The filly is now registered on the British Horseracing Authority's website as being owned by Mr Yuesheng Zhang of Yulong Investments. The same owner also bought multiple Group 1 winner Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) for 5.4 million gns at the previous year's December Mares Sale. 

Relief Rally is rated 107 after a season in which she was defeated only once in her five starts, and then only by a nose when second in the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot. Racing last year for the partnership of Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, she won her first two races in April and May, and following Royal Ascot she headed to Newbury for victory in the Weatherbys Super Sprint. Relief Rally's final win of the year in the Lowther at York's Ebor meeting was the third success in that race for Haggas, who also won the G2 Gimcrack S. a day later with Tony Bloom and Ian McAleavy's Lake Forest (GB) (No Nay Never).

“I am delighted at how well she's done over the winter. There isn't a great deal of her but she has definitely strengthened a lot,” Haggas told TDN on Tuesday. “I suspect she will stay sprinting. She has a very good turn of foot.”

While Relief Rally's programme for this year is yet to de decided, the trainer noted that the Commonwealth Cup at the royal meeting is “the obvious race”.  In its nine runnings to date, the Group 1 sprint for three-year-olds has twice been won by a filly – Quiet Reflection (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) in 2016 and Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in 2021. 

Haggas added, “She started cantering today. Let's hope she can win a Group 1 race this year as she's already a Group 2 winner.”

He also issued an update on Lake Forest, who is another to have resumed cantering this week. Haggas said, “He needs quick ground so he won't be out too early. But we'll be aiming him for the Commonwealth Cup, I suspect, because he's in the same position as her in that he's a Group 2 winner so there's not much point in going backwards. He might start in the Sandy Lane at the end of May.”

Bred by Churchtown House Stud, she sold for €40,000 as a Goffs November foal and was originally raced by Jeff Smith of Littleton Stud and trainer Andrew Balding. Successful in the G1 Cheveley Park S. as a juvenile, both the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Sussex S. went her way in 2021.

Kept in training at four, she added the G1 July Cup S. to her resume before bringing 5.4 million gns to top the 2022 Tattersalls December Mares Sale when picked up by Yuesheng Zhang's Yulong. After an Australian campaign with Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, she has returned to Europe for broodmare duty. Her record stands at 20-6-1-3 and $2,546,735 in earnings.

“It is a very nerve-wracking experience selling a horse around that level,” her original buyer and part owner Justin Warwick said. “I'm relieved that the process has been a success and I'm very happy to see where she is going and the opportunity she will have.”

Bred by Mt Hallowell Stud, the chestnut was an A$35,000 buy back before being sold to Warwick for A$50,000 out of the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale in 2021. Put into training with trainer Luke Fernie, the filly would take her debut on New Year's Day in 2022. Transferred to Peter and Paul Snowden for all barring her last start, a listed race win followed two starts later and she ran third in the G3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic. Successful in the G2 Sires Produce S. that May, the filly added the G1 J.J. Atkins that June. As a 3-year-old the filly would also add the G2 Hot Danish S. and run third in the G1 Coolmore Classic, and was retired in the care of Annabel Neasham in September with a mark of 14-5-1-2 and $1,279,661 in earnings at four.

“She has taken all of us on such a wonderful ride,” Warwick added. “When you buy a horse you dream of what might be to come.

“This girl delivered on that dream. She gave us so much joy on the racetrack and we are excited about her prospects for the next stage of her journey.

“One chapter of the book has now finished but the best thing is, she will get looked after so well and be given a chance with the best stallions in the world. Breeding is not what us part owners do, but we can now sit back and hope that her offspring go well and we can say we played a part in that.”

Out of the winning mare Saxabelle, Sheeza Belter is also related to group winners Special Reward (Aus) (Demerit {Aus}) and Showy Chloe (Aus) (Alfred Nobel {Ire}).

The virtual auction was the first of its kind for Magic Millions, and the sales company's managing director Barry Bowditch said, “I believe moving forward this is the most genuine and transparent way to sell horses outside of a large auction.

“We are delighted with the way today's auction played out and we look forward, when the right opportunity arises, to doing more of these in the future.

