Stronach 5 Pays $4,165.20 Despite Wins By Two Heavy Favorites

Despite victories by two heavy favorites in Liza Star and Plot the Dots, Friday's Stronach 5 still rewarded bettors with winning tickets with a $4,165.20 payoff.

The national wager, with races from Laurel Park and Gulfstream Park, had a guaranteed pool of $100,000.

Friday's Stronach 5 began with Laurel Park's sixth race and an impressive victory by the 10-1 maiden Fiya, owned by The Orebanks, trained by Michael Merryman, and ridden by Feargal Lynch. The second leg of the sequence, run as Gulfstream's eighth race, was won by favored Liza Star while the third leg, run as Laurel's seventh race, was also won by the favorite, 4-5 shot Plot the Dots.

The 6-1 shot Rags for Britches won Gulfstream's ninth race, the fourth leg of Stronach 5, while the sequence wrapped up with the 7-1 shot Princess Killmain winning Laurel's eighth race.

The Stronach 5 In the Money podcast, hosted by Jonathan Kinchen and Peter Thomas Fornatale, is posted by 2 p.m. every Thursday at InTheMoneyPodcast.com and is available on iTunes and other major podcast distributors.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Nominations Announced For $1-Million Haskell; Race To Include Derby Points, Breeders’ Cup Berth, Potential Bonus

Thirty-three horses were nominated to the Grade 1, $1-million TVG.com Haskell Stakes, with Monmouth Park's signature race on July 18 offering the added inducements of points for the Kentucky Derby and “Win and You're In” status for the Breeders' Cup Classic, racing secretary/handicapper John Heims and stakes coordinator Lynn T. Ott announced on Friday.

The Oceanport, N.J., track is also putting up a $1-million bonus for any horse that sweeps the Haskell, the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders' Cup Classic this year.

The nine-furlong Haskell, to be contested for the 53rd time, headlines a stakes-filled program that includes the Grade 1 United Nations. It is one of just two Grade 1 races left for 3-year-olds prior to the Kentucky Derby, which has moved to Sept. 5 from its traditional spot the first Saturday in May because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Breeders' Cup Classic is set for Nov. 7.

A total of 170 points will be available for a chance to make the starting gate in the Kentucky Derby, with 100 going to the Haskell winner, 40 to the runner-up, 20 to the third-place finisher and 10 to the fourth-place horses.

Santa Anita Derby runner-up Authentic is one of three runners nominated from trainer Bob Baffert's barn. Cezanne and Uncle Chuck are the others.

Baffert has won the Haskell Invitational a record eight times, doing so in 2015 (American Pharoah), 2014 (Bayern), 2012 (Paynter), 2011 (Coil), 2010 (Lookin at Lucky), 2005 (Roman Ruler), 2002 (War Emblem) and 2001 (Point Given).

Opening Day for the 2020 Monmouth Park meet is set for Friday, July 3, with a 5 p.m. first post. Saturday and Sunday post times will be 12:50, with the exception of a noon start on Haskell Day.

Wicked Strong Colt Leads Third Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Under Tack Session

The third and final session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale's under tack show was highlighted on Friday by a Wicked Strong colt who covered a quarter-mile in :21 1/5 seconds.

The chestnut colt, offered as Hip 512, is the second foal out of the winning E Dubai mare E Classic, whose first foal is the stakes-placed E Rated. Champion sprinter Housebuster is in the colt's extended family, along with Grade 2 winners Something Extra and Nicole H. Wavertree Stables consigns the colt, as agent.

Five horses tied for the co-fastest time at an eighth of a mile on Friday, each breezing in :10 flat:

