As the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale moves into its second week, Spendthrift Farm's Vino Rosso has emerged as one of the early stars among the first-crop weanling sires.

The Breeders' Cup Classic-winning son of Curlin was responsible for the auction's most expensive first-crop weanling through the auction's first three sessions, and has established himself as one of the rookie stallions with the highest average weanling sale price during the select sessions of Kentucky's fall mixed sales.

In this installment of Toast To Vino Rosso, we'll look at a pair of weanlings by the stallion from the Gainesway consignment. One turned heads in the sale ring on Friday with a six-figure hammer price, while the other will get her chance to shine during Sunday's session.

Hip 645 – Bay filly out of Shaken, by Uncle Mo

The second-most expensive Vino Rosso weanling of the Keeneland sale through the end of Friday's session went to Scoot Stable for $300,000.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Bred in Kentucky by Mark Stansell, the bay filly is the first foal out of the Grade 2-placed Uncle Mo mare Shaken, who is herself a half-sister to the multiple Grade 2-placed runner Sway Away.

We checked in on this filly back in May, when she was boarded at Waggoner Farm in Lexington, Ky., for Texas-based Stansell. At the time, he said the decision to send Shaken to Vino Rosso was based on the stallion's race record and his expectation that the first foals would be received well at auction.

Brian Graves of consignor Gainesway was quick to note the filly's quality after the fall of the hammer.

“The Vino Rosso that we sold was just a really beautiful filly,” he said. “She'd be a select session-type filly at any sale she'd go to. She's beautifully-balanced, great hip. We've seen quite a few Vino Rossos that we liked over the sale, so the stallion looks like he's off to a good start producing nice stock.”

Hip 1469 – Gray or roan filly out of Snagglepuss, by Holy Bull

Sunday's session will feature this filly out of the winning Holy Bull mare Snagglepuss, who is the dam of one winner from two runners.

Bred in Kentucky by Tami Bobo, the filly hails from the family of Grade 1-placed Colorful Charades. The mating that produced this foal was set up by Milan Kosanovich, and Bobo acquired the pregnant mare after her visit to Vino Rosso.

“She's a beautiful filly, very forward, always loved her,” Bobo said. “I thought the market might be one that would support a filly that's physically as presentable as her to maybe come and try early, and see if the market plays where I think it should play. I think she's a great specimen for the stallion.”

“As a group overall, I like the Vino Rossos,” Bobo continued. “Collectively, they've been a great group of horses, and I think the public's going to receive them well. In hindsight, I think I probably should have been earlier than later, but I played it safe and was busy with real estate, and really hadn't gone through my babies like I should have early enough. Sale deadline time came up, so I called my two consignors and said, 'Enter all my horses in Book 3.' Hopefully she's a standout where she's at, and hopefully the public sees what we see in her.”

Vino Rosso, a 6-year-old son of Curlin, stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $20,000.

Vino Rosso won six of 15 starts and earned $4,803,125 on the racetrack. In addition to his signature Breeders' Cup Classic score, the stallion picked up victories in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes, and the G2 Wood Memorial Stakes.

Two years ago, the Gunther family's Glennwood Farm celebrated another graduate grabbing one of the sport's brass rings, when Vino Rosso kicked away down the Santa Anita Park stretch to win the 2019 Breeders' Cup Classic by four lengths.

The win propelled the son of Curlin to an Eclipse Award for champion older male, and a stall in the stallion barn at Spendthrift Farm.

In the span of just two years, the Glennwood operation had produced two blue-chip stallion prospects, following Justify's Triple Crown conquest a year earlier.

“Vino Rosso and Justify were field-mates as foals so it was pretty special to see both horses run in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont in 2018,” said Glennwood's Tanya Gunther. “After being in the shadow of Justify as a 3-year-old, it was very rewarding to see Vino Rosso mature into a dual Grade 1 winner, culminating with an emphatic victory in the Classic in 2019 as a 4-year-old. We have supported both stallions since they retired to stud and can't wait for the progeny to come of racing age. Exciting years ahead.”

Now, with another Breeders' Cup recently in the books, Vino Rosso's first weanlings have arrived at the sales grounds for the Kentucky fall mixed sales. After playing such a key role in Vino Rosso's early life, Glennwood Farm will play a key role in his early stud career.

The Glennwood Farm consignment will offer a pair of colts from the first crop of Vino Rosso during the Keeneland November sale, both in the prestigious first book. They will be part of the 41 Vino Rosso weanlings cataloged in the Keeneland sale, following the five entered across town at the Fasig-Tipton sale.

Hip 73 – Colt out of Bending Strings, by American Chance

This dark bay or brown colt is out of a four-time graded stakes winner, in Bending Strings.

