Happy Blue Monday, if that's not a contradiction in terms. Some of us may feel that the whole of January is utterly foul, but someone, somewhere, once decided that the third Monday of this month was the most depressing day of the year, so here we are.

Fear not, however, because if you need a little pick-me-up on this dark day then you could do worse than follow the Twitter account of trainer Fergal O'Brien (@OBMRacing), head of the most upwardly mobile National Hunt stable in Britain, which is guaranteed to deliver daily something between a belly laugh and a small chortle, and often both. Considering the high frequency of winners emanating from O'Brien's stable (he is currently ahead of the multiple champion Paul Nicholls in this regard and was the first of his colleagues to breach the 100-winner mark this season), one might very well wonder how the trainer finds so much time to tweet. The answer is that he doesn't.

Like a number of trainers, O'Brien outsources his social media, and those familiar with the account may assume that he employs a full-time comedian to manage his online presence, but in fact he doesn't employ anyone. The man behind the account is Dr Simon Gillson (@DrSimonCMP), who co-founded the private general practice company Concierge Medical in 2013 and tweets for fun, which has in turn brought plenty of fun to others. That he is based close to Cleeve Hill allows 'Dr Simon', as he's known in racing circles, to indulge his passion for the jumps at Cheltenham, his local racecourse, and at O'Brien's nearby yard of Ravenswell.

“We have a private medical practice in the Cotswolds, an old-fashioned family doctor home-visiting service, and the first person that ever signed up to that back in late 2013 was one of Ferg's owners,” Gillson explains. “I didn't know him at the time but towards the end of 2014, I went to the owners' and trainers' bar with him in Cheltenham. That's when I met Ferg and, like any good trainer, within four weeks of that he had encouraged me to buy a share in a racehorse.”

He continues, “Both my grandads liked to bet, and then one of them particularly used to go racing, so when I was growing up in Yorkshire, you could get to about nine or 10 courses within an hour and a half. During summer holidays we spent a lot of time Flat racing, which at the time was great, but then that morphed into me being more of a National Hunt fan.”

I've had diets that have lasted longer than Davy's retirement

Actually that's probably not true but great to see him back https://t.co/US9oSrpMAm

— O'Brien-McPherson Racing (@OBMRacing) January 12, 2023

'Racing Twitter' really took off about a decade ago and during that time there have been some good, bad and downright ugly exchanges on the social networking site.

Jockeys, especially, and some trainers come in for plenty of stick, which can often be deeply unpleasant, but Twitter has also become a vital news and promotional source for the industry, as well as a huge amount of amusement.

Those trainers and jockeys who have stuck with the platform can use it to their advantage while giving racing fans some great behind-the-scenes insight, though there has been a trend for 'managed' social media accounts, which lose something in their inauthenticity. That is certainly not the case for O'Brien, thanks to the wacky humour of Gillson, whose wry daily observations on all manner of subjects from the sporting to baking to the political are a breath of fresh air. He also doesn't neglect his real-life position (IRL, as the kids like to say) as a doctor to put across the more serious message of mental health issues while avoiding the soppy memes that pop up around this important subject.

“I think, with my doctor head on, we have a platform now which has helped people,” he says. “Combine that with the horses, and we're able to help people. Even if that's just a few that come to the yard and feel so much better about it, then that's obviously no skin off our noses at all. And the thought that we've made someone's day a bit better is brilliant. And if they want to come back then that's fine as well, because there is clearly a therapeutic effect to horses for some people and we're very happy to share that with anybody.

“I was doing the social media for my medical practice, and it's a very different environment doing medical-related tweets. It's not exactly a jokey thing. And then I realised that nobody was really doing any social media for the yard, which seemed such a shame for someone with Ferg's size of personality not to be getting some of that out across into social media. So that's where it started.”

Gillson continues, “The whole point to it really was that I felt quite lucky when I took that share [in a horse] and then got up to the yard to see things that I'd never seen as a racegoer. It opened my eyes to how much goes on behind the scenes. There are so many people involved. It's funny, it's hard work, it's heartbreaking at times. And actually I felt that that's the sort of stuff that people should be seeing. And yeah, I think my original thought process was that I'd like to be able to tweet what I'd like to see as a race fan. And that's where we were aiming from. I think some of the jokes and things came in later.

