With Derby Moved to September, A Good Month for Handle

According to Equibase figures, total wagering on U.S. races in September was $1,039,737,336, a 29.64% increase over 2019 numbers.

The handle for the GI Kentucky Derby day card at Churchill Downs fell dramatically this year. A total of $128.3 million was bet on the 14 races. In 2019, $250.9 million was wagered on the card. Nonetheless, the $128.3 million was the most bet on any racing program this year and was a major factor in the overall increase for September.

With the increase in numbers during September, total handle for the year is off just 2.86% from the numbers posted in 2019, when COVID-19 did not affect racing schedules.

There was more discouraging news when it came to purses. Because of the coronavirus, almost all betting is being done through ADWs, which contribute a lower percentage to purses than brick-and-mortar betting. Some tracks have also had to go several months without receiving contributions from casinos.

Purses were $110,251,841 in September, a 6.75% percent decline. For the year, they are down 29.61% , with $264.7 million less having been paid out this year when compared to 2019.

The lower purse total is also related to the reduction in racing days. Through September, there were 2,509 race cards held during the year. Through September 2019, that number was 3,515.

The average field size in September was 7.88, a modest increase. For the year, the field size has averaged 7.87 for a 6.53% increase.

In The Stud Presented By Kentucky Equine Research: Collected, First Crop Weanlings Of 2020

Collected did an admirable job preserving the memory of his late sire City Zip on the racetrack, and he'll aim to continue that pattern as he sets course on his stallion career at Airdrie Stud.

In the 2020 season premiere of the In The Stud video series, Airdrie Stud's Cormac Breathnach discusses what makes the 7-year-old Collected an attractive prospect for breeders, prior to the stallion's first weanlings going through the ring at this year's fall mixed sales.

Collected started his career on the turf, and he ran second in the Grade 3 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes as a juvenile. The colt was then moved to the dirt at three, where he found his true footing with victories in the G3 Lexington Stakes and Sham Stakes.

At four, Collected became one of the top older males in his division, racking up wins in the G1 Pacific Classic, G2 Californian Stakes, and G3 Precisionist Stakes. He also finished second in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar. In total, Collected retired with eight wins in 15 starts for earnings of $2,975,500.

The In The Stud series, put together by our friends at EquiSport Photos, features up-and-coming names in the stallion ranks, with a focus on those whose first foals are weanlings of 2020. Paulick Report bloodstock editor Joe Nevills interviews farm staff about the stallion's appealing qualities and what mares might work best with him, while giving viewers and potential breeders a chance to see the stallion on the walk and on the racetrack.

Goffs Autumn Yearling Catalogue Online

The Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale holds the unique distinction of being the only yearling sale to take place in Ireland in 2020, and the catalogue for the 2020 edition is now online. Slated for Kildare Paddocks on Nov. 4-5, the sale will offer 461 yearlings, with 61 lots originally from the Goffs Sportsman’s Sale that did not travel to the UK. Past graduates include group winners Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}) and Elysium (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}).

Many established sires are represented, among them Acclamation (GB), Australia (GB), Dandy Man (Ire), Exceed And Excel (Aus), Footstepsinthesand (GB), Holy Roman Emperor (Ire), Kodiac (GB), Make Believe (GB), New Approach (Ire), Oasis Dream (GB), Starspangledbanner (Aus), Teofilo (Ire) and Zoffany (Ire). Younger sires Gleneagles (Ire), Mehmas (Ire) and New Bay (GB) also have yearlings set to sell.

New Bay’s lot 113 is a filly out of a daughter of European champion Banks Hill (GB) (Danehill) from Airlie Stud. Another highlight is an El Kabeir colt (lot 157) out of the SP Bee Eater (Ire) (Green Desert) from Eyrefield Lodge Stud, making him a half-sister to G3 Marble Hill S. winner Minaun (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Ringfort Stud brings a Kodiac colt (lot 211) who is out of a half-sister to Australian Group 1 winner Opinion (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), German Group 3 winner Fox Hunt (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and GSW Anam Allta (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Acclamation (GB) is the sire of lot 263, a colt out of an Arcano (Ire) half-sister to European champion sprinter Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) from the draft of Rathbarry Stud. Mount Coote Stud offers lot 287, a half-brother to MGSP Marksmanship (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by Tamayuz (GB) out of SW Maroochydore (Ire) (Danehill).

