The rail-drawn URBAN LEGEND (Into Mischief) is one of three Bob Baffert trainees to debut in the Santa Anita finale. Out of MSW Singing Kitty (Ministers Wild Cat), the bay colt went for $300,000 at Keeneland September before bringing $1.3 million at the OBS April Sale. He is campaigned by Morplay Racing LLC, Rosedown Racing Stables, LLC and Kerri Radcliffe.

The Hall of Fame conditioner will also saddle Nysos (Nyquist), who was purchased by Baoma Corp. for $550,000 at OBS April, and British Isles (Justify). Out of GSW Purely Hot (Pure Prize) and a half-brother to GI American Pharoah S. champ Eight Rings (Empire Maker), the latter is owned by Mrs. John Magnier, Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor.

Also set for his unveiling is Tracker (Curlin), who is out of GI Darley Alcibiades S. heroine Gomo (Uncle Mo). The $250,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $900,000 OBS March graduate is campaigned by Talla Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds, Woodford Racing and Robert and DeLynn Abernathy. TJCIS PPS

Tommy Town Thoroughbreds and trainer Jeff Engler send out Bedazzle 'Em (American Pharoah) for her first start. The $750,000 Keeneland September graduate counts GIII Schuylerville S. winner Just Cindy (Justify) as a half sister.

She'll face Red White and Blue Racing's Denim and Pearls (Into Mischief), who sold for $500,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale. The Brad Cox trainee is a full-sister to GIII Robert B. Lewis S. hero Newgate.

Whitham Thoroughbreds homebred Aunt Fannie (Uncle Mo), trained by Ian Wilkes, is a half-sister to GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. victor McCraken (Ghostzapper) and GIII Dogwood S. winner Four Graces (Majesticperfection). TJCIS PPS

Over the course of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, all 10 Indiana-bred yearlings consigned to the sale went home to new barns and new destinations. The sale, which was breaking records before the second week was complete, saw the total for Indiana-bred yearlings selling totaling $483,500, a record in recent years.

The highest selling Indiana-bred was Hip 829, a yearling by Gormley and out of the Aljbar mare Northern Kraze, bred by Deann and Greg Baer, DVM, and consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency. The flashy filly sold to Tommy Town Thoroughbreds out of Santa Ynez, California, for $125,000 from the fourth session. The filly's half-sister by Jimmy Creed, Krunch, is a black-type stakes winner already earning $241,082 in limited racing at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The second highest seller was Hip 1926, sold to Kenneth McPeek for $75,000. The colt by Kantharos and out of Ice Women (Street Sense) shined on a day where two other Indiana yearlings sold as well.

Jay Oringer, co-owner of 2020 Indiana Horse of the Year Piedi Bianchi purchased a yearling by Good Magic and out of Our Lesmis (Yes It's True) for $30,000. Oringer is excited for the prospect of another top Indiana-bred runner to campaign not only in Indiana, but nationwide, just as he has with the gray mare.

“I was so happy to see Jay purchased our Good Magic filly,” says breeder Dennis Farkas. “He's done such a nice job with Piedi Bianchi.”

Pocket Aces Racing Partnership has entered the regional racing scene by purchasing their first Indiana-bred yearlings at Keeneland September. Agent Marc Wampler had nothing but positive things to say for hip 3319, a filly by Sharp Azteca and by Sarah Elizabeth (Sky Mesa) consigned by Ballysax Bloodstock.

“Hip 3319 ticked all the boxes I was looking for… She is a leggy filly with a forearm-to-canon ratio I associate with a low and long stride,” Wampler says in his notes. “She has just enough strength where she needs it the most, in her hips and her gaskins, while the rest of her body has just enough strength to stay sound and not wear her down over the course of a two-turn race.”

The overall average for the yearlings sold was $48,350, with hopes of more positive gains as the sales season continues. Your next opportunity to purchase quality Indiana-bred and Indiana-sired racehorses is the ITOBA Fall Mixed Sale, to be held Oct. 16 in the Receiving Barn at Indiana Grand in Shelbyville.

Tommy Town Thoroughbreds' Victim of Love made it back-to-back victories in the Grade 3 Vagrancy Handicap on Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., sitting just off pacemaker Sadie Lady and wearing that rival down in the final furlong to win the 71st running of the 6 1/2-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares by 2 1/4 lengths.

