The G1 Juddmonte International, rated the Longines World's Best Race in 2020, will be run for a record £1.25 million in 2024, York Racecourse and Juddmonte announced on Friday.

In 2023, the Juddmonte International was worth £1 million and produced another high-class winner in Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who ended the year as the joint highest-rated horse in the world outside Japan. The feature event on the opening day of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival also retained its position as one of the top ten races in the world.

The 25 percent increase in prize-money for 2024 cements the Juddmonte International as the richest race ever run on the Knavesmire, as well as being the joint most valuable all-aged contest staged at a racecourse-owned fixture in Britain.

The support of Juddmonte for this flagship contest dates back to 1989. Over those 35 years, it has regularly featured the famous green and pink silks of the late Prince Khalid Abdullah, with them crossing the line in front on two occasions, courtesy of Twice Over (2011) and, most famously, Frankel (2012).

William Derby, chief executive and clerk of the course at York Racecourse, said, “We are delighted to announce this boost to the prize fund of our flagship race, the Juddmonte International, to £1.25m, confirming it as the richest race ever run at York. Juddmonte Day on Wednesday, August 21 is a tremendous way to open the Sky Bet Ebor Festival, on the first of three World Pool racedays.

“The significant increase in prize-money forms part of a wider strategy to ensure the race continues to attract the best horses in the world for racing followers at York and beyond, to enjoy. From Roberto to Sea The Stars, Frankel, to one of his progeny, Mostahdaf, just last year, it is a race that consistently attracts the best in equine talent. Juddmonte have been fantastic partners and curators of this race with York since 1989 and we remain deeply appreciative of their wonderful support of York and wider British racing.”

On behalf of Juddmonte, chief executive offficer, Douglas Erskine Crum, said, “In our 35th year of sponsorship, this 25 percent increase in value demonstrates both York and Juddmonte's commitment to increasing prize-money and further enhancing the Juddmonte International's status as one of the world's very best races. We congratulate York on consistently making prize-money a top priority across all their meetings, thereby taking the lead amongst UK racecourses.”

The annual ARC Malton Open Day, featuring trainer Julie Camacho's dual Group 1-winning sprinter Shaquille (GB) (Charm Spirit {Ire}), has been set for Sept. 10.

Part of the National Racehorse Week initiative, the Malton Open Day–organised by racing charity Racing Welfare–sees 11 trainers, including Camacho, open their yards to the public. In addition, a new partnership with York Racecourse for 2023 lets visitors continue their family day out at the racecourse's YorkMix Family Sunday Raceday. There will be regular appearances by popular children's character, Bluey, throughout the day, as well as free bouncy castles and free face painting for children. Proceeds of ticket sales will go towards Racing Welfare's wide-ranging support services for everyone working in the industry. Combined tickets for both the ARC Malton Open Day and the YorkMix Family Sunday Raceday are available to purchase at the early bird price of £15 with all under 18s free. Entry to the Malton Open Day only costs £7.50. Prices will increase to £17.50 and £10, respectively, beginning on Sept. 1. For more information, and to purchase tickets, please visit the Malton Open Day website.

Racing Welfare's Head of Community Engagement, Adam Ferguson, said, “We are thrilled to offer the public such a wonderful opportunity to get up close with some of North Yorkshire's finest equine stars, and thanks go to the trainers for their support in opening their yards to the public. The partnership with York Racecourse this year really does make the Malton Open Day the ultimate family day out, and we look forward to seeing lots of racing fans of all ages enjoying the numerous activities whilst helping raise much-needed funds for our charity.”

Saturday's European black-type count stands at a baker's dozen, with eight group races in Britain and Ireland alone featuring several movers and shakers towards the elite level kicking off with Juddmonte's TDN Rising Star Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in York's G3 Strensall S. and culminating five hours later with the fellow Sir Michael Stoute-trained Passenger (Ulysses {Ire}) in the G3 Weatherbys Global Stallions Winter Hill S. at Windsor.

