Thoroughbred Owner Conference Rescheduled For 2021

OwnerView announced today that the seventh Thoroughbred Owner Conference has been rescheduled for 2021. The original conference was planned to be held in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in July, but as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, the event was rescheduled to be held at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., and was then planned as a virtual conference during Breeders' Cup week.

“Because of the uncertainties of travel and in-person gatherings, we still plan to provide a virtual event for the seventh Thoroughbred Owner Conference,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. “However, we are rethinking the format to provide engaging and educational content over a period of weeks or even months in 2021 instead of the originally planned two days.”

Details for the 2021 conference will be provided as soon as they are available.

“The impressive group of topics, speakers and panelists who were looking forward to participating during the 2020 conference will be our go-to group when we plan the next conference,” Falter said.

OwnerView is a joint effort spearheaded by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association to encourage ownership of Thoroughbreds and provide accurate information on aspects of ownership such as trainers, public racing syndicates, the process of purchasing and owning a Thoroughbred, racehorse retirement, and owner licensing.

The need for a central resource to encourage Thoroughbred ownership was identified in the comprehensive economic study of the sport that was commissioned by The Jockey Club and conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2011. The OwnerView site was launched in May 2012.

Four Stakes Wins Net Richard Eramia Jockey Of The Week Title

With more stakes wins than any other North American jockey, Richard Eramia was voted Jockey of the Week for Oct. 12 through Oct. 18. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing industry experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 active riders in the United States as well as retired and permanently disabled jockeys.

With mounts in eight of the ten stakes races on Oklahoma Classics Night for top Oklahoma-breds in divisional stakes competition, Eramia made four trips to the winner's circle. All four of his stakes wins were for different trainers.

He won three stakes in a row starting with Number One Dude for trainer Kari Craddock in the Oklahoma Classics Juvenile. Number One Dude set the pace early in the six-furlong sprint and prevailed by a length. For trainer Donnie Von Hemel. Eramia had the mount on She's All Wolfe who rallied from off the pace and hooked up with Lady Orchid over the final yards, with the two bobbing heads to the finish. Trainer Kenny Smith called on Eramia to ride Three Chords in the Oklahoma Classics Sprint and blew away the competition by 5-1/4 lengths going six furlongs. Eramia capped the evening by winning the Oklahoma Classics Starter Stakes under Rockport Kat for trainer Theresa Luneack.

A native of Uruguay, Eramia began his riding career there and also rode in Argentina and Brazil before coming to the U.S. in 2005. He earned his first graded stakes win in 2012 aboard Gantry in the Grade II Smile Sprint Handicap. In 2019, he won the Grade III Super Derby with Rotation for trainer Steve Asmussen and last month, he won the Grade III Oklahoma Derby with Shared Sense for trainer Brad Cox.

Eramia's weekly stats were 29-6-6-3 for a 21% win percentage and 52% in-the-money percentage and total purse earnings of $326,693.

Eramia out-polled fellow jockeys David Cabrera who won two stakes at Remington, Kyle Frey, the week's leading rider by wins, Manuel Franco who won two graded stakes at Keeneland and Rafael Manuel Hernandez who won the Grade I E.P. Taylor at Woodbine.

When Second of July springs from the starting gate in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, know that his trainer, Phil Gleaves, is someone to loudly root for. When it comes to selflessness, when it comes to putting fatherhood above all else, he is second to none.

Siskin Targeting Breeders’ Cup

Khalid Abdullah’s Siskin (First Defence) is aiming at a run in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland on Nov. 7, provided ground conditions suit.

“The Breeders’ Cup Mile is under serious consideration,” Juddmonte Racing Manager Teddy Grimthorpe told the TDN. “We’re concerned about two things: one is the amount of rain that’s fallen in Kentucky the last few days; we know he’s a horse that’s best on fast ground so that’s one concern. The other concern is if they continue to race on the turf track leading up to the Breeders’ Cup, if that will impact on the track adversely.

“Those are the main considerations but at the moment the horse is in good form and is aiming towards Keeneland.”

Siskin, the winner of the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and the G1 Phoenix S., is trained by Ger Lyons, who indicated on Nick Luck’s Daily podcast on Wednesday that the horse would be retired at the end of this campaign and stand at stud in Japan. Grimthorpe declined to comment on stud plans. Siskin’s breeding rights were sold in June to an undisclosed group of breeders, with Juddmonte retaining racing rights.

From the immediate family of sires Xaar (GB) and Bated Breath (GB), Siskin was unbeaten in four starts at two last year. After his Curragh Classic score in June Siskin was third in the G1 Sussex S. and fourth in the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp after missing the break in the latter.