Vin Cox will depart Godolphin Australia on Dec. 1 in one of the most significant senior shuffles in Australian bloodstock. He will relocate to Yulong Investments in Victoria in a new role as general manager.

After five and some years as managing director of Godolphin Australia, Vin Cox will step away from the role on December 1 to join Yulong Investments as general manager. It's big news in bloodstock, Cox helming Godolphin's Australian outlet since January 2018.

He will migrate to Yulong with a wealth of experience behind him, having overseen one of the largest breeding and racing operations in this part of the world. The move will suit him as Yulong, the Victorian-based business of Mr. Yuesheng Zhang, emerges as a bloodstock super-power in Australia.

Speaking to The Thoroughbred Report, Cox said his tenure at Godolphin was a privileged one, and he was quick to deflect to the 300-odd staff that he had the great pleasure to work with the last five years.

“I'm very proud of what the team has achieved at Godolphin,” he said. “And it's a big team. I was just one part of it the last few years, but my time in the role is full of very lovely memories, both on and off the racetrack, and I will greatly miss so many parts of my everyday working life.”

The Godolphin team is extensive, dotted around farms and racing yards in two states. Cox is a genuine person and he will genuinely miss many of the relationships he's built at the operation, from the people he managed directly to the “unsung heroes in the background who I formed a really good relationship with, and whom I enjoyed working with immensely”.

“They are truly wonderful people in that organisation,” he said. “The staff is just short of 300 people and every one of them wears a blue shirt proudly. I'm going to miss them and miss representing them.”

High Achiever

Cox was announced as the managing director of Godolphin in October 2017. At that time, he held the same position at Magic Millions and had been in that company since 2011. As such, he's been a high achiever with some of the elite brands in Australian bloodstock.

During his years at Magic Millions, he oversaw the emergence of the A$10-million January raceday, and he negotiated the valuable grant from the Queensland government that backed horseracing tourism in the state. Long after his departure, he enjoyed continued affection for Magic Millions and he lives on the Gold Coast to this day.

Cox's tenure at Godolphin also coincided with some of the company's best years, and they've been interesting years. He has travelled widely, gone to the Dubai World Cup on numerous occasions, and he's met interesting people in far-flung locations. The operation has 700 horses across three training locations and three stud farms, and, for anyone else, it might have been a mind-bending scale in which to work.

But it never intimidated Cox who seemed to relish in the vastness of his role, and he's quite particular about what has given him the most satisfaction these last five years.

“The thing I got a real kick out of was enjoying looking at staff celebrate and revel in success we've had along the way,” he said. “For different reasons, different people got a real kick out of what we were achieving on the racetrack, in the breeding barns or in the foaling paddocks.

“There were so many parts to it all. I really enjoyed seeing people satisfied with how they were fulfilling their roles, in whatever that role looked like.”

It was a prolonged and consistent head-hunting approach over many months required by Yuesheng Zhang to encourage Cox to move and he will head to his new role at Yulong in early December after finishing up at Godolphin at the same time. He's looking forward to it, and he isn't intimidated by the vastness of the Yulong operation either, which has quickly climbed the rigging to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, bloodstock operations in the Southern Hemisphere.

Cox will remain living on the Gold Coast, but will travel extensively up and down to Victoria, and to anywhere else that is required as Yulong's general manager.

“I won't be permanently relocating to Victoria, but I'll certainly be spending a lot of time there,” he said. “I'll be moving about in a similar fashion as I have done with Godolphin between the Gold Coast and the farm in Victoria.”

Cox said his family is very supportive of his new direction. Wife Nicole is used to an upwardly mobile husband and their three sons, Harry, Charlie and Will, all of whom have been involved with horses, are grown up and on their own paths.

“The family is excited for me,” Cox said. “They are thrilled that it's a great opportunity and they're looking forward to that side of it. They too have enjoyed the ride at Godolphin and what the Godolphin association brings, and they also recognise the challenges that lie ahead.”

The Passion Is Very Apparent

Cox's appointment to Yulong is a huge announcement in Australian bloodstock circles, but it mirrors where the company is at right now.