A Glennwood homebred, Bending Strings was a standout sprinter, notching wins in the G2 Nassau County Breeders' Cup Stakes, the G2 First Flight Handicap, and the G3 Safely Kept Breeders' Cup Stakes. She also picked up a graded stakes score at a mile in the Grade 2 Chilukki Stakes.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

As a broodmare, Bending Strings' resume is highlighted by Sun Studio, a stakes-placed Speightstown filly. She is also the dam of the stakes-producing Tapit mare Delightful Melody, who has the stakes winner Arzak.

His second dam, Straight South, is also a stakes winner with four black type-producing daughters. The standouts under that branch of the tree are Get It Straight, dam of Grade 3 winner Bangkok, and Rich Seam, who had a pair of stakes winners.

“We have been very pleased with our Vino babies so far and there seems to be a great buzz about his first foals,” Gunther said. “Curlin is one of our favorite proven stallions in the U.S., so with Vino Rosso being arguably Curlin's most credentialed son at stud, we eagerly await his freshman year as a sire.

“Our Vino foals of 2021 have great balance and nice big walks which is highly encouraging and they seem to have a lot of quality about them,” she continued. “We also think Spendthrift started Vino out at a very competitive price – to be able to breed to a Breeders' Cup Classic and Eclipse Award-winning son of Curlin for $30,000 in his first year seemed phenomenal value for a new sire.”

Hip 112 – Colt out of Fair Huntress, by Tiznow

The third foal out of Fair Huntress, an unraced mare purchased by Glennwood's John Gunther at the 2017 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale.

Fair Huntress comes from a strong producing dam herself, in the stakes-placed Devil His Due mare Beauty's Due. Her most proven daughter in the breeding shed is the Grade 3 winner Devil By Design, who had the Grade 1 winner Competitionofideas.

“We believed Vino would suit the two mares well physically and were very happy when the stork arrived with these two nice packages,” Gunther said. “Both are bays, which doesn't reflect Vino's coloring per se, but they do have good swagger and nice temperaments, which remind us of him. And of course, Vino's sire Curlin has a couple of bays among his top horses – Malathaat and Clairiere for example, who both ran in this year's Breeders' Cup Distaff.”

Vino Rosso, a 6-year-old son of Curlin, stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $25,000.

Vino Rosso has five weanlings cataloged for this year's Fasig-Tipton November sale, tied for the second most among first-year stallions.

We caught up with a couple of Vino Rosso's debut yearlings at Fasig-Tipton to find out more about their backgrounds and discuss them with their consignors.

Hip 106 – Colt out of Silk Road, by Giant's Causeway

Dam Silk Road has gotten off to a fast start as a broodmare, producing two winners from three foals to race, including the Grade 3-placed Seve's Road.

Silk Road is herself a sibling to three other black type producers, including the Grade 1 winner Summer Colony. The page includes a strong Japanese influence in the form of champion Still In Love and seven-figure earner Shonan Rise. Panamanian Horse of the Year Smart D N A is also in the extended family.

The colt was bred in Texas by Paul Pruett, who purchased the dam pregnant with this colt at last year's Keeneland November sale.

“The one we have here is exceptional,” said Jay Goodwin of consignor Eaton Sales. “He's got a great body, and a lot of leg and some stretch, but he still looks fast, a lot like his father looks. He's just what you'd be thinking to get and hoping to get. I'm glad we've got this one, and I think he'll be one of the best ones in the sale.”

Hip 114 – Colt out of Storm Raven, by Bodemeister

The second foal out of Storm Raven, who was a winner at age two.

The page under this colt is filled with black type. Stakes-winning second dam Crystal Current has produced three stakes-placed runners, including Grade 3-placed Crystal Glacier.

His third and fourth dams are both Grade 1 winners, with third dam Dream Supreme producing Grade 1 winner Majestic Warrior and Grade 3 winner Evolutionist. The colt's fourth dam is the Grade 1 winner Spinning Round, who is the pivot point for runners including Argentine Derby winner Kung Fu Mambo and Argentine Group 1 winner Sweet Sorrel.

The colt was bred in Ohio by Smokin C LLC.

“He's a really nice colt, very well balanced,” said Carl McEntee of consignor Ballysax Bloodstock. “He's got plenty of leg underneath him. The mare is good-sized herself, and a winner at two. He's obviously from a very good family. He covers the ground very nicely, he's got a good step and good stride to him. He's a very mentally sound horse, and we're delighted for the owner that he has him.”

Vino Rosso, a 6-year-old son of Curlin, stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $25,000.

