Coolmore's late super sire, Galileo, added his sixth Breeders' Cup winner with Tuesday just last year. He is a joint second by winners, but stands alone as the leading Breeders' Cup sire by money won with nearly $16 million in purses–more than $4.5 million more than his closest pursuer.

Tuesday, who also captured the G1 Cazoo Oaks in 2022 and now holds the 1 3/16-mile course record at Keeneland after her Breeders' Cup win, was retired shortly after the race and bred to Into Mischief this spring.

“She was such a tough, consistent race filly–like all of the Galileos are,” said Ashford's Dermot Ryan. “She was expertly campaigned by Aidan and his team to win the Oaks on her 3-year-old birthday and to defeat a top-class field containing six Grade I winners and a Canadian Classic winner at the Breeders' Cup gave her owners/breeders and the whole team at Coolmore such a thrill.”

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program's early estimate of funds raised during its Breeders' Cup Pledge will be more than $140,000, it was announced Monday. This year's total was driven by a record nine horses with pledging connections–Wonder Wheel, Meditate (Ire), Forte, Victoria Road (Ire), Goodnight Olive, Caravel, Tuesday (Ire), Malathaat and Flightline–winning their races on Future Stars Friday and Championship Saturday.

Additional pledges are still coming in and final donations are still being tallied. Now in its 13th year, the Pledge has raised more than $1 million, with 100% of funds going directly to support the program's rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming efforts, which serves more than 500 horses a year.

“Pledging a portion of my Breeders Cup winnings to New Vocations is the very least that I can do as a horse owner,” said Jay Hanley of Team Hanley. “In our sport, horses–in this particular case for me Goodnight Olive–are the stars of the show. They are the ones at risk, laying it on the line every day for our enjoyment. It is absolutely our responsibility to ensure that our horses are properly cared for after their racing career is over.”

“I applaud the tireless efforts of Anna Ford and her staff at New Vocations and I look forward to supporting them for the rest of my life,” he added. “They are doing the most important work of anyone in the industry.”

In addition to Team Hanley, winning connections include D.J. Stable and the Green Family (Wonder Wheel); Coolmore and Partners (Meditate, Victoria Road and Tuesday); Todd Pletcher and Repole Stable (Forte); Madaket Stables (Caravel); Todd Pletcher (Malathaat); and West Point Thoroughbreds and Siena Farm (Flightline).

This year's pledge participants also include Bass Racing, Bob Baffert, Paul Braverman, Chad Brown, Cannon Thoroughbreds, CHC Inc., Cheyenne Stables, Michael Dubb, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, John D. Gunther, Fred and Debbie Kuntzman, Michael McCarthy, H. Graham Motion, Gatsas Stables, Harrell Ventures, Joe R. Peacock, Jr., LNJ Foxwoods, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, J. Kirk and Judy Robison, Rodeo Creek Racing, Richard Schermerhorn, SF Racing, Spendthrift Farm, Starlight Racing, Stonestreet Stables, Twin Creeks Racing Stables, Wertheimer et Frere and WinStar Farm.

“We are very grateful for the overwhelming support from the owners and trainers who choose to join the Pledge this year,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Program Thoroughbred Program Director. “With over 60 horses with connections pledging this year, the campaign raises awareness and much-needed funds to continue our mission and grow our aftercare efforts.”

LEXINGTON, KY — There are few partnerships that have been as productive or have been firing more live ammunition during the Breeders' Cup thus far than the Coolmore group, Aidan O'Brien and jockey Ryan Moore. Following a pair of championship victories Friday, the triumvirate came right back on Breeders' Cup Saturday to annex the GI Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf with the impeccably bred Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who closed with a flourish to best dual Grade I winner In Italian (Dubawi {Ire}).

The victory is the first in the race for O'Brien, who now has 16 World Championship victories, and the second for Moore, who won the 2013 running aboard Dank (GB). With Saturday's victory, Moore has 12 Breeders' Cup wins.

It was clear that Coolmore meant business in this year's renewal of the 1 3/16th race, also offering up G1 Prix Saint Alary scorer Above The Curve (American Pharoah), trained by O'Brien's son Joseph, and the diminutive Toy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), runner-up in this season's G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks for the elder O'Brien. The most fancied of the trio at 4-1, Tuesday was being reunited with Moore, who had been aboard for her G1 Cazoo Oaks victory in June, but was absent for her two latest off-the-board finishes in Group 1 company in France earlier this fall. Taking much of the play at the windows at 5-2, however, was Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}), victorious in both the G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly and Goodwood's G1 Nassau S. and narrowly beaten in second most recently in the Oct. 2 G1 Prix de l'Opera.

