Friday's G1 Fillies' Mile became a test of stamina and character and there was no shirking of the issue from TDN Rising Star Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shambolic {Ire}, by Shamardal) as she provided Aidan O'Brien with a record-equalling sixth renewal of the Newmarket feature.

Beaten twice since winning Leopardstown's G3 Silver Flash S. in July, the 1.5million gns Book 1 relative of Viva Pataca (GB) (Marju {Ire}) was better than the bare form of her third in this track's seven-furlong G2 Rockfel S. last month and had race tactics to suit if not the soft ground with stablemate Brilliant (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) the target up ahead.

Checked momentarily as the Rockfel runner-up Shuwari (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) was carried left into her path by the G2 May Hill S. runner-up See The Fire (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) approaching two out, the 9-2 shot was pulled around that duo by Ryan Moore and began pursuit into the dip. Taking until the last 50 yards to get by, she was firmly on top at the line to reverse form with Shuwari and prevail by half a length from that 3-1 favourite, with See The Fire 3/4 of a length away in third.

“It all went a little bit pear-shaped in mid-season and it's hard to come back like that, but she's classy and very brave,” O'Brien said. “She's very exciting for next year and I'd imagine the lads will want her to start in the Guineas, but she'll have no problem going further and could get the Oaks trip.”

“Obviously the Moyglare went wrong–she ran a bit keen because she'd made the running the first twice, but when her chance was gone Ryan looked after her,” he added. “She came here for a lovely, educational run the last day and because her season got interrupted she wouldn't have been 100% at her best today. We were kind of coming here more for education for next year than today being the be-all and end-all, but I thought Ryan was really incredible on her.”

Ollie Sangster said of Shuwari, “I was very happy and she ran a great race. She saw out the trip well–I think we just got outstayed in the last 50 yards by Ryan and obviously that is a very good filly. I think she liked the ground as it wasn't that soft. Everything went well apart from the fact we didn't win. That will be her for the season and I suppose we will work back from the 1000 Guineas. I wouldn't be afraid of pitching straight up into a 1000 Guineas, as she is a straightforward filly to train. The dream is still alive.”

Andrew Balding was also satisfied with the effort of See The Fire and said, “She travelled strongly, but she got there sooner than Oisin wanted to. She just tired late on, but she is an exciting filly and we are looking forward to next year. I think we will look towards the 1000 Guineas with her.”

Pedigree Notes

Ylang Ylang is the first foal out of Listed Pretty Polly S., Listed Height of Fashion S. and Listed Chalice S.-placed Shambolic who is a half-sister to the aforementioned dual G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup hero and multiple Hong Kong champion Viva Pataca who raced as Comic Strip while in the UK. She is also kin to the GI Flower Bowl Invitational and GI Diana S. heroine Laughing (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) and to the dam of the listed scorer and G3 Lillie Langtry S.-placed Twitch (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}).

The family, which received an update last year when Mottisfont (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}) was third in the G3 Sweet Solera S., includes the multiple graded-stakes scorer and sire Brave Act (GB) while the fourth dam is the champion 2-year-old filly Circus Ring (Ire) (High Top {Ire}). Shambolic's yearling colt by Kingman (GB) sold for 425,000gns at the town's recent Book 1 to Qatar Racing and the China Horse Club, while she also has a filly foal by Siyouni (Fr).

Unable to live with Carla's Way (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus) when outmanoeuvred and outspeeded in the G2 Rockfel S. at Newmarket last month, Shuwari (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) and Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}) face an entirely different test on Friday as they compete in the track's feature G1 Fillies' Mile. In all likelihood, fast ground over seven furlongs suited neither filly and now that the rain has come the kind of bias that proved ideal for Carla's Way's style will have disappeared. We know that Shuwari is made of the right material based on her prior defeat of Fallen Angel (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) in the Listed Star S. at Sandown in July, hours before Ylang Ylang proved worthy of her TDN Rising Star status when capturing Leopardstown's G3 Silver Flash S. The question now is how they match up on a level playing field.

