Race caller and TVG analyst Larry Collmus, whose distinguished career includes a 20-year stint as Monmouth Park's track announcer, has been named the winner of the 2023 Bill Handleman Award for outstanding coverage of last year's GI TVG.com Haskell S.

First presented in 2012, the Handleman Award honors the late Bill Handleman, one of New Jersey's top sportswriters for nearly three decades for the Asbury Park Press. Handleman, a fixture at Monmouth Park and a passionate chronicler of the sport, died in June of 2010 at the age of 62.

Collmus, 56, has served as the announcer for NBC Sports' coverage of the Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup since 2011 and is currently the on-site host for TVG (Fan Duel) during live racing days at Monmouth Park.

“For all of the national acclaim Larry Collmus has received for his outstanding career, he remains closely associated with Monmouth Park and the Haskell S.,” said Dennis Drazin, Chairman and CEO of Darby Development LLC, the operators of Monmouth Park. “We're pleased to honor him with the Handleman Award for his work last year and throughout the years on Haskell day.”

Collmus, who started his career as the track announcer at Bowie in Maryland in 1985 at the age of 18, has served as the race caller at Birmingham Turf Club, Golden Gate, Suffolk Downs, Monmouth Park, Churchill Downs, for NYRA tracks and at Del Mar. He was Monmouth Park's race caller from 1994-2014.

His call for NBC Sports of this year's Haskell will be his 23rd for Monmouth Park's most prestigious race–and first since Triple Crown winner American Pharoah won the race in 2015.

Ken Rudulph, who ignited a Twitter firestorm with comments about horse racing on Monday, May 15, has apparently been dismissed from his role at the company, according to a FanDuel TV spokesperson.

“Mr. Rudulph is no longer with FanDuel TV,” the spokesman said, indicating that that would be the only statement made.

Rudulph was suspended from his duties two days after the he posted the Tweet, which read: “Horse racing needs to stop pretending and just be what it is. It's a great combo of WWE/reality TV/sports with a healthy dose of BS on the side. It's a great game. Cheating is part of it. Death is part of it. Losing is part of it. Winning makes it all worthwhile.” On the heels of the equine fatalities at Churchill Downs, many objected to the comments, criticisms that Rudulph initially deflected.

“Oh they absolutely knew what I was saying,” he said. “They also saw a reason to go “there”, so they went there. It's all part of the process. I expect it and I accept it.” It was unclear where “there” was.

The following day, he deleted the Tweet and tried to walk it back. “Monday evening, I made a mistake and used a very poor choice of words to make what I hoped would be a compelling thought regarding horse racing. I apologize to my colleagues and the industry for my lack of proper forethought. I truly felt you all would have the open dialogue with me. I will find a better way in the future. At NO POINT am I advocating for or supporting horse fatalities. I don't even know how that became part of this. I'm trying to have a conversation about the issues in this industry, and how we deal with them on a daily basis. This confusion reminds me why we can't have these conversations. But I'm not going to stop trying.”

Last week, Rudulph's Twitter status was changed to “TV News Anchor/Show Host/Sports Betting Analyst formerly with @Fandueltv.”

Reached by the TDN, Rudulph said he had no comment on the news. Tuesday morning, he Tweeted, “No more going backward. Let's just keep it moving. Carry the Hell on.”

After reviewing comments made on Twitter by FanDuel TV host Ken Rudulph, his employers have said that “Mr. Rudulph will not be appearing on FanDuel TV” pending a full investigation of the matter.

The news was first reported by the Paulick Report Wednesday night.

Monday, Rudulph Tweeted: “Horse racing needs to stop pretending and just be what it is. It's a great combo of WWE/reality TV/sports with a healthy dose of BS on the side. It's a great game. Cheating is part of it. Death is part of it. Losing is part of it. Winning makes it all worthwhile.”

The outcry over Rudulph's cavalier comments about equine deaths was immediate, and sustained, but Rudulph initially doubled down, at least on Monday.

When someone named Dj Big C Tweeted back, “The fact that people couldn't comprehend what you were saying says a lot about HRT.”

Replied Rudulph, “Oh they absolutely knew what I was saying. They also saw a reason to go “there”, so they went there. It's all part of the process. I expect it and I accept it.”

