Rick Williams, general manager of The Oaks Stud in Cambridge, New Zealand, confirmed to TDN AusNZ that The Oaks Stud has purchased U S Navy Flag (War Front) outright from Coolmore Stud.

“The deal was finalised on Friday, so we own him now. The timing has been perfect for us, and I hope it is a coup for the New Zealand industry,” said Williams.

U S Navy Flag's first Southern Hemisphere crop yielded 98 foals, 21 of which have hit the track resulting in six winners of seven races, four stakes performers and one stakes winner.

From U S Navy Flag's Northern Hemisphere crops, he has produced Ocean Vision (Ire), a four-time winner, including the Listed Prix de la Vallée d'Auge at Deauville and the Listed Prix de Pontarme at Longchamp. Ocean Vision was also placed in the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte at Chantilly, and Love Reigns (Ire) won two Listed races before running fourth in the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot.

Williams is pleased with the performance and feedback from the first crop of U S Navy Flag.

“Most of my social friends are horse trainers, so I get pretty accurate feedback on what they think of a horse, whether good or bad. “He seems to be throwing horses similar to himself. They cope with racing and keep improving. U S Navy Flag is not a big horse, but he's one of the best-moving horses you'll ever see.”

“We couldn't be happier right now. I'm more excited about the spring because many trainers I've spoken to have had trial winners by the stallion that haven't raced yet, and they've put them away for the spring. He's got plenty of unraced stock with high opinions on them to come through,” Williams told TDN AusNZ.

“Whether he'll be a top-notch stallion, time will tell, but the way he's going, he's not a bad stallion. Let's hope the success continues, and it's a good investment for us and the New Zealand breeding industry.”

Topping a Wesley Ward-trained exacta, Love Reigns got her 3-year-old campaign off on the right foot with a late-charging win in Friday's FanDuel Limestone S. over her preferred 5 1/2-furlong distance. Named 'TDN Rising Star' off a 9 3/4-length romp at first asking over this same track nearly a year ago, the daughter of U S Navy Flag then tried her hand across the pond at Royal Ascot, checking in fourth beaten three lengths in the G2 Queen Mary S. Back in the States and back in the winner's circle for Saratoga's Bolton Landing S. last August, Love Reigns ended her season with a distant finish against the boys in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Stuck behind rivals after a sharp break Friday, the filly was at least able to save ground as she beat only a handful of horses up the backstretch led by Accomplished Girl (Street Boss). Still boxed in as the field swung past the quarter pole, Love Reigns had to check sharply before tipping inside to regain her momentum. Under an expertly-timed ride by Joel Rosario, she dove through an opening between rivals with a sixteenth to run and charged up the fence to nail stablemate Lady Hollywood just before the wire as the 5-2 favorite.

“She's a special filly,” praised trainer Wesley Ward. “I've kind of been waiting for this to come out since her maiden win here. She likes Keeneland, she loved the course when she broke her maiden here a year ago, and we're just real, real happy it worked out. (Jockey) Joel (Rosario) is kind of my come-from-behind guy that I ride on horses that I like to do that with–which aren't many, but this being one. He's just a phenomenal rider. He gets them back there, gets them to relax. He had us a little worried there at the eighth pole, but thank God the seas parted and he came through and he won.”

Love Reigns has a pair of younger siblings–a 2-year-old half-sister by Kodiac (GB) and a yearling half-brother by Mehmas (Ire). Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of not returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Sunday's Observations features the return of 'TDN Rising Star' Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) as well as the daughter of G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Ballydoyle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

3.45 Naas, Hcp, €45,000, 3yo, 7fT
PADDINGTON (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) will be one of the key attractions if Naas's card evades the forecast heavy rain and gets the go-ahead, being Ballydoyle's chief representative in this Madrid Handicap won in 2016 when it was staged at The Curragh by the subsequent Irish 2000 Guineas hero Awtaad (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}). Labelled a 'TDN Rising Star' following his emphatic maiden win over this trip at The Curragh in October, the joint-second highest-priced lot at €420,000 at the 2021 Arqana October Sale is the pick of Ryan Moore over the stable's Londoner (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), a son of the G1 Prix de l'Abbaye heroine Gilt Edge Girl (GB) (Monsieur Bond {Ire}) who also impressed when taking his maiden at Dundalk in October.