Shuwari's trainer Ollie Sangster commented, “She's a straightforward horse who relaxes and settles well and I can't see the step up in trip being a problem. It's nice to have a chance in a race like this and hopefully she will run well for us.” Ryan Moore said of Ylang Ylang, “She was taken off her feet a bit on quick ground over seven furlongs here last time, so the step up to a mile will suit and she has form on soft if we get a lot of rain. I'd like to think she is the filly to beat if returning to the form of her Leopardstown win.”

This is probably no match, with Doreen Tabor's Sandown maiden winner Classical Song (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) one of the lesser-exposed types held in high regard. Jeff Smith's G2 May Hill S. runner-up See The Fire (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Anthony O'Callaghan and Sabina Kelly's G3 Weld Park S. scorer Caught U Looking (Ire) (Harzand {Ire}) look capable of better and have little to find to get to the level of the main protagonists.

Smith's racing manager David Bowe said, “She still ran a bit green in the May Hill and has come on since then mentally. We're hoping that she will do us proud and she is obviously a really smart filly and we'll see how she fares. She has a really stout pedigree and she has the looks to go with it. She's a beautifully-proportioned filly and just neat and tidy for a two-year-old. We're very lucky that both her and Ghostwriter seem to be in good shape for the obvious next year. We don't want to tempt fate and get too excited, but it's nice to have a couple of nice horses on the books and we're in good shape.”

Skellet To The Test In The Oh So Sharp…
Also on the card is the seven-furlong G3 Godolphin Lifetime Care Oh So Sharp S., which features Juddmonte's recent acquisition Skellet (Ire) (Kingman {GB}). Earning TDN Rising Star status over this trip at Salisbury last month, the Ralph Beckett-trained half-sister to Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy) is met by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's comparatively vastly-experienced four-times winner Chic Colombine (Fr) (Seahenge) and Godolphin's course-and-distance scorer Dance Sequence (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Juddmonte's racing manager Barry Mahon said of Skellet, “We're looking forward to seeing her out and we'll find out a bit more about her. It looks a good race–Charlie Appleby's filly looked very good the day she won. Ours is a big filly and it's all about next year with her, but it will be good to give her a bit more experience. She has a beautiful pedigree [and] the fact she's by Kingman made her extra appealing.”

City Of Troy Faces Seven In The Dewhurst…
Saturday's G1 Native Trail's Dewhurst S. at Newmarket will see Coolmore's TDN Rising Star City Of Troy (Justify) make his eagerly-awaited third start as he looks to seal juvenile champion honours. Kept away from slow ground after his win in the July Festival's G2 Superlative S., he may have to deal with those conditions with rain expected ahead of the seven-furlong highlight. He will be joined by stablemate Henry Adams (Ire) (No Nay Never), who is to be partnered by Frankie Dettori, with Aidan O'Brien withdrawing Henry Longfellow (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), Johannes Brahms (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), River Tiber (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and Unquestionable (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Three of the main rivals to the favourite will be Teme Valley and Ballylinch Stud's G2 Champagne S. winner Iberian (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), Shadwell's G3 Tattersalls S. scorer Alyanaabi (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) and Juddmonte's supplemented G2 Mill Reef S. winner Array (Ire) (No Nay Never).

All who witnessed the Doncaster debut success of Carla's Way (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}–Sulaalaat {GB}, by New Approach {Ire})) already knew that she was a talented performer, but Shaikh Duaij Al Khalifa's imposing chestnut had to show it where it matters and she duly delivered in Friday's G2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Rockfel S. at Newmarket.

Gifted an ideal lead, a strong pace and fast conditions in this seven-furlong “Win and You're In” for the $1-million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, the Crisfords' 7-2 shot was not for catching once James Doyle had committed passing two out.

Despite the admirable effort of the 13-8 favourite Shuwari (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) from an impossible position, the contest had already been decided and there was a safe 2 1/4-length margin between them at the line. Ballydoyle's G3 Silver Flash S.-winning TDN Rising Star Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was back to form a further 2 1/2 lengths away in third, but was outpaced some way out in a race that looked top-level in all but name.

Carla's Way, who had showed she could run as fast as only the best can do when defeating the smart pair Star Of Mystery (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) and Serene Seraph (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) on her introduction 20 days before disappointing when eighth in the G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot, had undergone a wind operation before finishing second to the subsequent G2 May Hill S. winner Darnation (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) on ground that would have been unsuitably soft in Goodwood's G3 Prestige S. last month.

