There are still two weeks remaining in 2023, but we are already looking ahead to the future.

In this final episode of the Friday Show for 2023, bloodstock editor Joe Nevills and publisher Ray Paulick examine 10 bold predictions for the new year, covering such subjects as a potential Japanese victory in the Kentucky Derby, efforts to free Jorge Navarro and Jason Servis, a solution to the Churchill Downs turf course problem, an additional race for the Breeders' Cup world championships, a final resolution to the Medina Spirit drug disqualification from the 2021 Derby, a Rich Strike update, an exciting and stimulating new sponsorship for Quarter Horse racing, and some news about Mike Repole's National Thoroughbred Alliance, not to mention a tidbit about possible entry into racing by an international superstar from the entertainment world.

Of course, these are only predictions coaxed out of a special hat with the help of a magic wand Nevills found in an old muckpile at Great Lakes Downs in Michigan on a recent trip there. We don't know that these predictions are going to come true, so Paulick has enlisted a Magic 8-Ball to determine how 2024 will unfold.

We appreciate the longstanding support of the Friday Show by Woodbine, whose Thoroughbred race meet ends on Sunday with mandatory payouts across the board.

It's been nearly 20 years since Richard Eng was contacted by a representative of Wiley & Sons publishing to write a book designed to educate newcomers to horse racing on how to handicap and bet on what can be a very complicated and intimidating game.

The book, “Betting on Horse Racing for Dummies,” was part of the company's “dummies” brand of “taking on complex concepts and making them easy to understand.” They've published hundreds of titles for “dummies.”

“Betting on Horse Racing for Dummies” has been successful to the point that Eng was asked by the publisher one year ago to update the book in areas that have changed over the last two decades. The revision was a virtual rewrite of the entire book.

A longtime racing publicist, handicapper, newspaper columnist and radio host, Eng joins Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills in this week's Friday Show to discuss the “Dummies” book, how to introduce new people to racing, and his thoughts on how the game is ever evolving.

Thanksgiving week, the Friday Show looked back to recognize some of the events of this past year, from the outstanding to the dubious, bestowing Turkey Awards to the winners.

This week, we look ahead, putting together an early Christmas list of things we would like to see for the Thoroughbred industry in 2024 and beyond.

Paulick Report news editor Chelsea Hackbarth joins Ray Paulick in trying to determine whether some of our wishes are realistic or pie in the sky fantasy.

For example, can members of the American Graded Stakes Committee pull their noses out of their statistical binders long enough to ponder the question of whether their decisions are helping or hurting the long-term interests of the Thoroughbred breed?

Can critics of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority be persuaded to focus their energy in a positive way to make the national oversight body as effective as it can be instead of working to tear it down?

And can the movement by the veterinary community and others to employ wearable digital technology to help reduce injuries become a reality in the near future? The technology is there, but can it be ramped up to record data on all horses in all races and timed workouts throughout North America as the American Association of Equine Practitioners is proposing?

Rich Perloff remembers well his first day at the races, going with his father to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., where they saw future Hall of Famer Ack Ack suffer his lone defeat in a 1971 Horse of the Year campaign that included Eclipse Awards as champion sprinter and champion older male.

Fast forward to last weekend, when Perloff signed off FanDuel TV (formerly TVG) for the final time after a 22-year run with the horse racing network that originally hired him as a researcher before putting him on the air as a host and handicapper. Perloff had performed many times before, but it was in front of a live audience in theaters, not television cameras.

Throughout his years at FanDuel, Perloff developed a bond with viewers, especially on the slow racing days of Monday and Tuesday, when he would be the solo anchor for a four-hour shift. He relates that it was like sitting at the track with friends, sharing stories about favorite horses, movies, and life in general.

Perloff joins Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills in this week's Friday Show to talk about the route he took from the theater and teaching on college campuses to a two-decade career on television. He also shares some insights on handicapping, especially on how newcomers to the game can become more proficient at picking winners. As for his next act, Perloff said he'll be spending more time acting and directing (saying he never really left the theater during his time at FanDuel).

Larry Collmus, the voice of the Breeders' Cup since 2012, tries to keep his own rooting interest out of his race calls. At this year's world championships at Santa Anita, however, Collmus made an exception to the rule.

“I try to stay impartial but not today,” he posted on the X social media channel prior to the Saturday card that kicked off the Breeders' Cup races with the Dirt Mile. “Let's go Cody's Wish!”