Yuesheng Zhang is a Chinese billionaire that has made the paddocks of Yulong his second home, and the bloodstock he has purchased is now an eye-watering collection. Across the whole of the operation, there are around 700 mares in Australia and a further 100, give or take, in Ireland. He also has a number in Japan.

Zhang is clearly excited about the appointment, saying, “Vin's impeccable track record and vast experience in bloodstock make him an invaluable addition to lead Yulong. We are excited about the new chapter this heralds for our operations. Together, we aim to solidify our position as a leading player in the global industry.”

This year alone, Yulong made the single-deepest splash of any previous vendor at the Magic Millions National Sale when it threw A$33.5 million at 60 broodmares across three days. The effort made the pages of the Australian Financial Review.

Outside the perimeters of physical sales, Yulong has marched through almost every digital catalogue, plucking out the best broodmares to visit the likes of Written Tycoon (Aus), Tagaloa (Aus), Grunt (NZ), Alabama Express (Aus) and Lucky Vega (Ire). For this breeding season, the farm added Pierata (Aus), cherry-picked from Aquis, and Japanese import Diatonic (Jpn).

Into this fold Cox will head in early December and, while Yulong is similar to Godolphin in measure of scale, it's a very different everyday operation.

“What Yulong has done in a short space of time is extraordinary,” Cox said. “Mr. Zhang is a very prominent investor in the industry now, and that's happened very quickly at a very significant level. I'm excited to be getting in on that journey because he's making a long-term presence in Australia.

“He's very passionate and his two daughters are very passionate, and he's got great support around him. That passion he has is very apparent when you talk to him.”

Mr. Zhang's interest in Australian racing emerged in 2013 when he watched Fiorente (Ire) win the Melbourne Cup. Of all modern Cups to watch, that was the one because it was a Gai Waterhouse fairytale, and, locally, sentiment was strong.

Since then, Zhang's Yulong operation has become the biggest breeding outfit in Victoria, in a triangle of the biggest farms that includes Widden Victoria and Godolphin's Northwood Park. In fact, Northwood Park and Yulong's farm in Mangalore are next-door neighbours.

“You've only got to watch what Yulong has been doing at the elite sales, not to mention online as well,” Cox said. “Some of the best mares that have come on the market, they have been roundly secured by Yulong, and they're some of the best mares and best yearlings. This is an enviable portfolio of bloodstock, no doubt about it.”

To this day, Cox is missed at Magic Millions and he'll be missed at Godolphin Australia too. It's a testament to the gentleman he is, that he has moved from these positions of prominence so seamlessly.

At Yulong, the extensive and equally well-credentialled team can look forward to Cox's steady hand on the wheel, and it will be a good fit for him.

“I think it will be a good fit,” he said. “I wouldn't have taken the position if I didn't think it would be. I really am excited about the challenge of the role and what lies ahead, and it's something I'm really excited about.

“Mr. Zhang has got big ambitions and the international part of the role was a big enticement as well. It's been an honour and a privilege to be selected, as it's been an honour and a privilege at Godolphin these last five years.”

Imported mare Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never is likely to run for her owner, Yulong Investments, in this year's The Everest, assuming she bounces back to form.

The multiple Group 1 winner failed at her only Australian start in the autumn, finishing 10th in the G1 Queen of the Turf S. at Randwick in April. The 6-year-old looks set to resume in the G2 Sheraco S. at Rosehill on Sept. 9.

“At this stage she is going to head towards an Everest campaign,” co-trainer Adrian Bott told Sky Sports Radio. “A positive run in that race and I think we can link into a race like the Premiere S. as a lead up to The Everest.

“So, the timing will work well but that first-up race will be crucial as to whether we stick to a sprinting campaign or look to stretch her out a little bit later in the preparation.”

BBA Ireland's Michael Donohoe purchased Alcohol Free for 5.4 million gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale last year.

Scheduled for Saturday, July 1, the second day of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival, the race–restricted to fillies and mares–will now be worth €300,000. Owned by Yuesheng Zhang, Yulong will also present a free nomination for 2024 to juvenile Group 1 winner Lucky Vega (Ire) to the owners of the first three placed horses.