As we've noted, at the moment it's difficult to believe that 2023 is going to be any better than recent years

If you're struggling with your mental health and think that a trip to see our horses would help, the invite to Ravenswell Farm and Martins Hill remains
#ItsOkNotToBeOk pic.twitter.com/1ywPVBezFp

— O'Brien-McPherson Racing (@OBMRacing) December 31, 2022

“There were a lot were lot of accounts run by trainers or people within the stable, which obviously knew a huge amount of stuff about the horses and racing but weren't conveying it that brilliantly. Or there were some obviously PR-led ones which were beautiful but didn't give you a huge amount of insight into what was actually going on. And the aim was to try and get somewhere in between the two. I did wonder early on in this whether people would get fed up.”

In fact, the opposite has happened, and in the seven years that Gillson has been tweeting for O'Brien, the stable's account has accrued 55,500 followers, and counting. On occasion, followers will suggest to the trainer that the unofficial social media manager needs a pay rise.

“He'll say 'you can have a hundred per cent raise', because he's paying me nothing,” says the doctor with a laugh.

With some of his tweets, his wry humour has sailed a bit close to the wind and the Twitter overlords have suspended the account on occasion.

He adds, “The most embarrassing one I got banned for was Covid misinformation because I made what was very obviously a joke based on a professor who was on TV a lot at the start of the pandemic who kept saying that everything will be all right.”

As we all know, not everything is all right all of the time. We all need a break from the norm sometimes, and for people who love racing but do not have the level of access of the sport's daily practitioners, social media has been invaluable in transporting people virtually, or sometimes in the case of O'Brien's open-door policy, actually to the heart of the action. Gillson is not immune to its benefits either.

“I enjoy doing it and it's a welcome release from my day job,” he says. “Don't get me wrong, I have worked in much more stressful environments, but still it's nice to have something which is completely different.”

The death of Medina Spirit (Protonico) following a workout Monday at Santa Anita has resulted in a predictable backlash, with at least two media outlets calling for the sport to be banned and readers of some of the nation's most prominent newspapers posting numerous vitriolic comments online.

Here is a sampling of what has been written and said about horse racing following Monday's shocking news:

The New York Post led the charge with Maureen Callahan writing a column with the headline “Medina Spirit's shocking death is yet another reason we should end horse racing.”

“Can you imagine any sport in which human athletes routinely died on the field, in competition, and we simply removed the bodies and kept going? Or one in which aged-out players weren't retired but sent to the slaughterhouse, as about 13,000 Thoroughbreds are annually?” Callahan writes.

She concludes: “The circus is dead. Dogfighting is almost completely eradicated. What will it take for us to save the racehorse?”

Writing for the website Deadspin, Sam Fels authored a story with the headline “Horse racing should be put out of its misery.”

The stories ran some 21 months after the Washington Post published an editorial in March, 2020 calling for the sport to be banned. “No other accepted sport exploits defenseless animals as gambling chips,” the editorial read. “No other accepted sport tolerates the cruelties that routinely result in the injury and death of these magnificent animals. The rot in horse racing goes deep. It is a sport that has outlived its time.”

The editorial appeared shortly after trainers Jason Servis, Jorge Navarro and 25 others were indicted for allegedly taking part in a scheme to dope horses with performance-enhancing drugs.

The coverage in the Washington Post, which has been highly critical of the sport, of Medina Spirit's death was straightforward, but the story evoked a strong response from readers. As of Tuesday afternoon, 616 comments on the story were posted online, and the overwhelming majority of them were unforgiving toward a sport that is clearly dealing with serious public perception problems.

“Horse racing is not a legitimate sport any more than cock fighting or dog fighting is. Just put an end to this,” wrote Avian_Donn.

“Horse racing is as evil as bullfighting,” reader Turqoises wrote.

There were a few favorable comments.

“These comments are ridiculous,” Velvet2 wrote. “Most likely he either had an aortic rupture (the wobbling before he collapsed points to this) or he had a faulty heart valve that stressed his heart, leading it to enlarge and beat irregularly, and then just stop (what seems to have happened to Swale). Neither of these possibilities have anything to do with man-made abuse.”

The story in the New York Times, another media outlet whose coverage of the sport has been overwhelmingly negative, elicited 170 comments.

