The Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association's fourth annual online stallion season auction begins on Wednesday, Dec. 15, and runs through Wednesday, Dec. 22.

In addition to stallion premiums, this year the WTBOA has added a chance for bidders to receive a bonus. All winning bidders will now be eligible for one of two bonus level amounts, as they will be entered into a drawing to receive a credit of up to $1,000 or the actual bid amount, whichever is less, on their stallion season purchase. The second drawing will be for a $400 bonus.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=166 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=167 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

In addition, it is expected that a $7,500 or greater bonus will be available for all progeny of stallions whose seasons sold for the 2022 breeding season. The bonuses will be part of two 3-year-old stakes to be run at Emerald Downs during their 2026 racing season.

Over 90 seasons will be offered for the 2022 breeding season with many attractive proven and fledgling stallions offered. Among those listed are stallions standing in Kentucky, New York, Florida, California, Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and New Mexico.

Donations from farms large and small once again prove how generous the Thoroughbred industry can be. Just to name a few of the stellar stallions represented are American Freedom, Army Mule, Coast Guard, Conveyance, Country House, Cross Traffic, Curlin to Mischief, Disco Partner, Faversham, First Dude, Gio Ponti, Graydar, Keen Ice, Karakontie, Lea, Majestic City, Ministers Wild Cat, Protonico, Sir Prancealot, Skipshot, Smiling Tiger, Speightster, Tapiture and Tapwrit.

WTBOA also has one additional stallion season available for bidding – Echo Town. Information on him can be found on the WTBOA website (www.washingtonthoroughbred.com).

The 2020 Washington Annual Awards celebration was held via Zoom Saturday evening, February 27. Many industry members tuned in via their phones or other devices to be part of the ceremonies.

Kristin Boice and Marylou Holden's talented juvenile Bodenheimer was named horse of the year. This year the award honored the late Washington horseman Richard Wright. The son of 2020 leading sire Atta Boy Roy was a stakes winner at both Keeneland and Prairie Meadows last year. He is trained, as was his sire, by now Kentucky resident Valerie Lund. In addition Bodenheimer, who is the second stakes winner Larry Romaine bred out of the stakes-winning A. P. Indy mare Beautiful Daniele, was named champion turf horse and shared co-champion two-year-old honors with undefeated Dutton.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Dutton, who races for Rising Star Stable VIII and is trained by Howard Belvoir – who received one of three special racing achievement awards – is from the first and only crop of the late Washington champion Noosito, who was not only Washington's leading freshman sire, but also the second leading 2020 freshman sire on the West Coast.

Champion two-year-old filly honors went to Chad and Josh's Time for Gold, who was victorious in two Emerald Downs stakes. Her owners, Chad Christensen and Josh McKee, were also the state's leading owners of Washington-breds. Time for Gold was one of three progeny of Harbor the Gold who won stakes victories for the successful partnership.

2019 Washington horse of the year Baja Sur, by Smiling Tiger, added two more championship titles to his impressive total: champion older horse or gelding and champion sprinter. He races for Auburn residents John and Janene Maryanski and Gerry and Gail Schneider.

Warlock Stables, Kelly Dougan and trainer Roddina Barrett's Alittlesstalk encored her 2019 champion title with an even more impressive record in 2020 when the four-year-old daughter of Demon Warlock won two stakes and placed in two more in her seven-race skein.

Tawnja Elison's Unmachable, by Macho Uno, also took off where he had in 2019. The state's champion two-year-old added two more stakes wins, one over older runners, to earn the champion three-year-old title. His trainer, Jack McCartney, was also honored with a special training achievement award.

Glen Todd-owned and -trained Miss Prospector gave her sire Harbor the Gold his 24th state champion runner when she took champion sophomore filly honors.

Other horse honors went to Omache Kid (plater), Fortune's Freude (most improved plater), Melba Jewel (broodmare) and Winter Knight (OTTB).

The WTBOA/WHPBA Special Recognition Award was warmly given to Washington Horse Racing Commission executive secretary Doug Moore for all the work he put into getting approval for racing at Emerald Downs and holding the WTBOA August horse sale amid complex COVID-19 restrictions and protocols.

Other awards were given to Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Pabst, who took their sixth leading breeder title; and to jockey Juan Gutierrez for gaining a record number of wins at Emerald Downs.

The program for the event is posted on the WTBOA website at www.washingtonthoroughbred,com.

Smiling Tiger continued to enjoy commercial success at the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association Summer Yearling and Mixed Sale on Tuesday, with one of his young horses topping the sale at Emerald Downs for the second time in four years.

The $70,000 sale topper, Hip 57, was signed for by Brian Koriner, agent, for Samantha Siegel's Jay Em Ess Stable. The handsome chestnut was from the Critter Creek Farm consignment, as agent for PT Syndicate #1 LLC. Koriner was the initial trainer for Smiling Tiger's Grade 1-winning daughter Spiced Perfection. Hip 57 is the second foal out of the $172,010 stakes-placed Swiss Yodeler mare Grand Yodeler.

The 2017 sale topper, Baja Sur, also by Smiling Tiger, was named Washington's Horse of the Year in 2019.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Smiling Tiger, one of the fastest runners of his generation and the multiple Grade 1 winner was himself a 2008 WTBOA sale graduate. The stallion holds court at Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif. Of the three other Smiling Tiger yearlings consigned to this year's sale, two others brought prices of $30,000 and $25,000 while the other was a $39,000 RNA.

Koriner also purchased the second highest-selling colt, Hip 77, for Siegel. Also sold by agent Critter Creek Farm, this time as agent for Premier Thoroughbreds LLC and Alan Klein, the colt hails from the first crop of triple Grade 1 winner Lord Nelson and is out of the good producing Indian Charlie matron Lottawampum.

Former Washingtonian and now successful California trainer Mark Glatt, as agent, purchased the third highest-selling colt from the same consignor as the sale topper. The Monrovia-based conditioner went to $42,000 to acquire Hip 62, a colt from the first crop of Grade 2 winner Danzing Candy and out of $137,206 stakes winner Ilikcandy, by Malibu Moon.

Two fillies brought a $30,000 bid, the Smiling Tiger—Princess Hillary filly (Halvorson Bloodstock Services LLC, Agent for Sale Mahlum) who was noted above, and Hip 91. From the first crop of Grade 1 winner Cupid, by Tapit, the young distaffer is the first offspring of $109,265 earner My Palmilla, a daughter of Tribal Rule who hails from the family of Washington champions Rings a Chime and Bella Mia, all of whom were bred and offered through the WTBOA Sales program by Griffin Place LLC.

After 14 yearlings were withdrawn and 25 were RNAs, the 75 yearlings that were listed as sold averaged $12,652 with a $7,500 median. Sixteen yearlings brought a bid of $20,000 or more.

Among the 18 broodmare/broodmare prospects consigned, Hip 204, Cecileabration, a daughter of Graeme Hall who was offered bred to Smiling Tiger, was signed for by Checkmate Thoroughbreds, agent, for $12,500. The mare also was a member of the Critter Creek Farm consignment for PT Syndicate #1 LLC.