The three-time Group 1 winner was one of 35 mares snapped up by the racing and breeding entity, whose total spend was A$19,031,000 on Tuesday. Three other millionaires–there were nine during the first session overall–also made their way into the Yulong fold.

Dual top-level winner Snapdancer (Aus) (Choisir {Aus}) (lot 645), from the Sullivan Bloodstock draft, was acquired for A$3.2 million, while lot 575, Isotope (Aus) (Deep Field {Aus}), out of a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Yankee Rose (Aus) (All American {Aus}), made A$2.3 million from the Eureka Stud consignment. Yankee Rose's daughter Liberty Island (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) landed her second Classic, the G1 Japanese Oaks, on Sunday. Rounding out the quartet of million-dollar mares for Yulong was Promise Of Success (GB) (Dansili {GB}) (lot 620). But a yard as big as Owning Hill needs a conveyor belt of youngsters coming through the ranks and O'Brien can boast just that.

Last season's stats back up such a statement. With 31 juvenile winners on the board in that campaign, O'Brien recorded a tally better than every other trainer bar his father Aidan, who was out on his own on 55.

O'Brien has a typically-strong batch of youngsters to look forward to this term and welcomes quality owners like Al Shaqab Racing, Yuesheng Zhang and Kia Ora Stud to the roster.

He commented, “Every year we are trying to increase the quality of horses we have in the yard. The way to do that is by having owners who have the same lofty ambitions that we have. Our owners want to compete at the top level and we are very lucky to have the support of some ambitious and successful people. Hopefully we can justify their support in us.”

O'Brien will not be represented in the opening 2-year-old maiden of the year at the Curragh on Saturday but describes himself as happy with the progression his youngsters are showing at home on the gallops and says that he expects them to be ready to rock and roll in the coming weeks.

He explained, “I think we are pretty much where we usually are with our 2-year-olds. We usually have our first runners in the mid to second half of April and will be aiming to have them in full swing for the summer. We like to think that our 2-year-olds would be better on their fourth run than on their first run and we like to get them to progress throughout the season.”

The 29-year-old has identified 31 juveniles below that have been showing up well at home on the world-famous gallops ahead of the new season.

I wouldn't have had a lot of horses by Mehmas but he was quite a good one and achieved a rating of 111 over here before doing well in Hong Kong, where he [now called Circuit Stellar] actually won again a couple of weeks ago.

We've had some success with Sioux Nation already and this is a particularly forward filly by him. She shows lots of speed and is owned by Bronson Racing, which is Neil Sands and family, so it would be great if she turns out to be nice for them. She will be one of our earliest fillies.

While the majority of the prominent owner's European-based mares will visit Lucky Vega this year, a number will also be spread out between Frankel (GB), Baaeed (GB), Sea The Stars (Ire), Siyouni (Fr) and Mehmas (Ire), with Donohoe revealing that the ultimate aim is to breed another stallion prospect. 

But the early indication, according to the County Kilkenny native, is that Lucky Vega is worthy of the mammoth support. The leading bloodstock agent and advisor says that he was most impressed by the first foals by the sire down under in Australia and reports the first crop of European-bred foals by the stallion to be catching the imagination of some notable breeders. 

Donohoe said, “We have always been a big believer in Lucky Vega and are happy to support him in a big way. He didn't show what he was capable of on the track and we know that. 

“Okay, he won his Group 1 but a decision was made pretty early in his three-year-old career for him to go to Australia. In hindsight, there were plenty of races that we could have aimed for and won after Royal Ascot with him.”

He added, “I think Jessica Harrington would also agree that her horses might not have been firing on all cylinders during the spring of his three-year-old campaign so there are a lot of reasons to believe that we did not see the best of Lucky Vega on the track for all that he won his Group 1. People seem to be amazed about the backing Mr Zhang is giving Lucky Vega but we have no doubt whatsoever in our minds. He is a fabulous-looking horse and the foals are fabulous as well. 

“I was in Australia earlier in the year for the Magic Millions Sale and I was delighted to see for myself what I had been hearing from all of the top judges down there because his foals really were gorgeous. There aren't as many on the ground here in Ireland yet but the early reports are that they are as good a bunch as you will see so we're very excited. He's getting a lovely type.”