4.55 Naas, Mdn, €16,000, 3yo, f, 8fT
RED RIDING HOOD (IRE) (Justify) accompanies stablemate Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) to Naas, as she did when they both travelled to Ascot in early September for their debuts. Not seen since finishing runner-up over this trip on that occasion, it may be significant that the daughter of the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine and 1000 Guineas runner-up Ballydoyle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) linked to Misty For Me (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and War Front's U S Navy Flag and Roly Poly is in the maiden won in the last two years by Galileo's subsequent Classic-winning sisters Empress Josephine (Ire) and Tuesday (Ire).

Off the back of a star-studded season, No Nay Never will stand for €175,000 in 2023, which represents a €50,000 rise, while his dual Group 1-winning son Blackbeard (Ire) will join him on the Coolmore roster next year at a price of €25,000.

No Nay Never has had an exceptional year. Older filly Alcohol Free (Ire) landed the G1 July Cup at Newmarket, but it has been his Coolmore-owned and Aidan O'Brien-trained juveniles that have set tongues wagging this term.

Like his father, Blackbeard landed the G1 Prix Morny in Deauville before doubling his tally at the highest level in the G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket.

While he was prematurely retired due to a training injury, Group 1 scorers Little Big Bear (Ire) and Meditate (Ire) sit at the head of the ante-post markets for the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas respectively.

Coolmore's director of sales, David O'Loughlin said, “No Nay Never has had an unbelievable year. The quality of the mares he got off the back of his success has really been shining through and, to have three individual Group 1-winning two-year-olds in the one year, he has caught the attention of a lot of people.

“It has been another big week for him with Meditate winning the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and she is now a leading fancy for the 1,000 Guineas. Little Big Bear is favourite for the 2,000 Guineas, so No Nay Never has a big chance for the first two Classics of the season. That means a lot for us because we are trying to win the Classics.”

Sioux Nation hails from the same sire line being a son of Scat Daddy, and enjoyed a terrific debut season at stud at Coolmore with 43 winners. He will have his fee increased from €10,000 to 17,500 next year. Blackbeard is being backed to make a similar splash in his debut season by O'Loughlin.

He said, “To get a horse like Blackbeard on the roster is hugely exciting as well. Breeders love fast horses and he proved himself of the highest quality this season and was reminiscent of his father when winning the G1 Prix Morny is some style before following up in the G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket. That was the icing on the cake of another big season.

“Blackbeard is very like his father-the same colour, shape and he has the movement. Everything a breeder wants, he has. He's also out of a very fast mare who Eddie Lynam trained [Muirin (Ire) (Born To Sea {Ire})] so I think a lot of people will be keen to use him.”

O'Loughlin added, “Commercially, what is driving the market is international appeal. When the international market zones in on a particular sire line, it puts a lot of value on that, much more than the domestic market can. No Nay Never is a good example of that as he has international appeal.

“Take Justify as another example, he has had two Group winners in Europe and three stakes winners in America. It's obvious that he is working both sides of the Atlantic-he has the dirt horses and horses who can do it in Europe as well. For breeders, it will help when they use Arizona, Blackbeard and Sioux Nation because they all hail from that exceptional Scat Daddy line. It's all the one line.”

Like Sioux Nation, Coolmore's Saxon Warrior (Jpn) made a big impression with his first crop of runners. As well as having the highly-touted Auguste Rodin (Ire) to look forward to this season, Saxon Warrior came up trumps with Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Victoria Road (Ire), one of 21 international winners in his first season.

