Arqana October Concludes

DEAUVILLE, France—A numerically enhanced Arqana October Sale drew to a close in Deauville on Friday with encouraging figures in a year which cannot shake off the spectre of Covid-19. As 9pm curfews are about to be reinstated across the regions of France where the virus is spreading most quickly, the curtain has come down just in time on the major yearling sales of the season. What the situation will be come the breeding stock sales is anyone’s guess but, for now, Arqana has managed to stage its October Sale in its usual slot, with the number of yearlings and sessions increased to accommodate those horses which would originally have been earmarked for the Osarus September Sale in La Teste de Buch, which wasn’t able to be staged in situ this year.

The October Sale in Deauville has been conducted over four days in the recent past and, as a guide only rather than for a direct comparison, 414 yearlings were sold in last year’s edition for a total of €17,465,500 at an average of €40,959.

Twelve months on and the five days of trade brought turnover of €18,474,000 for 578 horses sold, at a consistently encouraging daily clearance rate about 80%, which levelled out to 82% for the week, with an average of €31,249 and median of €20,000. The final day boasted the strongest clearance of all at 84%, with an aggregate of €1,142,500 from 83 horses sold at an average of €13,765 and median of €12,000.

The top lot of the final session of the Arqana October Sale will be joining trainer Philippe Decouz who, with agent Laurent Benoit of Broadhurst agency, bought the Dark Angel (Ire) colt for €70,000 on behalf of footballer Antoine Griezmann, who already has 11 horses in training with Decouz.

Lot 685 was the final lot through the ring for Lady O’Reilly’s Haras de la Louivere, and is out of the winning Lawman (Fr) mare Larose (GB), a half-sister to the listed Prix Finlande winner Monroe Bay (GB) (Makfi {GB}).

Commenting on the week’s business in Deauville, Arqana’s President Eric Hoyeau and Executive Director Freddy Powell said in a joint statement, “We are immensely grateful towards our vendors, who have maintained their faith in Arqana and showed tremendous resilience throughout the season. It has been a long week and we are very much aware of the uneasy financial situation breeders and pinhookers are faced with due to the high production costs, but their adaptability has allowed the market to play its role and all these yearlings can now move on to the next stage of their career. We also wish to thank all buyers and underbidders, on the grounds on online, for their relentless competitiveness. It is specifically heartening to see a new generation of trainers step forward–there is no doubt that the measures recently announced by France Galop to bolster 2-year-old racing in France will have encouraged them even further. Finally, our heartfelt gratitude goes to all members of the Arqana team, who have been on deck every day with a positive attitude, as well as to our partners headed by caterer Henri Morel and his staff, who keep doing their best to serve our clients in spite of the logistical constraints.”

The Famous People in Gambling

Gambling is a recreational activity prevalent in society today. Young and old alike, people are getting hooked to what today’s society calls as the game of the lucky ones.

Generally, gambling refers to any form of activities that involves taking the risk of betting the money or any kind of tangible items of value, which sometimes depend on chance or the skill of somebody to manipulate the game.

Since its inception, the profitability that gambling can offer to an individual is endless. That is why gambling had continuously dominated the world of chances.

However, even if gambling like blackjack, poker, and slot machines are so popular these days, people still don’t have any idea how it started and who started it.

Here’s a list of the people who, in some way or another, contributed to the development of gambling.

1. The first ever slot machine, known as the Liberty Bell, was invented by Charles Fey in 1985. Fey was a car mechanic in San Francisco when he thought of inventing the Liberty Bell.

The first form of slot machine was made of three spinning wheels that had three featured shapes: spades, diamonds, and hearts plus a “cracked” Liberty Bell drawn at each reel.

It was on 1907 when an arcade-like machine maker based in Chicago had thought of reproducing machines similar to that of Fey’s. The manufacturer was named Henry Stephen Mills. The machine was called Operator Bell.

It was from this point that the slot machines have evolved until today’s form.

2. In card games such as blackjack, nobody can ever tell how the game started and who started it. This is because nobody tried to record it for the purpose of history.

However, there were people who conceptualized the basic strategy for playing blackjack.

It was in 1958 when Cantey, McDermott, Maisel and Baldwin had devised a strategy that caused such commotion with both the statisticians and the gamblers themselves.

These four people have created the basic strategy in playing the game all using their hand calculators. After which, they created a book known as “Winning Blackjack,” which is now considered as one of the most valuable strategies in playing blackjack.

In turn, this gave birth to what modern gambling now calls as the “card counting techniques.”

These are the people who have made the gambling world truly a phenomenon. Though, there are people who do not accept them as great inventors because of the negative effects of gambling in the society today. Nevertheless, they have contributed a lot in gambling.

Daredevil Returns From Turkey To Stand At Lane’s End In 2021

Leading second-crop sire Daredevil will relocate to Lane's End Farm for the 2021 breeding season.

The sire of 3-year-old sensations Swiss Skydiver and Shedaresthedevil, Daredevil is the #3 North American-based, second-crop sire behind only American Pharoah and Constitution with just over half as many starters.

Daredevil is the only first-crop sire to ever sire an individual winner of the Kentucky Oaks and the Preakness Stakes in the same year. Swiss Skydiver is only the sixth filly to win the second leg of the Triple Crown in its 145 years and only the second since Nellie Morse in 1924.

Shedaresthedevil was her sire's first classic winner in 2020 and led home the exacta for her sire in the most prestigious three-year-old fillies race of the year. These two Grade 1 winners from just 74 starters in 2020 represent 2.78 percent Grade 1 winners to starters, a staggering percentage at the elite level. This places Daredevil behind only Galileo worldwide at 3.6 percent and ahead of North American based super-sires War Front (1.5 percent), Speightstown (1.35 percent), More than Ready (1.27 percent), Tapit (.83 percent) and Into Mischief (.77 percent) in 2020.

Daredevil will stand at Lane's End as property of the Jockey Club of Turkey.

“We are extremely honored that the Jockey Club of Turkey is entrusting us with the continuation of Daredevils stallion career in America” said Bill Farish. “What he has accomplished is nothing short of remarkable. I would like to personally thank Murat Sancal for his ongoing efforts, the board members of the TJK, and especially the president Mr. Serdal Adali. This is the beginning of a very fruitful relationship with them and we are very grateful.”

Daredevil is in quarantine in preparation for his departure to Kentucky. He will arrive at Lane's End near the end of November and be available for inspection shortly after. Daredevil will stand for $25,000 in 2021.
