The early nomination phase will close Monday, Jan. 29 with the $600 payment only available to be made online. Horses not nominated by Jan. 29 can still enter with a $6,000 payment due Monday, Apr. 1. Last year's early Triple Crown nominations attracted 369 horses and 13 late nominees.

Horses under the care of any trainer suspended from competing in the 2024 GI Kentucky Derby or the 2024 GI Kentucky Oaks (as applicable) must be transferred to a non-suspended trainer by Jan. 29 to become eligible for the applicable race.

Horses under the care of a suspended trainer will become eligible to earn qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby or Road to the Kentucky Oaks on a forward-looking basis after the transfer is complete so long as it is by the deadline.

Churchill Downs released the 2024 “Official Art of the Kentucky Derby” by artist Wylie Caudill, the track said in a release Thursday.

Originally from Cynthiana, Kentucky, Caudill gravitated to public art and expanded his street art to murals which can be seen across the state, many of which include his signature roses. His artwork for the Derby features 150 red roses representing the Winner's Circle surrounded by white, gold and cerulean roses to symbolize the colorful fans from around the world.

“As a Kentucky Native, it is an immense honor to be part of such a milestone year for the Commonwealth's most notable event,” Caudill said. “It's difficult for me to fathom the scale of this opportunity and moment in history, but I am thrilled I was chosen to be the official artist for the 150th Kentucky Derby.”

Caudill will also be the official artist for the Woodford Reserve Commemorative Derby Bottle. As the official artist for both programs, he will also create original murals around Churchill Downs and surprise locations leading up to early May.

Churchill Downs Racetrack officials have made slight modifications to the upcoming Road to the Kentucky Derby, the series of select races that will determine the preference list for the 150th GI Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve on Saturday, May 4, 2024, the track said in a release Friday.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby, which debuted in 2013, annually awards a sliding scale of points to the top five finishing positions in select qualifying races. At the conclusion of the series, the leaderboard will determine the preference list for entries into the 20-horse Kentucky Derby.

Second-place points in all qualifying races have been increased to create added separation from second and third-place finishers. Additionally, third and fourth-place points in races that award 100 points to winner have been decreased.

Five months after New Hampshire gambling regulators and the state's attorney general disclosed that they were investigating the TwinSpires advance deposit wagering (ADW) platform over concerns that the Churchill Downs, Inc. (CDI)-owned entity has operated for years without being explicitly licensed there, TwinSpires is ceasing operations in the Granite State.

Back in April, Charlie McIntyre, the executive director of the New Hampshire Lottery, which regulates all forms of gambling in the state, told WMUR-TV that “They're not regulated by us, nor do they operate on any confines of state law…. It's a concern for us, obviously, because all other gambling in the state happens through us-either we license it, or we regulate it. In this case, neither.”

At that time, McIntyre estimated the amount of lost revenue because of TwinSpires not giving the state a cut of its betting business at “hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

McIntyre continued: “They've been doing it for a number of years, and so it's a significant amount of money.”

TwinSpires customers in New Hampshire began receiving emails Sept. 29 informing them that “TwinSpires has elected to cease operation of its ADW Platform for Horse Racing in the state of New Hampshire.”

The email stated that TwinSpires will take wagers from New Hampshire residents on races conducted through Nov. 5th, the concluding day of the Breeders' Cup championships.

After that, the email stated, “Wagering will be suspended on Nov. 6th, and Players will have until Nov. 21 to withdraw funds from their account.”

A Friday afternoon query to Tonya Abeln, CDI's vice president of corporate communications, did not yield a reply prior to deadline for this story.

Nor could McIntyre be reached Friday afternoon to get the lottery commission's perspective on the TwinSpires pullout.

Back in April, CDI officials told the gaming news site casino.org that TwinSpires was “legal and compliant with the federal Interstate Horse Racing Act.”

A FAQ page provided in CDI's email to New Hampshire customers cited non-specific “regulatory changes in New Hampshire” as the gaming corporation's reason for vacating the state.

