Classy stayer Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}–Shao Line {Fr}, by General Holme) seized the initiative under Hollie Doyle from the bell and carried the G1 Qatar Prix du Cadran field pillar-to-post on a sunny Saturday at ParisLongchamp.

Pressed for most of the 4000-metre race by Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Frankie Dettori, the 7-year-old gelding dropped the hammer when cued by Doyle 500 metres from home, which burned off his main rival inside the final quarter mile. Moon Wolf (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) launched a mild bid later in the straight, but the 9-10 favourite skipped away to win by four lengths over that foe. Run For Oscar (Ire) (Oscar {Ire}) was another 3 1/2 lengths back in third.

It was a dramatically different tale than occurred during the G2 Doncaster Cup S. earlier this month for the Alan King trainee, as he had fought Doyle for much of that contest, but gutted out the victory in soft going that day once given his head. The Cadran was the third top-level score for the Singula Partnership-owned bay, who took the 2021 edition of this race and the Goodwood Cup that same year.

King, who did not make the journey to Paris, said, “I had a busy morning at home and I've just walked into Newmarket, but obviously I'm thrilled.

“I spoke to Hollie this morning and we thought there wasn't going to be much pace in the race. We said if that was the case we'd let him bowl along in front and he obviously loved it.

“He was more settled than he was at Doncaster and I think that was firstly because that run just knocked the freshness off him and second he just settled well in front today.

“We were struggling with him in the early part of the year, but the little wind operation we gave him as clearly helped and it looks like he's right back to his best.”

What a performance, what a duo

Trueshan and @HollieDoyle1 win the Group 1 Qatar Prix du Cadran at @paris_longchamp! pic.twitter.com/TxtDsiCGPI

— At The Races (@AtTheRaces) September 30, 2023

“He's a special horse and all credit to everyone at Barbury Castle,” said Doyle, who was winning for the 10th time on the dour stayer. “He's trained by a super trainer and it's great for Alan to get him back to where he is, winning the Cadran for a second time. My mum and dad are here and I don't think my dad has seen me ride a Group 1 winner, so it's extra special.”

A winner of his third G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup once again at Ascot to end his season, Trueshan was second in the Listed Further Flight S., and reported home fourth in the G3 Sagaro S. in May. After wind surgery, the Doncaster Cup was his first start since. He will target a fourth consecutive victory in the Long Distance Cup next month.

“The good thing is we have a fresh horse for the backend of the season and obviously we hope to go back to Ascot in three weeks' time to win that race for a fourth time,” King added of the Didier Blot-bred Trueshan. “I'll give him an entry in the [G1] Prix Royal-Oak the following week just in case he needs that extra time, but Ascot would be the plan.”

Pedigree Notes

The leading runner by Chapel Stud resident Planteur, Trueshan is one of six stakes winners for the stallion, who also has G2 Gran Premio del Jockey Club hero Road To Arc (Fr). Out of the winning mare Shao Line, the €8,000 Osarus La Teste Sale yearling turned 31,000gns Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up and HIT alum is a half-brother to four winners including Anecdotique (Fr) (Enrique {GB}), whose son True Marvel (Fr) (Masked Marvel {GB}) was second in the G1 Sydney Cup. Shao Line's latest foals are a pair of fillies by Planteur and Golden Horde (Ire) born in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Beaten in the G2 Doncaster Cup last season, Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) showed his story is far from finished back in that Town Moor feature on Friday as he registered an unorthodox success returning from a break. Only fourth in the G3 Sagaro S. when last seen in May, the Singula Partnership's 7-year-old had undergone wind surgery in the interim and there were obvious questions as to whether he could get back to his previous pinnacle in the staying division.

Things looked dubious for the 100-30 shot in the back straight as Hollie Doyle struggled to contain the imposing veteran behind the pace and as she let him go with five furlongs still to race it was touch and go whether he would last home. Separated from the other four in the straight, the pride of the Alan King stable could have given up as the Gosdens' Sweet William (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) gained a brief lead approaching the final furlong but instead piled it on to regain the advantage and record another impressive success by 1 1/4 lengths.

Incredible from TRUESHAN!