“It's so sad what trainers and owners do to these beautiful horses to make money from them,” read a post from Ms. Pea. “It's no secret that long-term use of steroids can damage the heart. This whole 'sport' should be banned. It's despicable.”

Leo Moon wrote: “This young horse is dead because he was abused and drugged to make humans rich and satisfy their need for entertainment. It is despicable that this continues in this day and time. This was 100% preventable. We need to go after the Kentucky Derby the way the circus protesters have gone after Ringling Brothers.”

There were 132 comments attached to the Wall Street Journal's coverage of Medina Spirit's death. The Journal attracts a more conservative audience than the Washington Post and the New York Times, so it was no surprise that the comments were, generally less harsh. “I can't believe what I'm reading here,” reader Micheal Trian posted. “I can't believe how 'woke' we have become. I can't believe the Left, using their wacky liberals, has destroyed The Sport of Kings.”

But plenty of Journal readers took the sport to task.

“Inhumane sport… needs to be banned,” wrote srikanth iyer. “The enormous amount of money spent to sustain this ludicrous business can be better spent elsewhere.”

Les Utley wrote: “WHEN is this going to stop? How many horses have to die at Santa Anita and at other tracks before something is done? Drugging, overdosing and pushing these horses beyond their bodily limits is sickening and immoral–all for the amusement of the elites and the gamblers. Despicable.”

Many of the comments posted on Twitter were from horse racing insiders, but several touched upon the reaction of the general public.

“The @TODAYshow posted an article on Medina Spirit & within 30 minutes had 161 comments” wrote Leah Alessandroni. “I read them all. 160 are anti-racing. 1 was pro. That's just a tiny snapshot, the same responses are happening all over social media. TB industry needs to decide if it wants to live or die.”

“As expected, Medina Spirit's death made the national, nightly news,” read a tweet from WelbourneStud. “Who else out there is already fielding a bunch of texts/social media messages from non-horse racing friends asking what is going on with BB, Santa Anita, and horse racing?”

Nearly a year after permanently disabling comments on The Paulick Report, the comments section is back! Well, sort of. We can't fire up story comments again. The number of hours our staff was collectively losing in moderation (which, despite automation tools, often failed to remove libelous or trolly comments) was too great, and the few bad actors out there made it too labor-intensive to continue, even as we tried many different systems to combat them. The good news is, we are bringing back reader voices here on the Paulick Report with this new feature.

The issue was that the 2-year-old colt was running as a non-wagering interest, for purse money only, since he had been prematurely scratched by the Breeders' Cup veterinary team due to a starting gate incident.

Trainer Will VanMeter, 37, is stepping away from training Thoroughbreds after six years with his license, according to a post he made on Twitter.

“The hammer falling after the sale of Edgemont Road also signified the ending of a wonderful chapter in myself and Kristin's lives,” Vanmeter wrote, referred to his wife. “We sadly will be removing our shingle from Barn 62 on Rice Road after eight rewarding years conditioning Thoroughbreds.”

Stakes-placed Edgemont Road sold at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale on Nov. 17, hammering for $275,000 to Eddie Kenneally, agent for William Werner.

VanMeter, the son of well-known consignor and former practicing veterinarian Tom VanMeter, saddled a total of 64 winners from 527 starters with earnings of more than $3.3 million.

“Thank you to all the men and women that have woken 365 days a year before the sunrise to work in our shed,” VanMeter wrote. “In particular: Kristin VanMeter, Headley VanMeter, and Sarah Hamilton for being the bedrock of our stable. They helped build an atmosphere of professionalism and attention to detail that has been a pleasure to work within.”

VanMeter also thanked mentors D. Wayne Lukas, Sebastian Nicholl, and Tom Voss, as well as John Ed and Isabel Anthony, and owners Dr. Thomas VanMeter, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Ligon, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fletcher, Mr. Dennis Park, Mr. and Mrs. John Mayer, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Allor, Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay LaRoche.

Karl Broberg is convinced his Twitter account is to blame for him not being able to stable at Remington Park in Oklahoma City, Okla.