Tuesday was shuffled back into seventh as In Italian assumed her customary place at the head of affairs through a sharp opening quarter in :22.82 before slowing things down a hair to a more sensible :46.38 half. With In Italian still moving comfortably up front, Tuesday began to pick up the tempo exiting that backstretch. With a pair of longshots briefly looming as the pacesetter turned for home, Tuesday cut into the leader's diminishing advantage, collared her in the final sixteenth and was a length clear at the wire. 'TDN Rising Star' Lady Speightspeare (Speightstown), who challenged In Italian at the head of the stretch, finished a half-length back of In Italian in third and two lengths in front of the favored Nashwa.

“The race was very straight forward,” said Moore. “Pace was strong and even. She was in a good rhythm. I was always confident and finished up very well. Aidan [O'Brien] had her in an unbelievable place today. The horse has been magnificent and has been most of year. She has bounced back.”

Following her Oaks victory, the daughter of dual Group 1 winning Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) was fourth in the G1 Irish Derby at the Curragh before getting a brief freshening. A length back of subsequent Arc heroine Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in G1 Yorkshire Oaks Aug. 18, Tuesday ran fourth in the G1 Prix Vermeille before finishing sixth in the Prix de l'Opera.

“It's incredible for everyone that's involved in the whole place,” said O'Brien. “She's a filly that won the [Epsom] Oaks when she was barely three and we were conscious of that, so we let her dally through the rest of the year. We had our eye on this race for her. She's an amazing filly from an unbelievable pedigree as well. Totally 100% homebred which makes this incredible and a privilege for us. Ryan [Moore] gave her a stunning ride.”

As for the beaten favorite, trainer John Gosden explained, “Obviously, we were a little slow way from the gate, and lost the benefit of our post position. We got a little bit too far back on what is a fast track with a tailwind. Then pinned down on the inside, couldn't get out. Finally got out and the race was over but she was running on very well there. It would be sharp enough for her, this distance. She's a grand filly and we'll be looking at next year with her.”

Pedigree Note:
Tuesday, a Coolmore homebred, offers a pedigree is as good as anything that can be found in racing. By pre-eminent international sire Galileo, the sophomore filly is a daughter of English Highweight Lillie Langtry, winner of the 2010 G1 Coronation S. and GI Matron S. Also campaigned by Coolmore, Lillie Langtry has proven prolific as a broodmare, having produced highweight middle distance mare and dual Group 1 winner Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G1 Irish 1000 Guineas victress Empress Josephine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Group 3 scorer Kissed By Angels (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Her last reported foal is a juvenile full sister to Tuesday named Delightful (Ire).

Following a quiet few days in the aftermath of Ascot and Chantilly, things get moving again on Saturday with The Curragh staging one of the most interesting renewals of the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby for some time. A race that has from time to time in recent years been under the shadow of the European Pattern Committee's guillotine has pulled a trick out of the hat this year to ensure it keeps its exalted status for the immediate future at least.

Aidan O'Brien has come to tick off winners of this Classic with metronomic efficiency and it is that which has played a part-role in discouraging potential raiders, but connections of Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) are thankfully unwilling to allow historical precedent to sway them from the challenge. Adding an exotic flavour to this edition, the cream of the Rosegreen colts have been left at home with the baton passed to the Oaks heroine Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Just as Balanchine (Storm Bird) conquered the Derby runner-up King's Theatre (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) the last time this scenario came about in 1994, and her predecessor Salsabil (GB) (Sadler's Wells) disposed of the Blue Riband hero Quest For Fame (GB) (Rainbow Quest) four years earlier, so Tuesday looks to quash the colts as her stable goes leftfield in its undimmed quest for Classic glory.

There's Always A First Time

Aidan O'Brien could write the book on how to win the Irish Derby as he chases success number 15, but there is always new ground to break at Rosegreen, and 2022 sees the year that he mixes things up. This is the Classic in which the runaway pacemaker Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) cut loose three years ago, but there will be no surprise outcome supplied by the stable this time, with the filly due to start at short odds and probably as favourite. Tuesday's success in the June 3 Epsom Classic represents strong form and, while there is an argument that Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) was unlucky, there was genuine merit in the winner's performance from a compromising draw in one. Tuesday has surprised her trainer all year and has forced her way into this unique situation with her relentless progress both in training and racing.

