The single day Tattersalls Cheltenham December Sale came to a close with 15 lots selling for over £100,000, two lots over £300,000 and a top price of £335,000 for lot 8, Tumuch (Fr) (Buck's Boum {Fr}).

After an impressive showing in his debut maiden at Lingstown where he posted an authoritative victory, Tumuch proved a hot commodity as bidding sailed through the ranks with Robbie Power, Tom Malone, Gordon Elliott, and Mouse O'Ryan putting up a spirited battle for the 4-year-old with the last coming out successful.

“He is a lovely horse, he is a well-made horse, who won well. He was very eye-catching. We had seen him in January, and we were waiting for him to run,” said O'Ryan. “We are building up a big team of young horses and they are starting to come to fruition. We have bought a Gold Cup horse out of the point-to-point field–we have only had one, but we'd like another!”

Out of the Maille Pistol dual-winning mare Pistol Girl, a half-sister to the dam of the Grade 2 winner and Grade 1-placed Sir Valentino (Fr) (Early March {GB}), Tumuch was sold by the 2021 Tattersalls Cheltenham December top consignor Ballycrystal Stables.

Wildcard entry Port Joulain (Fr) (Cokoriko {Fr}), consigned by Denis Murphy of Ballyboy Stables as Lot 20, was the second highest price on the evening, bringing £300,000 from Harold Kirk. He hails from the family of 11-time Grade 1 winner Apple's Jade (Fr).

The purchaser said: “He is going to Willie's; he was my pick of the sale. I love the sire, he gets the most winners in France. Apple's Jade is in the pedigree, and I love this horse as an individual. I think he has got loads of class.”

Third highest price on the sale was Belliano (GB) (Black Sam Bellamy {Ire}), lot 18 out of G3 Prix de Flore victress Miliana (Ire), who was bought by Tom Malone and Paul Nicholls for £255,000. This is also the family of G1 Galway Hurdle-placed Mirpour (Ire).

Sustained demand saw the flagship sale produce an aggregate of £3,448,000, a best-ever average of £104,485-up 15 per cent and the first time it has achieved a six-figure sum–and a record median of £85,000, up 26 per cent from last season. The seven Tattersalls Jockey Club Sales held in 2023 achieved a new record for annual aggregate with a turnover of £20,965,500.

William Knight's Rathmoy Stables consigned Swift Hawk (GB) (Hawkbill) and he brought a sale-topping 85,000gns from Tom Malone Bloodstock to lead the way during the Tattersalls Online August Sale which concluded on Thursday.

Sold as lot 16, the 3-year-old gelding has been placed three times from five runs over the turf and all-weather. His dam, Zacheta (GB) (Polish Precedent), has already foaled the dual group winner Ransom Note (GB) (Red Ransom), and another half-sibling is responsible for the Indian stakes winner Murioi (Ind) (Dubawi {Ire}). Under his granddam is three-time Group 1 winner Marienbard (Ire) (Caerleon).

“He's a lovely 3-year old who has good size and scope and he came highly recommended by William Knight,” said Malone. “He was arguably very unfortunate to recently run second to a nice horse of William Haggas's who is now rated 94. He looks the sort who will jump for us and I was very happy to get him.”

Mitch Beer Racing and Heywood Bloodstock signed for Desert Voice (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) at 50,000gns. Lot 28, from William Haggas's Somerville Lodge, sports two wins from four starts and is bound for Australia. Her second dam is the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup winner Shiva (Jpn) (Hector Protector), with four of her daughters foaling black-type winners including G1 Irish Derby runner-up Piz Badile (Ire) (Ulysses {Ire}), and G2 Gimcrack S. hero Threat (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}).

Beer said, “We were looking for fillies and found her. She is a lightly raced, two-time winning filly by Invincible Spirit who needs no introduction down here. We spoke to William Haggas and he recommended her for Australia so it was a no-brainer. There are so many options for her down here and I can't wait to get her home.”

Seraphic (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) (lot 8) was another who found favour with buyers, bringing 37,000gns from Killarney Glen. The Ecurie Hugo Merienne-consigned gelding has been placed under both codes and was last seen winning by 30 lengths.

