The one-mile event, worth £200,000, is the final Group 1 of the British Flat season and is set to be contested on Saturday, Oct. 28. A total of 66 entries remain, including Aidan O'Brien's unbeaten G1 National S. winner Henry Longfellow (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Lezoo, who became her sire's second Northern Hemisphere winner when saluting at Bath, was his first such pattern-race scorer at Ascot and now becomes the Tweenhills resident's first at Europe's elite level. Zoustar has 60 yearlings still engaged at the upcoming Goffs, Tattersalls and Arqana sales. The G1 Golden Rose S. and G1 Coolmore Stud S. hero, who is to shuttle back this way for the 2023 breeding season, has eight in the Orby, three in the Sportsman's, 12 in Book 1, 19 in Book 2, 16 in Book 3 and two at Arqana's October fixture.

“She went slightly off after the Princess Margaret, but had four very quick runs in succession and it just caught up with her,” revealed trainer Ralph Beckett after registering a first win in the contest. “I wasn't sure she was back on her game, she just did one easy piece of work last week on the grass and that worked well. She is obviously very good and we have never had one as good as this at this stage. She doesn't show up at home and she caught me out first time. I told her owners that she would win a novice and that would be it and that shows how wrong you can be. She has just got better and better with racing.” Looking ahead, the trainer added, “I would have to think about going again this year and it is possible, if we are going to go anywhere, she would go to Keeneland [for the Breeders' Cup], but I would have think about that. We'll see how she comes out of this and then see whether we think it is the right thing for her.

“Frankie rang me this morning to give me some really valuable insights, but it was unfortunate he couldn't take the ride as he is suspended,” explained William Buick after adding to his success aboard Lumiere in 2015. “She jumped a bit slow, but travelled well and was always giving me confidence in the race. At the business end she really summed herself up well as she's a real fighter and has a lot of quality. She has got plenty of gears and is an out-and-out six-furlong filly. It's great and I was lucky to get the ride.”

Lezoo, half to a yearling filly by Territories (Ire) and a weanling colt by Invincible Army (Ire), becomes the fourth elite-level winner for her sire (by Northern Meteor {Aus}) and the first for G3 Firth Of Clyde S. victrix Roger Sez (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire}), who has thrown four winners from five runners. “My wife Fiona and my daughters, Talitha, Jemima and Kitty, came with me,” says Howden. “We didn't know who we were meeting, but it turned out to be David Redvers. He showed us horses working on the gallops and then took us to some of the trainers' yards in Newmarket. We went racing, and had the huge excitement of watching Roaring Lion run in the 2000 Guineas.

“Having resisted getting involved in racing for many years, when talking to David Redvers I began to think that I would like to get into the sport. We came up with a plan concentrated around mares and fillies – to buy mares and breed from them, and to buy fillies, race them and then breed from them.

“Like all the best-laid plans, it hasn't always turned out quite like that – one gets tempted into buying a colt or two – but that is the crux of what we do. I remember going to the Tattersalls Mares' Sales that December for the first time, and we bought our first mares there, all in-foal – one of them to Frankel. We bred our first foals, and from there we have built up our mares and our racing fillies.

“A lot of the focus this year is on the fact that I have got quite a few of my own 2-year-olds, where I have chosen and bought the mares, or raced the fillies before breeding from them, in action. My whole ethos is that yes, I am passionate about racing, but in the context of wanting to breed, not just buy. I have a real passion for horses, and for horse sport.”

The word “passion” comes up repeatedly when talking to – or about – Howden. Passion, and drive. His genuine enthusiasm is so obvious that it is infectious, and his ability to inspire people who work with him means that he is achieving some lofty ambitions.  Horses are at the heart of it; he loves riding, as do his daughters – it is a family activity. It is for many, though few throw themselves into the sports that spring out of a hobby quite so energetically and on such a scale.

He now owns and co-owns several valuable mares, is racing their offspring, has shares in others, and his company Howden, the global insurance broker he founded in 1994, is an official partner at Ascot Racecourse and sponsored the Crown Prince's Cup in Bahrain in January. Jemima and Kitty Howden are eventing competitively at under-18 level, and the horse trials he founded in 2020 at his home, Cornbury House in Oxfordshire, has quickly become a star attraction on the circuit. No toe-dipping here; this is a swallow dive into the ocean of the racing and equestrian worlds.

