Racing Writers Pedulla, Ehalt Analyze the 2020 Preakness Stakes
Bob Ehalt and Tom Pedulla became fast friends when they met on their first day at Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1970. Bob soon introduced Tom to the joys of thoroughbred racing. They have endured some rough moments at the track, with Tom taking exception when Bob repeatedly smacks him on the back with a program as one of their horses launches an all-out drive. Much to Tom’s chagrin and the amusement of onlookers, Bob has been known to call for security as he proceeds to cash a $27 triple.
The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Coming Soon – Horseracing Integrity And Safety Authority
Earlier this week, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act sailed through the U.S. House of Representatives with bipartisan support and is awaiting action by the Senate, whose majority leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, is co-sponsor along with Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. The House version of the bill was co-sponsored by Reps. Andy Barr of Kentucky and Paul Tonko of New York.
McConnell has said he intends to get the legislation passed before the end of the year.
If that happens, what is the timeline for implementation of a new national Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority the legislation would create to oversee all of the medication and safety policies for Thoroughbred racing in the U.S.? Who would comprise the governing body and how will those individuals be chosen? How will medication policy enforcement and drug testing overseen by the United States Anti-Doping Agency differ from the current methods employed by state racing commissions?
In this week's edition of the Friday Show, publisher Ray Paulick and editor in chief Natalie Voss try to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about this major development in the horse racing world.

New Musical Moments for Preakness 145
For the GI Preakness S., which is scheduled to take place Saturday, Oct. 3, The Stronach Group and 1/ST LIVE have partnered with Baltimore’s Darin Atwater and his Soulful Symphony, which will orchestrate the musical transformation of traditional Preakness moments, including the National Anthem, Riders Up, and the Call to Post. Three-time Grammy winner Wyclef Jean will join the festivities and use the platform that would have included the traditional “Maryland, My Maryland” performance to instead reimagine a unique piece. American jazz musician and Lady Gaga’s band leader Brian Newman will collaborate on a contemporary mash-up of Call to Post.
“Preakness 145 was an opportunity for us to take a step back and challenge ourselves, especially as the world looks a bit different than it did last year,” said 1/ST LIVE’s executive vice president of entertainment, Jimmy Vargas. “We are thrilled to partner with [Atwater] and Soulful Symphony and to have Wyclef Jean and Brian Newman bring Preakness traditions to life in an innovative way and to move forward with new traditions that are inclusive of people of all generations and backgrounds.”
Like the other Triple Crown races this year, Preakness 145 will not be permitted to have live spectators. For more information, visit preakness.com.
