Preakness To Highlight All-Stakes Program At Pimlico On Oct. 3
Highlighted by the $1 million Preakness (G1), presented this year as the final jewel in a refashioned Triple Crown, the Maryland Jockey Club will serve up a total of 16 stakes, nine graded, worth $3.35 million in purses over Preakness weekend at Pimlico Race Course.
The 145th running of the 1 3/16-mile Preakness for 3-year-olds will anchor an all-stakes program of 12 races, seven graded, worth $2.7 million on Saturday, Oct. 3. It will be joined this year by the 96th renewal of the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan (G2), one of the country's premiere events for 3-year-old fillies, contested at 1 1/8 miles.
Turf runners 3 and up will travel 1 1/16 miles in the $250,000 Dinner Party (G2), previously run as the Dixie, now in its 119th year. Pimlico's oldest stakes race and the eighth-oldest in the country, it was named the Dinner Party for its 1870 debut and run at two miles.
Other grass stakes on the Preakness program are the $150,000 Gallorette (G3) for fillies and mares 3 and up, $150,000 Laurel Futurity for 2-year-olds and $150,000 Selima for 2-year-old fillies, each going 1 1/16 miles; and $100,000 James W. Murphy for 3-year-olds and $100,000 Hilltop for 3-year-old fillies at one mile.
Joining the Preakness Day lineup this year is the $200,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G3) at six furlongs for 3-year-olds and up. Other sprint stakes on the card are the $150,000 Miss Preakness (G3) for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs and $100,000 Skipat for fillies and mares 3 and up.
Rounding out the Oct. 3 stakes lineup is the $100,000 UAE President Cup (G1) for Arabians, contested at 1 1/16 miles for 4-year-olds and up.
The historic $250,000 Pimlico Special (G3) for 3-year-olds and up, returned to 1 3/16 miles after being contested at 1 ¼ miles in 2019, is the centerpiece of a Friday, Oct. 2 card that also serves as Claiming Crown Preview Day.
Each winner of the nine Claiming Crown Preview Day races will earn automatic entry and a stipend toward travel costs to the annual Claiming Crown Day program being held for the eighth consecutive year at Gulfstream Park. A similar preview was hosted at Laurel Park in 2015.
Preakness weekend will kick off Thursday, Oct. 1 with three stakes led by the $200,000 Chick Lang (G3) for 3-year-olds at six furlongs. It will be joined by a pair of five-furlong turf sprints, the $100,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint for 3-year-olds and up and $100,000 The Very One for fillies and mares 3 and older.
Live racing will be conducted at Pimlico this year from Sept. 24-26 and Oct. 1-3.
Nominations for all Thoroughbred stakes, excluding the Preakness, close Thursday, Sept. 17. Nominations for the UAE President Cup for Arabians close Saturday, Sept. 19.

Horse Owners Help Backside Workers Overcome the Digital Age

Across the nation, communities have grappled with how to ensure that all community members have access to the internet and computers in order to complete schooling and access vital resources. In Louisville, over 20% of families lacked access to internet, including many of the workers and their families who work at Churchill Downs and surrounding racetracks. Now, due to a generous donation to the Backside Learning Center from Wasabi Venture Stables Club members, many backside families will move closer towards digital equity.
The Backside Learning Center (BLC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to building community and enriching the lives of equine workers and their families at Churchill Downs and surrounding racetracks. When the pandemic hit in March, the Backside Learning Center acted quickly to provide emergency food relief and start a digital inclusion project for families who were suddenly faced with the challenges of virtual learning. BLC repurposed donated computers and provided them to 20 backside families and worked with JCPS to secure laptops and hotspots.
When Jeff Musgrove, a horseowner and member of Wasabi Ventures Stables learned of the work of the Backside Learning Center from the TDN‘s story on April 25, he immediately felt a call to action.
“When I saw what the BLC was doing, I knew that I had a unique opportunity to make an impact in the lives of the families that play such a critical role in our sport,” he said.
Wasabi Ventures Stables reached out to its members to raise funds to strengthen the BLC’s work on digital inclusion with backside families. Michele Pesula Kuegler, Director of Aftercare & Community explained, “Our club has a sense of generosity and caringt hat is unrivaled. With the opportunity to fundraise for the Backside Learning Center and support the community who cares for our horses, our members recognized the value in the BLC programming and gladly donated.”
Funds will provide internet access, computers and digital skills training to backside families and will also strengthen technology for the BLC’s learning hub for students.
“The partnership with Wasabi Ventures Stables symbolizes the strength and interconnectedness of the horse racing community,” added Sherry Stanley, Executive Director of the Backside Learning Center. “We are so grateful for these resources that will enable Backside families to thrive in this new digital world.”
This initiative builds on the BLC’s efforts to connect horse owners more closely with the backside community. In June, the BLC launched Purses for a Purpose, a program where owners can pledge a portion of their horse’s winnings to support programs for backside workers and their families.

Therideofalifetime, Pico D’Oro Chasing Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Berth In Saturday’s Iroquois
The Road to the 2021 Kentucky Derby will begin Saturday afternoon when 10 2-year-olds go to the post for the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs.
The Iroquois offers 17 points toward the 2021 Run for the Roses on a 10-4-2-1 scale to the top four finishers, as well as an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland in early November.
Topping the entries is Stephen Fidel's Therideofalifetime, runner-up in the Saratoga Special (GII) in his most recent start. Trained by Ignacio Correas IV, Therideofalifetime will be ridden by Florent Geroux and break from post position 10.
Also figuring to draw support is Sandin Syndicate Stable's Pico d'Oro.
Trained by Bill Morey, Pico d'Oro won the Ellis Park Juvenile last month in his most recent start that served as his maiden-breaking score. Javier Castellano has the mount and will break from post position seven.
The field for the Iroquois, with riders and weights from the rail out, is: Drop Anchor (Brian Hernandez Jr., 118 pounds), Sittin On Go (Corey Lanerie, 118), Super Stock (Ricardo Santana Jr., 120), Ultimate Badger (Joe Talamo, 118), Dreamer's Disease (Miguel Mena, 118), Belafonte (Declan Cannon, 118), Pico d'Oro (Castellano, 120), Midnight Bourbon (Gerardo Corrales, 118), Crazy Shot (Edgar Morales, 118) and Therideofalifetime (Geroux, 118).
The Iroquois will go as Race 10 with a post of 4:07 p.m.