Tuesday, he deleted the Tweet and tried to walk it back.

No it's pretty clear with this pic.twitter.com/4KeAHzJFZB

— Pacemakestherace (@WildWildgreen18) May 16, 2023

The apology didn't go down well with everyone.

“You didn't make a mistake,” Tweeted Diana Baker. “You told us what you really thought. It's infuriating and despicable. You should be fired and never work in this business again. NO horse death is acceptable. We all have to do better for the horses we rely upon. SHAME ON YOU.”

Writer Jay Hovdey called it “a deeply cynical take from someone who represents a pure gambling point of view.”

FanDuel appeared to agree. Wednesday, they wrote, “Recently, FanDuel TV host Ken Rudulph made disappointing comments online about the integrity of horse racing, as well as the safety and welfare of its participants. As the market leader in legal sports wagering, FanDuel takes the issues of sports integrity and track safety very seriously, and we disagree in the strongest terms with the sentiments expressed by Mr. Rudulph. Fanduel Strongly supports equine safety reforms, including our longstanding support of equine retirement and aftercare programs as well as organizations focused on the heath and safety of jockeys. We also work in close partnership with international and North American-based sports integrity monitoring agencies to identify any potentially illicit activity occurring within our racing or sportsbook platforms. Pending a full review of this matter, Mr. Rudulph will not be appearing on FanDuel TV.”

Hall of Fame riders Sandy Hawley, Chris McCarron, Mike Smith and John Velazquez, among many others, will team with FanDuel TV, the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA), Keeneland and Santa Anita on Sunday, Apr. 23rd for the fifth annual telethon to raise money for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), presented by Lane's End.

The event will be broadcast on both FanDuel TV and America's Day at the Races in collaboration with NYRA and FOX Sports as well as livestreamed. Fans can participate by calling 1-844-884-7353 between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. ET or can click here to donate directly. Callers who give via the telethon will be entered in a drawing to win assorted autographed memorabilia, which will take place each hour.

“We are proud of the way this event has grown each year and that is largely due to the collaborative efforts from the Guild and our partners at Santa Anita, Keeneland, NYRA and FOX Sports,” said FanDuel's Mike Joyce who also serves on the Board of Directors of the PDJF. “Every single day, jockeys assume incredible risk. This event raises important funding and showcases the work that the PDJF does to support these athletes.”

The 2022 edition raised $418,300 to support jockeys who have suffered serious on-track injuries, which was added to $1.2 million in support of the PDJF since the inaugural telethon in 2018.

Simon Bray has pledged to match all donations up to $500 made to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance's Holiday Giving Campaign Dec. 28.

“The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is the only organization to accredit and distribute funds to over 81 aftercare programs across the U.S.,” said Bray, a former trainer and currently an analyst for TVG, now FanDuel Racing. “The TAA accreditation is the gold standard for making sure retired racehorses have the care and life after the racetrack they so deserve. I am happy to help in a very small way to make sure that this important work continues. Please join me in donating.”

TAA's Holiday Giving Campaign, which began Nov. 29, concludes New Year's Eve. For more information, visit ThoroughbredAftercare.org/HolidayCampaign or text DONATE to 56651.

FanDuel announced that its customers can access both parimutuel wagering on horse racing and traditional sports book wagering with a single account after a successful soft launch last week. FanDuel Sportsbook becomes the first to offer this feature, as users will be able to wager on and stream racing coverage from FanDuel TV and other related content. In addition to live horse racing, FanDuel Sportsbook customers will also be able to wager on the Kentucky Derby for the first time through the integrated platform in 2023.

Prior to this innovation, sportsbook customers were required to open a separate account and wallet for parimutuel wagering on horse racing at FanDuel Racing or TVG.com. The merged wallet/single account feature is currently available for FanDuel customers in New York, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, West Virginia, Wyoming, Michigan, Colorado, and Virginia. FanDuel plans to expand it to additional states in 2023. Earlier this year, the FanDuel launched FanDuel TV, which re-branded the TVG network.

Peter Redekop's And Tell Me Nolies paid tribute to her late champion sire Arrogate Saturday, nailing heavy favorite and 'TDN Rising Star' Home Cooking (Honor Code) on the line to take the GI Del Mar Debutante S.

