Ce Ce, who captured the Beholder Mile (G1) at Santa Anita and the Apple Blossom (G1) at Oaklawn last year, is trained by Michael McCarthy, who ventured from his Santa Anita base with City of Light to win the $9 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream in 2019. The 5-year-old daughter of Elusive Quality has raced twice this year, debuting with a 3 ¼-length victory in a seven-furlong optional claiming allowance April 17 before coming up short in a fourth-place finish in the two-turn Santa Maria (G2) a month later.

Wesley Ward-trained Kimari, second in the Commonwealth (G1) at Royal Ascot last year, became a Grade 1 stakes winner last time out in the seven-furlong Madison April 3 at Keeneland.

Lothenbach Stables Inc.'s Bell's the One, who finished three-quarters of a length behind Kimari while finishing second in the Madison, is a third Grade 1 winner on the list of 14 Rooney invitees, having won the Derby City Distaff at Churchill Downs last September. The Neil Pessin trainee most recently finished fourth in the Derby City Distaff.

The first of three Princess Rooney Invitational lists also includes a trio of graded-stakes winners who are Grade 1 stakes-placed: Medallion Racing and partners' Estilo Talentoso, Lloyd Madison Farm LLC's Sconsin and Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC's Victim of Love.

Juan Arriagada-trained Estilo Talentoso won two of six starts at Gulfstream, including a maiden score and an overnight-stakes victory, before hitting the road to finish in a dead-heat with Belle's the One for second in the Madison, check in third in the Derby City Distaff, and win the Bed o' Roses (G3) at Belmont.

Gregory Foley-trained Sconsin, who won the Eight Belles (G2) last year, is coming off a victory in the Winning Colors (G3) at Churchill. The daughter of Include finished second behind Gamine in the Derby City Distaff in her prior start.

Todd Beattie-trained Victim of Love, who captured the May 8 Vagrancy (G3) at Belmont, concluded her 2020 racing second with a third-place finish in the Ballerina (G1) at Saratoga.

Holly Hill Stables LLC's Pacific Gale, who captured the Inside Information (G2) and the Hurricane Bertie (G3) during Gulfstream's Championship Meet, is among several Grade 2 stakes winners invited to the Princess Rooney. Other Grade 2 winners include Frank Fletcher Racing Operations Inc's Frank's Rockette, Godolphin LLC's Lake Avenue, Gary Barber's Laura's Light, and Kueber Racing and partners' Vault.

LBD Stable LLC and David Ingordo's Our Super Freak, who finished third behind Vault last time out in the Ruffian (G2) at Belmont; Daniel J Lopez and George Chestnut's Chub Wagon, who remained undefeated while winning the Shine Again at Pimlico Sunday; and Windylea Farms IV LLC's Thissmytime, who finished second behind Pacific Gale in the Inside Information; round out the Princess Rooney invitation list.

The Princess Rooney invitation list is scheduled to be updated on June 20 and June 27.

In two winning starts over the Belmont Park main track, Tommy Town Thoroughbreds' Victim of Love has displayed an affinity for the Nassau County oval and will vie to keep such ways intact in Friday's 64th running of the Grade 3, $300,000 Bed o' Roses for older fillies and mares going seven furlongs.

Trained by Todd Beattie, Victim of Love's pair of winning starts at Belmont Park took place when sweeping the last two editions of the Grade 3 Vagrancy. She arrived at last year's Vagrancy as the longest shot in a field which included graded stakes winners Come Dancing and Royal Charlotte, but handled the test with flying colors when capturing the 6 ½-furlong event by 1 ¾ lengths.

Following a next-out third in the Grade 1 Ballerina at Saratoga, Victim of Love was out of action for over six months and returned in February with a runner-up finish in a Laurel Park optional claiming test. She successfully redeemed herself next out as the second betting choice in this year's Vagrancy on May 8 with an outside stalking trip under Joel Rosario from second and fought gamely down the stretch to win by 2 ¼ lengths.

“She likes the going up there,” Beattie said. “She has tactical speed and Joel realized the pace was going slow. I thought he moved what might have been a little early for her, but it wasn't [too early] because of the slow pace. They got the jump on things and boy is she tough to run down. She lays it on the line. They're not going to creep by her, she'd dog 'em, that's for sure.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Since her Vagrancy victory, Victim of Love has recorded only one serious work, travelling five furlongs in 1:00.60 at Penn National on May 28.

“I thought two works in 27 days would be a little bit of a squeeze,” Beattie said. “She gets a lot out of her daily training. She's going to work every day, she just isn't going for published workouts. If I try to squeeze two works in there, it would be a little hard for her. I think she gets more out of big, aggressive gallops and strong training.”