“Due to the issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the relocation to the UK of the major Irish yearling sales, the Goffs Autumn Sale will have the distinction of being the only dedicated yearling sale held in Ireland this year,” said Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby. “We commend it to potential purchasers who seek quality and value as the performances of its many winning graduates this season graphically illustrate that the Autumn Yearling Sale features both facets in abundance.  This year’s catalogue contains some impressive commercial types which are further bolstered by a draft of Sportsman’s yearlings making the sale a most attractive proposition.

“Together with our colleagues at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, we look forward to welcoming buyers back to Kildare Paddocks, in person and online, for both the Autumn Yearling and Horses In Training Sales.”

In 2019, 387 yearlings grossed €1,693,600, with an average of €5,860 and a median of €4,000. Following the yearling portion of the Autumn Sale, Goffs will host the Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale on Nov. 5. Its catalogue will be online on Wednesday.

Book 1 Debut For Haras d’Ombreville

It is not an easy year to be making a Book 1 debut but it is an occasion that Matthieu and Solenn Gouesnard of Haras d’Ombreville have been looking forward to, despite the extra complications of the coronavirus situation.

The couple launched their farm in the Pays d’Auge region of France in 2012 after Mathieu had completed stints in Ireland with Ballylinch Stud and as manager of Haras de Meautry. The following year saw their first draft at Arqana and it wasn’t long before Ombreville was associated with a top-class name as, in 2014, they sold subsequent Hong Kong dual Group 1 winner Pakistan Star (Ger) (Shamardal) to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for €180,000 at the August Sale.

“We have been thinking about coming to Newmarket for a couple of years and this year we had a really good crop of yearlings bred on the farm,” says Matthieu Gouesnard. “Regarding the Covid situation, I felt it was important to split the drafts, so we had some in Arqana September, we have some here in Book 1 and Book 2, and we have kept a few nice yearlings for Part I in October at Arqana.”

He adds, “We are going to Book 1 with four yearlings who are well bred and by proven sires—we have one Sea The Stars (Ire) filly, a Lope De Vega (Ire) colt and two Siyouni (Fr) fillies.”

The prowess of Siyouni was given an extra boost on Sunday in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe by his high-flying son Sottsass (Fr), while Siyouni’s top daughters include the Classic winners Laurens (Fr) and Ervedya (Fr).

The first of the Ombreville draft to be offered on Tuesday is lot 140, bred by Raschit Shaykhutdinov, the Siyouni filly from the deep German family of Elle Danzig (Ger)

“She’s out of one of the best German families,” says Gouesnard. “Elle Danzig was a brilliant racehorse first but she became a really good producer and 12 of her foals are winners and seven of those have black type, including the dam of this filly, Elle Same (GB). I know this family well because Elle Danzig was bred by Gestut Wittekindshof and we have had a few of her daughters at the stud. German clients make up about 70-80% of our client list.”

The Newmarket consigning venture follows on from Ombreville testing the water for the first time last year in Baden-Baden, a move which was a natural step in order to cater for the high number of German breeders on their books.

“We opened the farm in 2012 and since the beginning we had very few French clients. We focused on German breeders who were keen to breed in France for the premiums and it really started with Gestut Wittenkindshof. The former manager Karl Jorg gave us support from when we first opened the doors and we sold Pakistan Star for them in Arqana. Karl is well respected by other German breeders and we got some clients because they knew Karl was working with us. So he was a fantastic advert for us in Germany and afterwards we were sent mares by Ammerland, Fahrhof, Schlenderhan, Brummerhof—most of the big German breeders.”

Ombreville’s second Siyouni filly, offered on behalf of the same breeder, comes up early on the second day of Book 1 (lot 181) and also has German roots. Her listed-placed dam Global Magic (Ger) is a daughter of the Japan Cup winner Lando (Ger) and is a half-sister to seven black-type performers from a family which includes multiple Group 1 winners Fame And Glory (GB) and Farhh (GB).

Following her as lot 252 is the Sea The Stars filly out of the listed winner Komische (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) from the family of Classic winners Brian Boru (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) and Workforce (GB) (King’s Best), and completing the draft is the sole colt, lot 301, who is the first foal of listed winner Megera (Fr) (Motivator {GB}).

Next week, Ombreville will also offer two fillies at Book 2, including a first for Tattersalls—a yearling by Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist (lot 745).

Gouesnard says, “The mare was in America and our client decided to bring her back to Europe so she came back in foal to Nyquist. We thought this would be the perfect place to sell her in Tattersalls.”