“At one time, we didn't think she'd make the Guineas, but every week she gets stronger and stronger and we had planned to give her a break after the Oaks, so it's an unusual thing but maybe it's because she's so young,” O'Brien said of the irrepressible daughter of Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Unlike the trainer, remarkably Ryan Moore has yet to ride the winner of this Classic and will have to be at his tactical best to get Tuesday into a position where she can deliver her dynamite surge. That is no easy task, as he is unconvinced that his mount needs a true stamina test.

“She did exceptionally well to win a strong Oaks last time, even if she probably didn't see out the trip fully,” he said in his Betfair blog.

Keane And Eager

It is clear why Tuesday, who showed with placings in the 1000 Guineas and the Irish equivalent and with fast splits in the Oaks that she possesses the kind of pace that is dangerous in these types of tests, has no pacemaker alongside her due to the fact that she would thrive if this becomes a test of speed. Whether that happens probably depends on Colin Keane, who has been called up to steer Juddmonte's Derby third Westover around this terrain he has come to dominate as his country's undisputed leading rider. Unlike Tuesday, the colt that may turn out to be the best that Ralph Beckett has trained is more in the freight train mold at a mile and a half and the kind of remorseless galloper well fitted to The Curragh.

“When you look back at the replay of the Derby, he was the horse that caught your eye and usually the Epsom form holds up in the Curragh. A more galloping track might suit him and he looks like a very straightforward horse,” his rider said.

Putting the Record Straight

Westover's trouble in running in Epsom's home straight is well-documented, but quite how much that momentum disturbance affected the result of the Blue Riband is an unknown. There is no doubt that it had consequences and adjustments for the G3 Sandown Classic Trial winner's ill fortune there put him close to Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), so the ball is in his and Keane's court on an exciting day for Juddmonte who have not been represented in this since 1996.

That year saw the Derby runner-up Dushyantor (Sadler's Wells) finish a disappointing fourth as the 5-4 favourite, three years on from the operation's only winner Commander In Chief (GB) (Dancing Brave).

“He would definitely be entitled to improve a bit and it's great the family are letting us bring him over to Ireland,” Juddmonte's Barry Mahon said. “There's a big operation here and for all the staff here who looked after him when he was a yearling and a weanling and broke him in and started riding him before he went over to Ralph Beckett's, they're all excited too.”

A Steep Climb

Despite his obvious potential, there is a sense that Flaxman Holdings' imposing Piz Badile (Ire) (Ulysses {Ire}) could be one for next year and the G3 Ballysax S. winner's unplaced effort in the Derby shows he is up against it even if he is back on a track that should prove more suitable.

One who is still unexposed is Normandie Stud's Listed Cocked Hat S. scorer Lionel (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), but that form is well short of the Epsom standard and he may need further than this mile and a half with his family featuring Duncan (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who dead-heated in the 2011 Irish St Leger here. Since the aforementioned Commander In Chief in 1993, there have been only three British-trained winners showing how hard it is to wrest the prize from the home-trained contingent. Lionel's trainer David Menuisier is habitually optimistic, however.

“In my heart he always was one of the leading contenders, a lot of things are going his way so let's hope for a truly run race and the best horse will win.”

Blackbeard Is Back

Away from the Irish Derby, the G2 GAIN Railway S. is the next best thing on Saturday and Ballydoyle supply another workaholic in Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never), the first to represent the G2 Coventry S. form. Only fourth and beaten some way out as the 5-2 favourite for that juvenile feature of the Royal meeting, the Listed First Flier S. and G3 Marble Hill S. winner may have had an excuse according to Aidan O'Brien.

“He maybe found the travel a bit funny and was a bit uneasy with it all,” he suggested on Friday. Ryan Moore added in his Betfair blog, “I'd be inclined to think that was a very strong Coventry this year, so his fourth there was a very good effort.”

A short-head second to Blackbeard in the First Flier, Amo Racing's Crispy Cat (GB) (Ardad {Ire}) is also asked to back up after Royal Ascot where he was the chief sufferer of the much-discussed interference caused by The Ridler (GB) (Brazen Beau {Aus}) in the Norfolk.