Victim of Love is out of the Awesome Again mare Spacy Tracy, who has produced all winners from five progeny of racing age, including graded stakes victress Benner Island and two-time stakes winner High North.

Rosario will pilot Victim of Love from post 5.

Trainer John Kimmel will seek to turn the tables on Victim of Love with Holly Hill Stables' Pacific Gale, who was third in the Vagrancy.

After two full calendar years without a trip to the winner's circle, the 6-year-old Flat Out mare ended a 17-race slump with an upset win in the Grade 2 Inside Information on January 23 at Gulfstream Park at 16-1 odds. She carried her newfound winning ways into another South Florida stakes conquest in the Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie on March 20 en route to the Vagrancy.

Although winless throughout her 2019-20 seasons, Pacific Gale placed at graded stakes level five times prior to winning at such caliber.

Kimmel said changing some things up with her training pattern proved instrumental in Florida during the winter, including utilizing the jogging path at Palm Meadows Training Center.

“She really liked that a lot. We had to sort of improvise when we came back here. We do a lot of 'around the world',” Kimmel said. “They go on to the training track, jog to the pony shed, go on to the main track and sort of gallop all the way around the backstretch and come back past the starting gate and back on to the training track and finish up there.”

In the Vagrancy, Pacific Gale was a step slow coming out of the gate and hurried into contention while racing in between horses down the backstretch. She came with a late run in the final furlong, but just missed second a nose to Sadie Lady.

Kimmel said the slow start deterred her chances of winning.

“I thought she was a little compromised in her last start by some issues in the gate. That took her out of her running style,” Kimmel said. “I don't see any reason why she shouldn't fire another good one. She seems to be doing really well. Her color looks great and she's eating great.”

Kimmel said Pacific Gale has always run solid races from a figures standpoint, but a combination of development and changing training technique have resulted in higher prosperity with the gallant mare.

“She really came into herself this year. If you look back on her numbers, she's running similar numbers as she did in the past, but maybe the level of competition might have been a little bit tougher,” Kimmel said. “She's getting a little more confident in herself. It's been nice to see her come forward and win some graded stakes races because she hadn't accomplished that. She placed in more than and a handful of them and to see her actually win some is great.”
Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, a two-time Bed o' Roses winner, retains the mount from post 7.

Bringing an unbeaten record in six starts is Daniel J. Lopez and George Chestnut's Chub Wagon, who will make her graded stakes debut for trainer Guadalupe Preciado.

The Pennsylvania-bred daughter of Hey Chub broke her maiden for a $20,000 tag in November at Parx before notching two more victories at the Philadelphia oval. Chub Wagon won an optional-claiming sprint at the Big A in April and after defeating her Keystone State counterparts in the Unique Bella, she took her talents to Maryland where she won the Skipat on May 15.

For the first time in her career, she raced off the lead in the Skipat, tracking the pace from third and handled the new tactics with aplomb when capturing the six-furlong event by two lengths.

Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. was aboard for her open company stakes triumph and retains the mount from post 6.

Estilo Talentoso has proven herself a force to be reckoned with this season, arriving at the Vagrancy off two Grade 1 placings for trainer Juan Arriagada.
Never off the board in a baker's dozen lifetime starts, the 4-year-old daughter of Maclean's Music came from humble beginnings making her debut for a $16,000 tag in January 2020 at Gulfstream Park, but broke her maiden on sixth attempt at Gulfstream Park five months later at the South Florida oval. Her final start of last season was also her first stakes victory when capturing Gulfstream Park's Escena on August 20 at a one-turn mile.

After finishing third in the Wayward Lass at Tampa Bay Downs in her year debut, Estilo Talentoso ventured outside the Sunshine State for the first time when second in the Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie at Laurel Park. She solidified her graded stakes placing when finishing a late-closing second to Kimari in the Grade 1 Madison at Keeneland, followed by a third in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff at Churchill Downs.

Estilo Talentoso is owned by Medallion Racing, Barry Fowler, Parkland Thoroughbreds, Little Red Feather Racing and BlackRidge Stables.
Breaking from post 8, Estilo Talentoso will be piloted by Hall of Famer Javier Castellano.

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott sends out Lake Avenue, who will try to make amends after an uncharacteristic distant fourth as the favorite in the Grade 2 Ruffian on May 2.

The Godolphin-homebred daughter of Tapit out of multiple Grade 1-winner Seventh Street won the Grade 2 Demoiselle in December 2019 during her freshman campaign in gate-to-wire fashion.