Altenbach Bloodstock's Lorelei Rock (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) (lot 65) was knocked down for that price by Ladyswood Stud, as well. The stakes-winning mare is pregnant to Havana Grey (GB).

A total of 32 lots sold for a gross of 474,200gns. The average was 14,819gns and the median was 6,500gns.

A 3-year-old bay gelding already named Kalao Coko (Fr) (Cokoriko {Fr}) (lot 214) brought a sale-topping bid of €65,000 from Tom Malone during the Tattersalls Ireland May Store Sale on Tuesday. Malone was the sale's leading buyer.

Consigned by Liss House, he is related to group winner G3 La Coupe winner Ultimately Lucky (Ire) (Kris {GB}), and the Classic-placed Group 3 winner Berine's Son (Irish River {Fr}).

Liss House also offered the day's second-dearest lot–lot 219, Kicour La (Fr) (Nom De d'La {Fr}). Virginia Considine Racing picked up the 3-year-old for €50,000. The gelding's Robin Des Champs (Fr) dam is a half-sister to a pair of winners.

Total turnover stood at €2,396,300 for 168 horses sold at the end of the day. The average was €14,264 and the median was €11,750.

Simon Kerins CEO of Tattersalls Ireland said, “This sale provides vendors the first opportunity to sell their 3-year-olds and the demand for quality individuals remained strong. The footfall seen over the last two days was impressive and we extend our gratitude to the large contingent of Irish and UK buyers who actively participated, alongside many first-time visitors who contributed to the bustling atmosphere at Fairyhouse.

“The early timing of the May Store Sale has always been eagerly anticipated by point-to-point handlers, and this year was no exception with plenty of demand for the choice lots throughout the day.

“Our attention now turns to the highly anticipated market-leading Derby Sale, which takes place on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 June. Our team eagerly anticipates welcoming back our valued clients and presenting the cream of the store sale crop in a catalogue full of quality.”

During a session which saw just 10 horses through the ring fail to change hands, the Ralph Beckett-trained and Juddmonte Farms-owned Fabilis (GB) (Frankel {GB}) fetched 350,000gns to establish a new record at the Tattersalls August Sale in Newmarket. The transaction easily eclipsed the previous top price of 220,000gns from last year's inaugural event.

An own brother to G3 Darley Club S. hero Monarchs Glen (GB) and produced by a half-sister to G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat), Fabilis, cataloged as lot 380, was a maiden winner at second asking at Chepstow last September and added a Nottingham handicap in his next appearance. He most recently took his Timeform rating to 104 with a 1 3/4-length victory going 12 furlongs at Newmarket Aug. 27.

Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock signed the winning ticket and indicated that the 3-year-old colt is off to the Middle East to continue his career.

“He is for Prince Faisal bin Khalid's Najd Stud, a very long established client,” said Doyle. “I bought for his family many years ago. He is a lovely horse, I didn't think he'd make that much, but lots of people liked him. He comes from a very good operation, it is always nice to buy a horse from Juddmonte. The horse passed all the vets very well. The immediate plan will be to go and race in Saudi Arabia and aim for the Crown Prince Cup. We have had some success in the race before.”

Underbidders included would-be suitors from Australia and others from the Gulf region.

Mark Johnston trainee Zabeel Champion (GB) (Poet's Voice {GB}), lot 411, achieved the session's second-highest price when Mags O'Toole, bidding on behalf of National Hunt bloodstock agent Tom Malone, paid 185,000gns for the 4-year-old colt. Previously campaigned by Jaber Abdullah, the bay hit a rich vein of form this spring, winning consecutive events at Ripon before adding a vaulable Newmaket handicap May 2. Also third in the Duke of Edinburgh S. (handicap) at the Royal Meeting June 18, Zabeel Champion was offered with a TF rating of 112.

“A real champion. He is a big scopey horse, just our type of horse a chaser in the making,” Malone messaged Tattersalls after landing in Germany. “He came highly recommended and the owners weren't going to release him too lightly. He ticks a lot of boxes, he showed a lovely pace over 1m2f to win at Ripon, stayed 1m4f on heavy ground at Royal Ascot. A beautiful pedigree, so fingers crossed he goes on and does our job as a novice over jumps. He goes to Ditcheat.”