Best Of The Rest

Also at The Curragh, the 10-furlong G3 ARM Holding International S. sees last year's Irish 2000 Guineas hero Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) look for a first win since that highlight as he takes on 'TDN Rising Star' Duke de Sessa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and Ballydoyle's Aikhal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who was thought worthy of a place in last Tuesday's G1 St James's Palace S. Also in that Royal Ascot feature was another 'TDN Rising Star' in Wexford Native (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and, while he was unable to do himself justice there, is likewise out quickly in the card's Listed Dubai Duty Free Celebration S. over a mile.

In Newcastle's G3 Pertemps Network Chipchase S., St Albans Bloodstock's exciting 3-year-old filly Sense of Duty (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) holds strong claims following her defeat of the top-class Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) and subsequent listed scorer Benefit (GB) (Acclamation {GB}) in Haydock's Listed Cecil Frail S. May 20. At Newmarket, all eyes will be on Westerberg's exciting Minnetonka (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) in a hot-looking Listed Maureen Brittain Memorial Empress Fillies' S. following her seven-length debut win at Salisbury June 12.

As Hollie Doyle so adeptly showed on Sunday, women can easily taken on men in racing, but it is a rare thing for a filly to tackle the colts in a Classic. There have however, been some notable successes, and when Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) lines up for Saturday's Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby she will be following in the hoofprints of her fellow Oaks winners, Salsabil (Ire) and Balanchine, who bounced from victory at Epsom to beating the boys on the Curragh.

Willie Carson was aboard the John Dunlop-trained Salsabil in 1990 when she got the better of that year's Derby winner Quest For Fame, among others, in cruising to success in the Irish Derby for her third Classic victory of the season. After winning the 1,000 Guineas then the Oaks, she became the first filly since Gallinaria (Ire) in 1900 to land the Irish Derby, and the first 1,000 Guineas and Oaks winner to have done so.

“The decision to run was Sheikh Hamdan's,” says Carson, casting his mind back more than three decades to two brilliant seasons for Salsabil. Bought by the sheikh from her breeder Pat O'Kelly, the daughter of Sadler's Wells was out of Kilcarn Stud's great matriarch Flame Of Tara (GB) (Artaius), who the year after she foaled Salsabil produced Marju (Ire) (Last Tycoon {Ire}), winner of the St James's Palace S. and runner-up to Generous (Ire) in the Derby. Among the mare's 11 winners were six black-type performers.

“I don't think John Dunlop would have had the inclination to run her in the Irish Derby. I remember that he wanted to go for the King George but Sheikh Hamdan said Irish Derby.”

Carson, who holds the unique distinction of having won the 200th Derby in England as a jockey on Troy (GB) and the 200th Derby in Ireland as a breeder with Jack Hobbs (GB), continues, “It was the easiest Classic winner I ever rode. I don't think I hit her with a stick, it was just hands and heels and she won so easily.

“Salsabil was a marvellous filly, she was in the top three fillies I rode. Sadly, Sheikh Hamdan didn't get anything as good out of her as she was herself. She was by the great Sadler's Wells from a really good family. Pat O'Kelly was breeding lots of good horses at that time.”

Certainly, Salsabil had everything in her favour on paper going into the Irish Derby, and she was also able to draw upon the excellent form of the man on her back.

“I remember I rode 22 winners that week,” he says. “I was just on fire that week and I had six winners the day before on Northumberland Plate day. It was the best period of my riding career.”

Asked for his opinion of Tuesday being supplemented for the Irish Derby, he adds, “I suppose I was surprised but now they've done it I can see why they've done it. I wasn't surprised when Salsabil was entered; I was only the jockey and I did what I was told.”

Carson, whose Classic-winning exploits extend to having bred and ridden Minster Son (Ire) to glory in the St Leger of 1988, has extra reason to be interested in the career of Tuesday. At home in the paddocks of his Minster Stud is a recently acquired mare named Patronising (GB), who is a half-sister to Tuesday's dam Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and shares her sire Galileo.

He says of Tuesday, “When she ran third in the Guineas she looked an out-and-out Oaks winner. Third, running on, in the Guineas is a great thing to be doing. Obviously Emily Upjohn (GB) looked unlucky in the Oaks and she might be slightly better than Tuesday, but Tuesday also didn't have the best of starts in the Oaks.

“I'll be shouting for her. The form says she really only has Westover (GB) to beat.”

Aidan O'Brien has supplemented Cazoo Oaks winner Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) for the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh on Saturday.