O'Loughlin said, “Saxon Warrior had an exceptional year. Again, he's a horse with international appeal being a son of Deep Impact (Jpn), who was the best horse to stand in Japan. Auguste Rodin is a very special horse and Victoria Road crowned a remarkable year with his victory in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf.

“It's remarkable because Saxon Warrior wasn't the most precocious of horses and, for him to be getting all of these top-class two-year-olds is a big statement. He has some very good two-year-olds and who's to say that Greenland (Ire) won't be the best of them all. I know that a lot of people think he is a high-class horse to look forward to next year. Some big breeders have latched on to him after his debut season and I even sold a nomination to him out here in Keeneland the other day. They think the horse is great value at €35,000.”

Wootton Bassett will stand for €150,000, St Mark's Basilica's 2023 fee is €65,000, and Camelot (GB) is at €60,000. Churchill (Ire), the sire of dual Group 1 winner Vadeni (Fr), has had his fee increased to €30,000, Starspangledbanner (Aus) will stand for €50,000, Australia (GB) and Sottsass (Fr) for €25,000 and Ten Sovereigns (Ire) and Gleneagles (Ire) for €17,500.

Footstepsinthesand, Circus Maximus, Calyx and US Navy Flag are set at €10,000, Arizona (Ire) is €5,000 and Gustav Klimt (Ire) will be available at €4,000.

The first major yearling sale of the autumn in Britain or Ireland, the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale provided entertainment from the beginning to the end, but most importantly, boasted impressive figures. Brian Sheerin was in attendance and discusses the major talking points from the sale.

Figures on the up

The team at Goffs UK could hardly have wished for a better start to the Premier Yearling Sale. The day one figures were off the charts. Of the 218 lots offered on Tuesday, 199 were sold, representing a clearance rate of 91%.

The aggregate was up 28% to £8,954,500, the average rose 15% to £44,997 and the median climbed 27% to £38,000.

There were noticeably less people around the sales complex at Doncaster on day two. While the figures failed to match what took place on Tuesday, there were some impressive numbers recorded on Wednesday, with an 87% clearance rate on a day where the aggregate climbed 11% to £7,003,000.

The average on Wednesday went up 0.5% while the median fell by 4% to £32,000. That came despite the fact that there was some late drama in the ring with three of the last seven lots making six figures.

All told, the sale went well. Of the 406 yearlings catalogued, 363 were sold, translating to a clearance rate of 89%. The aggregate was up 20% to £15,987,500 while the average was up 8% and the median rose by 9%.

Big Results From Small Numbers For Fitzgerald

Alice Fitzgerald knows what she is doing. It was at the Premier Yearling Sale in 2021 when Fitzgerald sold her homebred Basil Martini (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}} out of 10,000gns purchase Under Offer (Bated Breath (GB) to MV Magnier for £160,000.

Fast forward 12 months and Fitzgerald, who never brings more than one or two to the sales, bagged another big pay-day by selling her Kodiac (GB) colt out of Night Queen (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) to Manor House Farm for £160,000.

What's even more impressive about Fitzgerald? This isn't even her day job.

John and Jess Dance Stock Up

Given John and Jess Dance bought six-time Group 1 winner Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) at this sale in 2016, it's only natural that the owners would have an affinity towards Doncaster, which was evident in the results.

Under Manor House Stables, they signed for nine different yearlings at a total of £837,000, which was only bettered by the £1,162,000 that Peter and Ross Doyle spent across the two days on a whopping 17 different horses.

However, of the top 10 spenders at the Premier Yearling Sale, nobody boasted a better average than John and Jess Dance.

The couple spent an average of £93,000 on their nine lots, illustrating that they are seeking quality over quantity more so than ever before.

High Praise From Doyle

Ross Doyle is renowned for being one of the best judges in the game. Along with his father Peter, he has sourced Mehmas, Barney Roy, Limato, Japan, Fairyland, Magna Grecia, Olympic Glory and much more.