Sadie Lady nosed out 3-2 favorite Pacific Gale for second, with Piedi Bianchi and Honor Way completing the order of finish.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=291 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid= data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

A 5-year-old Kentucky-bred mare by Speightstown trained by Todd Beattie, Victim of Love was ridden to victory by Joel Rosario, who was scoring his fourth win of the day. She ran 6 1/2 furlongs on a fast track in 1:17.27 after chasing Sadie Lady through fractions of :23.01, :45.64 and 1:10.50.

Victim of Love paid $6.30 as the second choice in the wagering. She carried 121 pounds, one less than Honor Way and Pacific Gale. The latter, coming off back-to-back graded stakes victories this winter at Gulfstream Park, hopped in the air at the start under John Velazquez, breaking behind the field and then rushing up to each contention in the run down the backstretch.

“She came home really nicely and exploded at the end and I was really proud of that effort,” said Rosario. “She put in a really nice race. She's fast and it was a very good performance.”

Victim of Love began her career for Tommy Town and trainer Henry Dominguez as a 2-year-old in New Mexico, racing first at Zia Park and then at Sunland Park where she broke her maiden in her third start and earned black type next out in the Island Fashion Stakes.

Sent east to Beattie after her sixth start, Victim of Love added the What A Summer Stakes in January 2020 at Laurel, finished second in the G3 Barbara Fritchie and then took the Vagrancy in a 27-1 shocker over odds-on favorite Come Dancing.

She's now won six of 18 starts at seven different racetracks.

“Last year when she came here, she was a big price because she ran badly in the Nellie Morse [going one mile in March 2020 at Laurel Park] when we tried her going longer,” said Beattie. “I tried to rate her, but she wasn't happy about that. She wants to be up there and involved early. That's her number. The distance is perfect. Six and a half or seven furlongs is ideal. She can go a mile, but not at this level.”

Beattie said the Grade 3 Bed O' Roses on June 4 was a possibility but noted that Victim of Love was running without Lasix for the first time in the Vagrancy. “This was new territory for us,” said Beattie. “We're going to figure it out together.”

Getting a perfect trip in third behind dueling pacesetters, Tommy Town Thoroughbreds' California-homebred Stalking Shadow rallied in deep stretch to win Saturday's $100,000 California Derby over Jonathan Wong-trained stablemate Jimmy Irish at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Calif.

The 3-year-old colt by Ministers Wild Cat, ridden by Evin Roman, covered 1 1/16 miles on the synthetic Tapeta surface in 1:45.22 and paid $16.20 to win.

Jimmy Irish held second with the John Shirreffs-trained Parnelli, the 4-5 favorite, third in the field of eight 3-year-olds.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Lost in Space, the second choice in the wagering, broke slowly from the inside post position, allowing Jimmy Irish to secure the lead and the rail under Armando Ayuso. Parnelli and jockey Edwin Maldonado were content to sit just off the leader through fractions of :23.73, :48.72 and 1:12.59 for the first six furlongs, then turned up the pressure on the turn for home, drawing up alongside the leader. Those two had at least six lengths on their closest pursuer, Stalking Shadow, who raced comfortably in third as the field straightened into the stretch.

Stalking Shadow fought off Parnelli and appeared to be home free with a sixteenth to run, the mile clocked in 1:38.59, but Stalking Shadow was gaining momentum and caught and passed Jimmy Irish in the final yards to win going away.

The victory was the first stakes win for Stalking Shadow and his fourth victory overall from nine starts. Runner-up Jimmy irish, owned by McShane Racing, was making just his second start, having graduated at first asking in a 5 1/2-furlong sprint at Golden Gate on April 4.

Last Saturday, June 27, trainer Todd Beattie sent out his first graded stakes winner since 2014 when Victim of Love upset the Grade 3 Vagrancy at odds of 27-1. While her victory may have been a surprise to the bettors, Beattie has long believed that the 4-year-old daughter of Speightstown had the talent to play on the big stage.

“She's really just a hard-trying filly, that's the biggest thing you can take your hat off to her,” Beattie said. “She's a late foal (May 27), so she's been playing catch up a little bit, but her age isn't making such a difference right now. She's been steadily getting a little better, and I can see things where her maturity is really helping her.”