After going winless in four starts as a 3-year-old, she displayed different tactics in her 4-year-old debut when coming five lengths off the pace after a slow start to defeat an optional claiming field going seven furlongs at Gulfstream Park. The same dimensions were on conveyed in the next out Heavenly Prize Invitational on March 5 at Aqueduct, which she won by 6 ¾ lengths.

Breaking from post 1, Lake Avenue will be ridden by Junior Alvarado.
Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey attempts his third Bed o' Roses victory with Helen K. Groves and Helen Alexander's Alandra, who is 2-for-2 over Big Sandy.

The homebred 4-year-old daughter of Blame arrives off a sharp optional claiming triumph going a one-turn mile on May 15 at Belmont, where she registered a career best 85 Beyer Speed Figure.

Third in the Grade 1 Alcibiades in October 2019 at Keeneland in her second career start, Alandra is out of the graded stakes-winning A.P. Indy mare Altesse and hails from the prominent broodmare line of Courtly Dee.

Jose Lezcano will be in the irons from post 3.

Completing the field are multiple graded stakes-placed Piedi Bianchi [post 2, Manny Franco] and last out allowance winner Baynerness [post 4, Luis Saez].

The Bed o' Roses is named in honor of Alfred G. Vanderbilt's dual champion, who earned title of Champion 2-Year-Old Filly in 1949 and was crowned Champion Older Mare two years later. Trained by Hall of Famer William Winfrey, Bed o' Roses defeated colts in the 1950 Lawrence Realization travelling 1 5/8 miles. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1976.

The Bed o' Roses is carded as Race 8 on Friday's 11-race program at Belmont Park, First post is 12:50 p.m.

Tommy Town Thoroughbreds' Victim of Love edged clear to a 2 1/4-length score in Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Vagrancy Handicap, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares at Belmont Park.

Trainer Todd Beattie said it was an emotional victory after nearly losing the mare to colic following her third-place effort last summer in the Grade 1 Ballerina at Saratoga.

“I actually was a tick choked up in the interview yesterday after the race,” said Beattie. “She puts such an effort out and when she came back she was breathing hard. She just gives it to you and so many horses don't always give that effort, but she's not that way. Although that was fairly easy for her, she put in a big effort.

“She coliced last year at Saratoga after she was third in the Grade 1,” continued Beattie. “I had to go to surgery with her at Rood and Riddle and we had to nurture her back. When you nurture one back and they get all the way back there to where they left off the year before, that gives you a real sense of pride.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The 5-year-old Speightstown mare, piloted by Joel Rosario, successfully defended her title in the 71st running of the prestigious sprint by stalking the early speed of Sadie Lady before taking command at the stretch call.

“Joel gave her a hell of a ride. You couldn't draw it up any better than that,” said Beattie. “She has tactical speed and he knew with the slow pace to go ahead and move a little earlier than you normally would. She put a good effort in.”

Victim of Love won last year's renewal off a three-month layoff and entered Saturday's title defense from a nine-week respite, garnering an 88 Beyer.

“She was fresh and the filly had really been doing good,” said Beattie. “She's been on an upswing and the time away from the game freshened her up a little bit. I had hoped to have a prep, but a race at Maryland three weeks out didn't go.”

A native of Antigo, Wisconsin, hometown of Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and the late horseman Clyde Rice, Beattie said he prefers to live in a small town and train from his private facility at Penn National.

“We have 50 stalls, a couple Equicizers and seven paddocks,” said Beattie. “I grew up in northern Wisconsin in the same town as Wayne Lukas and Clyde Rice and we raced bush races in Wisconsin. As soon as I graduated and could get paid to do this, I came out here and went to work for Clyde.”

Beattie is arguably best known for campaigning the multiple graded stakes winner Fabulous Strike, who won five graded events for the conditioner on the NYRA circuit, including the 2007 Grade 1 Vosburgh.

The veteran conditioner said as much as he enjoys and respects winning big races in New York, he looks forward to heading home.

“When I cross that Hudson, I have a lot of respect for those guys there,” said Beattie. “You have to come with a runner. We make darn sure we're coming with something that can run some.

“I'm 100 percent country boy,” added Beattie. “I don't do real well in the city. I appreciate the fact that I ship in and then see it in the rearview mirror and I get to go home at night to my little farm in the mountains.”

Beattie said Victim of Love's win was well received by the local racing community.

“Penn National is a real big draw in the countryside. Everyone follows her closely,” said Beattie. “My phone blew up with everyone calling and congratulating me. They all feel part of it.”

Beattie's wife, Amanda, is a key member of the team and gallops many of their horses, including Victim of Love. He said he values his wife's honest assessment of their stock.