Nostrum was surprisingly beaten by fellow TDN Rising Star Epictetus (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) in Goodwood's G3 Thoroughbred S. last time, but is back on quick ground in this contest over what could prove an ideal trip of nearly nine furlongs so it is a case of game on again. His previous performance when upstaging some smart peers including the subsequent G3 Sovereign S. dead-heater Embesto (GB) (Roaring Lion) and G2 Hungerford S. runner-up New Endeavour (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) in Newmarket's Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. stands up as one of the key pieces of mile form this year and connections retain full faith.

“We all called it wrong, we thought he'd have liked the ground the last day as he's a big horse and he bends his knee a bit,” Juddmonte's European racing manager Barry Mahon said. “We were all wrong and Ryan just felt that he couldn't pull himself out of it, it was gluey. There was the factor too that he'd been off the track for so long, there may have been a bounce on his second start–we don't know but he's training well and we're looking forward to seeing him. We think he'll have come forward for the run and we're looking forward to getting him back on a better surface and a more conventional track. Hopefully we'll see the Nostrum we saw at Newmarket again.”

Epictetus Poised For Celebration…
Less than an hour after Nostrum graces York's Knavesmire, the Gosdens send Epictetus back to Goodwood for the G2 Celebration Mile as he builds towards the major autumn tests. With the G1 St James's Palace S. and G1 Sussex S. third Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in attendance, this will provide a gauge as to where George Strawbridge's son of Thistle Bird (GB) (Selkirk) is among the leading milers. “He's stepping up in grade again on Saturday, but the drop down to a mile has suited him well and he's been in good order since his last run,” Thady Gosden said. “I don't think he necessarily needs soft ground–he's relatively versatile as regards to it.”

Prestige Contests Continue Thick And Fast…
In between these two contests, there is the G3 Prestige Fillies' S. for 2-year-old fillies at Goodwood where Shaikh Duaij Al Khalifa's Carla's Way (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) gets the chance to atone for a disappointing effort in Royal Ascot's G3 Albany S. with Newtown Anner Stud Farm's 10-length Thirsk novice winner Darnation (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) in opposition. Back at York minutes later, the £500,000 G2 City of York S. features Marc Chan's G1 Prix de la Foret and G1 British Champions Sprint S.-winning TDN Rising Star Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) who is just about the best there is at this seven-furlong trip.

“It's amazing that York can put up that much prize-money for a group two race,” Chan's racing manager Jamie McCalmont said. “They deserve the race to get upgraded to a group one when they can come up with that sort of money. He certainly doesn't owe us anything right now, but as Frankie says, he's like an ATM machine so let's hope that will continue.”

On a big day for Chan, last year's G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Lezoo (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) enjoys a class drop in Newmarket's Listed Hopeful S. after her break since flopping in the G1 Commonwealth Cup. This is also the farewell ride for Andrea Atzeni, who departs for Hong Kong after the meeting. “Andrea is a great guy and the way he's ridden over the last couple of months is as well as he's ever ridden,” McCalmont added. “This is a good stepping stone back, she loves the course, we get her ground and she's fine over the distance, so fingers crossed.”

Best Of The Rest…
As the afternoon action winds down in Britain, The Curragh gets going with the G3 Newtownanner Stud Irish EBF S. over a mile hosting some big middle-distance Classic prospects for 2023. When it comes to these kind of juvenile tests, there is always added intrigue where The Aga Khan's representatives are concerned and so the Dermot Weld-trained Tipperary maiden scorer Shelaka (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) will have plenty of eyes on her. The card also features another significant prize for the juveniles in the six-furlong G3 Heider Family Stables Round Tower S., while the fillies and mares get their shot in the nine-furlong G3 Snow Fairy Fillies S.

Elsewhere, York's Listed Julia Graves Roses S. features Opulence Thoroughbreds and Teme Valley's TDN Rising Star and G3 Molecomb S. runner-up Purosangue (GB) (Aclaim {Ire}), while another TDN Rising Star lines up in Windsor's Listed Weatherbys Digital Solutions August S. over an extended 11 furlongs. That is Anthony Oppenheimer's Kempton novice winner Lion's Pride (GB) (Roaring Lion), who holds an entry in the G1 St Leger and while this is an unorthodox prep for that Classic, the half-brother to Courage Mon Ami (GB) (Frankel {GB}) could yet become a leading light for Doncaster.