  • Hip 389, a Twirling Candy filly out of the placed More Than Ready mare Apple Cider, whose two foals to race are both winners. Grade 2 winners Hangover Kid and Who Did It And Run are in the family of this Maryland-bred, who is offered as property of Grassroots Training and Sales.
  • Hip 400, a Maclean's Music filly out of the placed Afternoon Deelites mare Ava G, whose four foals to race are all winners, including stakes winner Miss My Rose. Grade 2 winner Minstrel Miss is the fourth dam of this filly, who is consigned by Scanlon Training and Sales, agent.
  • Hip 505, a Pennsylvania-bred Fed Biz filly out of the unraced Awesome Again mare Dream Realized, who is the dam of four winners from six runners. Crane Thoroughbred Services consigns the filly, as agent.
  • Hip 518, a first-crop Frosted filly out of the stakes-placed Bluegrass Cat mare Enchante, whose first foal to race is a winner. SBM Training and Sales, agent, handles the filly, whose page includes champion Forty Niner.
  • Hip 552, a Dialed In filly out of the winning Menifee mare Fall Fantasy, who is the dam of eight runners and six winners. The filly is a full-sister to Chalon, a stakes winner and runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Her page also features Grade 1 winner Patches and Grade 2 winners Headache, La Spia, and Red Attack. She is also consigned by SBM Training and Sales, agent.

The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale takes place June 29-30, beginning each day at 11 a.m. Eastern.

55 Nominated To July 8 Indiana Derby; Kentucky Derby Points On The Line

The Grade 3, $300,000-guaranteed Indiana Derby is setting up to be very promising for Wednesday, July 8. A total of 55 nominations have been collected for the richest horse race in the state of Indiana, the second highest total in the 26-year history of the event. The Derby will be run at a distance of one and one-eighth miles for the first time in 2020.

The Indiana Derby is part of the Kentucky Derby Championship Series for 2020. The first four finishers will receive qualifying points (20-8-4-2) toward the Kentucky Derby, set for Saturday, Sept. 5.

The Indiana Derby list includes several that have their eye on the first Saturday in September, including 13 graded stakes placed 3-year-olds. Pneumatic comes into the race off a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 $1 million Belmont Stakes. A son of Uncle Mo, Pneumatic was third in his previous outing in the Grade 3 $150,000 Matt Winn Stakes prior to his trip to the Belmont. Trained by Steve Asmussen, Pneumatic is owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds.

Joining Pneumatic on the nomination list is Ny Traffic. The grey son of Cross Traffic finished second in his last start in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs and was a second-place finisher the start before in the Grade 2, $1 Million Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds.

The colt with the biggest bankroll on the Indiana Derby Nomination List is Basin from the Asmussen stable. The son of Liam's Map has not started since finishing second in a division of the Grade 1 $500,000 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park in early May. Owned by Jackpot Farm, Basin has accumulated in excess of $471,000 in career earnings and has only missed the board once in six career starts.

Hall of Fame and Triple Crown-winning Trainer Bob Baffert has nominated three to the Indiana Derby, including Thousand Words, owned by the Albaugh Family Stables and Spendthrift Farm. The Pioneerof the Nile colt was a winner earlier this year in the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita. He is three for five in his career and a start in the Indiana Derby would be his first since running in the Oaklawn Stakes in Arkansas in early April.

Indiana Derby Day will feature purses in excess of $800,000 and will include the 25th running of the Grade 3, $200,000-guaranteed Indiana Oaks. The race is Indiana's first graded stakes event and has attracted 35 nominations. Asmussen has nominated multiple graded stakes-placed Comical, who finished second in her last start at Oaklawn Park in the Gardenia Stakes. The Into Mischief filly was a second-place finisher last year in the Grade 1, $300,000 Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Another top filly on the Indiana Oaks list is Bonny South, winner in her last start in the Grade 2, $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks. Hailing from the Brad Cox barn, the Munnings filly is two for two in 2020.

The Grade 3 Indiana Derby and Grade 3 Indiana Oaks will be joined by the $75,000 Jonathan B Schuster Memorial Stakes (Listed), named in honor of the former Indiana Grand vice president and general manager of racing who passed away last winter. Other stakes on the card include the $75,000 Indiana General Assembly Stakes (Listed) as well as the $75,000 Hoosier Breeders Sophomore Stakes for both colts and fillies.

First post for Indiana Derby Day is set for 2:20 p.m. Eastern. The Indiana Derby has an anticipated post of approximately 7:45 p.m. and will be the final leg of the All-Stakes Pick 4 as well as the Pick 5 on the afternoon card.

Live racing continues through Wednesday, Nov. 18 with action held Monday through Thursday beginning at 2:20 p.m. Four Saturday programs are slated for all-Quarter Horse days set for July 4, Aug. 8, Oct. 23 and Oct. 24.