Tuesday will be ridden by Ryan Moore as she bids to become the third horse to win the Oaks and the Irish Derby, following on from Salsabil (GB) (Sadler's Wells) in 1990 and Balanchine (Storm Bird {Can}) four years later.

O'Brien, a record-breaking 14-time winner of the Irish Derby, has also left Anchorage (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Temple Of Artemis (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the race and, speaking to TDN Europe, revealed that Tuesday has improved again since Epsom.

He said, “From the very start of the year, Tuesday has progressed with every week. Saying it is one thing but doing it is another and she seems to be still progressing, which is unbelievable. She came out of the Oaks well and we're very happy with her. She's improving all the time.”

O'Brien added, “We've left in a few others–Anchorage, Changingoftheguard, Stone Age and Temple Of Artemis–and they are all possibles but by no means definites.”

Derby third Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}), trained by Ralph Beckett, heads the market at odds of 11-8 and will be partnered by the three-times Irish champion jockey Colin Keane, who takes over from Rob Hornby. The British-trained challenge also includes David Menuisier's Lionel (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

Donnacha and Joseph O'Brien are well represented, with Piz Badile (Ire) (Ulysses {Ire}) set to run for the younger sibling and Hannibal Barca (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), winner of the G3 Heider Family Stables Gallinule S. at the Curragh on his first start in Ireland last month, Buckaroo (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and Vega Magnifico (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) possible runners for his brother.

Paddy Twomey's French Claim (Fr) (French Fifteen {Fr}) remains in contention along with Jim Bolger's Boundless Ocean (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Manu Et Corde (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), the Dermot Weld-trained Duke De Sessa (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and Andy Oliver's Glory Daze (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}).

It hasn't been done in over 25 years, but Cazoo Oaks heroine Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) could bid to become the first filly since Balanchine (Storm Bird {Can}) in 1994 to win the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby on Saturday, her trainer Aidan O'Brien has revealed.

Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), who many believed was the ace in O'Brien's three-year-old pack, was sidelined shortly after finishing third in the 2000 Guineas and, after drawing a blank in the Derby, the master of Ballydoyle admitted that he may yet turn to the brilliant Oaks winner Tuesday in his bid to win the Irish Derby for a whopping 15th time.

A decision will be made for definite on Tuesday, according to O'Brien, who said, “It's possible we could supplement Tuesday and we'll decide in the morning.”

Last week's G2 King Edward VII S. winner Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) performed best of the O'Brien-trained colts in the Derby but never landed a blow on the winner Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) back in fifth.

Stablemate Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), sent off 7-2 and ridden by Ryan Moore at Epsom, could only manage sixth, yet the market suggests he is the number one Irish Derby hope for Ballydoyle at odds of 9-2.

The Ralph Beckett-trained Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}), an unlucky third in the Derby, is a 5-4 favourite to gain compensation in Saturday's Curragh showpiece.

O'Brien enjoyed another successful Royal Ascot last week, once again being crowned leading trainer at the meeting over the five days, which saw him land his 900th Group or Graded race. He also moved within one of Sir Michael Stoute as the leading trainer at the fixture with his 81st winner.

Tuesday's Oaks form also took a boost on Sunday when Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}), third at Epsom, stormed to French Oaks glory at Chantilly.

It was a pretty quiet racing week here, so this installment of snippets is a little European-centric. We hope you find it interesting.

The Mind Boggles…

Tuesday's win in the G1 Cazoo Oaks at Epsom gave Aidan O'Brien a record 41st British Classic winner, including 10 wins in the Oaks. Tuesday was also the 94th Group 1 winner for her sire, Galileo and the second Oaks heroine and third Classic winner for her dam, Lillie Langtry (following Minding and Empress Josephine). Coolmore/Ballydoyle's stats never cease to amaze.

Pletch Being Pletch…

The Todd Pletcher-trained Emmanuel is one of 51 Northern Hemisphere graded/group winners (106 overall) for the ever-present international powerhouse More Than Ready. Pletcher, of course, also trained More Than Ready to victory in the GI King's Bishop at Saratoga, 22 years ago!

Caveat Emptor?…

Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock picked up the G1 Cazoo Derby winner, Desert Crown, for 280,000gns ($368,734 using today's exchange rate) at Tattersalls Book 2 for owner Saeed Suhail. His breeder, Strawberry Fields Stud, had actually promoted the son of Nathaniel as a future Classic winner when selling him as a yearling in 2020. It pays to keep an eye on those TDN ads!