“She's a real accomplished rider and rides this filly a lot. Last year at Saratoga she did all the riding there and is a good road team person,” said Beattie. “My wife might say things that some people wouldn't say. She's an accomplished rider and it comes with a lot of wisdom. Every day you get up and work on the horses, you learn something new.

“We were both thinking she was going to lay a good one down,” he added. “We were concerned about the time off, but we felt she was going to lay it down. She's doing really good this morning, too. She ate all of her feed and looks good. I'm really happy with her.”

The accomplished Beattie owns a career record of 1,739 career wins from 8,156 starts for purse earnings of more than $27 million, but he said he prefers to keep his operation small.

“I'm a horse lover and I like working around the horses,” said Beattie. “I had times where I had a lot of horses and really didn't like it. I had 100 horses at one time and I didn't like it at all. I ended up being a business manager rather than a horse trainer. I like to train horses. I ride every day myself and I like to work among the horses. That's how I was raised.”

Boasting a record of 18-6-3-3 with purse earnings of $408,199, Victim of Love has demonstrated remarkable consistency in the female sprinter division. The well-bred 5-year-old is out of the graded-stakes winning Awesome Again mare Spacy Tracy and is a full-sister to graded stakes winner Benner Island and multiple stakes-winner High North.

“I'm sure she'll be going into their broodmare band when the time comes. They're looking for horses like her,” said Beattie.

Beattie, true to his horseman roots, said he is not quite ready to commit to a potential next start in the Grade 3, $300,000 Bed O' Roses on June 4 during the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival.

“I'd rather have her tell me how she's doing and then come up with a plan for her,” said Beattie. “They all go a little better if you're really aiming for a spot rather than having the horse to tell you that you'd better pick a spot. We'll wait for her to tell the coach to look for a spot.”

Tommy Town Thoroughbreds' Victim of Love made it back-to-back victories in the Grade 3 Vagrancy Handicap on Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., sitting just off pacemaker Sadie Lady and wearing that rival down in the final furlong to win the 71st running of the 6 1/2-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares by 2 1/4 lengths.

Sadie Lady nosed out 3-2 favorite Pacific Gale for second, with Piedi Bianchi and Honor Way completing the order of finish.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=291 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid= data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

A 5-year-old Kentucky-bred mare by Speightstown trained by Todd Beattie, Victim of Love was ridden to victory by Joel Rosario, who was scoring his fourth win of the day. She ran 6 1/2 furlongs on a fast track in 1:17.27 after chasing Sadie Lady through fractions of :23.01, :45.64 and 1:10.50.

Victim of Love paid $6.30 as the second choice in the wagering. She carried 121 pounds, one less than Honor Way and Pacific Gale. The latter, coming off back-to-back graded stakes victories this winter at Gulfstream Park, hopped in the air at the start under John Velazquez, breaking behind the field and then rushing up to each contention in the run down the backstretch.

“She came home really nicely and exploded at the end and I was really proud of that effort,” said Rosario. “She put in a really nice race. She's fast and it was a very good performance.”

Victim of Love began her career for Tommy Town and trainer Henry Dominguez as a 2-year-old in New Mexico, racing first at Zia Park and then at Sunland Park where she broke her maiden in her third start and earned black type next out in the Island Fashion Stakes.

Sent east to Beattie after her sixth start, Victim of Love added the What A Summer Stakes in January 2020 at Laurel, finished second in the G3 Barbara Fritchie and then took the Vagrancy in a 27-1 shocker over odds-on favorite Come Dancing.

She's now won six of 18 starts at seven different racetracks.

“Last year when she came here, she was a big price because she ran badly in the Nellie Morse [going one mile in March 2020 at Laurel Park] when we tried her going longer,” said Beattie. “I tried to rate her, but she wasn't happy about that. She wants to be up there and involved early. That's her number. The distance is perfect. Six and a half or seven furlongs is ideal. She can go a mile, but not at this level.”

Beattie said the Grade 3 Bed O' Roses on June 4 was a possibility but noted that Victim of Love was running without Lasix for the first time in the Vagrancy. “This was new territory for us,” said Beattie. “We're going to figure it out together.”

Despite breaking a step slowly from the inside post position, Joel Politi's Serengeti Empress, quickly moved to the front under Luis Saez and never looked back, winning the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Saturday.