“They have exercised their private property rights to deny me stalls and they really won't give me a straight answer as to why,” Broberg said of Remington Park management. “It's because of my social media nonsense when I spoke horribly of the way it was managed. I never said anything on there that was that offensive and I sure didn't say anything that wasn't true.”

Broberg took to Twitter to express his frustration when Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, shut down in July after a racing office employee tested positive for COVID-19 and there was little communication between track management and horsemen about when racing might resume.

Since I love and appreciate all the tracks I run at and don't want to incite their wrath I will merely state the obvious one in particular isn't qualified to operate a lemonade stand on a 118 degree day in Phoenix Arizona. pic.twitter.com/WQri4r60Rz

Now I get to go collect all my side bets that there was NO chance we running tomorrow contrary to the prevailing wisdom. pic.twitter.com/TwuNzfn5rx

Both Lone Star Park and Remington Park are owned by the Chickasaw Nation's Global Gaming Solutions.

Broberg has also criticized the horsemen's organization at Remington Park, the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma, that he referred to as “the whiniest bunch of (deleted) in the world.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“I'm a little outspoken,” said Broberg, a former advertising executive who has been the leading North American trainer by wins from 2014-'19 and indirectly oversees several strings from his Dallas-area home. “I'm seldom there. My crew is good and quiet. We try to do it the right way. To the best of my knowledge I'm the only guy who's ever been ruled off who has never been suspended. I'm coming up on 4,000 career wins without one suspension.”

Remington had excluded Broberg in 2013 after The Jockey Club suspended his privileges for having three medication violations in 2011 and one additional violation in 2012. When he fought the Remington ban in court, the judge's ruling in favor of the racetrack exclusion said the Texas Racing Commission had previously caught a vet going into a stall in Broberg's barn carrying four loaded syringes. The vet was charged but Broberg was not.

Broberg is allowed to enter horses at Remington and he said he is taking 18 horses to a training center 15 miles from the track.

“I'm allowed to haul in to the receiving barn,” he said. “But the way we run our program – school in the paddock, stand in the gate – it becomes a logistical nightmare.”

Last year, Broberg won 57 races from 289 starters at the Oklahoma City track.

“Remington has always been such an integral part of my life, even before I started training,” said Broberg, who took out his trainer's license in 2009. “It sucks. It's so unfortunate. This is costing them money, a lot of starts. The first two days they had full entries, but the next two days were horrible.”

With about 150 horses in training, Broberg maintains strings in Louisiana at Louisiana Downs and at Evangeline Downs, where he won six races from six starters on Aug. 19. Those Evangeline Downs horses will go to Delta Downs when the meet ends on Saturday. He also has horses at Canterbury Park in Minnesota and Prairie Meadows in Iowa.

So far in 2020, he's won 236 races from 1,187 starts, a 20% winning percentage.

“I intend on sending some horses to Kentucky and I want to send a few to Belmont,” Broberg added. “I'm going to try to establish myself at Hawthorne and use that as the replacement for Remington Park.”

Karl Broberg got off to a quick start at Remington Park, winning the opening night feature, the $75,000 Governor’s Cup S., with Hunka Burning Love (Into Mischief). But Broberg is resigned to the fact that there won’t be many more winners for his stable at the Oklahoma track. A mainstay at Remington throughout his career, Broberg was denied stalls at the meet which opened Friday, and he says he’s yet to get a reasonable explanation as to why.

“I really wish I knew the answer,” Broberg said. “It was what I deem a very bizarre decision on their part and I have had multiple meetings now trying to get a straight answer as to why.”

Broberg is allowed to race at Remington, but said that without stalls he has cut back drastically on his division in Oklahoma and has 16 horses there at a nearby training center when he normally has about 80 based at the track. He is planning on moving most of the horses that would have raced at Remington to Hawthorne.

Broberg made 289 starts last year at Remington and finished second in the standings behind Steve Asmussen with 57 winners. He had hoped to do as well, if not better, this year until he was told he would not be getting stalls. He said the decision was made by Remington Vice President of Operations Matt Vance. At deadline for this story, Vance had not returned a phone call seeking comment.

Broberg said Vance has said little about the decision to deny him stalls, which has left him to guess what the reasons might be. He said one issue is likely comments he has made on social media about Remington and Lone Star Park, tracks owned by the same company, Global Gaming Solutions. Broberg admits he hasn’t mastered the art of political correctness and that his outspoken nature can get him into trouble.

