Dubawi’s One Ruler Dominates the Autumn

Third in a strong renewal of the seven-furlong Listed Flying Scotsman S. at Doncaster Sept. 11, Godolphin’s One Ruler (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) showed improvement for the step up to a mile to stamp his class on Saturday’s G3 Emirates Autumn S. at Newmarket. Settled in mid-division early racing wide, the 5-1 shot loomed on the outer under William Buick and after taking the lead at the two-furlong pole readily asserted to score by 1 3/4 lengths from Van Gogh (American Pharoah), with another Appleby representative Dhahabi (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) 1 1/2 lengths behind in third. “I think it was a very nice performance on very soft ground and stepping him up in trip has helped,” Buick said. “He probably handled the ground, but will be better on a better surface for sure. The Flying Scotsman at Doncaster was a funny race–I ended up too far back and set him a bit of a task, but today was far more straightforward for him. He showed today that he has improved.”

Brushed aside on debut by the subsequent G3 Solario S. winner Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) over seven at Sandown July 23, One Ruler returned to the same course and distance a month later to beat Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and Latest Generation (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in a maiden that has proven a rich source of subsequent winners. Taking part in another competitive event in the Flying Scotsman, the bay was hampered late on there when third behind the eventual G2 Royal Lodge S. winner New Mandate (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) but gave the impression he needed another furlong and easier surface. Appleby said, “William feels that the horse has enough pace to be a Guineas contender. His dam Fintry was a group 2 winner over a mile and he is a son of Dubawi who will get stronger over the winter, which could build on his speed. I think he is a horse who we would have to consider strongly for the 2000 Guineas.”

Of the third, who is a half-brother to Golden Horn (GB), he added, “Dhahabi is going to be a mile-and-a-half horse and shaped well over today’s trip. It was his third run and he is still learning on the job–he was slow from the gates before travelling into the race well and galloping out strongly. Stepping up in trip is only going to suit and hopefully we will see more improvement as we go further with him.”

As Appleby stated, One Ruler is out of the classy Andre Fabre trainee Fintry (Ire) (Shamardal), who captured the G2 Prix de Sandringham, G3 Atalanta S. and G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil in which she defeated Avenir Certain (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}). Also third in the G1 Sun Chariot S., she was the best of a trio of stakes performers out of the G3 Prix Vanteaux winner and GI Garden City Breeders’ Cup-placed Campsie Fells (UAE) (Indian Ridge {Ire}). Fintry, whose colt foal is by Fastnet Rock (Aus), shares her G3 Rockfel S.-placed second dam Queen’s View (Fr) (Lomond) with the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere third Indian Jade (GB) (Sleeping Indian {GB}).

Galileo’s Lone Eagle Best In the Zetland

Stepping out of nursery company having won a competitive affair at Doncaster Sept. 12, Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm’s Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) made most of the running to land Saturday’s 10-furlong G3 Godolphin Flying Start Zetland S. at Newmarket. Ridden from the break by Silvestre de Sousa to race on the front end, the 16-5 shot was joined by Fabilis (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and shared the lead with that rival throughout the early stages. Seeing him off before coping with Recovery Run (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) on the run to the line, the bay registered a 1 3/4-length success as the runner-up pulled seven lengths clear of Mystery Angel (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}). “It was a nice performance, as it is not easy for a two-year-old on that kind of ground,” de Sousa said. “He is really tough, he’s not very big but he gallops his heart out.”

Runner-up to Recovery Run on debut over a mile at Sandown Aug. 7, Lone Eagle was off the mark over that trip at Goodwood next time Aug. 28 prior to his Doncaster success and despite being steadily progressive had not made any dramatic improvement in that period. Blessed with the rail here over a trip extreme for juveniles which obviously holds no fears, the Ballylinch homebred kept finding as his old rival pressed in the closing stages in a performance that said more St Leger than Epsom Derby where 2021 is concerned. Freddie Meade said, “He’s got a progressive profile and we thought he’d be crying out this trip and would relish it. We were happy about the ground, as he went on it at Goodwood and is a horse that doesn’t over-race and needs stoking up. He’s a horse that would suit Epsom and the Derby is a great thing to think about. He showed he can handle a quirky track like Goodwood and ran on quick ground first time and on good at Doncaster, so is versatile.”