“That was definitely not Plan A! It's not the first time he's given me a rodeo either, but he can still win because he's so superior,” Doyle said. “He's back to his best. To do it that way round he must be. The thing today was we were going a pedestrian pace and it was breaking his stride, so when you are on a big horse like that I just let him bowl along and it was going to be make or break. The wind op has definitely helped. At Ascot earlier this year, we hacked around and he curled up a furlong and a half out whereas today he proved he's back to his best.”

It is rare to see a horse do so much wrong and still prevail at this level, but what we already knew about Trueshan is he is a true class act on his day in these “Cup” races. That was clear in the 2021 G1 Goodwood Cup, that year's G1 Prix du Cadran, in the last three editions of Ascot's G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup and in last year's Northumberland Plate in which he put up one of the all-time great weight-defying handicap performances. With Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) back in the mix after the weekend, this win adds spice to the division's autumn features.

Pedigree Notes
Trueshan has only two black-type performers under the first three dams, but one of them happens to be the current smart Australian stayer True Marvel (Fr) (Masked Marvel {GB}). In April, he was runner-up in the G1 Sydney Cup at 150-1, while two months later he proved that was no fluke when third in the G2 Brisbane Cup.

Causing an upset when edging out Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) in a thriller for last year's G2 Doncaster Cup, one of the staying division's leaders Coltrane (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) returns to Town Moor for another encounter with his nemesis on Friday. Having won Ascot's G3 Sagaro S. and the G2 Lonsdale Cup at York and been runner-up in the G1 Gold Cup in the interim, Mick and Janice Mariscotti's stalwart is better than ever at the age of six and is the one with the target on his back this time.

Andrew Balding holds Coltrane close to his heart and is relishing another battle royal. “The great thing about him is he seems to be effective on any ground and in any sort of style of race, which is a big help for these stayers,” he said. “He obviously won the race last year, but he does carry a penalty this year which makes life a lot tougher. It is not a straightforward task, but the horse is really well and he seems to thrive on his racing.”

Trueshan has been absent since finishing fourth behind Coltrane in the Sagaro in May and has undergone a wind operation, so the star stayer of 2021 has questions to answer here. Normandie Stud's progressive Ebor H. runner-up Sweet William (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) represents the Gosdens, who have a line on these through their Gold Cup hero Courage Mon Ami (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

“We think there's more improvement to come and we think he might make up into an Ascot Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup type of horse next year,” jockey Robert Havlin said of the Normandie Stud homebred. “Since we put blinkers on he's been ultra consistent. He's won over two miles and the Ebor was obviously a drop back in trip. He gets the trip well so there are a lot of positives, especially after all the rain. He doesn't need soft ground, but he handles it very well.”

Inquisitively Takes On Big Evs In The Flying Childers

Also at Doncaster on Friday is the G2 Carlsberg Danish Pilsner Flying Childers S., where Wee Sean Gan's Listed Roses S. scorer Inquisitively (GB) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}) looks to turn the tables on Big Evs (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) after their prior meeting in Royal Ascot's Listed Windsor Castle S. Trainer Kevin Philippart De Foy is concerned about the slower ground for Inquisitively, however. “The ground would be a question mark, he won on fast ground at York and so there is a question mark over soft conditions,” he said. “The horse won well at York and I think the course will suit him. It's a very flat, straight course and very straightforward. He has been in good form since his race at York, I think he took a step forward from that race. He's very straightforward and professional, I don't think anything will be an issue other than the question over the ground.”

All Nine Stand Their Ground For St Leger

There were no withdrawals from Saturday's G1 Betfred St Leger at Doncaster on Thursday, with the major news concerning the decision of Frankie Dettori to ride Juddmonte's Arrest (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) ahead of the fellow Gosden representative Gregory (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}). That leaves Kieran Shoemark with the task of steering the latter, who captured the G2 Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot for Wathnan Racing.

“I'm very happy with my mount in the race and wouldn't swap him,” Shoemark said. “As soon as Frankie made up his mind I found out. He's a high-profile horse in a high-profile race. He's one of the market leaders and to be riding a favourite in a British Classic is hugely exciting. It's where I want to be, so it's a privilege not pressure and I look forward to it.”