On Aug. 19, he tweeted: “My best friend was wrong when he predicted Twitter would end my career quickly because I lack a filter. So far it has only resulted in losing stalls at a track near and dear to my heart while allowing me to share wisdom, humor, nonsense, and disgustingly self promote.”

On Twitter, he has complained a number of times about Remington’s decision to do away with main track-only entries in turf races, calling it the “Steve Asmussen rule.”

“I confirmed this morning that the no MTO entry rule change is still in place,” he tweeted. “However, I would prefer to reference it as the Steve Asmussen rule since I am focused on being positive about every venue I have the privilege of partaking in.”

He said he will try to be careful when it comes to what he posts on social media platforms.

“I will just worry about running my own barn in the future instead of trying to make the world a better place,” he said of his social media posts.

Another factor, Broberg said, could be his criticism of the local horsemen’s group, the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma.

“They have created a culture there at Remington Park where they constantly cave to the horsemen’s organization,” he said. “It’s just strange the way that track is run. They’ve created a culture where the inmates are running the asylum. They have tendency to bow down to the trainers that have an Oklahoma driver’s license.”

Broberg, who led the nation in wins every year from 2014 through 2019, has had his problems at Remington in the past. In 2013 he was banned outright for an entire meet after The Jockey Club denied him the privileges of the American Stud Book, the result of having three or more medication violations over the course of a 365-day period. In 2017, he was fined $20,000 after his stable mixed up the identity of two horses, both of whom raced under the wrong name.

“I’ve made more than my fair share of mistakes in racing,” he said.

After being fined in 2017, Broberg was allowed to stable and race at Remington in 2018 and 2019 and he said he has done nothing since then to warrant losing his stalls.

“I am in a spot where I am the villain and I don’t get it,” he said. “My help is respectful and quiet. We keep to ourselves and do everything right. There’s always been this dark cloud that hangs over us in Oklahoma City and I don’t have that anywhere else that I run.”

Broberg said he is confident the Remington ruling has nothing to do with any medication violations.

“It’s not like we’re (Jorge) Navarro or (Jason) Servis and winning at some phenomenal rate and doing incredible things that you can’t figure out when you look at the Racing Form to see how this horse is running in such a matter,” he said.

While losing stalls at Remington has been a setback for his operation, losing them at Lone Star would hurt even more. Broberg lives in the Dallas area and stabling at Lone Star affords him more time with his children.

“I have been told there won’t be a problem at Lone Star, but I know if I cry about what’s going on at Remington too much, it will be uncertain where this could go,” he said. “To not have stalls at Lone Star would really pain me because that is home to me. It’s my chance to do what I love while being able to stay home with my kids.”

Broberg, who is second in the nation in wins this year behind Asmussen, still has plenty of outlets for his horses. That’s not a problem. He is also currently racing at Louisiana Downs, Canterbury Park, Evangeline Downs and Prairie Meadows. He said he is ready to move on and accept the Remington decision, even if he doesn’t understand it.

Social media has been a game-changer for animal adoptions of all kinds; it allows organizations to reach more people for less cost than traditional print or radio campaigns. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced people into their homes, many with more idle time than usual, they became a captive audience spending more time on social media, a fact that wasn't lost on New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program, the nation's oldest and largest racehorse rehoming program.

Anna Ford, Thoroughbred Program Director at New Vocations in Lexington, KY, spoke to the ASPCA about how the program uses social media to help their horses find homes. In April and May, New Vocations adopted out 163 horses into new homes—an astounding number in and of itself, but adding a pandemic to the mix makes that number even more impressive.

Anna credits adding in daily Facebook Live “meet-and-greets” with adoptable horses and the lowering of adoption fees to assisting in moving so many horses. The videos were then shared on Instagram, YouTube and Twitter, with an exponential growth in viewership.

New Vocations tailors its content to each platform; on Twitter the program focuses mainly on the racing industry, and Facebook, YouTube and Instagram are where potential adopters generally look for horses. The Facebook Live sessions have been extremely well received; potential adopters feel they get to “know” the horses a bit more than what we post online in their biographies.

The program plans to continue the Facebook Live sessions even after businesses reopen across the country.