Lone Eagle is the first foal out of the staying dam Modernstone (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}), who was successful in the Fasig-Tipton Ladies Marathon S. and was third in the GIII Dowager S. for the Christophe Clement stable before being purchased for 1million gns by Ballylinch Stud at the 2017 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. She is a granddaughter of the unraced Modena (Roberto), an influential producer for Juddmonte responsible for the high-class pair of Elmaamul (Diesis {GB}) and Reams of Verse (Nureyev), with the latter the winner of the G1 Epsom Oaks, as well as the G2 Yorkshire Cup winner Manifest (GB) (Rainbow Quest). Another of Modena’s progeny Midsummer (GB) (Kingmambo) in turn produced the multiple group and grade I heroine Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), whose son Midterm (GB) by Galileo captured the G3 Sandown Classic Trial and whose half-sister Sun Maiden (GB) by Galileo’s son Frankel (GB) took the G3 Hoppings S. and was placed in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. Modernstone’s second foal is a yearling colt by Lope de Vega (Ire).

Gregorian’s Plainchant Makes All in the Criterium

Plainchant (Fr) (Gregorian {Ire}), who registered a May 17 debut third tackling five furlongs at La Teste de Buch, broke through over six furlongs back there in June and followed up with a first black-type score there once more in the July 26 Listed Criterium du Bequet. Narrowly defeated over six in Deauville’s Aug. 22 G3 Prix du Calvados, she returned with a five-length triumph in Chantilly’s Sept. 18 G3 Prix Eclipse and returned to that Paris venue to make all for a career high in Saturday’s G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte. The even-money favourite was sharply into stride and seized immediate control of the straight dash. Sent clear either side of the quarter-mile marker, she was not for catching thereafter and kept on well under mild coaxing in the closing stages to comfortably hold the late rally of Go Athletico (Fr) (Goken {Fr}) by 3/4-of-a-length. The pair were seven lengths clear of the remainder, headed by Kalahara (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Plainchant, half-sister to a yearling filly by Reliable Man (GB), is the sixth of seven foals and one of three scorers out of a winning half-sister to three black-type performers, namely G3 Prix de Sandringham winner Laugh Out Loud (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}), Listed Pinnacle S. and Listed Chalice S. victress Suzi’s Decision (GB) (Act One {GB}) and G3 Glorious S. third Baghdad (Fr) (Frankel {GB}). Laugh Out Loud is herself the dam of GII San Marcos S. and G3 Gallinule S. winner Platinum Warrior (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), from a family featuring G1 Derby Italiano-winning sire White Muzzle (GB) (Dancing Brave).

Royal Approval Headlines Matron

Runaway last out Kentucky Downs maiden winner Royal Approval (Tiznow) looks like the one to beat in Sunday’s GIII Matron S. at Belmont Park.

Trained by Wesley Ward, the Three Chimneys homebred chased home her brilliant unbeaten G1SW stablemate Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in her first two trips to the post, finishing second as the favorite on debut at Gulfstream May 31 and 17th in the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot June 20. Royal Approval, from the same female family as GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Summerly, returned to these shores with a dominating 6 1/4-length graduation Sept. 9.

“Royal Approval is really training some kind of good,” Ward said. “She’s a really nice filly. She’s a big filly, that’s why she was the favorite going into her first start. The only thing she can’t do is run on the soft turf. We took her over to Europe and she ran dismal. We finally caught a firm turf at Kentucky Downs and she just powered home. It was an extremely impressive maiden win, and her works since have been eye-openers. I’m looking for a big race with her.”

Magisterium (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}), a two-time winner in England for trainer Michael J K Dods, makes her U.S. debut for Christophe Clement and owners Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables LLC and Wonder Stables following a close second in a Newmarket handicap Aug. 8.