Therefore, when he praised Goffs for attracting the best bunch of yearlings that he has seen for some time, it reflected well on the quality of the sale.

Doyle signed for two of the top lots in the sale, a colt by New Bay (GB) [211] for £200,000 on day one, and a lovely Dark Angel (Ire) colt [251] the following day for the same figure.

Grangemore signed for the Dark Angel colt at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sales for 40,000gns and the sale to the Doyles, who didn't reveal where the horse would be trained, secured a tidy pinhooking profit. The New Bay colt will be trained by Richard Hannon.

Two Top-Notch Pinhooks

There were a number of good pinhooks over the course of the sale but two stood out. The first was that of lot 21, a gorgeous Ten Sovereigns (Ire) filly that Jamie Railton bought for €26,000 off Ballybin Stud at the November Foal Sales at Goffs last year before selling to Richard Hughes for a cool £110,000 on Tuesday.

The second was an even greater piece of inspiration as Violet Hesketh and Mimi Wadham, who run WH Bloodstock, and transformed lot 171 from a €38,000 purchase back in February to a £120,000 yearling just six months later.

A colt by Kuroshio (Aus), lot 171 was tipped to do well after a number of shrewd judges got him vetted and, in the end, he was knocked down to Mark McStay and it's understood the colt will be sent to Fozzy Stack to be trained.

Kuroshio Holding His Own

Kuroshio has been around the world and back but this year represented the classy Australian's first crop of runners since he took up residency at Starfield Stud in 2020. After a slow start to the season, Dontspoilasale (Ire) has come along and won for the stallion in Ireland, and looks potentially progressive, while Jessica Harrington's Panic Alarm (Ire) should be winning races for the stallion when he gets softer ground conditions.

All told, anyone who has backed Kuroshio will be a lot happier now than ever before as last week's figures were respectable. Away from the headline-maker, lot 171, the Baroda Stud-drafted filly [lot 258] also secured a solid sale for the stallion, and changed hands to join John and Jess Dance for £48,000. All four yearlings by the stallion were sold.

Force Behind Highclere Stallion

Some will argue that Land Force (Ire) is riding the crest of a No Nay Never wave, and that may have been an entirely plausible summation of the situation had his yearlings not been so impressive in the flesh.

Top judges Clive Cox-who went to £85,000 to secure lot 71-and Oliver St Lawrence bought progeny by the stallion. Some of the best in the breeze-up business, Katie Walsh, Longways Stables and Con Marnane, also rowed in behind Land Force this week.

Jake Warren even tipped the Highclere-based stallion for first-season sire honours and, while there is a lot of water to pass under that particular bridge, the early signs are promising for anyone with a Land Force in their stable.

Of the 17 offered this week, 14 were sold at an aggregate of £510,000, which averaged out at £36,429.

Noteworthy Buyers

A number of top agents, trainers and breeze-up buyers relayed how footfall had increased at the sale and, as a result, it was going to be even harder to smoke out a bargain.

Well, buyers also had to contend with major competition from afar as Wesley Ward also got in on the action, signing for lot 200, a Lynn Lodge-consigned £82,000 daughter of US Navy Flag.

Ward is clearly a fan of the stallion and why wouldn't he be? The Patrick Grogan-bred Love Reigns (Ire), whose only defeat in three starts for the American-based trainer, came when she finished fourth in the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot. Time will tell if Ward has bagged himself another Royal Ascot filly.

It should be said that, for all that Eddie O'Leary has a host of international clients, he still made time for his neighbour at Goffs. At one point in the afternoon on Wednesday, Nick Nugent on the rostrum announced, 'from one corner of Mullingar to the other,' when Roger O'Callaghan of Tall-Ho purchased a Mehmas colt [lot 349] for £45,000 off his fellow Westmeath native.