Also representing the Gosdens is Qatar Racing's Melrose H. winner Middle Earth (GB) (Roaring Lion), while The King & The Queen's G3 Gordon S.-winning TDN Rising Star Desert Hero (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Ballydoyle number one Continuous (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), who catapulted himself into the picture with his impressive G2 Great Voltigeur S. success, are other notables.

Ascot's Wednesday fixture features some interesting pointers to the Royal meeting and, while the card needs some work to be seen as a true “trials” event, the G3 British Racing School 40th Anniversary Commonwealth Cup Trial is likely to provide some meaningful clues ahead of the main event. The six-furlong test, registered as the Pavilion S., sees the return of Victorious Racing's impressive G2 Coventry S. winner Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) who has not been seen since sustaining an injury during the G1 Phoenix S. in August.

“He's looking like a typical sprinter now and he's a chunky little horse,” jockey Hollie Doyle said of the TDN Rising Star. “His work has been pretty solid and it's a great starting point. It's practically the Commonwealth Cup minus a few, so it's a very hot race. He has his course-and-distance form and although he may be unknown on the ground, a few of them are in the same boat.”

Paying The Penalty

Forced to race under a four-pound extra burden are Godolphin's G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and Rockcliffe Stud's G2 Flying Childers S. and G3 Molecomb S. scorer Trillium (GB) (No Nay Never), with Charlie Appleby saying of the former, “He is better suited to a bigger field and a sounder surface, but it's very much a starting point for the season and hopefully a stepping stone to the Commonwealth Cup.” Both failed to make a serious impact in their Newmarket Group 1 tests in the autumn and Trillium needs to prove she can see out this sixth furlong and race with more restraint.

New Route For Marbaan

Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's G2 Vintage S. winner Marbaan (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) failed in two Group 1 contests at two, leaving Charlie Fellowes keen to test the waters back at sprinting. “I felt towards the end of last year that maybe he didn't quite see out the seven furlongs,” he said. “Being by Oasis Dream, I think there's a good chance he might be happier over six furlongs and I think Ascot will really suit him. I think the ground will be perfect and I guess we'll find out where we really stand for this year. He took a while to come to hand this year but he did a really nice piece of work last week and that's given me the confidence that six furlongs should be fine.”

The Long And The Short Of It

Wednesday's G3 Longines Sagaro S. and Listed Howden Bloodstock Paradise S. offer the chance for the Gold Cup and Queen Anne hopefuls to stretch their legs, with the former hosting another encounter between gunslingers Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) and Coltrane (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), who duked it out in the course-and-distance G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup in October while the Paradise sees Sunderland Holdings' G1 Champion S. third My Prospero (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) revert to the mile over which he was third in last year's G1 St James's Palace S.

Alan King trainee Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}–Shao Line {Fr}, by General Holme) had annexed the last two renewals of Ascot's G2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup, but had failed to find a way past Coltrane (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) in last month's G2 Doncaster Cup. Having earlier run third in a thrilling edition of August's G1 Goodwood Cup, he was back at the top of his game to exact revenge on that rival and registered a hat-trick of victories in the two-mile marathon after a ding-dong tussle. Hollie Doyle was keen for a prominent pitch early and positioned the 11-8 favourite in fourth after passing the judge first time. Coming under pressure turning for home, Trueshan locked horns with Coltrane on the front end passing the quarter-mile marker and refused to buckle under a drive in the closing stages, hitting the line with a head advantage. Godolphin's Trawlerman (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}) fared best of the remainder and finished three lengths adrift in third.

“The ground was right today and Trueshan had to be at his best,” the winning trainer said. “Hollie thought, with a furlong to go, she'd go and win and win well, but Coltrane was not stopping and he came back at us. He had to be right up there today to hold them off. I didn't enjoy watching it, but I'll enjoy the replay. He was in a lovely place and travelling well and, turning in, I thought we had a good chance. I'm very good friends with the Mariscottis, who own Coltrane and I thought they're going to come and do us again. I think, last time at Doncaster, he was remembering Goodwood and wouldn't let himself down. He came to challenge and he went right, he went left and he just wouldn't go forward. He had a week down at Jamie McGee's on the water treadmill, which he absolutely loves, and then we started training him for this. He's had two or three days on the treadmill after his bits of work, which just loosens him up and it's got him back. I took the view that, win, lose or draw today, I had all winter to get him back. As long as we mind him, he could be around for a few years yet. I just want a very wet June, because the one thing I'd love to run him in is the [G1] Gold Cup [at Royal Ascot].”

