Jeffrey Cannizzo Leaving NYTB Post

Jeffrey Cannizzo, Executive Director of New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. (NYTB), will be leaving the organization Jan. 1 to pursue a newly created opportunity with the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) as Senior Director of Government Affairs. He has served as Executive Director of NYTB since 2008. Previously, he had a successful 10-year career, working in business development and management consulting for Lockheed Martin, Dell and Microsoft.

“For almost 13 years along with our board of directors, Jeff has been instrumental in navigating the most challenging times for New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Racing. Jeff’s knowledge of the industry and his ability to forge consensus among regulators and elected officials has allowed the NYTB to reach new heights as an organization. These attributes will serve him well at NYRA, and we wish him all the best in the future,” said NYTB President, Thomas Gallo.

A search for a new Executive Director will begin immediately.

Cannizzo said, “New York’s breeding industry has flourished over the last decade, and I feel fortunate to have played a role in that success story. I’d like to thank the NYTB Board of Directors for their commitment to those working every single day on the 250 farms throughout New York. Thoroughbred racing is responsible for 19,000 jobs and more than $3 billion in annual economic impact to New York. The sport creates good jobs in every corner of the state and sustains hundreds of small businesses. NYRA is the engine of that economy and continues to set the standard for safety and integrity at its three historic tracks. I look forward to advocating on their behalf to help shape the future of Thoroughbred racing in New York.”

Saffron Beach Benched, BC Off Table

Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), a Group 3 winner in two starts, will skip an intended engagement in the Breeders’ Cup and will instead point to next year and the G1 English 1000 Guineas. Trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam, the chestnut won on debut at Newmarket in September and then saluted in the G3 Oh So Sharp S. there on Oct. 9.

“She’s going to have a rest now, before she comes back for the Nell Gwyn and the Guineas,” said trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam. “The main reason we’re not going is the owners wouldn’t be able to attend, and also she’d had two quick runs, so it’s best for her that she has a break with next year in mind. We’ll have the opportunity to travel with her next year.

“She’s just a natural. She was a late developer–but as soon as she got fit, the fitter she got the better she got. Looking at her pedigree, most have got better with age, so that’s what we’ve got to look forward to. That’s why I think the best thing to do is rug her up now, and look forward to next year.”

Joe Kelly Unsung Hero Award to Ahesahmahk Dahn

Ahesahmahk Dahn has been selected to receive the 2020 Joe Kelly Maryland Million Unsung Hero Award. Presented annually by the Board of Directors of the Maryland Million Ltd., this award honors the memory of Joe Kelly and celebrates important characteristics that are valuable but often unrewarded.

Dahn, a former Baltimore city elementary school teacher and service member in the U.S. Army, founded City Ranch Inc. in 2007 to introduce the children of Baltimore to horses by providing accessible and affordable horseback riding. Its creation inspired by his own love of horses and fueled by the loss of his nephew, the non-profit equestrian program and its herd of nearly 20 horses occupy a 29-acre farm in Windsor Mill, Md.

“Being chosen a recipient of this award really gives encouragement [to] what we’re doing at City Ranch, [showing] that we’re valued in the industry and that the industry thinks what we’re doing is significant,” said Dahn. “To be recognized for that, from your colleagues, says an awful lot about what they think of you.”

Dahn, along with his staff and volunteers, transport their horses to Baltimore city schools, nursing homes, residential treatment centers and any other facility that wants to host them, while also offering children the opportunity to volunteer on the farm to learn more.

“You [get to] see a child overcome his or her fears and become an excellent rider or excellent trainer, and you know you passed along to someone your interest in an animal and how to maintain that animal and care for it so that it can survive and strive and at the same time, you get the opportunity to interact with a non-human on a personal level,” said Dahn.