O'Leary's Lynn Lodge Stud ended proceedings with 11 yearlings sold for £677,000 at an average of £61,545, making the operation the fifth most successful across the two days.

Tally-Ho Dominate

It was an excellent sale for Tally-Ho. Not only was the stud responsible for the top lot, the Blandford Bloodstock-bought Night Of Thunder (Ire) filly [lot 278] out of five-time winner and listed-placed Thiswaycadeaux (Thewayyouare), but they also ended proceedings as the leading consignors with 24 yearlings making £1,544,000 in total.

That was needed, according to Roger O'Callaghan, who revealed that there were 60 more yearlings standing in the field at home in Westmeath, with 40 needing to be broken in and prepared for the breeze-ups.

Away from the excellent results posted by their own stock, Tally-Ho will have been delighted by how all the progeny of their resident stallions were received with yearlings by Kodiac, Cotai Glory, Kessaar, Galileo Gold, Mehmas and young sire Inns Of Court doing well.

Night Of Thunder Stars

But the star of the show, without question, was Darley's Night Of Thunder. Along with Tally-Ho's sales-topping filly, the Mountarmstrong Stud-drafted Night Of Thunder [170] colt out of Pious Alexander, which ended day one on top at £230,000, ensured it was a memorable sale for the sire.

Mark McStay landed the day one leader, after which, the leading agent labelled Night Of Thunder, the sire of last week's spellbinding G1 Nunthorpe S. winner Highfield Princess (Fr), as a solid source of top-class talent.

Classy Siblings On Show

Some pedigrees leapt off the page. The Galileo Gold half-brother [280] to Nunthorpe runner-up The Platinum Queen (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}) made £170,000 to join Richard Spencer, the Ulysses (Ire) half-brother [213] to Coventry S. winner Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) was knocked down to Dance Thoroughbreds for £150,000 and Whitsbury Manor's Havana Grey (GB) half-sister to Sandy Lane S. scorer El Caballo (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) was all the rage at £230,000 with Jack Warren of Highclere doing the buying.

Havana Grey Shines

Of the 22 horses offered by Havana Grey, all bar one were sold for a total of £1,089,000, averaging at £51,857. Whitsbury's Ed Harper revealed that his performance is exceeding the wildest dreams but, with nine individual black-type horses in his first crop, perhaps buyers were cottoning on to the fact that they have been witnessing something special.

Soldier's Answers The Call

This game is all about looking towards the future and the early signs are that Joe Foley has another real one at Ballyhane Stud in Soldier's Call (GB).

The man knows how to launch a stallion and must have taken great credit about how Soldier's Call cleared £563,000 from 13 yearlings sold at an average of £43,308.

What's more, Foley was prepared to put his money where his mouth is, and bought the top lot [212] by the sire for £105,000 off Tinnakill House Stud for Steve Parkin.

1.25 Curragh, Mdn, €17,000, 2yo, 8fT
A son of the 1000 Guineas and Irish 1000 Guineas runner-up Lightning Thunder (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}), the 650,000gns Book 1 graduate is joined by fellow newcomer Covent Garden (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a full-brother to Johannes Vermeer (Ire) and Wembley (Ire), and the Ryan Moore-ridden Hiawatha (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), the full-brother to Luxembourg (Ire) who has the benefit of two runs.

2.00 Curragh, Mdn, €16,500, 2yo, 7fT
CANUTE (Quality Road) is the second foal out of the G1 Falmouth S., G1 Matron S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. heroine Alice Springs (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and is one of another Ballydoyle trio alongside Ryan Moore's pick Continuous (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), a relative of Saxon Warrior (Jpn), and Charles Bianconi (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), a 320,000gns Book 1 half-brother to Dame Malliot (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) who carries the Evie Stockwell silks. They are met by Qatar Racing's fellow newcomer High Court Judge (Kitten's Joy), a Johnny Murtagh-trained son of the GII Lake Placid S. and GII Churchill Distaff Turf Mile winner Proctor's Ledge (Ghostzapper).