Doyle added, “What a horse. I am speechless to be honest. Alan King is the maker of this horse and what he has done today, on the back of his last two runs, is phenomenal. It was really rough going into that first bend. I had Wordsworth on my outside, I was caught in a pocket and it was one of them where you either kick in or get flattened. I kicked in and some people suffered as a consequence. For someone like me, I'm quite emotionally invested in the sport and days like this mean the world to me.”

Reflecting on the performance of Coltrane, trainer Andrew Balding said, “Coltrane is just so brave and tough and was beaten by a fine horse on the day.” John Gosden added, “Trawlerman has run a great race and had a lovely run. For an Ebor winner to come and mix it with the Group horses is great.”

Trueshan is the leading performer and lone stakes winner for dual scorer Shao Line (Fr) (General Holme), who has five winners to her credit and is a granddaughter of Marie de Lempire (Fr) (Faristan {GB}), herself the dam of the stakes-winning Dom Lurcy (Dom Racine {Fr}). Marie de Lempire is kin to the stakes-winning Marie d'Ivors (Fr) (Rheffic {Fr}) and the mare Herila (Fr) (Bold Lad), who in turn is the second dam of G1 Derby Italiano hero Houmayoun Fr) (Shernazar {Ire}) and three-time stakes victrix Hanzala (Akarad {Fr}), with this being the tail line of G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Altissima (Klairon {Fr}).

He may have been missing from Royal Ascot, but Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) has since reminded everybody that he belongs at the very top of the staying division and he looks set to meet Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in his defence of the G1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup on Tuesday. Re-routed to Newcastle to defy a big weight in the historic Northumberland Plate June 25, last year's winner has good ground and that is slow enough for connections to take the plunge. While trainer Alan King has to walk the course, part-owner Andrew Gemmell suggested that the 6-year-old who also captured the G1 Prix du Cadran and two editions of the G2 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup is good to go for a huge heavyweight tussle. “It would be nice to run and defend his title and all being well and the weather being okay, I'm sure we will,” he said. “The intention is definitely to go, it's not like Ascot when we kind of knew that it wasn't really going to happen, so I think there is every possibility he will run.”

Over To Atzeni

Much has been made of the replacement by Andrea Atzeni of Frankie Dettori on Stradivarius and it is certain that the veteran will be playing a more prominent role than of late as he looks for a fifth renewal. While his draw in seven may mean that he is hemmed in again on the inside due to the quick left turn the field faces from the two-mile start, it will soon open up as they move to the right and then it will be all to play for. Whatever tactical ploy Atzeni has in his mind, Bjorn Nielsen's evergreen performer will have more exposure than usual and the answer to the question as to how much ability he retains should be provided in a race of truth. “It's a great opportunity for me and he owes us nothing, so hopefully we'll see the Stradivarius we've seen in the past,” commented Atzeni, who partnered the chestnut on his first two Goodwood Cup victories back in 2017 and 2018.

A Point To Prove With Kyprios

Whatever befell Stradivarius in the June 16 G1 Gold Cup, Kyprios seemed a worthy winner with his power-packed finish and he should be even more effective back at two miles with his closing effort at Ascot the fastest in recent history. This is a speedy stayer with the right temperament to rack up a sequence in these Cup races, much as one of his chief rival's has and Aidan O'Brien believes he is still on the up. “He is still learning and is a relaxed horse who takes everything in his stride, so we think there is more improvement to come,” he said. “He is straightforward to ride and uncomplicated. I think he is well-balanced and doesn't over-race. Goodwood is an unusual track, but he seems to be okay going left or right-handed.” Ryan Moore added on his Betfair blog, “Ignore all the talk about Stradivarius, I think my colt beat him fair and square at Royal Ascot and maybe a shade comfortably too in the final analysis. It may well be that the older horse is better than he was able to show that day, but Kyprios was very professional and determined there, showing a great attitude.”