Howden's broodmare band encompasses 11 mares that he either wholly owns or jointly owns with Nick Wheeler (Cornthrop Bloodstock) or with Sheikh Fahad Al Thani and David Redvers under the Tweenhills banner.

Redvers says, “Sheikh Fahad and I see him as a wonderful partner because of the shared enthusiasm and passion for racing. He and Sheikh Fahad get on very well – David is a man of serious integrity.”

After that first meeting in Newmarket in 2018, Redvers asked Howden a couple of weeks later if he fancied going halves on a horse at the Arqana May Breeze-up Sale. Together they bought Reponse Exacte (Fr) (Rajsaman {Fr}) for €85,000.

“Because of the sort of person he is, David said yes immediately. She won first time out two weeks later – his first ever runner!” says Redvers.

A gamble to run her in the Albany S. at Royal Ascot didn't pay off, but the filly had done her job – Howden was hooked on owning racehorses.

The first mare he bought, for 325,000gns at Tattersalls that December of 2018, was Bella Nouf (GB) (Dansili {GB}). She was in foal to Frankel (GB), and the filly she was carrying was sold a year later for 350,000gns. Named Majestic Glory (GB), she won the G3 Sweet Solera S. at Newmarket's July Meeting in 2021. Bella Nouf's next foal, another filly, this time by Roaring Lion, is in training with John Gosden.

Listed winner Gorgeous Noora (Ire) (Raven's Pass) has just had a smart Kameko filly foal. Castle Hill Cassie (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}) has a “lovely” Zoustar (Aus) in training with Hugo Palmer. Run Wild (Ger) (Amaron {GB}), the Listed Pretty Polly S. winner in 2020 – in whom Howden purchased a share when she was racing, and as a broodmare is now owned by David and Nick Wheeler as Cornthrop – has a Siyouni (Fr) filly foal at foot, and has been covered this time by Night Of Thunder (Ire).

While it is clear that the concept of racing his own stock holds great appeal to Howden, who likes to develop a project “from the ground up” – at Cornbury House Horse Trials (8-11 September 2022) his focus is on the best of young British talent, in the shape of horses and riders – he is determined to have fun and is prepared to invest in “form” horses along the way. Last year Howden and Redvers bought the Adrian Nicholls-trained sprinter Mo Celita (Ire) (Camacho {GB}), who then started favourite in the Palace of Holyroodhouse S. at Royal Ascot and finished fifth. She won a Listed race at Deauville under Hollie Doyle in August, however – a day that Howden names among his most enjoyable on the track so far.

“That was a fantastic day, and the other was watching Wilderness Girl (Ire) (No Nay Never) win at Glorious Goodwood with my mother, who's 95,” says Howden. “It was just before Wilderness [the music festival hosted at Cornbury each summer]; my mother loved it and Charles [the Duke of Richmond] kindly took us up to his private box.”

Mo Celita is back in training this year. She ran disappointingly in the Cammidge Trophy at Doncaster on the opening day of the Flat season, but was discovered to be in season. She is joined by the likes of a Zoustar colt out of Bewitchment (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), also the dam of Listed winner Nymphadora (GB) (No Nay Never), who is in training with Andrew Balding. Karl Burke has charge of a Roaring Lion filly out of Roedean (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}); Hugo Palmer has the Zoustar 2-year-old out of Castle Hill Cassie, while 4-year-old Wren's Breath (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}), whom he owns with Peter Molony, is in Ireland with Henry de Bromhead.

While Howden's bloodstock endeavours have the base of commercial soundness, his part in the racing world might appear a thorough extension of a personal interest, were it not for his company's explosion on to the scene as one of Ascot's three main partners (alongside QIPCO and Longines). Racing is far more than a hobby. Howden's keen brain means he sees a much bigger picture than that. It is an excellent way for his eponymous company, which already had a connection to the sport in that it arranges insurance for racecourses, trainers, owners and stud farms, as well as equestrian associations and riding schools, to gain visibility and brand recognition, in Britain and worldwide.

“You get a huge amount of bang for your buck in racing sponsorship if you place it wisely,” says Redvers. “For a global business like David's, Ascot is a perfect fit, as it is for QIPCO.”