Stonestreet Stables' Love Reigns (Ire) (U S Navy Flag) breezed a half-mile in :48.66 seconds Friday over the Oklahoma training turf in preparation for the 5 1/2-furlong Bolton Landing S. Aug. 21 at Saratoga. Trained by Wesley Ward graduated by 9 3/4-lengths in her April debut sprinting 5 1/2-furlongs over the Keeneland turf ahead of a close fourth last out in the G2 Queen Mary S. June 15 at Royal Ascot. Love Reigns lost some time after the Queen Mary due to illness but has now breezed four times over the Oklahoma training turf.

“She's doing great,” Ward said. “She's had no hiccups since Ascot and we're looking forward to getting her back. She's been up at Saratoga and had several breezes on the grass, including today, and she's ready to go.”

Stablemate No Kay Never (No Nay Never), also owned by Barbara Banke's Stonestreet Stables, is nominated to both the Bolton Landing and the Aug. 19 Skidmore S., a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint against the boys. No Kay Never was an impressive maiden winner at Horseshoe Indianapolis May 30, but Ward said he may try to separate the fillies.

“We'll look at both races. She'll breeze Sunday on the grass,” Ward said. “Barbara owns them both. We may go against the boys. We'll have a little further discussion.”

Lael Stables' MGSW Arrest Me Red (Pioneerof the Nile) and Hat Creek Racing's Illegal Smile (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) also worked five-eighths in 1:00.94 Friday over the Oklahoma training turf. Arrest Me Red is targeting the GII Turf Sprint Sept. 10 at Kentucky Downs, while Illegal Smile is pointed to the Aug. 20 Smart N Fancy S. at Saratoga. Arrest Me Red, winner of last year's GIII Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational and GII Turf Sprint in May, was a close second last out in the GI Jaipur S. at Belmont June 11.

“He got a beautiful trip following us around there and then it kind of parted where he got a ground saving trip and got out. He was the best horse on the day,” Ward said.

Ward indicated Andrew Farm and For the People Racing's No Nay Hudson (No Nay Never) will make his turf debut in the Skidmore. The $190,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase graduated on debut in April in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Keeneland prior to a fourth-place effort in Belmont's Tremont S. in June.

Ocean Vision became the first stakes winner for his three-time Group 1-winning sire (by War Front) with a rallying victory in the Listed Prix de la Valley d'Auge at Deauville on Saturday. A winner at first asking at Dundalk in April, the bay was fourth in his next two starts including the May 21 G3 Marble Hill S. at the Curragh to subsequent Group 2 winner Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never).

One of the longer shots on the board, the Tim Donworth trainee raced near the tail of the field down the straight until half-way. Shifted out, he began to edge past rivals up the extreme outside, until just pipping the group-placed Vicious Harry at the line. His Donworth-trained stablemate Kokachin was just touched off for second in a blanket finish.

“Jim Ryan called me and told me he had a horse for me that he thought would be better suited by the ground in France,” explained trainer Tim Donworth. “That was two months ago and ever since he arrived I had this race in mind for him. I had worked him recently with the filly [Kokachin] and I felt they both had a good chance of getting a share of the money. He is a horse that's slow at the start, but capable of finding more and more in the latter stages providing there is a good pace. That is what I said to Maxime [Guyon] and he rode a great race. I have no words, it's pure magic, my first listed race for my first Deauville meeting and my parents are here. We will see what could be next, the filly seems to be on her best distance, but the colt might go further.”