100 Years And Counting…

One hundred years on from the late Aga Khan III's initial foray into European racing, the internationally-renowned operation celebrated a Classic victory Sunday as Vadeni dominated the G1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) at Chantilly. It was also a first Group 1 victory for Coolmore stallion Churchill, from his first crop, highlighting the Aga Khan's belief in using the most suitable stallion for each individual mating, regardless of where they stand.

The Rising Star Machine…

Andiamo a Firenze was named the latest 'TDN Rising Star', and is the 23rd son/daughter of Speightstown to claim that honor. Echo Town, Charlatan, Sharing, and Munnings are also all on that particular roll of honor for WinStar's finest.

The post TDN Snippets: Week of May 30-June 5 appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.

With Britain en fete in the midst of the Platinum Jubilee festivities, the Oaks and Derby fell slap-bang in the middle of a four-day bank holiday and, despite the absence of Her Majesty the Queen at Epsom, the meeting still offered much cause for celebration.

Sir Michael Stoute is never one to blow his own horn, though he is often heard humming on Newmarket Heath while watching his horses work. And as one of British racing's senior trainers, on the royal roster to boot, he was a most fitting winning trainer for the Cazoo Derby with Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), even though, in typically modest fashion, he was quick to refer to the Derby he had 'lost' for The Queen when her Carlton House finished third in 2011.

Never mind that, in winning the Derby for the sixth time, he also became, at the age of 76, the oldest trainer to have done so, taking that particular record from former Newmarket trainer Mat Dawson, who landed the race in 1895, when he was 75, with Sir Visto.

In Richard Kingscote, Stoute appears to have found the perfect jockey for his stable, which previously had such a successful association with the similarly taciturn Ryan Moore. Saturday was a huge day for 35-year-old Kingscote, winning the Derby for the first time on only his second ride in the race, but he enjoyed the moment and accepted the plaudits with endearing humility and complete absence of hoopla.

Interviewed the following morning on Luck On Sunday he was asked how he and Stoute's relationship is developing, replying with a straight-bat delivery of which the trainer would have approved enormously.

“Well, neither of us like to talk much,” he said in deadpan fashion.

It would appear that neither trainer nor jockey will need to do much talking when they have a horse who does that for them. Certainly the stable whispers had grown ahead of the Dante, and Stoute's quiet confidence before and since York was fully vindicated on the most prestigious strip of turf of them all at Epsom.

Desert Crown, with just three impeccable runs to his name, is now as short as 3/1 favourite for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in October. For a trainer so adept with progressive middle-distance horses it seems almost remiss that Stoute has won the Arc just once, in 2010. But when he did, it was with his most recent Derby winner before Saturday, Workforce (GB). That great horse's sire King's Best had also been resident at Stoute's Freemason Lodge stable, and won the 2,000 Guineas for Desert Crown's owner Saeed Suhail. Underlining the trainer's versatility is the fact that the most recent top-class performer he has had for Suhail was the sprinter Dream Of Dreams (Ire) (Dream Ahead), winner of the last year's G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot.

Nathaniel the Elite

Nathaniel (Ire) entered elite company on Saturday in joining the group of stallions to have sired a Derby and an Oaks winner. Of course his own sire Galileo (Ire) is a fully paid-up member of this group, as are two of his other sons, fellow Derby winner New Approach (GB), sire of Masar (Ire) and Talent (GB), and Frankel (GB), with Adayar (Ire) and Anapurna (GB) to his credit. Galileo's half-brother Sea The Stars (Ire) is also part of this set, courtesy of Harzand (Ire) and Taghrooda (GB), and he enhanced his Epsom roll of honour when Hukum (GB) won Friday's G1 Coronation Cup.

But let's not forget some mighty mares. On Friday at Epsom, both Group 1 winners already had Group 1-winning full-siblings. Hukum, handing his trainer Owen Burrows a first top-level win, is the brother of Baaeed (GB), who is arguably the most exciting horse in training at the moment. Their Listed-winning dam Aghareed provides what appears to be a pretty magical cross for Sea The Stars with Kingmambo, and is herself a daughter of the dual Grade I winner Lahudood (GB) Singspiel {Ire}). Notably, her current 2-year-old, Naqeeb (GB), is by Nathaniel and he will be heading into training with William Haggas. And in Jubilee year it was fitting that the Coronation Cup winner emanated from a family initially developed by the Royal Studs.