Simon Crisford is looking at Santa Anita as a real possibility now that she has the ticket. “She did it really well, I think the fractions early on were pretty strong so all credit to her for picking up well,” he said. “I think she was slightly running on empty the last hundred yards, so that's probably as far as she wants to go trip-wise. I think the Fillies' Mile back here in two weeks might just be stretching her stamina too much, but a quick two-turn mile at the Breeders' Cup in California might be okay.”

Ed Crisford added, “There is a lot of New Approach in her and she is a big, tall, scopey filly and for sure next year she should train on. Whether she will quite stay a mile I'm not sure. We will get this year out of the way and then think about next year and see how she is training over the winter before thinking of the 1000 Guineas.”

Shuwari's trainer Ollie Sangster has no stamina concerns for the runner-up, who lost nothing in surrendering her unbeaten record racing against the bias against a top-drawer opponent. “I was very happy and she ran great,” he said. “I suppose the way the race panned out, she had a lot to do but she stayed on well. We will see how the next week goes, but we could think about coming back for the [Oct. 13] Fillies' Mile. She had been off for 64 days and she will come on again, so will definitely think about that.”

Pedigree Notes

Carla's Way, who at £350,000 was the second-highest-priced filly at the Goffs UK 2yo Breeze Up Sale, is the third of three current foals out of Sulaalaat who sported the Shadwell silks and was at her best over this trip. Registering a career-best in a handicap at the same Doncaster venue at which her daughter starred on debut, she is a full-sister to the dam of another member of the 2023 juvenile class who has produced something out of the ordinary in the Ripon debut winner but subsequently disappointing Listed Rose Bowl S.-placed Asadna (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}).

The third dam Sumoto (GB) (Mtoto {GB}) was responsible for the G1 Eclipse S. hero Compton Admiral (GB) (Suave Dancer), the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. winner Summoner (GB) (Inchinor {GB}) and the G2 Ribblesdale S. runner-up Twyla Tharp (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) who in turn produced the G1 Irish Champion S., G1 Prince of Wales's S., G1 Nassau S. and G1 Yorkshire Oaks heroine The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}). This is also the family of the high-class G1 July Cup and G1 Prix de la Foret winner Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}).

Aidan O'Brien trainee Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shambolic {Ire}, by Shamardal), who made all for a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette with an impressive 2 3/4-length debut tally tackling seven furlongs at the Curragh in her only prior start, maintained her perfect record with a carbon-copy performance in Thursday's G3 Jockey Club Of Turkey Silver Flash S. at Leopardstown.

The prohibitively priced 1-4 favourite was slick from the inside gate and seized an early two length advantage in this black-type bow. Untroubled through halfway, she was shaken up with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and kept on powerfully under urging in the closing stages to comfortably hold Vespertillo (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths. She extends O'Brien's record in the seven-furlong contest to an unmatched 13.

“She had a good draw, so obviously Ryan [Moore] used it again, and the next day we'll take our time with her,” the trainer revealed. “She hit the gates the first day she ran and Ryan did the right thing. Today she had the draw and she did the same thing. He said she was probably doing plenty for him in front and he gave her a beautiful ride. We're delighted, Ryan was very happy with her and he said she ran straight through the line. She's a very low mover and he felt that the ground was a little bit deep, but he was very happy with her. Hopefully now it'll be the [G2] Debutante before the [G1] Moyglare and we'll let her sit in and relax. She's very genuine, she tries very hard and wears her heart on her sleeve. Natural is a good way to describe her.”

Pedigree Notes

Ylang Ylang, a 1.5-million guineas Tattersalls Book 1 graduate, is the first of three foals out of Listed Pretty Polly S., Listed Height Of Fashion S. and Listed Chalice S. placegetter Shambolic (Ire) (Shamardal). The March-foaled bay's dam, who has also produced a yearling colt by Kingman (GB) and a weanling filly by Siyouni (Fr), is a half-sister to dual G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup-winning multiple Hong Kong champion Comic Strip (GB) (Marju {Ire}) and GI Flower Bowl Invitational and GI Diana S. heroine Laughing (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Shambolic is also a half-sister to the unraced Blinking (GB) (Marju {Ire}), whose descendants include stakes-winning G3 Lillie Langtry S. third Twitch (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), stakes-winning G3 Premio Dormello third Romsey (GB) (Mukhadram {GB}) and G3 Sweet Solera S. third Mottisfont (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}).