The second choice in the wagering at 3-1, the Tom Amoss-trained 4-year-old filly by Alternation defeated 5-2 favorite Bellafina by about a length, covering seven furlongs in 1:21.63 after setting sizzling fractions of :21.75, :43.74 and 1:08.32. Victim of Love finished third, with 2019 Ballerina winner Come Dancing fourth and Mexican star Letruska fifth in the field of seven fillies and mares, 4 and up.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“This is a win and you're in for the Breeders' Cup. Can't wait,” said Tom Amoss, who trains the 2019 Kentucky Oaks winner, in reference to the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series that will give Serengeti Empress and automatic, fees-paid berth in the Filly & Mare Sprint, to be run at Keeneland on Nov. 7.

Serengeti Empress was winning for the seventh time in 17 career starts. The Ballerina was her second victory of 2020, the filly having won the G2 Azeri at 1 1/16 miles at Oaklawn on a sloppy track earlier this year.

After breaking fastest, Letruska battled with Serengeti Empress in the long run down the backstretch and around the turn, with Cookie Dough third and Bellafina fourth and to the outside.

Into the stretch, Letruska began to fade, but Victim of Love came up the rail to challenge and Bellafina applied pressure to Serengeti Empress' right flank. Just when it appeared those two might have a chance to take over, Serengeti Empress spurted clear under an aggressive hand ride from Saez in the final sixteenth.

Blue Devil Racing Stable's homebred Come Dancing emerged as one of the country's leading older female sprinters last summer at Saratoga Race Course, and trainer Carlos Martin is hopeful the 6-year-old mare will flash that same form when she goes after a second straight victory in Saturday's Grade 1, $300,000 Ballerina presented by NYRA Bets at the Saratoga Springs, N.Y., track.

The 42nd running of the seven-furlong Ballerina for older fillies and mares is one of five graded stakes worth $1.95 million on a Runhappy Travers Day program highlighted by the 151st renewal of the Grade 1, $1 million Runhappy Travers for 3-year-olds going 1 1/4 miles.

Also on the card are the Grade 1, $300,000 Longines Test for 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs; Grade 3, $200,000 Troy for 4-year-olds and up sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass; and Grade 3, $150,000 Waya at 1 1/2 miles on turf for older fillies and mares. The card will be broadcast on Saratoga Live on FOX Sports and MSG Networks.

Named for the inaugural winner of the Maskette, now contested as the Go for Wand, in 1954, the Ballerina also serves as a “Win and You're In” qualifier for the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on November 7 at Keeneland. Maryfield won the 2007 Ballerina en route to victory in that year's first running of the Filly & Mare Sprint.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Come Dancing is attempting to become only the second horse to win multiple editions of the Ballerina following Shine Again in 2001 and 2002 for late Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens.

“She really seems like she's thriving. She loves Saratoga. She's put on some weight since her last race and everything has gone pretty good,” Martin said. “We haven't had any setbacks, haven't missed any training, so I'm excited about the opportunity for her to do something special and hopefully get back-to-back Ballerinas. That would be like a dream.”

Martin is the grandson of late Hall of Famer Frank “Pancho” Martin, perhaps best known as the trainer of Sham, runner-up to Secretariat in the 1973 Kentucky and Preakness, but also led New York in wins for 10 straight years (1973-82). Martin's late father, Jose, trained three year-end champions and won the Grade 1 Forego at Saratoga in 1986 and 1987 with Groovy.

Only Jerkens, fellow Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas (1985-86), and future Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher (2011-12) have won the Ballerina in back-to-back years.

“It's always exciting when you win a big race, especially at Saratoga with so much tradition and so many special times growing up, watching my father with Groovy win back-to-back Foregos and my grandfather and all the success they had here for years,” Martin said. “It helps validate that the Martin name is still around. Unfortunately, they're not around anymore. I'm never going to be the trainer they were; they trained six champions between them. I'm not trying to be them, but I just like the fact that the name is still out there and hopefully they're looking down somewhat proud and we can keep it going.”

A multiple graded-stakes winner of more than $1 million in career purses, Come Dancing has raced just twice this year. She was 12th in her season debut, the Grade 1, 1 1/16-mile Apple Blossom on April 18 at Oaklawn Park when she was saddled by Lukas, and second as the favorite behind fellow Ballerina aspirant Victim of Love in the Grade 3, 6 ½-furlong Vagrancy June 27 at Belmont Park.

Come Dancing won the Grade 3 Distaff and Grade 2 Ruffian and was second in the Grade 1 Odgen Phipps heading into last year's Ballerina, and Martin said he has not seen a drop off in his stable star despite a lighter schedule largely due to the skewed racing schedule amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“She still has the enthusiasm. She was a little laid-back last year as a 5-year-old. She doesn't really get too hot and bothered, but she'll get a little bit excited if somebody goes by her galloping on the track or somebody goes inside of her. She's got those competitive juices,” Martin said. “I would say she's pretty similar to last year. She knows when it's game time.