One of the major themes to develop from the sale season in 2022 was the strength of Zhang through Donohoe at all of the major sales. All told, the owner spent roughly €20 million upgrading his broodmare band, concentrating on broodmares by Galileo (Ire) in particular. 

Donohoe explained, “There are so many smart mares booked into Lucky Vega this year. Obviously we put in a lot of work at the mare sales last year on behalf of Mr Zhang but, for these young stallions, there aren't too many nicks. 

“Lope De Vega (Ire) has done quite well himself with the Danehill line but that's probably the only standout. Mr Zhang bought a lot of Galileo mares last year because Galileo is one of these freakishly-good sires whose mares seem to nick with everything. He's just very potent as a broodmare sire. So Lucky Vega has covered a lot of nice Galileo mares already and he will cover a lot more again this year.”

He added, “Physically, Lucky Vega matches up well with these Galileo mares as he seems to be putting the strength into his stock with great, big back ends on them. Because he was a quite precocious and fast horse himself, we think he could inject that speed into the Galileo mares. We think that could be a good cross. 

“But we don't buy mares just for the sake of it either. We put a value on them and, if it goes over that value, we pull up.”

Zhang is expected to support Lucky Vega with over 50 of his own broodmares this year, the majority of which boast mouthwatering pedigrees. Asked to nominate some of the most exciting mares set to visit the young stallion, Donohoe joked, 'where do I start,' before putting forward a few of the more recent additions to the team.

“Let's Misbehave (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) could be a good mare to include,” he said. “She is a half-sister to High Chaparral (Ire) who we bought for €920,000 at Arqana last year. It's a tremendous pedigree and she's already the dam of a high-class War Front filly called Sippinsoda (Fr). She's a young mare who is the dam of a stakes winner from her first three foals and from a proper deep stallion-producing family. She is in foal to Siyouni and will go to Lucky Vega this year so she is definitely one we are excited about. 

“Lucrece (GB) is a beautiful Pivotal (GB) mare who is the dam of Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and a half-sister to Signs Of Blessing (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). She was €710,000 from Arqana last year as well and is a fabulous-looking mare. Hello You was a proper fast two-year-old so Mr Zhang is not just sending those Galileo mares to Lucky Vega. He's giving him a chance to produce something with precocity as well.”

He added, “Expressionism (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is a nice mare out of Lady Springbank {Ire}). She's in foal to him already actually and will go back to him again this year. She actually only cost 200,000gns from Godolphin at Tattersalls in 2021 and is from a good family. It's a family we know well because Eamonn Riley of BBA Ireland bought Lady Springbank for the Gittins family. 

“Revenue Share (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) is an interesting one as she's a sister to the dam of Sea Of Class (Ire). Mr Zhang bought a few mares in Japan to visit Lucky Vega and it's nice because it will be something different. Mr Zhang does a lot of research and follows racing on an international scale and obviously the success that Japan has had and the bloodlines that they are working with interests him greatly. He's investing in that now so it's amazing really.”

They say the secret to becoming an overnight success is the culmination of years of hard work. In the case of this emerging owner-breeder, who enjoyed a breakthrough Classic success with Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo) in the Irish Oaks last year and flexed his muscles at most of the major yearling and mare sales in Europe last term, the seeds had been planted over a decade ago. 

Donohoe explained, “Mr Zhang has been observing and doing his research for over 10 years now and didn't just rush into it without having his homework done like others in his position might have done. 

“He has taken his time and built up a strong team here in Ireland and Australia. He has a really good, young and dynamic team in Australia, headed by Sam Fairgray, and all of his family are involved as well. It's something that he has been building up to for a long time. This whole project has been years in the making. I've learned a lot from Mr Zhang-he's a genius.”

As well as sending a strong book of his own mares to the Irish National Stud resident, Zhang is reported to have a strong understanding of the bigger picture by Donohoe, who revealed that the owner plans on investing in a number of foals by the stallion this year. 

