2018. He would go on to finish second, beaten a half-length by eventual Triple Crown hero Justify (Scat Daddy) in the GI Preakness S., and hit the board in the GI Haskell Invitational S., GI Runhappy Travers S., GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and GI Clark S.

“Bravazo was an iron horse on the track,” said Calumet’s Eddie Kane. “He was a fierce competitor with great resolve and determination. I’m confident he will establish this toughness in his progeny.”

The Calumet roster is topped by English Channel (Smart Strike), the number one turf sire by earnings with eighth individual black-type winners, five of those graded, including GISW and Eclipse Award candidate Channel Maker. English Channel stands for $27,500 in 2021.

Half-Sister To Scat Daddy, Lovestruck Stays Undefeated In Tepin Stakes

Godolphin Stable's Lovestruck, the half-sister to the late stallion Scat Daddy, won her first stakes appearance in similar fashion to her career debut on Sunday. The 2-year-old filly stayed off the pace before a strong stretch-drive kick to post a one-length victory in the $100,000 Tepin Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The Kentucky homebred was a one-length winner going 1 1/16 miles over the firm inner turf at Saratoga Race Course on Sept. 7. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott elevated the Tapit filly to stakes company for her second start, where she again won at the same distance, this time over an inner turf course rated good.

Lovestruck broke sharp under jockey Junior Alvarado from post two, being forwardly placed in third position as 20-1 longshot Big Time Lady led the eight-horse field through the opening quarter-mile in 24.05 seconds, the half in 50.50 and three-quarters in 1:16.21.

Turning for home, Big Time Lady was kept inside by jockey Eric Cancel, but Lovestruck pressed on and overtook the pacesetter from the outside. Invincible Gal, piloted by Jose Ortiz, made a strong bid near the rail, but Alvarado set down Lovestruck to repel the threat and hit the wire in 1:47.14.

A stewards' inquiry focused on bumping at the head of the stretch between Big Time Lady and Lovestruck resulted in no change to the order of finish.

“She's been ready for quite a while,” Alvarado said. “We were expecting the kind of run from her that we saw today. There's still room for her to improve. She's still a little bit green and when she got to the lead she was wandering around the track, which is fine. When she puts it all together, we'll get a little more from her.”

Off as the even-money favorite, Lovestruck returned $4.20 on a $2 win wager. She more than doubled her career earnings to $94,600.

“I knew she was going to be sharp, but I like to teach them to relax behind horses and have a nice finish,” Alvarado said. “I didn't want to just let her go. Even though it was a slow pace, I knew I was close enough that she wouldn't have too much to do at the end.”

Invincible Gal, fresh off an 11th-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 6 at Keeneland, outkicked Big Time Lady by 1 ½ lengths for second. The Graham Motion trainee has run second in three of her four stakes starts, adding to her runner-up efforts in the Sorority in September at Monmouth Park and the Selima on Preakness Day, Oct. 3, at Pimlico.

“I had a beautiful trip. I found an opening on the inside in the stretch and I thought I had a shot to get there but the winner, she showed up,” Ortiz said. “She's the real deal.”

Island Treasure, Fifth Risk, Bravo Regina and Lexinator completed the order of finish. Thursday was pulled up and vanned off.

Frost Me was scratched, as were main-track only entrants Hit the Woah, Dollar Mountain and Malibu Curl.

Live racing resumes Thursday at Aqueduct with a nine-race card that features a 12:20 p.m. Eastern first post.

Sequel NY Announces 2021 Stud Fees

Officials at Sequel Stallions New York have announced stud fees for its five-strong roster for the 2021 breeding season.

As was reported last week, ‘TDN Rising Star’ Honest Mischief (Into Mischief) is new to the Sequel breeding barn and will begin his stud career for an advertised fee of $6,500. He will be backed by a Sequel-led syndicate and his breeder Juddmonte Farm will also support the stallion.

Sequel’s perennial leading New York sire Freud (Storm Cat), the full-brother to Giant’s Causeway whose progeny have earned better than $65 million to date, commands a fee of $5,000, while Mission Impazible (Unbridled’s Song), Destin (Giant’s Causeway) and Union Jackson (Curlin) are each available for $2,500. All fees are Live Foal/Stands & Nurses. Multiple mare discounts are available as well as incentives for repeat breeders.

“It is a very tough climate in the sales market anywhere now, but especially in the regional markets. We want to give our breeders a chance to be profitable. The recent sales in Kentucky have clearly demonstrated breeding in Kentucky does not guarantee a profit. The lower stallion fees, no transportation or boarding costs coupled with the lucrative purse structure NYRA offers and resulting awards will give our breeders the opportunity to recover from the dismal 2020 season,” said Sequel owner Becky Thomas.

Churchill Downs Releases 2021 Official Art of The Kentucky Derby

Churchill Downs released on Monday the 2021 “Official Art of the Kentucky Derby” by Breathitt County, Ky. artist Ralph Fugate.

Fugate's style of “impressionistic realism” utilizes bold, vibrant colors to capture the sheer beauty and power of the horse, the colorful silks, the enthusiasm of the crowd and the excitement of the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve and the Longines Kentucky Oaks.

2021 represents the fifth year in a row that Churchill Downs has tapped a talented Kentucky artist to capture the excitement of the Kentucky Derby and Oaks. Ralph Fugate is a self-taught professional sports artist specializing in Thoroughbred horse racing. As a child growing up in Eastern Kentucky, Fugate always loved to draw, but it wasn't until age 25 that he picked up a paintbrush for the first time. Having nurtured an interest in horses and horse racing throughout his life, the artist soon turned his creative passion into painting them.

Fugate's “Official Art of the Kentucky Derby” will be featured on the 2021 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks official racing programs and a variety of merchandise, including Derby and Oaks 147 limited edition artist-signed and numbered posters with embossed and metallic ink treatments. Other merchandise featuring the artwork includes apparel, posters and postcards available at select retail outlets including the Kentucky Derby Museum and www.KentuckyDerbyStore.com.