“She can work in a minute, like she did the other day, or she can go a little too fast. She'll fool you. She went in in 57 and 4 before the Vagrancy. It just depends,” he added. “I just think she's in a good place right now, mentally and physically. I think as they get older the mental aspect is just as important as the conditioning aspect. You have to put a little bit more thought into it, as far as keeping them fresh mentally as well as physically.”

Hall of Famer Javier Castellano will ride Come Dancing from outside post 7.

Joel Politi's 2019 Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress will cut back to a sprint for the first time since last summer at Saratoga in an effort to regain her winning form. The 4-year-old Alternation filly captured the Grade 2 Azeri in front-running fashion on March 14 at Oaklawn Park, ran 11th in the Apple Blossom and fourth last out in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis on June 27 at Churchill Downs, contested at 1 1/8 miles.

“It was a strong effort that day in a race where she kind of just got run into the ground. I didn't think we did a very good job of kind of rating her speed,” trainer Tom Amoss said of the Fleur de Lis effort. “Having said that, she's recovered well and she's training well.”

Serengeti Empress set the pace and was game to the wire in a half-length loss to Covfefe in the 2019 Test at Saratoga. Covfefe would go on to win the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint and be named both Champion 3-Year-Old Filly and Champion Female Sprinter.

“The move to shorten up to seven-eighths has a lot to do with last summer at Saratoga. That was a really good seven-eighths race for her, so we feel that this might be something that we can use to our advantage,” Amoss said. “That was last year and it's this year now. A lot will be made of what Serengeti is right now compared to what she was last year at this time. That's a fair question. All I can tell you is that she is doing well and we're very comfortable with trying her at seven-eighths.”

Serengeti Empress tuned up for the Ballerina with a half-mile breeze in 46.93 seconds July 26 at Saratoga, the fastest of 74 horses. Luis Saez will ride from post 1.

“She's a really, really good work horse, so anything less than an attractive work pattern would be a cause for concern with her. She likes her job a lot,” Amoss said. “I think her overall weight as well as her brightness of coat are as good as I've seen it this year, so Saratoga definitely agrees with her.”

A Grade 1 winner at 2 and 3, Kaleem Shah Inc., Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith's Bellafina looks to extend that streak to her 4-year-old season in the Ballerina. Based in California with trainer Simon Callaghan, the Quality Road filly has raced three times in 2020, winning the Grade 3, six-furlong Desert Stormer on May 17 at Santa Anita. Third in last year's Grade 1 Test at Saratoga, Bellafina posted Grade 1 wins in the 2018 Del Mar Debutante and Chandelier and 2019 Santa Anita Oaks.

Jose Ortiz gets the call from post 4.

Tommy Town Thoroughbreds' Victim of Love upset the Vagrancy by 1 ¾ lengths at odds of 27-1 for her first career graded triumph and second in a stakes, following the 6 ½-furlong What a Summer on January 18 at Laurel Park to kick off her 4-year-old campaign. Based at Penn National with trainer Todd Beattie, she ran second in the Grade 3 Barbara Fritchie on February 15, also at Laurel. Jose Lezcano rides from post 3.

Beattie is approaching the Ballerina with a similar mindset as he had prior to the Vagrancy, giving an opportunity to a filly that's doing well.

“That's the way I'm looking at it, I'm taking a shot,” Beattie said. “She's going to obviously have to run her best race to get it done, but think there's a chance that she might be ready to run a good one. I feel pretty comfortable with how she's doing, thought everything was in line and it was perfect timing. We thought we'd take a swing.”

St. George Stable's homebred Letruska will make her New York debut in the Ballerina for trainer Fausto Gutierrez. A two-time Group 1 winner in Mexico, the 4-year-old Letruska beat males in the 1 ¼-mile Copa Invitacional del Caribe last December and last out won the one-mile Added Elegance on June 27, both at Gulfstream Park. In between, she traveled to Oaklawn Park for a 1 1/16-mile optional claiming allowance victory under Ricardo Santana Jr., who returns to ride from post 5.

“She won a tough allowance at Oaklawn Park after the layoff. The last race she had at Gulfstream, in my opinion, was spectacular. She ran very fast. She covered six furlongs in 1:08 and change,” Gutierrez said. “This was the reason I came here. I'm sure she is ready for this level of competition.”

Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey has won the Ballerina a record five times, and will send out Gainesway Stable and Andrew Rosen's Pink Sands. A maiden winner in 2018 at Saratoga, the 5-year-old Tapit mare captured the Grade 3, one-mile Rampart and Grade 2, seven-furlong Inside Information over the winter at Gulfstream Park then went unraced for five months before finishing fifth in the Grade 1, 1 1/16-mile Ogden Phipps on June 13 at Belmont Park.

Irad Ortiz, Jr. has the mount from post 6.

McGaughey's Ballerina wins came with Lass Trump in 1984, Cadillacing in 1988, Queena in 1991, Roamin Rachel in 1994 and Furlough in 1999.

Arindel homebred Cookie Dough, trained by Juan Alvarado, placed in five graded stakes before her triumph in the 1 1/16-mile Royal Delta on February 15 at Gulfstream Park. She has not started since fading to last after racing on or near the pace in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom April 18 at Oaklawn Park, but has fired three consecutive bullet workouts in preparation for her return, most recently going five furlongs in 57.77 seconds on July 24.

Fourth in an optional claimer last summer at Saratoga, Cookie Dough will be ridden by Hall of Famer John Velazquez from post 2.

The Ballerina is slated as Race 7 on Saturday's 12-race card, which offers a first post of noon Eastern.

Last Saturday, June 27, trainer Todd Beattie sent out his first graded stakes winner since 2014 when Victim of Love upset the Grade 3 Vagrancy at odds of 27-1. While her victory may have been a surprise to the bettors, Beattie has long believed that the 4-year-old daughter of Speightstown had the talent to play on the big stage.

“She's really just a hard-trying filly, that's the biggest thing you can take your hat off to her,” Beattie said. “She's a late foal (May 27), so she's been playing catch up a little bit, but her age isn't making such a difference right now. She's been steadily getting a little better, and I can see things where her maturity is really helping her.”

Usually, Beattie prefers to start his own runners as 2-year-olds, doing the groundwork himself and giving his wife, Amanda, a leg up for the babies' first rides. One of his most famous runners was Taris, whom he saddled for a nine-length triumph in the 2014 G2 Raven Run at Keeneland before selling her privately to Coolmore. The mare would later win the Grade 1 Distaff at Churchill Downs in 2016.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=436 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=437 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Conversely, Victim of Love is a homebred for Tom Stull's Tommy Town Thoroughbreds. The filly began her career in New Mexico, breaking broke her maiden in her third start by 11 3/4 lengths when conditioned by Henry Dominguez. She won the listed Island Fashion Stakes in her next start, in February of 2019, but after finishing off the board in her next two outings, Stull decided to make a change.

“I do a lot of work with Tommy Town, I'm kind of their outlet out here on the East Coast,” explained Beattie. “They wanted to send her here because there would be some more opportunities, and the competition wouldn't be quite as tough as in their California base.

“We've been figuring her out and what distance suits her. Her very best might be that middle distance, 6 1/2 to seven furlongs, and obviously the wet track didn't hurt her, but she can run on a dry track too.”

From his private barn at Penn National, Beattie slowly began teaching Victim of Love to get into her races a little earlier. She won an allowance race at Laurel in October, and two starts later captured the listed What A Summer Stakes at the Maryland oval.

In the Vagrancy coming off a three-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic, Victim of Love broke a bit slowly. She was sent up into the race, then took over at the head of the lane and pulled away to win by 1 3/4 lengths under jockey Jose Lezcano.

“The trainer [Todd Beattie] told me to break and try to keep her busy,” Lezcano said. “She broke a little bit behind, but with a tap on the shoulder, she jumped right there on the bridle. When I asked her, she really took off. My filly kept going the whole way around and never stopped. She gave me everything she had.”

The filly's success suggests she appreciates the quiet, laid-back atmosphere of Beattie's private barn at Penn National.

“I'm 100 percent country boy,” Beattie said. “I've never lived in the city, but I always felt blessed because I get to see it in my rearview mirror when I'm leaving. I live on a mountain and I have a small farm, about 15 minutes away from the racetrack, so I can train on the track and come and go as I please. A guy that really likes the countryside appreciates that kind of lifestyle.”

Born and raised in Antigo, Wisc., the same hometown as Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas, Beattie learned to appreciate Quarter Horses as well. He doesn't train them to race, however. Instead, he and his wife enjoy competing in cutting horse shows, and they use the Quarter Horses as ponies at the track to keep them fit during the week.

“The nice part about training horses at the track is that I always ride a pony and watch the horses train,” Beattie explained. “It works out good that I don't have to go work my cutting horses when it's real hot in the afternoons!”

