GreenMount Farm’s Bernardini Filly Named 2020 Champion At Maryland Yearling Show

GreenMount Farm's filly by Bernardini out of Mystic Love, by Not For Love, outshined the competition as judge Michael Matz selected her as grand champion of the 86th annual Maryland Horse Breeders Association's Yearling Show, held Sunday, July 19 at the Timonium Fairgrounds horse show ring in Timonium, Md.

Bred by GreenMount Farm in partnership with Godolphin, the champion filly was the winner of Class IV (for fillies foaled in Maryland, by out-of-state sires). She was shown by Sabrina Moore, manager and co-owner of GreenMount.

“I had a good feeling about her, I mean I think she's really nice, but until you get there and see how nice all the other horses are [you don't know],” said Moore. “It's surreal, but I count my blessings, I know it doesn't happen all the time. Knowing the people that are genuinely happy for you, that's probably the best part of it.

“I love the show because they get out and you kind of get a feel for them, what they're going to be like as soon as you get them off the farm and they [get to] school a little bit. I just think the yearling show is really key for them and I was glad to get her there.”

A total of 67 yearlings in four classes were judged by two-time classic-winning trainer and hall of fame show jumping rider Matz, who lives in Pennsylvania and trains out of Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md.

“I thought the last [class], that the [champion] filly won, was the strongest group,” Matz said. “She was a nice mover. She just had an overall look. I thought she was well-made and pretty well balanced.”

The reserve championship went to R. Larry Johnson's homebred Whenigettoheaven, a colt by Street Magician out of Heaven Knows What, by Holy Bull, who won Class I (for colts and geldings foaled in Maryland, by Maryland sires). He was one of two ribbon winners for Johnson, as his Street Magician filly won Class III (for fillies foaled in Maryland, by Maryland sires).

Street Magician was awarded the Northview Stallion Station Challenge Trophy as the leading sire of the show. Bred and campaigned by Johnson, the graded stakes winner stands as part of Legacy Farm Stallions at Roland Farm in Warwick, Md.

All yearlings who entered the show ring are now eligible for the $40,000 premium award which is split annually, with $20,000 going to the exhibitors of the four show contestants who earn the most money as 2-year-olds during 2021, and another $20,000 divided among the exhibitors of the four highest-earning 3-year-old runners the next year.

Gluck Equine Research Foundation Launches Equine Biological Passport Program

The Gluck Equine Research Foundation at the University of Kentucky is developing an Equine Biological Passport (EBP) which aims to identify specific biomarkers that will detect drug use by monitoring changes to peptides and protein abundance, and monitor those biomarkers over time. The goals of this program are to elevate equine research at the University of Kentucky, to serve as a platform to impact policy change and drug testing protocol, and further understand the impact of drugs and medications on Thoroughbred racehorses.

“In the last few years we have seen too many negative headlines around equine drug use. As a research scientist, with 30 years of regulatory drug testing experience, my team and I know this is a problem we cannot currently solve,” said Dr. Scott Stanley, Professor of Equine Pharmacology and Toxicology; Director of the Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory. “We know that it takes time to develop new tests for each new emerging drug, so we will always be behind. We know that each horse metabolizes drugs at a different rate, making standard clearance and withdrawal times confusing. In addition, we know that there are environmental factors, human interactions, and hundreds of other variables that can impact our current drug testing procedures. The EBP program is a tool that will enable us to rapidly identify new drugs and measure the physiological effect on the equine athlete. These data will be critical in differentiating between intentional doping and accidental contaminants, which can smear the industry image and damage reputations.”

The Equine Biological Passport program is an evolving research program, which is designed to expand and to be flexible enough to address new challenges, such as bio-therapeutics. Over the next several years, Gluck will continue to validate and refine the EBP program to position it as a future tool for the industry. In addition, it will provide scientific data needed to support changes in rules and regulations that will allow prosecution of violators, and prevent “at risk” horses from entering in competitions.

competition and out-of-competition testing, for every stakeholder.”

Ny Traffic’s Haskell Second Leads To Jump In NTRA Top 3-Year-Old Poll

Authentic's victory in the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes allowed him to hold his ground on the latest National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) Top Three-Year-Old Poll, but it was race runner-up Ny Traffic who gained heightened regard among voters.

In earning his first career top-level triumph on July 18, Authentic kept himself among the leading Kentucky Derby contenders and remained in the third position on the poll with 280 points. The son of Into Mischief improved his record to four wins from five career starts as he trails only Belmont Stakes winner Tiz the Law (38 first-place votes, 389 points) and Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby victor Honor A. P. (1 first-place vote, 345 points) in the rankings.

Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes winner Art Collector (248 points) and Los Alamitos Derby victor Uncle Chuck (135) sit fourth and fifth, respectively, on the poll with the only newcomer to the top 10 being the aforementioned Ny Traffic, who jumps from 18th up to sixth with 124 points. Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., Ny Traffic rallied late and was beaten just a nose by Authentic in the Haskell, his third consecutive runner-up outing. Ny Traffic had previously finished second in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes and Grade 2 Louisiana Derby and was also third in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes.

King Guillermo, winner of the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby, ranks seventh with 113 points followed by Dr Post (103 points), the third-place finisher in the Haskell. Leading sophomore fillies Gamine (101 points) and Swiss Skydiver (96) complete the top 10.

There was little change in this week's NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll with champion distaffer Midnight Bisou racking up 23 first-place votes and 359 points to maintain the No. 1 spot for another week. Stephen Foster Stakes winner Tom's d'Etat (7 first-place votes, 323 points) is second with multiple Grade 1-winner Vekoma (2 first-place votes, 293 points) holding in third.

Zulu Alpha (156 points) moves up to fourth just ahead of Monomoy Girl, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2018, in fifth with 1 first-place vote and 146 points. By My Standards (135 points) and Mucho Gusto (131) rank sixth and seventh followed by Tiz the Law (2 first-place votes, 112 points), who continues his run as the lone sophomore in the Top Thoroughbred Poll.

Code of Honor (1 first-place vote, 90 points) and Maximum Security (3 first-place votes, 88 points) round out the top 10.

The NTRA Top Thoroughbred polls are the sport's most comprehensive surveys of experts. Every week eligible journalists and broadcasters cast votes for their top 10 horses, with points awarded on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. All horses that have raced in the U.S., are in training in the U.S., or are known to be pointing to a major event in the U.S. are eligible for the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll. Voting in both the Top Three-Year-Old Poll and the Top Thoroughbred Poll is scheduled to be conducted through the conclusion of the Breeders' Cup in November.

Lesson Horses: Chad Schumer On Worldly

You never forget the name of your first lesson horse – that horse who taught you what you need to know to work with every one that follows.

In this series, participants throughout the Thoroughbred industry share the names and stories of the horses that have taught them the most about life, revealing the limitless ways that horses can impact the people around them. Some came early on in their careers and helped them set a course for the rest of their lives, while others brought valuable lessons to veterans of the business.

Question: Which horse has taught you the most about life?

Chad Schumer

Chad Schumer of Schumer Bloodstock: Worldly. He taught me about treacherous agents, the actual joy of having a horse in training because he took me to the Breeders' Cup, and how sometimes things happen for a reason, and you don't realize it at the time. More than any other horse, he taught me that.

At the time we bought him, it looked like it was a terrible disaster, and then just a few months later, he took me to the Breeders' Cup. It was an incredible story. I bought this horse for clients, and one agent lied to the people and talked them out of it, so I got stuck with him and it was very scary.

The funny thing was, in January of that year, we went to Santa Anita, and it was Beholder's first start of the year. We were sitting there at Santa Anita and we were kind of fuming. We weren't going to get to go to the Breeders' Cup this year because the timing was so close [with the November sales in Kentucky], and it's hard to come back and still be able to work the sale.

We were sitting having lunch at Santa Anita having this conversation about how bummed we were that we weren't going to go to the Breeders' Cup, and just a few months later, we actually have a horse in the Breeders' Cup and we are there. It was an incredible situation.

Worldly showed flashes of his talent early on, with a third in the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, then he spent some time on the Louisiana branch of the Kentucky Derby trail. He came back in the summer of his 3-year- old season to finish second in the G3 Northern Dancer Stakes and Ohio Derby. He won the listed Prairie Meadows Handicap at four.

Schumer came into possession of the horse in the summer of 2013, and sent him to trainer Brendan Walsh. Worldly finished second in a pair of listed stakes at Prairie Meadows and Remington Park, then he ran third in the Homecoming Classic Stakes at Churchill Downs en route to a start in the Breeders' Cup Marathon at Santa Anita, where he finished third to London Bridge.

Worldly was then sold to race in Saudi Arabia, where he became a stakes winner and successful stallion. His son Alzahzaah is a three-time Group 1 winner in Saudi Arabia, including the vaunted Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup.