“As of right now we do not know what the future holds for TwinSpires as an ADW Platform for Horse Racing in New Hampshire but we are hopeful to serve you again soon,” the FAQ page stated.

In April, McIntyre told WMUR-TV that he had approached CDI about resolving the issue, but that “nothing has happened yet.”

New Hampshire no longer has live pari-mutuel racing of any breed. Thoroughbred racing ceased at Rockingham Park in 2002, and harness racing ceased there in 2009. The state had three greyhound tracks operating at the start of the 21st Century; two of them stopped racing before dog racing was banished in New Hampshire in 2010.

Monmouth Park announced last week that it will begin to offer fixed odds wagering starting May 7, opening day of the meet. That was the good news. The bad news was that fixed odds betting will begin with a cautious rollout and without the major players in the sport on board.

Starting Saturday, bettors on-track at Monmouth will have the choice of making traditional pari-mutuel bets or placing fixed odds wagers. Two areas of the track will be designated for fixed odds and the bets can only be made through tellers. The minimum bet will be $1. Any wager calculated to return a profit of $5,000 or more on a win bet or $2,000 or more on a place or show bet will be subject to approval. At the start, the only track available to patrons will be Monmouth Park.

It's a bit disappointing that the bets will be limited to on-track patrons at first. Without having an on-line outlet, the handle will likely be very small at first. According to Dallas Baker, who is the head of international operations for BetMakers, the Australian firm that will deliver and manage fixed odds wagering at Monmouth Park, it won't be long until New Jersey residents can bet on-line. Some regulatory hurdles need to be cleared and when they are, the on-line bookmakers in the state licensed to accept sports bets will begin to take fixed odds racing bets. There are no current plans to have traditional ADWs like TVG, Twin Spires and Xpressbet accept fixed odds bets.

Saturday, will mark an exciting development. For years, the sport has been debating the importance of fixed odds bets and whether or not it should be part of racing's future. Now, finally, it will be offered by a U.S. track on U.S. wagers and we can start to see how it all plays out and whether or not players will gravitate to the new form of wagering. Fixed odds betting has been particularly successful in Australia, where it has led to a sizeable increase in total handle, which has boosted purses, and has been the most popular form of wagering in the U.K. for decades.

Should fixed-odds betting catch on, it will go a long way toward solving what is a huge and growing problem for the sport. With the computer-assisted players dominating the pari-mutuel pools, the everyday bettor has no idea what price his or her horse is going to go off at. You might bet a horse who is 4-1 going into the gate and it gets pounded down to 2-1 at the last second. Win or lose, that leaves a very bad taste in the bettors' mouths.

Recognizing that, Monmouth had adopted a marketing slogan for the fixed odds bets, “the odds that you bet are the odds that you get.”

While fixed odds can help with the massive problem of shifting odds, that's only one small part of the picture. Will it help to grow the sport? That's the great unknown.

To work, fixed odds wagering will have to lure some sports bettors over to racing. As things stand now, the pari-mutuel form of wagering doesn't fit into the model of on-line sports betting, but fixed odds do. If a sports bettor could place a fixed-odds wager on Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo) at +900 in the GI Kentucky Derby, that might be something they'd be inclined to do. The sports bettor is always looking for action and even obscure sports such as ping pong have attracted a surprisingly large amount of handle. Sports betting is a huge business and if racing could tap into just a sliver of the market that would mean significant gains.

“There are opportunities in front of us, specifically in sports betting, that offer us what I would term probably a once-in-a-generation opportunity,” NYRA CEO and President David O'Rourke said at last year's University of Arizona's Race Track Industry Program's Global Symposium on Racing. “Our content isn't on those platforms yet and we have the opportunity to actually do that. There's a lot of hurdles to get there. I know there's a panel on fixed odds and that's a debate, but in the end I believe, and I think our company believes, you have to give the customers what they want. We do have a great product–pari-mutuel is excellent, it's great specifically in the exotics, but there is room, I believe, for proposition bets and for this content to live side by side. And I think as these sportsbooks grow and acquire customers, that's just a huge distribution channel for us.”