In June 2021 the Howden Group became an official partner of Ascot Racecourse in a five-year deal; as well as a significant presence at the Royal meeting and all of Ascot's racedays, the two-day pre-Christmas National Hunt meeting is now the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend.

Howden says, “After our first year, we've really got some traction going and I'm very happy with our partnership with Ascot; our partnership aims to promote the best of British, but both the Howden Group and Ascot are businesses which have a very strong international reach as well.

“A key thing was for Howden – which has a very large horse sport and bloodstock division – to be able to support the racing industry, and what better way to do that than at Ascot, which has achieved so much to create such a phenomenal experience for those who love its world-class racing. Last year we were still battling hard with the Covid pandemic, and it was important to us to support racing in difficult times. It was a great fit for us – a British company, now the  leading UK-headquartered insurance broker in the market, which has been built up with employee ownership at its heart. We are delighted with the way the first year of our partnership is going, in terms of the brand recognition we have received, the entertainment we have been able to give our clients, partners and employees, and also the feedback we have had in terms of raising our profile, at home and globally. In January Howden became the first international sponsor of the Crown Prince's Cup in Bahrain, a venture that Howden approached with customary enthusiasm.

“As well as being a British company, we are also an international business, as is racing, and I was keen to help support a really up-and-coming racing nation,” Howden says.

In a racing landscape crying out for blue-chip sponsors, David Howden must seem like manna from heaven.

“He goes into everything like a whirlwind, and people end up working particularly hard for him as he has such energy, enthusiasm and passion,” says Redvers.

From zero to “hero” in four years; it will be fascinating to see where Howden's clever intertwining of business, sport and family life take him next.

Putting in his best juvenile form on soft ground when successful in the Listed Ascendant S. over a mile at Haydock in September 2019, Pyledriver returned last year to be second in the re-routed G3 Classic Trial over a mile and a quarter on Kempton's Polytrack in early June taking the King Edward VII over this trip at Royal Ascot. After his luckless trip in the Derby, he defied a three-pound penalty in style in the Great Voltigeur before finishing third in the G1 St Leger at Doncaster in September and seventh in the G1 Qipco Champion S. at Ascot in October. Showing a tendency to veer away from the whip on more than one occasion, he was hard against the rail from six out following Dwyer's bold manoeuvre and may have been helped by Al Aasy pinning him down against the fence in the closing stages. His jockey thinks so. “With the rail out [to save ground for Derby day], we were actually racing on the steepest part of the camber and so I was conscious to get to the rail,” he explained. “Jim [Crowley] growls in a finish and gave me no room whatsoever, so it was a real ding-dong battle and I have to say my horse was very brave and pulled out all stops. The first two were a long way in front of two very good horses. All the good horses are in the hands of a very few trainers now and I think that is why people like to see horses like this fella and his sporting owners as the underdog having a go on the big day and achieving something.”

“He's been frustrating at times, but he has tons of ability and was just too fresh and keen at Newmarket and got tired,” Dwyer, who at 46 was continuing the trend of older jockeys winning at the top level so far in this country in 2021. “I struggled with him there, as he was like a bottle of coke that had been shook up but today he was different class and that's all down to the team. We had decided to give him his head this time and let him bowl along and he relaxed so I tried to control the race from second place. Last time we came here, we got flattened at the top of the hill and it was game over but when you get a horse that travels as well as him it's ideal around here. I was able to give him a nice breather and save petrol in case he got into a real scrap, which he did in the end. He'd beaten horses who had gone on to win group 1s afterwards and he's mixed it at the top level a few times, so we were always confident he'd win a group 1 himself. Not many trainers drive their own horses to a group 1 in their own horsebox and win it, so all credit to William.”

For Muir, it was a first success at the highest level and he said, “I started training in 1990 and I've got touched off in group ones, with Stepper Point in two of them and also Averti got beaten in a photo in the Prix de l'Abbaye–this is what we do it for,” he said. “Chris Grassick has only been at the job five minutes and he's got a group one winner! I came here thinking he'd win. I had a meeting yesterday with the owners at a service station and we decided we were going to make the running and change the bridle. When he went to Newmarket, I was in no place to say he was 100 per cent, as today was the day and he was very brave. If you watch it from the outside people ask 'why does he wander, why does he do this and that'. It's just in his make-up, I don't know why he does it, but he is brave.”