Throughout the breeding season, the Paulick Report will be sharing photos of foals from the first crop of Spendthrift Farm's Breeders' Cup Classic winner Vino Rosso in the “Toast to Vino Rosso” series.

This week, we're going to Mulholland Springs farm in Lexington, Ky., to visit a colt out of the To Honor and Serve mare Call to Service.

This February 16 foal was bred in New York by the partnership of Sequel Thoroughbreds, Lakland Farm, and Mark Toothaker, and the dam is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Isotherm.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

This foal is being boarded for clients, but Martha Jane Mulholland of Mulholland Springs said she's got several Vino Rosso foals of her own, and she was impressed by their consistency.

“You can just count on them being a very substantial, viable, good-looking foal,” Mulholland said. “To me, 'pretty' is important, and all of his babies are pretty – cute heads, lovely top lines, big hips. I really, across the board, like all of them.”

Vino Rosso, a 6-year-old son of Curlin, stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $25,000.

Vino Rosso won won six of 15 starts and earned $4,803,125 on the racetrack. In addition to his signature Breeders' Cup Classic score, the stallion picked up victories in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes, and the G2 Wood Memorial Stakes.

This time around, we're going back to Elm Tree Farm in Paris, Ky. to visit a colt out of the Majesticperfection mare Maggie Maggie.

This is a Feb. 20 foal, bred by Nancy Shuford, from the family of Grade 3 winner Poker Player.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Elm Tree Farm's Jody Huckabay has been a big believer in Vino Rosso from the jump. Speaking with Huckabay earlier this year, he said he had five foaling out on the farm this season, between his own and for clients. He was so impressed by the first couple that hit the ground in the early months of the year, he bought a couple more seasons to the stallion in 2021.

Huckabay said he was big on the leg Vino Rosso was putting onto his foals. Looking at the scope of the stallion himself and the other foals we've seen in this series, it's clear Vino Rosso is defining his stamp quickly.

In a busy news week – the aftermath of Saturday's Kentucky Derby and a look ahead to the May 15 Preakness Stakes – the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame unveiled its 2021 class of inductees: seven-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and 13-time champion steeplechase trainer Jack FIsher.

In this week's edition of the Friday Show, publisher Ray Paulick, news editor Chelsea Hackbarth and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills touch on those inductees and look ahead to the list of potential candidates for the 2022 Hall of Fame ballot – and Ray has a meltdown over one 2021 candidate who did not get enough votes for induction.

In his weekly Toast to Vino Rosso, Joe introduces us to another first-crop foal sired by Spendthrift Farm's Breeders' Cup Classic-winning son of Curlin. Finally, the team congratulates the ageless John Velazquez in our Star of the Week segment for his victories in the Kentucky Oaks and Derby and his ongoing commitment to his fellow riders through his work with the Jockeys' Guild and as a newly appointed member of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's standing committee on racetrack safety.

Throughout the breeding season, the Paulick Report will be sharing photos of foals from the first crop of Spendthrift Farm's Breeders' Cup Classic winner Vino Rosso in the “Toast to Vino Rosso” series.

This time around, we're looking at a filly out of the Grade 2-placed Uncle Mo mare Shaken.

This filly was born on Feb. 7, bred in Kentucky by Mark Stansell and boarded at Waggoner Farm in Lexington.

“She's exceptional,” Stansell said last week. “I just flew in from Texas, and we'll be carrying her home tomorrow. She's a very exceptional filly. It seems like every day, she gets better.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The filly is the second foal out of Shaken, whose family includes Grade 2-placed Sway Away and Grade 3-placed Knights Cross.

Stansell said the decision to send Shaken to Vino Rosso wasn't complicated. He expected the way the stallion proved himself on the racetrack would make his foals commercially attractive.

“Vino Rosso was a champion,” he said. “He's going to be very commercially sought-after horse. If you have a good individual, he was made on the track, so I expect his foals will be well-received this November.”

It's been 30 years since the American Association of Equine Practitioners first began providing veterinary expertise to nationally televised horse races in the event of injury to a participant or the need to have questions answered relative to a horse's well being.

In this week's edition of The Friday Show, equine surgeon Dr. Alan Ruggles, who will be the AAEP's On Call veterinarian for this year's Kentucky Derby telecast on NBC Sports, provides some perspective on the program and the On Call vet's role in communicating important information to both the television audience and to reporters from around the world who are at Churchill Downs to cover this year's extravaganza. A partner at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., Ruggles also outlines some of the things going on behind the scenes to make racing as safe as possible for equine and human athletes alike. Please join publisher Ray Paulick and editor-in-chief Natalie Voss for the discussion.