Collmus, who is back at Del Mar for the fourth year to call the races at the Bing Crosby autumn season, joins Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills on this week's edition of the Friday Show to talk about the extraordinary saga of two-time Dirt Mile winner Cody's Wish and his namesake Cody Dorman, the 17-year-old who developed a special bond with the horse while battling a rare disease. The emotional tale ended sadly one day after the Breeders' Cup with the passing of Dorman, whose story captured the hearts of racing fans everywhere.

Collmus also discusses the challenges of calling the Breeders' Cup and the preparations that go into it, along with the interactions he has with the NBC on-air and production team, and the differences between announcing for an on-track crowd and a television audience that might not be as familiar with the sport.

He also shares some of the things he likes so much about Del Mar, where the Breeders' Cup championships will be held back-t0-back in 2024 and '25.

On this week's episode of The Friday Show, Ray Paulick is joined by bloodstock editor Joe Nevills and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth to discuss the storylines and betting angles on Saturday's Breeders' Cup card.

The topics they cover include which race is the true main event of Saturday's card (and why it might not be the Classic), how the Japanese contenders will factor into this year's races, the potentially electric pace setup for this year's Classic, and more.

Not that long ago, the injury that the champion filly Echo Zulu sustained to her left front fetlock during a pre-Breeders' Cup workout at Santa Anita likely would have ended her life.

Today, thanks to the advancements in veterinary medicine and surgical procedures, the daughter of Gun Runner has a fighting chance not only to survive, but to have a healthy and productive second career off the racetrack.

“My dream for her is that one day you'll see her running around in a pasture in Kentucky with a foal on her side and we can see her babies perform on the racetrack,” said Dr. Ryan Carpenter, the Southern California-based veterinary surgeon who performed the operation on the Steve Asmussen-trained filly Oct. 14. “That would be a dream come true for all of us and that's what we're shooting for. It's a realistic goal.”

Carpenter joins Ray Paulick and editor-in-chief Natalie Voss in this week's Friday Show, providing details on the type of injury Echo Zulu sustained and explaining how the cutting-edge arthrodesis surgery is performed and how it has evolved in recent years. He also cautions that “we have a lot of hurdles that we have to get over in the coming weeks,” but points out the increasing number of success stories that have come out of this type of surgery.

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) program has been in effect nearly five months while its Racetrack Safety regulations began in July 2022.

As we report each week in our updates on cases before HISA's testing and enforcement arm, the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit, medication violations are being discovered, fines and suspensions are being assessed, appeals are being heard, and there has been one case that's been overturned when an appeal was made to the Federal Trade Commission, the government agency that oversees HISA.

Lisa Lazarus, CEO of HISA, returns to the Friday Show for a wide-ranging interview to discuss some of these cases, how HISA is amending certain regulations based on industry input, and what is being done with some of the recommendations from its report on equine fatalities at Churchill Downs this spring. Lazarus also explains how the atypical findings policy works, differentiating between contamination from hay or feed supplements vs. positive tests from human medications or street drugs that may be traced to a trainer's employees.

At least two cases have been overturned on appeal, one involving medication and the other alleged overuse of the riding crop that led to a purse disqualification. Lazarus said she does not consider those as defeats for HISA, but as proof that the system is working. “If we win every case, then we're doing something wrong. because then it means it's not a fair system,” she said. “It's far more important that there's a system that everyone can buy into and believe in.”

The 2014 Kentucky Derby is remembered as the launching point for California Chrome's near-miss Triple Crown bid, but the horses that finished behind him have made their mark around the world.

Bloodstock editor Joe Nevills takes a look at where every member of the 19-horse field is today, nine years after the race. Some have gone on to prominent stud careers, some have ended up standing at stud overseas, some have gone on to succeed in fields outside of the racing and breeding industry, while others left us too soon.

“Aftercare is not an afterthought.”

That's the mantra that drives CARMA – the California Retirement Management Account – to fulfill its mission to help fund the retirement of California-raced Thoroughbreds and educate the public and racing community about aftercare.

Lucinda Lovitt, executive director of CARMA, joins Ray Paulick and editor-in-chief Natalie Voss on this week's Friday Show to talk about this critical element of the Thoroughbred industry that, only a few decades ago, was discussed in hushed tones among industry insiders.

“The general public has taken a good look at our industry and one thing they expect,” Lovitt said, “ is that these horses have something to do when their racing careers are over. “

CARMA, along with other regional organizations and the national Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, has helped bring about a “formalization” of the retirement process over the last 15 years, Lovitt said.

'It's important for owners to remember,” Lovitt said, “that – now especially – a retirement plan needs to be part of an owner's business plan from the beginning.”