Pyledriver's program is set in stone now. “It's mapped out–the Jockey Club Stakes, the Coronation Cup, the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot and then the King George,” Muir added. “I should think we'll look at the Arc later on in the year, if we're allowed to go with Covid and everything.”
Pyledriver is the first foal out of La Pyle (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), who is a full-sister to the G3 Park Express S. winner Normandel (Fr) and a half to the G1 Grand Prix de Paris hero Mont Ormel (Fr) (Air Chief Marshal {Ire}) and the dam of this week's Listed Glencairn S. winner Maganimous (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and the G3 Irish St Leger Trial-placed Micro Mange (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}). The third dam Lidakiya (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}) produced the G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis and G1 Premio Vittorio di Capua-winning sire Linngari (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) and is kin to the triple listed scorer and G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup runner-up Livadiya (Ire) (Shernazar {Ire}). Previously featured in the Follow The Foals series, which was created by Ascot and Official Partner QIPCO, the progress of the sextet has been charted since birth. The group includes a son of Frankel (GB) out of QIPCO British Champions Fillies and Mares S. Victrix Simple Verse (Ire) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}).

The winners of the social media competition will be selected by Qatar Racing's founder Sheikh Fahad and David Redvers, racing manager of Qatar Racing's and owner of Tweenhills.

“All six were born at Tweenhills and it has been a pleasure to watch them grow and progress at the stud,” said Redvers. “They now take the next big step in their racing careers and head into training with their respective trainers. “It was hugely exciting to have Kameko arrive at Tweenhills last night and after a gruelling 40-hour journey from Kentucky; he bounced off the lorry and has been striding around the place this morning like he owns it,” said Tweenhills owner David Redvers. “I feel we have priced him extremely competitively this year and will also be offering a small amount of equity in the horse to breeders. Details are to be released later this week.”

Also available at Tweenhills in 2021 for £25,000 will be Australian sensation Zoustar (Aus), whose first Northern Hemisphere foals arrived this year.

“Zoustar continues to enhance his already heady reputation and it is a real coup for European breeders to have such an exceptional young sire standing here again in 2021,” said Redvers. “The reviews his first crop of Northern Hemisphere foals are receiving match our expectations and I’m really looking forward to seeing his first commercial offerings at the end of the month.”

Havana Gold (GB), whose biggest crop of over 140 yearlings goes into training next year, is available for £7,500, while G1 Sussex S. winner Lightning Spear (GB) will stand for £5,000.

Kameko was the fastest ever winner of the 2,000 Guineas and Qatar Racing's third European Gr.1 Classic winner after Simple Verse and Just The Judge. He was also an impressive winner of the Gr.1 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes at two and successfully gave weight to world-class older horses in the Gr.2 Joel Stakes.

The son of Kitten's Joy – the same sire as Qatar Racing's late world champion Roaring Lion – joins Zoustar, Champion First-, Second- and Third-Season Sire in Australia, Gr.1-winning sire Havana Gold and champion older miler Lightning Spear at Tweenhills for the 2021 breeding season.

Looking back on Kameko's success, Sheikh Fahad Al-Thani, Chairman of Qatar Racing, said: “My brothers and I are delighted to own another superstar in Kameko, whose record-breaking two- and three-year-old campaigns will live long in our memory. We cannot wait to unveil him to breeders.”

Trainer Andrew Balding added: “Kameko is without doubt the best horse I've trained. He has all the attributes of a top-class miler and is a striking horse to look at. I feel very honored to have had the opportunity to train a horse of such class.”

Kameko was a first British Classic winner for jockey Oisin Murphy, who said: “I felt from the very beginning that this could be a special horse. He's the perfect model – he has size, durability and a great character. To ride, he has super balance, a great turn of foot and a good mind – you can put him anywhere in a race. He's a machine.”

Kameko will run at the Breeders' Cup and on his return will be paraded for breeders, along with other Tweenhills stallions, at Longholes Stud in Newmarket during the Tattersalls December Mare Sale. His 2021 stud fee and syndication plans will be announced in due course.