Silver Racing's G2 July S. runner-up Lake Forest (GB) (No Nay Never–Lady Aquitaine, by El Prado {Ire}) was unable to concede weight all round when following up in a Newmarket novices' heat earlier this month and rebounded in style to cause a 16-1 upset for the William Haggas stable in Friday's G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack S. at York.

Comfortable in rear until surging into contention after halfway, he challenged the leading wave underneath the stands' side fence approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly, despite drifting left in the closing stages, to prevail by a length from 'TDN Rising Star' Johannes Brahms (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), with the same margin back to King's Gamble (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) in third.

“He just ran awful at Newmarket last time,” reflected William Haggas after registering a third winner at the meeting. “He got upset beforehand, he was stupid to post and he was edgy in the stalls. Today he was really calm, good going down and we saddled him in the stables and walked him across. Newmarket can be like that when you box them up at home, but whatever happened he didn't run at all. Prior to that he had run a very good race in the July S. [also at Newmarket]. I had to just put a line through his last run, I had no choice. We had always planned to come for this, and after his race last time it almost put us off, but we thought why not have a go. He's owned by a new syndicate so I've no idea who will do the [traditional Gimcrack] speech. I probably put them off coming today, you couldn't fancy him really, although I did say to my son I thought he'd run well.”

Pedigree Notes
Lake Forest, the 10th of 11 foals, is one of eight scorers from nine runners out of G3 Sirenia S. third Lady Aquitaine (El Prado {Ire}), herself a half-sister to Listed October S. victrix Secret Garden (Ire) (Danehill). The April-foaled chestnut is a half-brother to stakes-winning G2 Prix de Royallieu runner-up Lady Of Kyushu (Smart Strike), the stakes-winning Clint Maroon (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and the dual stakes-placed Star Fortress (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). He is also kin to a yearling filly by Bated Breath (GB) and to the dam of GIII Honeymoon S. victrix Selenaia (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}). Secret Garden, in turn, produced a trio of black-type winners headed by G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and G1 Criterium International-winning sire Roderic O'Connor (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Lake Forest's third dam is G1 Cheveley Park S.-winning British champion Durtal (Ire) (Lyphard).

Lake Forest (16/1) was a beaten odds-on favourite at Newmarket last time but the No Nay Never colt proved that run all wrong by sweeping up the stands' side to land the @ABE_Dubai Gimcrack Stakes for William Haggas.@TomMarquand | @yorkracecourse pic.twitter.com/yigKDMEyjC

Mick and Janice Mariscotti's ultra-consistent 6-year-old gelding Coltrane (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}–Promise Me {Ire}, by Montjeu {Ire}) settled for placings in this term's G1 Gold Cup and G1 Goodwood Cup and exacted revenge on Courage Mon Ami (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Quickthorn (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) with a determined effort in Friday's G2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York.

Coltrane, a 14-length runner-up in this marathon contest last year, had risen through the staying ranks to notch victories in last term's G2 Doncaster Cup and this term's G3 Sagaro S. and raced in fourth through the early stages. Inching into third at halfway, the 11-4 second favourite made continued headway to wrest control from habitual frontrunner Quickthorn approaching the two pole and was driven out in the latter stages to withstand the late threat of Courage Mon Ami by 1 1/2 lengths in game fashion. Giavellotto (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) fared best of the remainder and stayed on to finish a half-length adrift in third.

“That was fully deserved, he's been incredibly consistent and he is adored by everyone,” commented Anna Lisa Balding. “Tom [Marquand] gave Quickthorn such a great ride at Goodwood and he fully deserved that, but it was Coltrane's turn today and he's done it in brilliant style. I'm thrilled to win another Group 2 for Mick and Janice [Mariscotti] as they have been incredibly patient. He had surgery two years ago and he hasn't looked back since, but that is why he doesn't go to Australia. He's like a pet, he's adorable and I think it will be Ascot [Champions Day] next as he ran so well in the [G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup] race last year.”

Stable companion Nate The Great was pulled up in the home straight and vanned off the track for treatment. “Hopefully Nate The Great will be okay,” Balding added. “They have put a compression boot on him and taken him back to the stables. The vets are there and they are doing what they can.”