O'Rourke isn't wrong, but this won't work if the product is not a good one. A different form of fixed odds betting was already tried in New Jersey, and it was a bust. Betfair, which offers exchange wagering and is wildly popular in the U.K., began in 2016. Four years later, the plug was pulled. Betfair was handling so little money that it no longer made economic sense to keep the platform operating. Betfair failed for a number of reasons, but the main problem may have been the content it offered. All of the top tracks, including the Stronach and Churchill tracks and NYRA, did not offer their signals to Betfair. What was left were tracks like Turf Paradise and Penn National. There just wasn't an appetite to bet on those smaller tracks.

So far, fixed-odds betting is saddled with the same issues. Baker said that about 15 tracks have signed up and that within a few weeks on-track players at Monmouth can also make fixed-odds bets on those signals. But BetMakers has not signed up any of the same premier tracks that Betfair never landed. That is a problem.

Baker is hoping that fixed odds will eventually prove to be so successful that tracks will come to the realization that it is something they need to be a part of.

“I'd like to think that once we start to show the model, we will prove that the sky isn't going to fall down because of fixed-odds wagering,” Baker said. “We're not expecting a miracle solution day one, to flip the switch and everything has changed. This is something that is going to take at least six to 12 months before it starts capturing the attention to the extent it needs to do before we see any great results. We hope this will speak for itself, that this is a really good solution for the racing industry. We hope the results speak for themselves and make it a no-brainer for other tracks to become involved once we can get rid of the fear factor. Once it starts speaking for itself, it will become an obvious decision for other tracks to be involved.”

Baker said that NYRA has expressed interest in selling its signal to BetMakers for fixed odds betting.

That would help, but it's going to take a lot more than that. It's understandable that tracks want to proceed slowly and let a place like Monmouth be the guinea pig. There is a possibility that fixed odds will do nothing more than siphon money out of the pari-mutuel pools and not grow the pie. That wouldn't do anyone any good.

A future sport without fixed odds and ties with on-line bookmakers is not a pretty picture, not with the way sports betting is dominating the landscape. This needs to be given a chance. And that means the top tier tracks coming on board. It means working behind the scenes to legalize fixed-odds bets throughout the country. It means looking at ways to involve the ADWs. It means taking these steps sooner rather than later.

Yes, it's still early in the game and, yes, having fixed odds betting at Monmouth is one small step in the right direction. But it's just one racetrack in one state taking bets on only one track and offering them only to those who are at the track. One would have hoped this could have hit the groung running. That hasn't happened. Hopefully, the best is yet to come.

Sunday's Super Bowl against the Los Angeles Rams marks the Bengals' first championship appearance since 1989 and only the third in the franchise's history. They seek their first win. The Twin Spires have been the signature symbol of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby since their completion in 1895.

For more than 40 years, Asher was the voice and face of horse racing and radio broadcasting in Kentucky. He joined the Churchill Downs family in 1997 and served as Vice President of Racing Communications until his untimely passing on Aug. 27, 2018 at age 62.

Asher, who always spoke of his hero Col. Matt Winn, once said, “When I get to the great day, I would be awfully happy if someone said, 'Matt Winn would've loved this guy.'”

Winn, who served as general manager and later president of Churchill Downs from 1914 until his passing at age 88 in 1949, was the driving force in the development of the Downs and a tireless promoter of his beloved Kentucky Derby.

Larry Melancon might not have been the top jockey at Churchill Downs during his long career, though he ranks among the winningest riders at the historic Louisville track even a decade after his retirement.

But no Churchill Downs jockey can match the resilience and longevity of Melancon, whose tenure of riding full-time under the Twin Spires for 36 consecutive years is unprecedented. Melancon, whose first official race was in 1971, arrived at Churchill Downs for the 1974 spring session. Up through his retirement on July 4, 2010 at Churchill Downs, the jockey had won at least one race per meet with the exception of the three he did not ride: fall of 1974, spring of 1979 and spring of 1993, when he fractured three ribs at Keeneland.