Vintage Action

Tuesday's action at Goodwood also features the G2 Japan Racing Association Vintage S., with no standout among the nine engaged. One of the more interesting contenders is Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's July 9 Salisbury novice scorer Marbaan (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a relative of Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) who looks to give Charlie Fellowes something to dream about. Charlie and Mark Johnston have targeted this meeting as keenly as ever and supply two unbeaten colts in

Dear My Friend (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and Dornoch Castle (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}). Charlie is looking for a fifth renewal for the stable since 1993 and he said, “I would struggle to split them, to be fair. Dornoch Castle's form is probably a touch stronger as there are a lot of horses that have come out of his races and won subsequently, but the other horse did well to win over six furlongs because it was far too sharp for him at Carlisle.”

Time For Another Pogo?

One of 2022's revelations, the May 28 G3 John Of Gaunt S. and June 25 G3 Criterion S. winner Pogo (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}), encounters a higher-class of rival in Tuesday's G2 World Pool Lennox S. but Gary and Linnet Woodward's 6-year-old seems in unstoppable form at present. “He obviously hasn't won at this level before, but he did win a Group 3 with a penalty last time and he won that one more easily than he did without it the time before,” trainer Charlie Hills said. Cheveley Park Stud's G2 Hungerford S. winner Sacred (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) looms large back at her favoured seven furlongs having run a stormer when a length fifth in the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. over six at Royal Ascot June 18.

Baaeed Meets Six In The Sussex

Following Wednesday's disappointing bulletin on Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), Shadwell's Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) cuts a domineering figure in Wednesday's G1 Qatar Sussex S. at Goodwood. Charlie Appleby still has the May 15 G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) among the seven confirmed on Monday, with the defending champion and G1 July Cup heroine Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Ballydoyle's G2 Minstrel S. scorer Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) other key protagonists. The latter was fifth last year, but Aidan O'Brien said, “He won nicely the last day at The Curragh and is in good form. He won the same race last year before the Sussex, but then at Goodwood it was a bit soft for him. It will be better ground this year hopefully and that will suit him.”

St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), a four-time Group 1 winner in 2021 and five-time top-level scorer overall, was named the Cartier Horse of the Year and Cartier 3-Year-Old Colt during the 31st annual Cartier Racing Awards at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Wednesday evening.

The sixth Cartier Horse of the Year for the Coolmore partners since the awards began in 1991, the Aidan O'Brien trainee joins the illustrious company of stablemates Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat) (2000), Rock Of Gibraltar (Ire) (Danehill) (2002), Hurricane Run (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) (2005), Dylan Thomas (Ire) (Danehill) (2007) and Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (2016).

A winner of the G1 Dewhurst S. at two, the Robert Scarborough-bred completed an unbeaten campaign in 2021 including a brace of French Classic wins in the G1 French 2000 Guineas and G1 Prix du Jockey Club. The 1.3 million gns Tattersalls October Yearling then won a thrilling renewal of the G1 Eclipse S. and defeated 2020 GI Breeders' Cup Turf heroine Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) in the G1 Irish Champion S. to end his career. At the beginning of November, it was announced he would join the Coolmore Stud roster for 2022.

The other nominees for Cartier Horse of the Year were Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) and Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Of that trio, Baaeed and Hurricane Lane, along with G1 Derby hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), were nominated in the Cartier 3-Year-Old Colt category.

Raced and trained by the same connections as St Mark's Basilica, Classic heroine Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) was given the nod as the Cartier 3-Year-Old Filly. A brilliant winner of the G3 Musidora S. in May, the bay added the G1 Oaks by a record 16 lengths in June at Epsom. The margin of her G1 Irish Oaks victory was 8 1/2 lengths, and she was eased to a four-length win versus her elders in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks in the summer. She was second in the G1 Prix Vermeille in France and third in the G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares S. at Ascot to end her year.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum's Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) was named the Cartier Older Horse. Trained by John and Thady Gosden, the Highclere Stud and Floors Farming-bred was named the Cartier 3-Year-Old Colt in 2020. After a season that saw him win two Group 1s over a mile last term, he swept all before him in his season opener-the G2 bet365 Mile at Sandown in April. He added the G1 Lockinge S. to his resume later that spring and defeated all comers in the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot. After scoring in his second consecutive G1 Prix Jacques le Marois in France, Palace Pier finished his career with a second in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. to Cartier 3-Year-Old Colt nominee Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). He will stand at under the Darley banner at Dalham Hall Stud.

Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) earned Cartier 2-Year-Old Colt honours after a flawless campaign for Godolphin and Charlie Appleby. Bred by Haras d'Haspel, the bay brought 210,000gns at the 2021 Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale and was quickly off the mark at first asking at Sandown. The G2 Superlative S. went his way at Newmarket, and then he traveled to Ireland to face off with fellow Cartier juvenile colt nominee, Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the G1 National S. at The Curragh. Despite the high quality of opposition, the result was the same, with Native Trail running out a 3 1/2-length winner. In his final start of the season, the colt was first past the post in the G1 Dewhurst S. back at HQ in October, the same Group 1 double achieved by former Godolphin star and young sire Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal).

Cheveley Park homebred Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was named the Cartier 2-Year-Old Filly. Trained by John and Thady Gosden, the daughter of G1 1000 Guineas bridesmaid Starscope (GB) (Selkirk) carries an unbeaten record into her sophomore season. Successful on debut at Newmarket in June, she landed the Listed Star S. at Sandown a month later and took the G2 May Hill S. at Doncaster in September. She capped 2021 with a 2 1/2-length victory in the G1 Fillies' Mile in October.

Starman (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}), a homebred for David Ward, was honoured with the Cartier Sprinter award. A winner of the G2 Duke of York S. in May where he downed 2020 G1 July Cup winner Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}), the 4-year-old colt was back in action in the G1 July Cup at Newmarket. In that race he overcame a troubled trip to win by 1 1/4 lengths and gave his owner and trainer, Ed Walker, a first win at the highest level. It was announced in October that he would stand at Tally-Ho Stud for 2022.

After claiming three major staying prizes in 2021, Singula Partnership's Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) was named the Cartier Stayer. Trainer Alan King was given his first Group 1 success on the Flat in the G1 Goodwood Cup by the 5-year-old gelding. Ridden by Hollie Doyle in that prize, Trueshan reveled in the testing conditions of the G1 Prix du Cadran on Arc weekend, to defeat three-time Cartier Stayer Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). After returning from France, Trueshan, bred by Didier Blot, defended his crown in the G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup.

The Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit was awarded to David Elsworth, one of the most successful dual-purpose trainers in Britain. Besides Flat Classic success, Elsworth has parlayed his 67-year career into victories in the Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup. Licenced in 1978 and still going strong at 83, some of Elsworth's best horses included star jumper Desert Orchid (GB) (Grey Mirage I {GB}), standout stayer Persian Punch (Ire) (Persian Heights {GB}), the crack sprinter Indian Ridge (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}) and Irish Classic heroine In The Groove (GB) (Night Shift). Named Champion National Hunt Trainer in 1987/88, Elsworth has trained seven Group 1 winners on the Flat and has 16 Royal Ascot winners to his name. His filly Arabian Queen (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) shocked Derby/Arc hero Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) in the G1 Juddmonte International S. at 50-1 in 2015.

Harry Herbert, Cartier's Racing Consultant said, “The 2021 European Flat season has once again highlighted all that is wonderful in this great sport.

“With capacity crowds back at racecourses and some brilliant equine performances, we were ultimately rewarded with a season to savour.

“Racing cannot continue without the ongoing support of owners and I would like to extend my congratulations to tonight's winners–Coolmore, Godolphin, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Cheveley Park Stud, David Ward and the Singula Partnership.

“David Elsworth has truly reached the summit of his profession and is the perfect recipient for the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit in 2021. A man whose life has been steeped in racing, Elsworth's career spans 67 years and has scaled the heights of both Jump and Flat racing. One of the most successful dual-purpose trainers Britain has produced, the sport is lucky to call him one of our own.