Reflecting on the performance of Gold Cup hero Courage Mon Ami, Franke Dettori said, “He wasn't keen, but it took him a while to warm up and then he came good. The [Group 1] penalty and shorter trip made Coltrane a better horse than me. We didn't let Quickthorn go today and that made a big difference. It was the right result today, Coltrane and my horse first and second in the Gold Cup and first and second today. The [G1] Prix du Cadran over two-and-a-half [miles] would be tailor-made for him and I guess he'll come back for the Gold Cup next year without me.”

Coolmore and Westerberg's G2 Ribblesdale S. heroine Warm Heart (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Sea Siren {Aus}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}) was unable to land a telling blow when fifth behind stablemate Savethelastdance (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in last month's G1 Irish Oaks and stepped out of the shadows to claim a career high in a thrilling renewal of Thursday's G1 Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks, becoming the 99th Group 1 winner for her sire.

The 9-1 chance, who had earlier outbobbed Irish Oaks runner-up and 'TDN Rising Star' Bluestocking (GB) (Camelot {GB}) in Newbury's May 20 Listed Fillies' Trial, settled into a comfortable rhythm racing four lengths off the searching tempo pounded out by Savethelastdance on the front end and inched closer once into the long home straight. Making her presence felt when looming large on the bridle approaching the quarter-mile marker, she seized a narrow advantage with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining as Free Wind (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) threatened out wide and was resolute under a James Doyle drive in the closing stages to outpoint that rival by a head in a thrilling ding-dong tussle. Savethelastdance stayed on gamely once headed and finished 2 1/4 lengths adrift in third, providing her sire with yet another Group 1 trifecta.

“She's a very good filly who won very well in Ascot and then she just got back in a slowly-run race [at the Curragh] and it was hard to make up ground,” said Aidan O'Brien after claiming a seventh success in the contest. “She loves fast ground, she's a very slick filly and I think she's probably made for the [GI Breeders' Cup] Filly & Mare Turf. She's a nice size to her, she's strong and has tactical speed as well. She could go straight there [to Santa Anita] or she could run on Irish Champions Weekend or Arc weekend, but she likes nice ground and maybe we shouldn't overface her. The lads do keep horses in training as 4-year-olds, including fillies, so I'd say they'll definitely think about it at the end of the year. She's progressing from run to run.”

Reflecting on the performance of Savethelastdance, the trainer added, “Ryan [Moore] wanted an even pace for his filly as she stays well. We were worried about the [faster] ground for her today. When the ground gets slow it helps her as it makes it tougher for the others, but she still ran a great race. She always runs her race, but she's better on soft ground. Whereas most horses struggle, she improves. She definitely could be an Arc filly as, on softish ground, she grows another leg. She has the choice of the St Leger or the Arc. If she ran in the St Leger the Arc comes up two weeks after that, so it's a little bit tight and she'd probably have to do one or the other. We'll probably give her an easy time now and see. We always felt she could be a filly for the Arc, especially if the ground got soft.”

It was a case of so near yet so far for rider Frankie Dettori after he was narrowly denied a Group 1 double at the meeting on his season-long lap of honour. “She's run a super race, but I couldn't get out when I wanted to. I had to wait an extra half-furlong and that meant James [Doyle] had all the momentum. I got to him, but I just wish I'd been able to get my filly rolling beforehand. That nine-pound [weight-for-age] pull just took its toll in the end. I think the pocket I got stuck in cost me.”

Ground conditions were a direct factor in Bluestocking's defeat, according to trainer Ralph Beckett. “She's just not quite as effective on that quicker ground as she is on slower ground and that's all it is,” he said. “She's run her race, she's run well and she's run through the line, but she's just not quite as good on quicker ground. Come the autumn, I'd like to think there will be a few nice targets for her.”