Melancon died at age 65 Thursday morning with his wife of seven years, Denise Hasher Melancon, at his side in their Louisville home. The former jockey succumbed to complications from the debilitating stroke he suffered four years ago.

“It's a personal loss. Larry was a very close friend and we worked together for a lot of years, going back probably as long as we can both remember,” said Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. “He was a good man and well-liked throughout the racing community. He was respected by a lot of horsemen, and a lot of good horsemen, like Lynn Whiting. There were a lot of people who liked to have Larry on their team because he had such a good opinion of a horse. Riding, he'd always give you a good effort, and we had a lot of great outcomes.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Melancon totaled 2,857 victories and more than $60 million in purse earnings through his 38 years riding. When he retired, his 914 wins at Churchill Downs ranked No. 3 all-time, with his 47 stakes victories ranking fourth. Even 11 years later, Melancon still ranks seventh in both categories.

“He was a fixture at Churchill Downs,” said jockey, friend and fellow Cajun product Robby Albarado, who in his first career race in 1990 back in their native Louisiana used one of Melancon's old saddles. “He showed up every day and did his job.”

Melancon was at Churchill Downs before the track's legendary all-time win leader Pat Day arrived. He rode an additional five years after his good friend and long-time rival retired in 2005.

Day ruled the roost at Churchill Downs in the 1980s and 1990s. Melancon rode for many of the same outfits and didn't get a lot of the top assignments in the afternoon unless Day was out of town. But he had a long and successful career making the best of his opportunities at the races. And Day is among the first to acknowledge that Melancon was the better choice to put on a horse in the morning.

“He was one of the best all-around horsemen that I've been around,” Day said. “Very proficient rider, but he understood the condition book. He understood horses. I was a good jockey. I wasn't what I'd call an all-around horseman like he was.

“It used to aggravate him. We'd sit down and start talking, and he'd say, 'Do you know if Lynn is going to run that horse back in the 'non-winners of two?' I'd say, 'Larry, I don't have a clue.' That was my agent's business. Larry knew everything. He'd seen the horse run.”

Mott recalled Melancon working Taylor's Special before the eventual 1984 Louisiana Derby and Blue Grass Stakes winner ever ran. After the work, Melancon simply told the trainer, 'Well, when you run him, just go get your coat and tie on.'”

Retired trainer Don Winfree referred to Melancon as the “real good mechanic” everyone wants to have.

“He could get on a horse, and if you had a little problem, he could help you pinpoint it,” he said. “For years I had a lot of young horses who hadn't started, were coming along. Larry was kind of my test pilot to help me value them before we'd make a start. I used to like to bet on the first-time starters. He'd say, 'Don, this horse can win for $30,000' or 'This horse can win for $50,000.' I told him, 'Larry, I don't want to know what he can win for. I want to know what he can't lose for.' Larry was a dear friend. We used to hunt and fish together, and he was the ultimate professional. Another good one gone.”

Every trainer who rode Melancon seems to have a similar story.

“He was unbelievably good in the morning,” said Al Stall Jr., for whom Melancon worked after he retired from race-riding. “If a horse breezed well, he'd say, 'Get the condition book out.' I didn't need to hear any details such as 'he switched leads' or 'he finished up strong.' When he said 'get the condition book out,' that means everything was ready to go. He was generally right. He rode a nice, patient race and was thoughtful early in a race and had a very strong finish.”

Beyond Melancon's skill with horses, Stall noted how people naturally gravitated to him, recalling a special summer when the former jockey went up with him to Saratoga in 2012.

“We had a really good time,” Stall said, adding of the current president of Claiborne Farm, “Walker Hancock was just a hotwalker, feeling his way up the ranks. Walker would bring all these young guys, his friends, around the barn. They just loved Larry. At night we'd all go to someone's house and Larry would cook Cajun food. Those kids were just in heaven. They thought Larry was like king of the world. Because he was funny — and he could cook.”

Melancon was a quiet leader by example on and off the track, including helping young riders. He and Day united with then-trainer and current WinStar Farm president Elliott Walden and former trainer Bill Million to get Churchill Downs' first full-time chaplain. The quartet subsequently worked to raise the money to build the backstretch chapel.