Similarly brimming in talent is the family of Oaks winner Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). She became the third Classic winner for her dual Group 1-winning dam Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) after Minding (Ire) and Empress Josephine (Ire).

Thinking of Josh

Amid all the jubilation on Friday, and a fourth win in the Oaks for Ballydoyle's number one jockey with Tuesday, thoughts also turned to Ryan Moore's brother Josh, who remains in hospital making a steady recovery from serious complications following a race fall on April 16.

“Every day we talk and always the first thing we speak about is Josh, and then everything else leads on from there,” said Aidan O'Brien in the post-race press conference. “We hope and pray that every day Josh makes another little bit of improvement.

“Everyone is very conscious and aware of what the important things are, but Ryan is obviously a very professional person and when he has to do his job he just goes into a different zone. That's his job and we are very grateful to him for doing it.”

London Calling for Derby Runner-up

The Goffs London Sale returns this year after a two-year hiatus and, rather unusually, the catalogue includes a Classic-placed colt.

Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}) upheld the faith shown in him by his owner Ahmad Al Shaikh when storming to a second-place finish in the Derby on Saturday at odds of 150/1, and he remains as lot 6 for next Monday's eve-of-Royal Ascot sale, now with a rather significant update to his page.

It was the third year that Al Shaikh had had a Derby runner, with Khalifa Sat (Ire) (Free Eagle {Ire}) also finishing second in 2020, and Youth Spirit (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) running eighth last year.

All three were trained by Andrew Balding, who said of Hoo Ya Mal, a 40,000gns yearling purchase by Federico Barberini, “I have Ahmad Al Shaikh to thank entirely, because I didn't want to run in the race but he insisted.”

Balding also trained the fourth home, Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir) for Mick and Janice Mariscotti, whose good day at Epsom was augmented by the win of Swilcan Bridge (GB) (Helmet {Aus}) in the opening race. Both Swilcan Bridge and Hoo Ya Mal were bred by the Weinfeld family at Meon Valley Stud, who were also the owner/breeders of the 2019 Oaks winner Anapurna (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Aga Khan Appreciation Day

There's little let-up in the Classic calendar in Europe at this time of year and no sooner had the smoke cleared from the ill-advised pre-Derby fireworks at Epsom than attention turned to Chantilly for the Prix du Jockey Club.

The British-trained duo of El Bodegon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) dug deep but could offer no riposte to the streaking home run of the Aga Khan homebred Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}).

“It's been quite a day, quite significant,” said the Aga Khan Studs manager in France, Georges Rimaud, as he assessed a magnificent afternoon which featured three stakes winners for the team.

The trio was led by Vadeni, whose victory was significant for a number of reasons, not least because he was the first Classic winner for Coolmore's young Guineas winner Churchill (Ire). For his owner/breeder he represented a ninth victory in the Prix du Jockey Club, and he was the fifth for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, whose run started back in 2009 with Le Havre (Ire).

Adding to the spoils was Baiykara (Fr), a maiden from two starts prior to Sunday but now a new group winner for her sire Zarak (Fr), who made such a promising start with his first runners last season and was the toast of the autumn and winter sales. It is easy to imagine that the Aga Khan would be thrilled to see Zarak properly succeed at stud as he is of course a son of the mare he considered to be the greatest achievement of his lengthy spell as a breeder, the great Zarkava (Fr), a fifth-generation descendant of Prince Aly Khan's champion, Petite Etoile (GB). As the Aga Khan Studs operation celebrates its centenary this year, Vadeni's success was extremely apposite, but there was more to come for both Zarak and the runners in the green and red.

Francis Graffard is now overseeing the Aga Khan's private training centre at Aiglemont along with his own training operation and, after saddling Baiykara to triumph in the G3 Prix de Royaumont, he struck again with another smart 3-year-old later on the card when Rozgar (Fr) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) won the Listed Prix Marchand d'Or, giving retained jockey Christophe Soumillon a memorable treble. Rozgar's victory was all the sweeter for his breeder as his dam, the listed-placed Roshanara (Fr), is a daughter of Sea The Stars (Ire), who stands on his Irish roster.