Usually, Beattie prefers to start his own runners as 2-year-olds, doing the groundwork himself and giving his wife, Amanda, a leg up for the babies' first rides. One of his most famous runners was Taris, whom he saddled for a nine-length triumph in the 2014 G2 Raven Run at Keeneland before selling her privately to Coolmore. The mare would later win the Grade 1 Distaff at Churchill Downs in 2016.

Conversely, Victim of Love is a homebred for Tom Stull's Tommy Town Thoroughbreds. The filly began her career in New Mexico, breaking broke her maiden in her third start by 11 3/4 lengths when conditioned by Henry Dominguez. She won the listed Island Fashion Stakes in her next start, in February of 2019, but after finishing off the board in her next two outings, Stull decided to make a change.

“I do a lot of work with Tommy Town, I'm kind of their outlet out here on the East Coast,” explained Beattie. “They wanted to send her here because there would be some more opportunities, and the competition wouldn't be quite as tough as in their California base.

“We've been figuring her out and what distance suits her. Her very best might be that middle distance, 6 1/2 to seven furlongs, and obviously the wet track didn't hurt her, but she can run on a dry track too.”

From his private barn at Penn National, Beattie slowly began teaching Victim of Love to get into her races a little earlier. She won an allowance race at Laurel in October, and two starts later captured the listed What A Summer Stakes at the Maryland oval.

In the Vagrancy coming off a three-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic, Victim of Love broke a bit slowly. She was sent up into the race, then took over at the head of the lane and pulled away to win by 1 3/4 lengths under jockey Jose Lezcano.

“The trainer [Todd Beattie] told me to break and try to keep her busy,” Lezcano said. “She broke a little bit behind, but with a tap on the shoulder, she jumped right there on the bridle. When I asked her, she really took off. My filly kept going the whole way around and never stopped. She gave me everything she had.”

The filly's success suggests she appreciates the quiet, laid-back atmosphere of Beattie's private barn at Penn National.

“I'm 100 percent country boy,” Beattie said. “I've never lived in the city, but I always felt blessed because I get to see it in my rearview mirror when I'm leaving. I live on a mountain and I have a small farm, about 15 minutes away from the racetrack, so I can train on the track and come and go as I please. A guy that really likes the countryside appreciates that kind of lifestyle.”

Born and raised in Antigo, Wisc., the same hometown as Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas, Beattie learned to appreciate Quarter Horses as well. He doesn't train them to race, however. Instead, he and his wife enjoy competing in cutting horse shows, and they use the Quarter Horses as ponies at the track to keep them fit during the week.

“The nice part about training horses at the track is that I always ride a pony and watch the horses train,” Beattie explained. “It works out good that I don't have to go work my cutting horses when it's real hot in the afternoons!”

The entire Beattie family is involved in the horse industry, as well. Of six children, five are full-time with horses, and the sixth enjoys riding cutting horses after her day job. Beattie's sister, Holley, is married to 2-year-old trainer Bryan Rice, and the couple founded Woodside Ranch in Florida. They've developed racehorses like millionaires Hollywood Wildcat and War Chant, and more recently Breeders' Cup Champion Storm the Court, among many others.

After living in Wisconsin during the winters for his entire childhood, Beattie was quick to follow his brothers and sisters to Pennsylvania for year-round racing. Like his family, he particularly enjoys the early stages of training, from the first ride through the first race on the track.

The trainer has saddled over 1,700 winners, but Victim of Love was just Beattie's eighth graded stakes victory. His best horse was millionaire and Grade 1 winner Fabulous Strike.

“I really like to watch the young horses progress, and we start right from scratch,” Beattie explained. “We'll have unbroke horses and I like to develop them and see them get to the next stage. In the past I've had 60-80 horses, and I ended up being a business manager rather than a horse trainer. I prefer to do the training myself, so I try to keep my numbers down within reason, so that way I can have a little bit of a life.”

Of course, coronavirus has made that life look quite a bit different over the past several months. Pennsylvania was one of the last states to get horse events started again, and Beattie is grateful to be able to resume more normal operations. He and his wife have been to three cutting horse shows in the past month, and they've started shipping horses around to run once again.

“Who would have imagined this would have happened in our lifetime?” Beattie said of the pandemic. “It's been really tough trying to hold on, and you're trying to manage your horses. Yeah, you're training them, but you don't have a target you're aiming for, so you try to maintain a little conditioning, but you don't want to tighten them down. Now we feel a little better about getting our horses ready.”
