Casse: Enforceable ‘Has Grown Up A Lot,’ But Will Need ‘Plenty Of Pace’ In Kentucky Derby

Grade 3 winner Enforceable will enter the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby off a two-month layoff, trainer Mark Casse told The Canadian Press this week. Most recently fourth in the G2 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on July 11, the 3-year-old son of Tapit is still ranked 12th on the Derby points leaderboard (43).

Enforceable is therefore expected to earn a spot in the starting gate for the classic, delayed by COVID-19 to Sept. 5.

The royally-bred Enforceable is a full brother to multiple graded stakes-winner Mohaymen and half-brother to Grade 1 winner New Year's Day, and races for owner John Oxley. A late-closing type, the colt's other starts in 2020 include a win in the G3 Lecomte (Jan. 18), a second in the G2 Risen Star (Feb. 15), and a fifth in the G2 Louisiana Derby (Mar. 21).

“He has grown up a lot,” Casse told The Canadian Press. “It's a tough Derby, he is going to need things to go his way. He needs there to be plenty of pace . . . that makes him much more effective.”

Bred in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms, Enforceable's total earnings stand at $397,150 with a record of 2-2-2 from 10 starts. He was a $775,000 RNA at the Keeneland September yearling sale.

His most recent workout was a five-furlong move at Churchill in 1:02.60 on Aug. 1. Enforceable, under jockey Declan Carroll, started about two lengths behind his stablemate and worked through fractions of :12.80, :25.60 and :38.40. Enforceable finished about a half-length to the good at the wire but continued in front through a six-furlong gallop out of 1:15.80 and finished his work with a seven-furlong time of 1:29.60.

“I was very happy with how he worked this morning,” said 21-year-old Carroll, whose father, David, oversees Casse's Churchill Downs string. “He did everything in stride. I was just the pilot.”

Casse was not in town for the work but reported via text following watching a short video of his stretch run, “I really like what I'm seeing.”

Details Emerge On Maryland Study Tracking EIPH In Lasix-Free 2-Year-Old Runners

A survey study of all 2-year-olds that race in Maryland this year to determine the extent of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage is set to begin Friday, Aug. 7, at Laurel Park.

The Maryland Equine Safety, Health and Welfare Advisory Committee, which falls under the Maryland Racing Commission, on July 31 approved the plan for post-race video endoscopies of all starters in all 2-year-old races. The first 2-year-old races of the year in the state have been carded as extras for the Friday, Aug. 7 program.

Under an emergency regulation approved Aug. 2, all 2-year-old races through Dec. 31 will be run Lasix-free with a 48-hour cut-off of the therapeutic medication. The survey study is part of a broader agreement between the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and The Stronach Group for the Lasix-free pilot program that runs through 2023 for 2-year-old races and graded stakes only. Graded stakes in 2020 are not part of the pilot program.

Private veterinarians who practice at Laurel will conduct the video endoscopies and complete information forms for each horse that will include the horse's name, its EIPH score, any related comments, and whether the horse trains on Lasix. Additional useful data from each race and race day will be added to the information forms, which will be transferred to an online database.

The MRC will maintain all records from the survey study, and only a horse's owner and trainer will be given the results of a scope to maintain anonymity. Horses will be scored using a range from 0 to 3—none, mild, moderate or severe bleeding—for the purpose of simplification.

Dr. John Sivick, a Laurel-based veterinarian who is a member of the Equine Safety, Health and Welfare Advisory Committee, said endoscopies are usually performed 30 minutes to 90 minutes after a race, but the goal will be a window of 40 minutes to 70 minutes post-race to keep the scores as consistent as possible.

All horsemen who enter 2-year-olds in Maryland for the rest of this year can expect the horses to be scoped. The Maryland Jockey Club Racing office will notify horsemen when entries are made and also the morning of the race. Grooms must wait with a horse until it is scoped.

Owners and trainers do not have to pay for the video endoscopies however, they will be entitled to the results.

Aloha Star To Be Offered By Tattersalls Online

Last month’s G2 Airlie Stud S. winner Aloha Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) will be offered as part of the inaugural Tattersalls Online August Sale. Bidding will open on Aug. 12 at midday and close at midday on Aug. 14.

Aloha Star will be offered from trainer Fozzy Stack’s stable, as will Meaningful Vote (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), a 89-rated 3-year-old colt who won a premier handicap at Naas two starts ago.

Also among the initial entries is the 7-year-old mare Akhania (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}) in foal to Golden Horn (GB) and with a Night Of Thunder (Ire) colt foal at foot. The Night Of Thunder colt is bred on the same cross as this year’s G2 Dante S. winner Thunderous (Ire).

Mirror Kisses (GB) (Requinto {Ire}), Inner Beauty (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) and Measure Of Magic (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) are all winning 2-year-olds on offer. Junkanoo (GB) (Epaulette {Aus}) was a winner at last week’s Goodwood festival while 4-year-old Themaxwecan (Ire) (Maxios {GB}) has won four times and is rated 101.

Racing Welfare’s Newmarket Heath Ride Returns

The Newmarket Heath Ride is scheduled for Sept. 6, Racing Welfare announced on Tuesday. The charity fundraiser will be the first in-person event since the coronavirus pandemic began. Entries will open on Aug. 10, with a 150-rider limit and close on Aug. 31. The sponsored ride starts and finishes at Newmarket’s July Course and offers participants rides over eight, 15 or 20-mile routes. Made possible by the kind permission of The National Stud, Newmarket Racecourses, and Jockey Club Estates, the event offers a unique opportunity to ride over Newmarket’s training grounds, utilising the town’s network of horse-walks. In the case of the longer routes, they emerge at the base of Warren Hill. The 20-mile course also offers the Al Bahathri all-weather gallop along the way. Entries are £20 and riders are required to raise a minimum of £20 sponsorship in addition to the entry fee.