While strict comparisons to last year's horses-of-racing-age sales are difficult, given the circumstances under which the 2020 renewal was held, the combined turnover of 18 million guineas for this year was well above last year's turnover of 14,371,000gns.

“Last year's inaugural Tattersalls August Sale, which was born out of COVID-related disruption to the racing calendar, was a huge success and the second renewal has returned figures which suggest that the fixture very much has a long-term future,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. “With the recent July Sale returning to its customary numbers, the August catalogue was significantly smaller than last year, but the vibrance and extraordinary level of international participation which are the hallmarks of sales of this nature at Tattersalls have been in evidence from start to finish. Buyers from throughout Europe, the Gulf region, Australia and the USA have added to the strong domestic participation and we have yet again hosted a sale which has achieved a clearance rate in excess of 90% and generated sustained demand in all sectors of the market.”

He added, “Equally pleasing has been the fact that the August Sale has seen a return almost to normality after more than a year of staging sales which have been hampered by COVID-related protocols. It has been a real pleasure to have welcomed so many people back to Park Paddocks as we turn our attention to the Tattersalls yearling sales season starting with the Somerville Yearling Sale next week.”

Recent Group 3 winner Adrian (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}) was the top-priced lot at €110,000 at the BBAG's first August horses in training sale, which was incorporated to target horses with high levels of form and entries in Baden-Baden's feature meeting that runs from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1. Adrian (lot 2), a 4-year-old entire, was picked up by Tom Malone. Trained thus far by Henk Grewe for Gestut Auenquelle, Adrian was a listed winner last year at three going 2200 metres and has won two black-type races this year, most recently the 2400 metre G3 Furstenberg-Rennen on July 18.

There were a high number of buybacks out of the boutique sale, including the two horses that drew the highest bids of the day: French listed-winning 2-year-old Best Sixteen (Fr) (Penny's Picnic {Ire}) (lot 26), who was led out unsold at €210,000, and the listed-winning 4-year-old Only The Brave (Fr) (Iffraaj {GB}) (lot 7), who was bought back at €140,000. Of those sold, the next highest price was €34,000 for Sir Vulcano (Ger) (Polish Vulcano {Ger}) (lot 40), who has run four times this year for trainer Andreas Wohler.

A last-minute change of local Covid regulations in Ireland has led to British buyers already in the country for the Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale being unable to attend the sales complex at Fairyhouse.

The company's major sale of National Hunt store horses gets underway at 11am on Wednesday and continues through Thursday, but those who had already travelled across the Irish Sea under strict protocols which included a 'bubble' for visitors from Britain, can no longer participate in person.

Bloodstock agent Tom Malone vented his frustration on social media on Tuesday evening upon hearing the news, having already spent two days viewing the young jumping stock on the sales grounds.

He told TDN on Wednesday morning, “First of all, Tatts have done everything within their power to make sure that it goes ahead but unfortunately they are dealing with local authorities and, at the last minute, which was yesterday afternoon, they said that the English bubble does now not apply at the sales complex and if it goes ahead they would cancel everything. None of us would do that to anyone else. We are all in this industry together and we just have to work on and get it done.”

Malone said that he will now be following the sale online and liaising with Mags O'Toole on the ground at Fairyhouse. He continued, “It's frustrating. I've done all my work so it's not the end of the world for me because I have seen everything I want. But my business runs on being active on the ground, and if I am not on the ground I am definitely going to be 50% less active, because when I'm there I'll buy.

“The people who have done this don't realise the ramifications of what they have done but unfortunately it can't be changed now, and what it means for the sales coming up I don't know.”

Around 100 people had travelled from Britain to attend the sale and have been staying together in a hotel under the bubble arrangement which allows for travel between the sales ground and the hotel only.

Malone, an Irish-born former jump jockey now resident in the south-west of England added, “You come in clean with a PCR test. I've had a jab and I am doing everything I'm told to do to run my business, but out of Tatts' hands someone is ruining it for us all. But that's just where we find ourselves.

“Niamh Spiller and Mary Lanigan and all their team [at Tattersalls Ireland] have done phenomenal work late into the night making sure everyone was catered for. I feel for them. They've done everything they can.”