On other notable mares set to visit Lucky Vega, Donohoe said, “It's Magic (Ire) is a Galileo half-sister to Mukhadram (GB) who we gave €490,000 for at Arqana in 2021. It's a deep family. “High Heels (Ire) is another very nice Galileo mare being a stakes-placed daughter of Charlotte Bronte (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). This family is a real fillies-producing family. Recover Me (Fr) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) is another nice stakes-placed mare from a stakes-producing French family that includes So Unique (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who is also in Mr Zhang's broodmare band. 

“Mrs Frankel (Ire) (Frankel {Ire}) is quite an interesting one as well because Mr Zhang is a big believer in Frankel as a broodmare sire. Mrs Frankel is from the family of Gregorian (Ire) and is a sister to Hidden Dimples (Ire) in France. There is a lot of speed in the family.”

He added, “Ligne D'Amour (Ire) is worth a mention being a Galileo daughter of Rosdhu Queen (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). She has a gorgeous Lucky Vega filly foal at foot and will go back to him this year. 

“Atone (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) is a nice mare we bought in foal to Frankel from Juddmonte. She's a sister to Midday (GB) and has a cracking page. She should be a nice mare for Lucky Vega. Lights On Me (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}), who is the dam of Light Infantry (Fr) (Fast Company {Ire}), is another. It's just a very exciting time for the stallion and we're confident that he will justify all of the support.”

Donohoe told TDN Europe last week that Zhang was expanding his string of horses in training in Britain, with Karl Burke set to train 20 two-year-olds for the owner, who is keen not to keep all of his eggs in the one basket with number one trainer Jessica Harrington. 

That approach is somewhat mirrored to the broodmare band with Zhang set to support a number of proven and up-and-coming stallions to go with Lucky Vega. 

Donohoe said, “Mr Zhang is a big fan of Baaeed and is going to send mares to him this year. Lady Hayes (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who was second in the G2 Lancashire Oaks, Shomooly (Frankel) and Aspiring (Ire) (Galileo), a sister to Danedream (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}), will go to Baaeed. 

“He will send three to Frankel. Bocca Baciata (Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}), who won the G2 Kilboy Estate S. for Jessica Harrington, is going to him. As I mentioned before, Mr Zhang has been a massive fan of Frankel from the beginning. He sent a lot of mares to him and bought a lot of mares in foal to him in Australia as well. He's had a big role to play in the initial success Frankel has enjoyed in Australia. 

“The plan is to send German 1,000 Guineas winner Txope (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who we bought at Arqana last year for €1.2 million, to Frankel. French Dressing (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is another nice mare going to Frankel and is actually in England already. She is the dam of Mohaafeth (Ire) (Frankel) so the plan is to go back to him.”

He added, “Rasmiya (Ire) (Galileo) will go to Siyouni (Fr). She is a sister to Above Average (Ire) (High Chaparral). We'll also send Zerziyna (Fr), a Fastnet Rock mare who we bought at Arqana, to Sea The Stars (Ire). She's a daughter of Zarkava (Ire) and is a gorgeous-looking mare. 

“We also plan on sending mares to Mehmas. He has had to do it the hard way and his results speak for itself. He's a proper stallion and his progeny know where the winning line is-they really try to win. Bay Of Islands (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) will go to Mehmas. She's the dam of a stakes winner called Bahrani Star (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). 

“Maria Montessori (Ire) (Galileo), a daughter of Lesson In Humility (Ire) (Mujadil), is from a speedy family and will go to him as well. Slaney East (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), a nice mare we bought in foal to Mehmas from Jim Bolger, will go back to him along with Eaves (Ire) (Galileo).”

Jessica Harrington, who has provided Zhang with the majority of his big-race success, including a breakthrough Classic victory in last year's Irish Oaks with Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), remains the number one trainer for the hugely-successful international ownership vehicle. Harrington also trained Zhang's Group 1-winning stallion Lucky Vega (Ire), who has been heavily supported by his owner since he joined the roster at the Irish National Stud, and those mating plans will be revealed in TDN Europe next week.

The remainder of this year's European crop of runners will be divided up between Joseph O'Brien and Michael O'Callaghan in Ireland while John and Thady Gosden, Archie Watson, Andrew Balding, Charlie Hills and William Haggas feature on the British roster.