Galileo: In Numbers

With the victory of Warm Heart, the late Coolmore supremo Galileo sired his 99th individual Group 1 winner worldwide. A total of 44 of his top-level winners are fillies, with Warm Heart the 41st British Group 1 winner for her sire. He is also represented by 40 Irish winners of top-tier races, as well as 26 in France and 15 in America. His most decorated British runner is undoubtedly his undefeated champion son Frankel (GB), who garnered 10 Group 1 laurels.
From a distance perspective, Warm Heart joins 30 other top-level winners to have won between 11 furlongs and 12 furlongs, the most of any distance category for Galileo. However, he did sire Clemmie (Ire) to take the Cheveley Park S. over six furlongs. An additional 22 have prevailed at distances beyond one-and-a-half miles.
Warm Heart is also the second Group 1 winner out of a Fastnet Rock mare, joining Hong Kong Gold Cup and dual Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup hero Russian Emperor (Ire).
The majority of Galileo's Group 1 winners have done their best work as 3-year-olds (67), with 23 juvenile Group 1 winners to his credit and 38 have triumphed at the highest level at four.

Pedigree Notes

Warm Heart is the fifth of seven foals and one of four scorers produced by G1 Manikato S., G1 Doomben 10,000 and G1 BTC Cup heroine Sea Siren (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), herself kin to the pattern-race winners Oratorio (Aus) (Stravinsky) and Lady Dehere (NZ) (Dehere). The February-foaled bay, whose third dam is G1 Karrakatta Plate heroine Hold That Smile (Aus) (Haulpak {Aus}), is a full-sister to G3 Derrinstown Stud Fillies S. runner-up Celestial Object (Ire) and the winning 2-year-old colt Bremen (Ire). She is also kin to a yearling colt by Camelot (GB). Sea Siren has returned to Australia and just foaled a colt by Coolmore's Home Affairs (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}).

Simon Munir and Isaac Souede's G2 Queen Mary S. runner-up Relief Rally (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}–Kathoe {Ire}, by Fayruz {GB}) impressed when annexing Newbury's Weatherbys Super Sprint by daylight last month and pounced late to secure a fourth win in five starts, upped to six furlongs for the first time, in Thursday's G2 Sky Bet Lowther S. at York.

The 2-1 favourite, who had earlier snagged early-season wins over five furlongs at Windsor and Salisbury, was sharply into stride and settled under cover behind the leaders in fifth after the initial strides. Bustled along with a quarter-mile remaining, she was angled to the stands' side for a clear passage passing the furlong pole and quickened smartly under continued rousting in the closing stages to deny Cherry Blossom (Ire) (No Nay Never) by a length nearing the line. Symbology (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) finished a head adrift in third in a bunch finish for the minor placings.

“You don't get much time in a six-furlong race to worry, but I thought she had a bit to do and was really impressed with the way she picked up,” admitted William Haggas. “I think she's a pure 2-year-old. I've had a few fillies, one called Besharah won this race, and she didn't go on. I think it's really hard, especially when they are small. We don't want to get wrapped up in them being a fantastic 3-year-old and this may well be her year, in which case we want to capitalise. She's pretty good and she's good in her head, although she dances a bit in the paddock. She's easy to train. I haven't had chance to talk to Tom [Marquand], as this is [owner] Simon [Munir]'s day. It's his first ever trip to York.”

Looking over the horizon, Haggas added, “Whether we have one [more run] before her last run [this year], I don't know. If we do, it will be the [G2] Flying Childers with a Group 2 penalty, but that's 50-50. Then it will be the [G1] Cheveley Park or the [G1] Prix de l'Abbaye.”

Marquand added, “We hoped stepping up to six [furlongs] would work in her favour and I was looking forward to it. Over five, she'd hit a little flat spot before finishing really strongly and, over six, that just didn't happen today. She had plenty to pass a furlong out, but they were all within a length. To be honest she never had me worried and she hit the line hard. William has done a remarkable job to get her to win the pot she did after Royal Ascot. I hope it's the Cheveley Park [next]. If she goes for the Abbaye I won't be able to ride her [due to her low weight], but William will make the right decision.”

Pedigree Notes

Relief Rally, the latest of eight reported foals and one of five scorers for her dam, hails from the family of G1 Irish 2000 Guineas-winning sire Jaazeiro (Sham) and G1SW Irish champion Woodstream (Northern Dancer). The April-foaled bay is a full-sister to G3 Chipchase S. victor Koropick (Ire). Their second dam Water Spirit (Riverman) is an unraced half-sister to Listed Grand Prix de Marseille Vivaux runner-up Private Enquiry (Ire) (Gorytus) and G2 Gallinule S. fourth and sire Northern Date (Far North).