“He was a brother in the Lord,” Day said. “Larry was instrumental in the chaplaincy as we know it. And a fierce competitor on the racetrack.”

Melancon's mother, the late Winona Champagne, was a trainer. He grew up near Lafayette, La., in Breaux Bridge, the self-proclaimed Crawfish Capital of the World. Long before he was old enough to legally ride at a sanctioned track such as nearby Evangeline Downs, Melancon from the time he was 9 rode match races at the bush tracks around the Acadiana region, the cradle of so many talented American-born jockeys.

Sheila Day, Pat Day's wife, grew up in the area and knew Melancon since she was 6.

“The next step was to get into the 'big-time,' Evangeline Downs,” she said. “And he made Churchill Downs. Young people respected that Larry was able to climb those heights, to get to Churchill Downs. His family was very respected in the area. His legacy is going to live on for a long time.”

Melancon won 43 graded stakes, including Keeneland's Grade 1 Blue Grass on Bachelor Beau for trainer Phil Hauswald in 1986. He captured four Grade 2 stakes, including Churchill Downs' Stephen Foster, on the Niall O'Callaghan-trained Guided Tour. Melancon rode in the Kentucky Derby four times, his best finish being fourth on Amano in 1976.

He won Oaklawn Park's 1997 Rebel Stakes on the Whiting-trained Phantom On Tour, finishing second by a half-length in the Arkansas Derby. While Jerry Bailey was aboard for the horse's sixth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, Melancon the next year won the New Orleans Handicap on Phantom On Tour with his mother in attendance. Albarado said that win photo, prominently displayed in the Melancons' house, was his friend's favorite victory.

Melancon remained involved with the track after his retirement, galloping horses and helping out Stall and working as jockey Calvin Borel's agent. When he married Denise seven years ago, the couple began traveling and engaging in outdoors pursuits. With no warning symptoms, he suffered a stroke when the couple were in North Carolina to hike part of the Appalachian Trail.

“Larry was a very good rider and even better person who was courage personified in the face of great personal adversity,” said Caton Bredar, the racing broadcaster and a family friend.

Even last August the Melancons found a way to go fishing out on Lake Huron in Michigan, which proved Larry's last trip. Denise Melancon said her husband continued to greatly looked forward to the regular Monday night potluck dinners they'd have over with Dallas Stewart, the trainer getting a ramp for his house to accommodate Larry's wheelchair.

Melancon's health had deteriorated in recent months, with her son, Keelan Allen, and Albarado's son Kaden providing immeasurable assistance in his care with kindness, gentleness and compassion, Denise Melancon said.

“He was at home, went peacefully, for which I'm very grateful,” she said. “Everybody loved him. He never had a cross word and was so giving to people. We still did a lot after the stroke. I said, 'You are not going to be a victim of circumstances.' And we lived life.”

Said Churchill Downs Racetrack President Mike Anderson: “The Churchill Downs family is deeply saddened to learn the news of former jockey Larry Melancon's passing. Larry was amongst the winningest jockeys in Churchill Downs history and was known for his skilled horsemanship. More importantly, Larry was a class-act who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be greatly missed. Our condolences go out to his numerous friends and family during this difficult time.”

Melancon was preceded in death by mother Winona Champagne and father Vermillian Melancon. In addition to his wife, Melancon is survived by son Lance Melancon, Louisville; daughter Heather Schapansky, Tyler, Texas; stepson Keelan Allen, Annapolis, Md.; sisters Judy Theriot and Vickie Guchereau; and grandchildren Caleb and Nathan Schapansky and Lawrence Melancon.

Newcomer Funeral Home-East Louisville handled arrangements. Denise Melancon said her husband's ashes will join his mother in Breaux Bridge. No public service is scheduled, per the jockey's request. The family suggests memorial gifts go to The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation, 40 E. 52nd Street, New York, N.Y., 10022, or the Permanently Disabled Jockey Fund, P.O. Box 803, Elmhurst, Ill, 60126.