William Haggas, who has his string in sensational form, added to the party by having Zarak's daughter Purplepay (Fr) well primed on just her second start for him and her new owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson of Lael Stable, who paid €2 million for the Group 1-placed juvenile at Arqana in December. She can now have her name displayed in bold black type after a taking victory in the G2 Prix de Sandringham.

“It has been a very nice day: a Group 1, a Group 3 and a Listed race, and three victories with three very different horses,” Rimaud said.

“Vadeni did it very easily beating some very nice horses. He's a true champion and we're very pleased in this centennial year. His Highness and Princess Zahra are obviously very happy but sometimes it just happens like this–it's nice that it has happened this way though because it puts a little focus on what we do. There's a long road ahead but hopefully [Vadeni] will be able to make the stallion roster.”

Aurora Australis

Mare Australis (Ire), the most beautiful deep liver chestnut, has been raced sparingly through his four seasons to date, and a fetlock injury kept him off the track between his G1 Prix Ganay victory in May 2021 and his placed return in the G2 Prix d'Harcourt two months ago.

It was therefore great to see the patience of his owner/breeder Gestut Schlenderhan repaid with a fourth win for the 5-year-old, this time in the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly. The Arc had been the plan last year until injury intervened, and it remains on the cards this season.

“We breed stayers,” said Philipp von Ullmann, son of Schlenderhan's owner Baron Georg von Ullmann, before adding of winning the Arc, “It's been our dream for 153 years.”

Speaking to TDN for a feature last year, von Ullmann senior recalled his longstanding association with Mare Australis's trainer Andre Fabre.

“The first horse I had with Fabre was Shirocco and I told him at Belmont [at the Breeders' Cup] that it was the beginning of a new friendship,” he said.

“Fabre just really has this feeling. He was very happy when Mare Australis came to him as a 2-year-old, then he called me up and said 'you will be surprised but I will give him a rest and he will say thank you'.”

It was the culmination of a successful week for Mare Australis's sire Australia (GB), after

Ocean Road (Ire) became his fifth Group/Grade 1 winner in the Gamely S at Santa Anita for trainer Brendan Walsh.

Like her trainer, Ocean Road was born and raised in Ireland. She is the second top-flight winner for Kevin and Meta Cullen's broodmare Love And Laughter (Ire) (Theatrical {Ire}). The first came a decade ago when her son Wigmore Hall (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) won the GI Northern Dancer Turf S. for Michael Bell.

Walsh, now in his twelfth season in the U.S., had a good week with European imports. On Sunday at Belmont Park, he sent out Steve Parkin's homebred Lady Rockstar (GB) (Frankel {GB}) for her second successive win in as many starts since moving to his stable from William Haggas over the winter.

The half-sister to Spanish star Noozhoh Canarias (Spa) (Caradak {Ire}) made her breakthrough in England last October when winning a Kempton maiden by 12 lengths. Now four, she looks set for a bright future in the United States.

C:C The Stars

In the first-season sires' championship Havana Grey (GB) is still knocking in the winners and now has 15 to his name at a strike-rate of almost 40%.

But remember Cracksman (GB), who ran once as a 2-year-old in October over a mile, then ran placed in the Derby and Irish Derby before winning four Group 1 races from 10 to 12 furlongs? A son of the reigning champion sire Frankel, Cracksman has had just six runners to date, and four of those have already won.

Darley recently publicised Cracksman's PlusVital Speed Gene rating of C:C, i.e. sprint-orientated, with the adverting streamline “It's all about to happen faster than you think”. So far, so good on that front, as Cracksman has been represented by four winners since May 21.

Speed gene tests are all well and good as an extra guide to a horse's potential but we don't need one to remind us that good, early juveniles can come from seemingly unexpected sources. Let's not forget that Cracksman's stable-mate at Dalham Hall Stud, New Approach (Ire), had three Royal Ascot stakes winners with his first crop of 2-year-olds. That should not have been surprising, however, because as well as winning the Derby he was also champion 2-year-old. Another Classic-winning son of Galileo, Sixties Icon (GB), also took some by surprise with a scorching start when his first 2-year-olds took to the track. And the old boy proved he's still got it by siring Friday's Woodcote S winner, Legend Of Xanadu (GB), trained by Mick Channon – who else?

The moral of the story? It is not just sharp, early 2-year-olds who can sire sharp, early 2-year-olds. But in sires like Cracksman, New Approach and Sixties Icon, there is also clearly the hope of their stock progressing as the seasons unfold. And that's when it gets really exciting.