“Cartier's support of these prestigious awards stretches right back to 1991 and is ongoing as we once again enjoy all coming together at the Dorchester Hotel for such a wonderful event. We are truly blessed to be able to enjoy such tremendous support.”

Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK, added, “The 2021 European Flat season has lived up to its billing as horseracing once again highlighted the magic and brilliance of the sport following a challenging 2020.

“I am delighted for the Cartier Racing Awards to be taking place once again at the Dorchester Hotel celebrating another wonderful year of sport.

“It is an honour to celebrate the very best of horseracing and it is a privilege for Cartier to be celebrating the 31st anniversary of the Cartier Racing Awards. My heartfelt congratulations go out to this year's exceptional winners.

Horses earned points in Pattern races (30%), combined at the end of season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists/handicappers (35%) and votes from readers of Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph (35%) to be considered for the awards. Highlights of the 31st annual Cartier Racing Awards will be shown on Sky Sports Racing on the evening of Friday, Nov. 12.

Adding to his fast-accumulating haul of big-race wins on Saturday, Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) justified even-money favouritism to bring up a repeat in Ascot's G2 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup. Successful on slow ground in the July 27 G1 Goodwood Cup and the G1 Prix du Cadran at ParisLongchamp a fortnight prior to this, the 5-year-old was held up in mid-division early by Hollie Doyle before making a wide move passing four out. In front two furlongs later, the bay stayed on resolutely to deny the 50-1 shot Tashkhan (Ire) (Born To Sea {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths, with 2 1/2 lengths back to Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who had threatened a furlong from home before flattening out.

Godolphin's June 5 G1 Epsom Derby and July 24 G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) will be one of the 10 starters in Saturday's G1 QIPCO Champion S. at Ascot after Charlie Appleby pushed go on Thursday morning.

Fourth in last Sunday's G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at ParisLongchamp, the homebred has given all the right signals in the interim period and adds substance to a renewal robbed of Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) who has been re-routed to take the place of the absent Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. Drawn in nine, Adayar is set to re-engage the King George runner-up Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB})–who has stall two–with only Mohamed Obaida's supplemented Aug. 14 G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano and Oct. 2 G2 Prix Dollar scorer Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}) wider out.

Appleby revealed that connections were buoyed by an impressive piece of work on Wednesday.

“It was an easy piece of work to confirm his wellbeing and he did it so well,” he explained. “We discussed it with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and the decision was taken to run. We are all looking forward to the rematch with Mishriff, particularly over this trip. Adayar beat Mishriff comfortably in the King George and then Mishriff came out and dominated the Juddmonte International at York over the distance of Saturday's race. We are happy to meet him over the mile and a quarter, which is the trip where we believe Adayar's potential lies next year.”

Aidan O'Brien revealed that Love returned an unsatisfactory blood result on Thursday, leading to the shift of the June 4 G1 Epsom Oaks, July 17 G1 Irish Oaks and Aug. 19 G1 Yorkshire Oaks heroine Snowfall to the Fillies & Mares which has attracted a field of eight. Ballydoyle's May 2 G1 1000 Guineas and Aug. 3 G1 Prix Rothschild heroine Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) will take on Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum's five-times group 1-winning Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and the Sept. 5 G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp hero Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the 10-runner G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. sponsored by QIPCO.

There will be 20 runners in a wide-open renewal of the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S., where Yoshiro Kubota's 'TDN Rising Star' Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) bids to atone for a series of top-level near-misses, while the opening G2 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup sees the G1 Prix du Cadran one-two Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) and Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) square up again. The latter has been given the green light by the Gosdens and owner-breeder Bjorn Nielsen to attempt to repeat his 2018 win in the race which saw Moyglare Stud's Search For a Song (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) left out of the reckoning by Dermot Weld. Other high-profile absentees alongside her and Love are the Fillies & Mares-targeted La Petite Coco (Ire) (Ruler of the World {Ire}) and Free Wind (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

William Haggas has already had a season to savour and the barometer for his stable's health is the fact that he has a trio engaged in the Champion, headed by last year's winner Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's title-holder is coming back off a 105-day absence, having finished runner-up in the G1 Eclipse S. at Sandown July 3.