There was an abundance of pre-race hype surrounding the Aidan O'Brien-trained debutante Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shambolic {Ire}, by Shamardal), who was hammered down to 8-13 favouritism for Friday evening's Kildare House Hotel Irish EBF Fillies Maiden at the Curragh, and she rewarded that faith with a 'TDN Rising Star' display in the seven-furlong test. Relaxed under Ryan Moore during the preliminaries, she was professional on the lead throughout and extended her margin of superiority, keeping on powerfully under mild coaxing, inside the final quarter-mile to easily account for Dollerina (Ire) (Territories {Ire}) by an impressive 2 3/4 lengths. She becomes Frankel's 34th Rising Star and joins a list which includes dual Group 1-winning G3 Hoppings S. runner-up Nashwa (GB).

“She was never away [from home], as she was so babyish, she was working very well and we're delighted with her,” O'Brien said. “It was nice to see her doing that and she's probably going to come on leaps and bounds. Ryan [Moore] gave her one back-hander to get down and stretch and said she was only playing in front. The [G2] Debutante S. should be perfect for her. She's working with the good colts no problem, which is usually a very good sign.”

Pedigree Notes
Friday's Insights features 1.5-million Tattersalls October Yearling graduate Ylang Ylang.

17.30 Curragh, Mdn, €20,000, 2yo, f, 7fT
YLANG YLANG (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who debuts for Ballydoyle in the maiden won in the last two years by the subsequent Group 1 performers Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Discoveries (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), was one of the six Frankel millionaire lots at the most recent Book 1 Sale. The second-highest-priced filly at that auction, the March-foaled bay is the first foal out of the G1 Fillies' Mile fourth Shambolic (Ire) (Shamardal), a half to the accomplished pair Viva Pataca (GB) (Marju {Ire}) and Laughing (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Ryan Moore rides her in preference to the stable's Opera Singer (Justify), a half-sister to War Front's top-level winners Hit It A Bomb and Brave Anna, while there is another regally-bred individual in the line-up in Michael Ryan's Finsceal Luas (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) , the 11th foal out of his champion Finsceal Beo (Ire) (Mr. Greeley) starting out for Jim Bolger.

14.45 Doncaster, Novice, £9,950, 2yo, 7f 6yT
ARABIC LEGEND (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}), the second foal out of Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's GI E.P.Taylor S. heroine Sheikha Reika (Fr) (Shamardal), is poised to make his debut for the Andrew Balding stable. Also starting out is Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum's Al Mootamarid (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), a Marco Botti-trained half-brother to none other than Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) who despite that cost a mere 200,000gns at the Tatts Craven Breeze-Up; and Godolphin's Stormy Waves (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a Charlie Appleby-trained grandson of the prolific producer Pieds De Plume (Fr) (Seattle Slew) who was a 525,000gns Book 1 purchase.

17.00 Curragh, Mdn, €20,000, 2yo, 6fT
BENNU (IRE) (Magna Grecia {Ire}) is a big-deal representative of Coolmore's first-crop sire, being the 11th foal out of the Niarchos Family's excellent producer Alpha Lupi (Ire) (Rahy). Trained for the operation by Willie Browne, the May-foaled half-brother to the heavyweight pair Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) and the former's group 1-winning full-sister Discoveries (Ire) is up against some big-yard runners including Ballydoyle's second-string and fellow newcomer House Of Aviz (Uncle Mo), a full-brother to the GIII Santa Ysabel S. winner and GI Starlet S. and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up Donna Veloce.

20.25 Curragh, Mdn, €20,000, 3yo/up, 10fT
SATURN (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) carries on the theme set earlier on the card by his relative Bennu (Ire) (Magna Grecia {Ire}), with this Jessie Harrington-trained newcomer the landmark first foal out of the brilliant Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}). Grey like his dam, the Niarchos colour-bearer has a wide draw to contend with on his racecourse bow.
