Breaking the juvenile track record at Chantilly on Sunday, Christopher Head trainee Ramatuelle (Justify–Raven's Lady {GB}, by Raven's Pass) justified 6-4 favouritism in the G3 Prix du Bois Longines by dominating her nine rivals with a spectacular display in the six-furlong contest.

The eventual winner was positioned in a handy second as market rival Zorken (Fr) (Goken {Fr}) set the tone up front. Inching into second at halfway, she quickened to the fore entering the final furlong and powered clear in highly impressive fashion to easily outclass her rivals by five lengths and more. Zorken kept on well to finish second, 1 3/4 lengths ahead of 'TDN Rising Star' Les Pavots (Ire) (No Nay Never) in third. Ramatuelle became sire Justify's fifth 'TDN Rising Star' when delivering a taking display in her Apr. 11 unveiling over five furlongs at this venue, but was narrowly denied by fellow 'TDN Rising Star' Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) when returning in a May 28 six-furlong conditions heat at Saint-Cloud in her only other start. Ramatuelle's time of 1:08.05 eclipsed the prior best of 1:08.31 set by Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never) in last year's G2 Prix Robert Papin.

“We have some great partners, we're creating some great relationships and we feel very blessed,” commented part-owner and NBA All-Star Tony Parker. “We had a great experience with [G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner] Mangoustine last year and here we are winning another big race. It's unbelievable. It's all you can ask, to have a horse that allows you to dream, and we are really excited after this win. There was no panic and we weren't disheartened by her defeat last time and, hopefully, she recuperates well and is ready to go for her next target. [Trainer] Christopher [Head] told me in February her programme will include the [G2] Prix Robert Papin and the [G1] Prix Morny and maybe we can now go for those big races.” Head added, “The plan is going exactly as we wished, so we will do our best to take her to the Papin now.”

The February-foaled chestnut's third dam, G3 Fred Darling S. winner Sueboog (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), is a half-sister to the dam of GSW G1 Grand Prix de Paris and G1 Prix Jean Prat runner-up Shaanmer (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}) and stakes-winning GI Garden City Breeders' Cup H. second Nordican Inch (GB) (Inchinor {GB}).

The 56th International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) Conference was held Monday in Paris and the focus was on key challenges and opportunities, including the issues of integrity and fan engagement, facing the industry around the globe.

“Integrity lies at the foundation of our sport and must inform every decision that we make,” said IFHA Chair Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges. “The pandemic has inherently changed the way that fans and punters enjoy and participate in horse racing. A good digital customer experience is key, and the general trend of digital evolution further emphasizes that all industry players need to adapt quickly to emerging technologies and behaviors.”

The conference also featured an address by Jockey Club Chairman Stuart Janney. Janney was among delegates from 40 different countries.

Janney used his opportunity to update the delegates on the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA), the advancements the sport has made in recent years in the U.S. and the challenges it will face in the years ahead.

Janney said that if HISA had not been passed into law, the sport in the U.S. faced a perilous future. Lisa Lazarus, CEO of HISA, also provided the attendees with an overview of the establishment and work of HISA, its current challenges, and its future plans.

“There was no certainty of success,” Janney said of the chances the bill would be passed. “But we did know that the state-by-

state regulatory process in the United States was a failure, and with our partners in support of the bill, including Breeders' Cup and the IFHA, we needed a dramatic change if the sport was to be sustainable.”

Still, Janney was clear that the sport in the U.S. still has its problems and that its long-term success depends on viable solutions to those issues.

“Things will still have to change for American racing–and perhaps for all of us–as challenges remain,” Janney said.

He touched upon several issues, including changing attitudes regarding animal welfare.

“First off, the urbanization of America means four out of five people now live in densely populated communities, which means that fewer and fewer people are directly familiar with farming and livestock,” he said. “As a result, we've seen matters of animal welfare become policy drivers for important parts of our governments as well as lead stories in mainstream media. And beyond America, we see the same in many other corners of the world: how well we treat our equine competitors will become an important component for the growth and popularity of Thoroughbred racing.”