“Addeybb's ideal ground is when it passes an inspection on the morning of the race and he sloshes through that,” Haggas said. “This is going to be soft, but I'm not sure it will be soft enough for him. He stays well and his record right-handed is fantastic, but this is a hugely competitive, fantastic race. We weren't able to get a prep into him, but he's taken a lot of graft this year and his record fresh is excellent. We think we've got him pretty ready.”

Shadwell's Al Aasy (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) has suffered three defeats since his impressive wins in the Apr. 18 G3 John Porter S. and May 15 G3 Aston Park S. at Newbury, with a latest fourth in that venue's Sept. 18 G3 Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup his most deflating. His trainer has long held him in the highest affection and said, “We all know that Al Aasy doesn't find as much under pressure as it looks like he might, so I hope his jockey waits a bit. At Newbury, he went three and a half from home and it exposed him. The horse is much better than that, he should have won there and we'll see what he has to offer as he's a strong stayer at a mile and a quarter. He may not be good enough, but he's talented and he's no mug even in a race of this quality. I love him and he's a very good horse who has been rubbished by everyone, so I'd love to see him run a good race.”

Of Dubai Honour, who is one of six 3-year-olds in the feature, he added, “He won really easily in the Guillaume d'Ornano, but they went really hard there whereas in the Dollar they went slow and he showed a real turn of foot. There's nothing else for him until Hong Kong in December and when I suggested it, the owner nearly bit my hand off. He's an intriguing runner, but Mishriff was awesome at York and I could do without Adayar. He's a bloody good horse and I'd be frightened of him, even over a mile and a quarter. He'll be hard to pass. This year we have nine runners on the day, when we normally have one or two, so we are blessed to have so many nice horses and we've hopefully got them in good shape.”

All bar the retired Wonderful Tonight (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) return to defend their crowns in their respective races this year, with Trueshan and Addeybb joined by the Sprint winner Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and Al Asayl France's The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who heads back to the QEII. It is in the latter contest that Haggas saddles what could be his leading contender on the fixture in the unbeaten Baaeed, who could arguably be the most exciting of the eight Group 1 winners in the line-up for what looks the strongest race on the card and the mile championship decider of 2021. Despite his profile, the head of Somerville Lodge is not getting carried away.

“Whilst I've been very impressed with what he's done in such a short space of time, he's got a big task on Saturday,” he said of the Shadwell homebred. “Not only is there Palace Pier, who is a remarkably consistent and tough horse, but there's Alcohol Free, Mother Earth, The Revenant and Benbatl–it's a hell of a strong race with lots of good horses. Without undermining those behind him in the Moulin, we'd had a little hiccup and a rushed preparation for that and I'm pretty sure we didn't see him at his best. The bit none of us know is what he's got left, but Jim [Crowley] is very fond of him and he's a lovely horse to deal with. He's as fit as we want him and ready to go in what is probably the best mile race of the season.”

Nick Smith, Ascot's director of racing and communications, is keen for the 10th Champions Day to play out to an expected crowd of around of 25,000.

“You couldn't have asked for a lot better,” he said after the declarations were made on Thursday morning. “The weather is pretty sound, so it will probably be the best renewal we've had since Excelebration and Frankel kind of bookended the card early on. The final declarations are great. The stayers' race is looking like the race of the year over that trip, which is slightly unexpected after a strong Cadran, but great to see. The Champion S. and the QEII are probably joint highlights with Adayar running now against Mishriff–the King George one and two. You've got to say that now has become the outstanding clash. It's not bad to have Baaeed and Palace Pier as the appetiser, so we're really thrilled. It's going to be a great day.”

On the climax to the close race for the Flat jockeys' championship between Oisin Murphy and William Buick, Smith added, “It will probably go to the wire now. It's an intriguing added dimension, especially if it ended up going to the Balmoral [H]. It's fascinating really. The declarations didn't need another story, but it certainly is another thread. We'll have a crowd of about 25,000 with the weather looking set. It will still seem reasonably comfortable. It will be a tremendous day and a fantastic way to see the season out with a real bang.”