Given a 9-1 chance with Home Cooking pounded down to 3-5, And Tell Me No Lies shuffled a bit at the start as her neighbors on each side broke in her direction, but she did not falter and moved up to establish position as the chalk took control, clocking a :22.01 first quarter. One off the fence in fifth, she kept the favorite within her sights as the half went in a swift :44.36. And Tell Me Nolies ranged up two wide on the far turn as Home Cooking entered the stretch on a clear lead. The Bob Baffert runner grew a bit leg weary in the final strides and And Tell Me Nolies found just enough to push past her late for a narrow upset in a tight photo finish. Ice Dancing (Frosted) completed the trifecta.

“I told Peter [Miller] that I had confidence in this filly right from the start,” said winning rider Ramon Vasquez. “I'm glad he was loyal to me and let me ride her in this one. She was a runner all the way today. And I knew I was the winner at the wire. This is my first Grade I win. It is so amazing. I want to thank Peter for giving me this chance. This is amazing.”

“I didn't see a ton of speed on the form,” Miller said. “We were drawn inside. I think he [Vasquez] wanted to get position, which he did. I did like some of the moves he made. At the five-eighths pole when he beat Cedillo ([Vegas Magic] to the spot, and then when he got her outside around the two-and-a-half furlong pole, I felt really good.”

A $70,000 KEESEP acquisition by D.J. Stable, And Tell Me Nolies brought $230,000 from agent Bryan Anderson at OBS April after breezing in :10 flat. Rallying for fourth behind Satin Doll (Congrats)–who was scratched from this event–when unveiled in a five-panel event at this oval July 23, she broke through next out with a narrow graduation going 6 1/2 furlongs over this strip Aug. 14. Ice Dancing finished third that day.

Pedigree Notes:

And Tell Me Nolies is the second Grade I/graded winner for her late sire Arrogate. She hails from his second of three crops and his other graded scorer comes from his first in this year's GI Kentucky Oaks victress Secret Oath. They are two of the Eclipse winners four black-type scorers. Breeder Lara Run acquired GSW & GISP Be Fair for $50,000 at the 2018 KEENOV sale in foal to Practical Joke and sold her to Jim Ballinger in foal to super sire Gun Runner for $35,000 at the OBSWIN sale. The resulting foal is a now-yearling colt, who brought $150,000 from McMahon & Hill Bloodstock at Keeneland November last term. The half-sister to GISW Macho Again (Macho Uno) failed to get in foal to The Big Beast for 2022, but was bred to Mo Town this spring.

Edited Press Release

Churchill Downs Incorporated has entered into a multi-year agreement with FanDuel Group involving different facets of FanDuel's sports wagering, advance deposit wagering and television business.

Under the Agreement, CDI will provide certain technology and services to enable FanDuel's customers to place pari-mutuel wagers on horse racing via FanDuel's sports wagering and ADW platforms. CDI will also authorize wagering on CDI's owned or controlled horse racing content via FanDuel's platforms in the United States and grant FanDuel certain television and media rights to broadcast CDI-owned racing content on FanDuel's television network(s). In addition, the Agreement provides FanDuel non-exclusive Kentucky Derby sponsorship rights within the sports wagering category.

Beginning in January 2023, FanDuel will pay for CDI technology and services provided by United Tote Company to facilitate pari-mutuel wagering on FanDuel's platforms in the United States, including FanDuel Sportsbook and TVG. As previously announced, CDI has entered into an agreement to sell 49% of United Tote to New York Racing Association (NYRA) in a transaction that is expected to close by the end of 2022.

CDI will provide FanDuel wagering rights to horse racing content owned or controlled by CDI, including the Kentucky Derby, and will receive customary content fees when FanDuel accepts wagers on CDI-owned content. FanDuel will also receive exclusive television rights to the racing content of all CDI Thoroughbred racetracks, including Churchill Downs, once its existing non-Derby media rights deal expires in 2023. The Agreement excludes certain specified racing content, including Kentucky Derby Week.

As part of the Agreement, FanDuel will also receive a non-exclusive sponsorship of the Kentucky Derby in the sports wagering category beginning in 2023 in exchange for an annual sponsorship fee.