Other issues he raised included the Jockey Club's mission to ensure the integrity of the breed, and his comments touched upon his group's desire to maintain diversity in the breed.

“There is no doubt that there has been a narrowing of the genetic profile of many of the horses in our stud books, and we need to study the effects of these practices and consider remedies,” he said.

Noting the high-profile arrests in March of 2020 that came after an FBI investigation into doping in the sport, Janney said the industry must continue to be rigorous in its efforts to catch the cheats.

“With what is at stake in purses, betting pools and in the sales ring, collective actions to prevent crimes like these must be a top priority,” he said. “To that end, the American Jockey Club will continue to use our human and financial resources to protect the integrity of the game and to grow the sport. And we enthusiastically support the work of HISA, which we believe will help the sport in America…”

Despite his concerns, Janney said he believes the are plenty of reasons for optimism when it comes to U.S. racing.

“In a lot of ways, American racing is very much on the upswing and again leading the world in many important measurements,” he said.

Those measurements, he said, include rising handle totals, expanded TV coverage, booming horse sales and the ever-increasing popularity of meets like Del Mar and Saratoga and the major events like the Triple Crown races and the Breeders' Cup.

Following a discussion of HISA, several experts were interviewed on the subject of fan engagement. Tony Parker, the former NBA star who has become a prominent Classic-winning Thoroughbred owner in his native France, said racing needed to convey a message that it is not just a sport for the wealthy.

“Everyone, the vision they have of horse racing is that it's for billionaires,” said Parker. “They think normal people can't come into the horse world. It really is the total opposite. How can we change that image and get everyone involved? Use social media and try to do different stuff. I want to bring something different and try to make it more fun for younger people for people to come and watch horse racing.

“My friends, because I am on social media, they are like, 'Okay, how do you go into this world?' If you are worried about it or you think it's too much money, just start with 5%. Go slow and you can learn the horse world. We have to do a lot more if we want a bigger audience. You have to go to them and promote it.”

Near the end of the conference, Carly Dixon, Executive General Manager, Stakeholder, Customer & Corporate Affairs, Racing Victoria, presented on the upcoming 39th Asian Racing Conference (ARC), which will be held in Melbourne in February 2023.

It has been a fascinating subplot to the Flat season, international sports people having their colours carried to big-race victories and, less than a month after former NBA star Tony Parker landed French 1,000 Guineas glory with Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}), the Atlético Madrid and French international striker Antoine Griezmann secured victory in the German equivalent with Txope (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}).

Trained by Philippe Decouz, Txope, which is the nickname Griezmann gave his wife, ran out a convincing winner for the World Cup-winning soccer player at Dusseldorf racecourse on Sunday.

Txope was knocked down to bloodstock agent Laurent Benoit, who revealed that Griezmann got huge enjoyment out of the victory, and shared how the seeds for Sunday's success were sown back in 2012.

Benoit said, “I need to try and make a long story short because I bought the dam of Txope, Power Of The Moon (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) as a foal back in 2012, so that is where the story began. We bought the mare on behalf of Gerry Ryan, the owner of Melbourne Cup winner Americain, and Puissance de Lune (Ire) (Shamardal), who was a very good horse in Australia.

“He asked me to buy him a filly to race back in 2012 and I was looking for something that would be sharp and something that had quality. I ended up buying Power Of The Moon. I was keen to buy a filly with Linamix (Fr) as the broodmare sire and was very happy to buy her off Norelands as well.”

Laurent Benoit | Tattersalls

He added, “Gerry had good fun with Power Of The Moon during her racing career but decided to sell her when it was over. She went to the breeding shed and I actually bought her privately twice afterwards so I have bought this mare three times! I bought her more recently on behalf of Thierry Gillier, who is a well-known fashion magnate, and thought she'd make a perfect fit for Siyouni (FR) being by Acclamation. She went four years in a row to Siyouni and they kept the first two fillies.”

Txope was the first filly out of Power Of The Moon to be offered up at public auction and Benoit, who at the time had just started recruiting stock for Griezmann, thought she'd make the perfect fit for his new client and went to €310,000 to secure the deal at Arqana in 2020.

