Equine Asthma Causes Thickening of Arterial Walls In Lungs
Researchers have found that horses with severe asthma also have arterial walls that are thickened in the lung. This condition can also be found in humans that have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; it contributes to pulmonary hypertension.
Severe asthma in horses is chronic lower airway disease; airway obstruction recurs when the horse is exposed to environmental triggers like hay mites and fungi. Drs. Serena Ceriotti, Michela Bullone, Mathilde Leclere, Francesco Ferrucci and Jean-Pierre Lavoie wanted to see if there were changes to the pulmonary arteries in asthmatic horses and how widely distributed these changes were. They also sought to see if the condition was reversible, either by inhaling corticosteroids or by avoiding allergens.
The study found that both actively asthmatic horses and those in remission had increased wall areas and that the pulmonary artery smooth muscle mass was increased. Both inhaled corticosteroids and allergen avoidance reversed the wall increase, but the smooth muscle only returned to normal during avoidance.
They concluded that equine asthma caused thickening of smooth muscle mass in pulmonary arteries. They also determined that the narrowing of the arteries could contribute to pulmonary hypertension. Avoiding triggers was found to be more effective than inhaled corticosteroids to control the disease.

Timonium’s 10-Day Meet Could Extend Beyond Maryland State Fair in ’21
The Timonium race meet that got scrapped because of the pandemic this summer could to be back in action in 2021. The Maryland Racing Commission approved a 10-date slate for next year at its Oct. 22 meeting, with a new wrinkle to the schedule.
“One thing that is a little different here, they’re also requesting, in addition to the seven days they normally would run during the state fair, [permission to operate Sept.] 10th, 11th and 12, which is a weekend after the fair is closed,” J. Michael Hopkins, the MRC’s executive director, said prior to the unanimous vote. “It is the first time they have done that that I can recall.”
Hopkins added that Timonium has had clearance to race
10 dates in the past in conjunction with the Maryland State Fair. But in recent seasons the applicant has only scheduled seven programs, all while the fair is operational at the same property.
Hopkins said it was his belief there would be no overlap with Laurel Park, whose meet traditionally follows the fair’s short season.
“They’re having the discussions with the Maryland Jockey Club [which owns Laurel] where scheduling is concerned,” Hopkins said. “[The two racetracks] preliminarily are in agreement with all of this. Secondarily, the purpose of this [vote] is to get the dates approved, and if there are any adjustments going forward we can come back and revisit them.”
A full calendar of 2021 Thoroughbred dates was unanimously approved for Laurel, Pimlico Race Course, and Timonium on Thursday. But the specific dates of all the individual meets were not read into the record, and it was unclear whether they had even been assigned. Via email, TDN subsequently requested the full calendar from Hopkins, but that query did not yield a reply prior to deadline for this story.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Double Your Triple Crown Pleasure
It's not every day you have a chance to watch not one, but two horses race for Triple Crown glory. But that's what we have this weekend as the one-eyed wonder, Mighty Heart, goes for Canada's Triple Crown in Saturday's Breeders' Stakes from Woodbine, and some eight hours later Contrail bids to become Japan's eighth Triple Crown winner in the Kikuka Sho from Kyoto Race Course.
The Canadian Triple Crown requires versatility, going from the synthetic Tapeta track at Woodbine, to dirt at Fort Erie, then returning to Woodbine for the mile and one-half Breeders' Stakes on the E.P. Taylor turf course. Mighty Heart, trained by Josie Carroll, won the first leg with a 13-1 wire-to-wire upset, then scored as the favorite from off the pace at Fort Erie.
Contrail tries to follow in the Triple Crown-winning footsteps of his sire, the Sunday Silence stallion Deep Impact. He won the Oka Sho at a mile in April, cruised in the 1 1/2-mile Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) at 1 1/2 miles this summer and now stretches out for the 1 7/8-mile Kikuka Sho, referred to as the Japanese St. Leger.