The entire Beattie family is involved in the horse industry, as well. Of six children, five are full-time with horses, and the sixth enjoys riding cutting horses after her day job. Beattie's sister, Holley, is married to 2-year-old trainer Bryan Rice, and the couple founded Woodside Ranch in Florida. They've developed racehorses like millionaires Hollywood Wildcat and War Chant, and more recently Breeders' Cup Champion Storm the Court, among many others.

After living in Wisconsin during the winters for his entire childhood, Beattie was quick to follow his brothers and sisters to Pennsylvania for year-round racing. Like his family, he particularly enjoys the early stages of training, from the first ride through the first race on the track.

The trainer has saddled over 1,700 winners, but Victim of Love was just Beattie's eighth graded stakes victory. His best horse was millionaire and Grade 1 winner Fabulous Strike.

“I really like to watch the young horses progress, and we start right from scratch,” Beattie explained. “We'll have unbroke horses and I like to develop them and see them get to the next stage. In the past I've had 60-80 horses, and I ended up being a business manager rather than a horse trainer. I prefer to do the training myself, so I try to keep my numbers down within reason, so that way I can have a little bit of a life.”

Of course, coronavirus has made that life look quite a bit different over the past several months. Pennsylvania was one of the last states to get horse events started again, and Beattie is grateful to be able to resume more normal operations. He and his wife have been to three cutting horse shows in the past month, and they've started shipping horses around to run once again.

“Who would have imagined this would have happened in our lifetime?” Beattie said of the pandemic. “It's been really tough trying to hold on, and you're trying to manage your horses. Yeah, you're training them, but you don't have a target you're aiming for, so you try to maintain a little conditioning, but you don't want to tighten them down. Now we feel a little better about getting our horses ready.”

Tommy Town Thoroughbreds' Victim of Love, expertly handled by Jose Lezcano, used a prominent trip to upset Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Vagrancy, a 6 ½-furlong sprint for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

The Vagrancy was the first of four graded stakes on a loaded 11-race card that also includes the Grade 1, $250,000 Just a Game for fillies and mares going one mile on the Widener turf; the Grade 2, $150,000 True North, for 4-year-olds and up going 6 ½ furlongs; and the Grade 2, $250,000 New York at 1 ¼ miles on Belmont Park's inner turf.

Trained by Todd Beattie, two-time stakes winner Victim of Love headed into Saturday's test making just her second attempt in a graded event, having previously run second in the Grade 3 Runhappy Barbara Fritchie two starts back in February at Laurel Park.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Jakarta took command out of the gate as a heavy rain commenced at Belmont Park with Victim of Love, longest shot on the board at 27-1, urged into contention at her hip through an opening quarter mile in 22.47 seconds on the fast and harrowed main track.

Grade 1-winner Come Dancing, the 4-5 mutuel favorite, settled in fourth position in the early running as Jakarta continued to dictate the pace, posting a half-mile in 45.29 under constant pressure from Victim of Love.

Lezcano put Victim of Love to the lead late in the turn as Come Dancing launched a wide bid with Pacific Gale following suit. Come Dancing surged into contention but Victim of Love continued to find more as Hall of Fame rider Javier Castellano angled the favorite for an inside run to no avail. Confidently handled and much the best, Victim of Love made the grade by 1 ¾-lengths in a final time of 1:16.27.

Come Dancing held second by 4 ¼-lengths over Pacific Gale. Jakarta, Royal Charlotte and Chalon rounded out the order of finish. Mother Mother was scratched.

Lezcano said Victim of Love was engaged throughout.

“The trainer told me to break and try to keep her busy. She broke a little bit behind, but with a tap on the shoulder, she jumped right there on the bridle,” said Lezcano. “When I asked her, she really took off. My filly kept going the whole way around and never stopped. She gave me everything she had.”

Castellano, who guided Come Dancing to victory in the 2019 Grade 1 Ballerina at Saratoga, said he was pleased with his mare's effort.

“It was her second start of the year. I'm not disappointed. The horse on the lead was much the best today. I think that the track is playing a little bit to speed. The rain didn't bother her at all. I'm looking forward to a big race next time.”

Victim of Love, a $160,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, captured the Island Fashion at Sunland Park last year and the What A Summer in January at Laurel Park. Out of the Grade 2-winning mare Spacy Tracy, Victim of Love is a full-sister to Grade 2-winner Benner Island.

Bred in Kentucky by Daniel J. Burke, Victim of Love banked $55,000 in victory while improving her record to 15-5-2-2. She paid $56 for a $2 win ticket.

Live racing resumes Sunday with a nine-race card headlined by the $100,000 Bouwerie, a seven-furlong sprint for New York-bred sophomore fillies in Race 8 at 5:04 p.m. Eastern. First post is 1:15 p.m.