The third winner of eight foals, Ocean Vision is the first offspring of the listed-placed Balaagha to earn black-type with Saturday's victory. From the extended family of Grade I winners Echo Zulu (Gun Runner), Echo Town (Speightstown) and Engine One (Our Michael), she has a yearling colt by El Kabeir still to come. VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

3rd-Parx Racing, $47,208, Msw, 4-26, 2yo, 2f, :23.27, ft, 1 length.
FERRARI KID (c, 2, Goldencents–Catch the Flag, by A.P. Indy) won this baby sprint at first asking, but that might not be the biggest update to his pedigree in the next week as his half-sister produced 'TDN Rising Star' Messier (Empire Maker), who is set to break from post six in Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby. Ferrari Kid was a $100,000 buy at OBS March by Richard Malouf after working in :21 1/5. Trained by Scott Lake for this Quarter Horse-like debut, the bay shot to the lead to win by a driving length under a vigorous ride. His unraced dam is out of Canadian champion Catch the Ring (Seeking the Gold). Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

2nd-Keeneland, $51,276, Msw, 4-29, 2yo, f, 5 1/2fT, 1:02.33, fm, 9 3/4 lengths.
Debuts don't come much more impressively than the unveiling of LOVE REIGNS (IRE) (f, 2, U S Navy Flag–Humble And Proud {Ire}, by Pivotal {GB}), who motored to the front and dared the others to catch her. With an efficient stride that hinted at the ability to do much more if asked, the bay–the third winner for her MG1SW freshman sire (by War Front)–was a no-brainer 'TDN Rising Star' after posting a 9 3/4-length victory. Love Reigns topped an Irish-bred, Wesley Ward-trained exacta, as his Rivka (Ire) (No Nay Never) was the runner-up. In third was Delight (Mendelssohn), who closed from last to overcome a rough and intimidating trip for the show. The Jonathan Thomas pupil was a $400,000 OBS March purchase by Augustin Stable after a :10 1/5 work. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

5th-Keeneland, $100,000, Msw, 4-29, 3yo, 6 1/2f, 1:17.93, ft, 1 1/2 lengths.
DOMINICAN PIONEER (c, 3, Pioneerof the Nile–Heatherdoesntbluff, by Old Trieste) donned cap and gown to become the third consecutive 'Insighted' horse to win. Always part of the early fray, the dark bay took command at the sixteenth pole and pulled clear late to win with authority. The R T Racing Stable colorbearer helped push trainer Wesley Ward to his sixth Keeneland Spring Meet title. The winner, a $325,000 Keeneland September purchase, is a half to GISW Killer Graces (Congaree) and to MGSW Chocolate Ride (Candy Ride {Arg}). Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

4th-Belmont, $90,000, Msw, 5-1, 3yo/up, f/m, 1 1/16mT, 1:42.51, fm, neck.
Christophe Clement's CANISY (f, 3, Point of Entry–Soother, by Rahy) played spoiler to featured Contemporary Art (Dubawi {Ire}) and Sahlabiya (Medaglia d'Oro). The trio of debuters all raced closely together in midpack, took varying paths to the front, and emerged from the fray with only each other as valid threats. In the end, it was Canisy by a neck over Contemporary Art, who had a neck on Sahlabiya. The winner campaigns for Blue Devil Racing Stable and is a half to MSW, GSP, and Saratoga course record setter Carotari (Artie Schiller). The runner-up is a Bobby Flay homebred and the first foal out of GSW and $1.6-million Fasig-Tipton November purchase Cover Song (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). The mare is out of European champion Misty For Me (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), making her a half to European champion U S Navy Flag (War Front), sire of the above-mentioned 'TDN Rising Star' Love Reigns, and to British MG1SW and 'TDN Rising Star' Roly Poly (War Front). Trifecta bookend Sahlabiya was a $1.6-million purchase at Keeneland September for Shadwell Stable. Half-brother and 'TDN Rising Star' Sergei Prokofiev (Scat Daddy) brought $1.1 million at the same sale three years earlier and is a graded winner in England. The top three all ran extremely well on debut against a more seasoned field, proved they were each up for a fight, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see any or all of them do bigger things down the line. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.