He said, “It was around this time where I started working for Antoine, through the racehorse trainer Philippe Decouz, and we were looking for something sharp. To be honest, she was very easy to pick at the sales for them because she was a very good-looking filly.

“She was a bit on the small side but that came from the female line. Being by Siyouni, we thought it was a very safe bet and so far so good. She won he German 1000 Guineas in good style and it was a great result.”

Griezmann was part of the France team that played Croatia on Monday evening and, according to Benoit, has yet been able to find the time to celebrate the success of Txope due to a jam-packed schedule.

He said, “Antoine has been very busy and is playing tonight [Monday] for France so he hasn't had much time to celebrate the win but he watched the race live of course. He was very happy and it's a passion he shares with his father Alain.

“It is great for the game to have people like Antoine involved, especially when they have some big successes. I mean, we cannot hope for much more than that.”

On future plans, Benoit added, “Antoine has a couple of mares already and will be happy to keep a couple of nice ones to breed from. He has 12 horses in training and hopefully there are some exciting 2-year-olds coming along for him.

“Txope has a full-brother going to the sales in August. Power Of The Moon also has a Hello Youmzain (Fr) filly foal at foot and is foal to Palace Pier (GB). And, not only that, just to make the link, Puissance de Lune translates to Power Of The Moon, so it's a nice story to tell.”

It was a relatively quiet week in the U.S. as everyone drew breath between Derby and Preakness, but the action came thick and fast in Europe. Here's what grabbed our attention over the last seven days.

From San Antonio to Longchamp…

Tony Parker, former San Antonio Spurs icon, was in the headlines Sunday as part-owner of Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}), winner of the G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches. Parker, who joins a growing list of sports stars involved in horse ownership in France, won four NBA championships (2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014) with the Spurs. His number nine jersey was also retired.

Never-Ending Success…

We the People is the second consecutive son of Constitution to win the GII Peter Pan S., following Promise Keeper last year. He's also bred on the same cross as the stallion's best son, Tiz the Law, whose quartet of Grade I wins includes the Belmont S. Although it should be noted that was the year it was run at 1 1/8 miles as the first leg of the Triple Crown in 2020.

2022, No More Drama…

It was reported last week, by the KHRC, that the post-race tests for banned substances in the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Longines Kentucky Oaks horses were cleared. Onwards and upwards.

The World's Greatest?…

Trainer William Haggas didn't quite go that far, after Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire})'s seventh win on the spin, but he also didn't really dismiss it. “I would not go as far as to say he is the best horse in the world–that is the sort of thing others might say–but he has done very well.” Either way, it's worth watching his latest romp in the G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge S. on repeat. Enjoy.

Baaeed. Sit back and watch on repeat. pic.twitter.com/vtqTghttoJ

— TDN (@theTDN) May 14, 2022

All That Glitters Is Gold For Brant…

She may have cost €3-million when purchased by Michel Zerolo's Oceanic Bloodstock at Arqana in December, and Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) will have far bigger goals than Saturday's GIII Beaugay S. at Belmont, but she's off to a good start for Chad Brown and new owners Peter Brant and Michael Tabor. Brant is on a terrific run at the moment, which is great to see for such a staunch supporter of the game.

Tony Parker's Infinity Nine Horses was in the limelight at ParisLongchamp on Sunday as the Mikel Delzangles-trained Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) denied Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) the G1 1000 Guineas-G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches double in a frantic finale. Having surrendered her unbeaten record when third in the course-and-distance G3 Prix de la Grotte Apr. 17, last year's G3 Prix Miesque winner was back on track where it mattered under one of the world's most journeyed and accomplished jockeys in Gerald Mossé. Settled behind the leading quartet early despite being caught wide, the 10-1 shot swooped on the leader Cachet with a furlong remaining and it was nip-and-tuck from there to the line. When it came, the Newmarket Classic heroine was rallying gamely but the grey still had a head to spare, with Times Square (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) closing in with every stride to finish a short head away in third in a blanket finish. “We didn't get cover but I thought, 'don't panic' and she really gave me a good feel and fought to the line. The English filly was tough, but she had kept something in the locker,” Mossé said. “When you ride one on a day like this, with that crowd, it reminds me of the old days. For the time being, I'll keep riding and keep my training licence in my pocket.”