“Jessie Harrington will train the majority of the horses this year but we're changing things a little in that we will be supporting a few other trainers as well,” explained BBA Ireland's Michael Donohoe, who manages the racing and breeding interests of the powerful owner.

The reason for the diversification, according to Donohoe, was borne through a desire expressed by Zhang not to have all of his horses housed in one stable. 

Donohoe said, “We have a little over 40 2-year-olds in training this season and, while Jessica will be the main trainer, it's important not to have all of your eggs in the one basket.

“Mr. Zhang has been closely following the career of Karl Burke in England. Karl, Eamonn Reilly [of BBA Ireland] and myself have a long association together, so it looks a good fit for everyone.”

He added, “Karl will train 20 horses for us this year, the majority of which are 2-year-olds, and we're looking forward to that. We've also spread a few out between Joseph O'Brien and Michael O'Callaghan in Ireland and then Andrew Balding, Archie Watson, Charlie Hills, William Haggas and John Gosden in England. 

“When you are dealing with the number of horses that Mr. Zhang now has in training, he is right not to be putting all of his eggs in the one basket. The big thing with racehorses is keeping them healthy and, no matter how much due diligence each yard applies, horses are bound to get sick sometimes. When you have your horses spread out between a few different yards, it's definitely a good thing. 

“All of those trainers we are supporting, they are some of the best at their trade, and Karl is a multiple Group 1-winning trainer who has been operating consistently to a high level for a number of years now. We also bought Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) off Andrew Balding last year and Mr. Zhang had been taking notice of his achievements for a while now as well.”

Multiple Group 1 winner Alcohol Free and the Group 1-placed Gan Teorainn (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) were purchased at last year's Tattersalls December Mares Sale by Donohoe to join the powerful Yulong Investments racing string in Australia. Magical Lagoon charted a similar path down under after that famous Curragh triumph and made her seasonal return for trainer Chris Waller at Rosehill on Saturday. 

Of the 30 or so horses in training with Harrington this season, Danvers Gold (Ire) (Galileo {Galileo {Ire}}) was put forward by Donohoe as being one of the most exciting. However, the leading bloodstock agent admitted that there are a host of talented 2-year-olds bobbing their heads above the parapet in time for the new campaign. 

He said, “Jessica has a few nice Frankels (GB), Galileos and Dubawis (Ire) so it's a very exciting time. She also has Lucky Vega's sister by Phoenix Of Spain (Ire), who has been named Lucky Melody (Ire). The word on Phoenix Of Spain is very good and this particular filly is showing Jessie an awful lot already. 

“There's a very nice No Nay Never filly called With Style (Ire) who we bought at Goffs there as well. She is showing a lot and there's an exciting filly, Danvers Gold, who was second in her only start last year at Naas. We've high hopes for this filly and she might even run in one of the fillies' Guineas trials early in the season. There's a nice Showcasing (GB) colt called Imperial Magic (GB) who should also be out early. He looks quite precocious and could be one for one of those early-season maidens.”

Donohoe added, “Karl has a lovely Dandy Man (Ire) colt. I actually bought his brother, Show Respect (Ire), who ran in Hong Kong today [Saturday].  He also has a very nice Dark Angel (Ire) homebred out of Black Gold Fairy–this horse is showing a lot.

“He has another homebred, Lady Hamana (Aus), who is an I Am Invincible filly out of Lake Hamana. She was bred on Northern Hemisphere time down in Australia. She was actually trialled in Australia and, when she started to show a bit, Mr. Zhang decided to send her to England. She wasn't beaten far in a listed race in France last season so we're hoping she's a stakes sprinter to look forward to this year.

“Karl also has an Invincible Spirit (Ire) filly out of I Am Beautiful (Ire) who was bred by Lucky Vega's breeder Pat O'Kelly. We've had a lot of luck buying off Pat. There's also a nice No Nay Never colt out of Lady Corsica (Ire) with Karl while Archie Watson has a nice Frankel colt. Archie is already talking about the Chesham for that horse, which is exciting. We're really looking forward to the new season.”