Trained by Frederic Rossi last term, Mangoustine who was a €46,000 purchase by David Redvers at the 2020 Arqana Deauville September Yearling Sale was three-for-three with a Deauville introduction followed by Lyon-Parilly's Listed Criterium de Lyon over a mile and Chantilly's G3 Prix Miesque at seven furlongs. Sharpened by her return in the Grotte, she was able to draft close up in the initial stages of this race which acted as a precursor of what was to come in the Poulains. With the eventual first three in the first five early on, the front end was the place to be at ParisLongchamp on Sunday and it is to the winner's credit that she gave the 1000 Guineas winner a two-length headstart before running her down. Her penultimate furlong of 10.82 was the fine margin which told in the end as the first eight were covered by just over two lengths.

Delzangles is thinking of Royal Ascot for the winner now. “We hadn't planned to be where we were, but she was very relaxed and it was a good pace,” he said. “I wasn't surprised that she was beaten in her trial, as she was well but not at 100%. She needed a bit of time to come out of the winter and everything looked perfect after the Grotte. A mile is her distance, so she might go to the [G1] Coronation.”

George Boughey said of the gallant runner-up, who was not asked to race as hard early as she had been at Newmarket, “She ran a blinder. She was tenacious again there and did the donkey work and battled back when they joined her. I'm sure there are other races in her and it's a huge compliment to her just two weeks after the Guineas. The draw possibly cost us, as she had to give up a little bit of ground from that and she'll go to the Coronation now.”

Mangoustine, whose 2-year-old half-brother by Zoustar (Aus) was a 35,000gns Book 2 purchase by Sam Sangster Bloodstock, is out of a half-sister to another Pouliches heroine in Flotilla (Fr) (Mizzen Mast), who also annexed the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Her dam Zotilla (Ire) (Zamindar), who also has a filly foal by Too Darn Hot (GB), is a daughter of the GIII Miesque S. winner Louvain (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}) and therefore a half to the Listed Prix Right Royal winner Big Five (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and the stakes-winning Louvakhova (Maria's Mon). She is in turn the dam of G3 Gallinule S. winner Crossfirehurricane (Kitten's Joy) and the Listed Patton S. winner My Generation (Speightstown).

Louvain is a daughter of the listed-winning sprinter Flanders (Ire) (Common Grounds {GB}), who also finished runner-up in the G2 King's Stand S. before producing the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup winner G Force (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}). She is a half-sister to the dam of the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. and G1 July Cup-winning sire Lethal Force (Ire) by Mangoustine's sire Dark Angel, while this is also the family of the G1 Prix Morny runner-up Family One (Fr) (Dubai Destination) and the G2 Rockfel S. winner Juliet Capulet (Ire) also by Dark Angel.

Former basketball team mates, friends and business partners Tony Parker and Nicolas Batum have joined together to purchase the 86-hectare Haras de Quetieville outside Deauville.

Parker, who is a burgeoning racehorse owner under his Infinity Nine Horses banner, said, “This investment was not planned in the short term, but I loved [the stud] when I visited it for the first time. With [Infinity Nine Executive Director] Clement [Tropres], we worked hard before launching this acquisition. It is a real pleasure to share this adventure with Nicolas Batum, my partner in most of my projects. We really want our Domaine de Quetieville to be open to everyone–trainers, owners, but also to a new clientele. Our team will always be available for the external customers of the Domaine but also to serve a medium-term ambition: to breed the future early champion 2-year-olds, like my career.

“Ambition, patience, and determination were our leitmotivs when Infinity Nine Horses was launched. They are even more on the Domaine de Quetieville.”

Batum, a native of Lisieux who wanted to invest in the region, said, “It is a quiet and exceptional place. These 86 hectares combined with our infrastructure should allow us to receive, raise and train the future stars of tomorrow in an idyllic location for all those who wish to support our project. Being part of this adventure in my native region, in partnership with Tony, is amazing.”
