18.10 Tipperary, Cond, €18,000, 2yo, 7f 100yT
BREMEN (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is one of three newcomers in this Glenvale Stud Race, with Donnacha O'Brien happy to pitch him in against Vincent Gaul's impressive Roscommon maiden winner Spanish Flame (Ire) (Phoenix Of Spain {Ire}) and Ballydoyle's Curragh third Portland (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a son of the G2 Debutante S.-placed Zagitova (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Bremen, the sixth foul out of the triple Australian group 1 heroine Sea Siren (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), is a full-brother to last month's G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Warm Heart (Ire) so might need more time to be seen to best effect.

HOW THEY FARED
7.50 Roscommon, Listed, €40,000, 3yo/up, 11f 154yT
Espionage (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the son of the G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Even Song (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) who was second in the G1 Criterium International in October, was not flashy in this winning return but could turn out one of Ballydoyle's St Leger prospects now he is back on track.

GAIN The Advantage Series will continue to be supported by Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) and GAIN Equine Nutrition for the third consecutive year. Last year's series was won jointly by trainers Pat Martin and Kevin Coleman, who shared an overall league prize of €5,000 worth of GAIN equine products.

After two successful years, this year there will be an added race at Tramore Racecourse. The race will be restricted to horses owned by a syndicate or racing club to support and encourage the growth in this area, and like the other races in the series will benefit from a 50% increase in prize-money. Each trainer will receive points for their successes over the course of the series through a grading process designed to give equal opportunity to each trainer to win the overall prize. The number of points per win or placing at each leg will be based on the number of winners the trainer recorded throughout 2022.

“I think the series has grown in strength over the past two years because it acknowledges not only the owner with the increased prize-money, but also the trainer with the league table, the breeder and the hard-working stable staff,” Philip Gilligan, Irish Country Manager, GAIN Equine Nutrition, said.

The series will commence at Cork Racecourse on Apr. 21 and then proceed to Navan, Ballinrobe, Tramore, Tipperary, Killarney, Naas, and Fairyhouse with the final at Leopardstown.

One thousand winners and counting. Joseph O'Brien passed yet another important milestone in his training career on Saturday when Al Riffa (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) became his 1,000th winner in the opening seven-furlong maiden at the Curragh.

And what style it was achieved in. Al Riffa, who emerged as a major eye-catcher when staying on for second in a Curragh maiden last month, showed the benefit of that initial outing to confirm himself a potential top-notcher in the making.

It was just over six years ago when O'Brien enjoyed a dream start to his career as a trainer when, on June 6, 2016, he sent out four winners on his first day with runners.

While O'Brien trained Ivanovich Gorbatov (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) to win the 2016 Triumph Hurdle in all but name, he didn't have to wait long to enjoy official top-flight success when Intricately (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) stormed to G1 Moyglare S. glory under his brother Donnacha later that summer.

But it was another winner partnered by Donnacha, the Irish Derby success of Latrobe (Ire) in 2018, that was put forward as the highlight of the first 1,000 winners by the trainer, who credited the team at Owning Hill when passing the important milestone.

O'Brien said, “It's a testimony to the team of people we have assembled on the hill. We have an amazing team of staff and they work hard every day. As well as that, we have been supported by brilliant owners all over the world and we're very appreciative of that. We're looking forward to the rest of the season now.”

He added, “I think Latrobe winning the Irish Derby with Donnacha riding him was the highlight [of the first 1,000 winners]. Obviously we have been lucky to win a lot of big races all over the world but, for Donnacha to ride a Classic winner for us, it will be very hard to ever top that.”

Featuring among O'Brien's 1,000 winners are the Melbourne Cups achieved with Twilight Payment (Ire) and Rekindling (GB), a Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf victory with Iridessa (Ire) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}), St Leger glory with Galileo Chrome (Ire) and multiple Group 1 wins with State Of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), including the Saratoga Derby, the Cox Plate and more recently the Prince Of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot.

O'Brien, whose father Aidan hit the 1,000-winner mark within five years of taking out his licence, has also trained a number of top-level winners over jumps, highlighted by Edwulf (GB) (Kayf Tara {GB}) in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown and Cheltenham festival scorers Band Of Outlaws (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}), Early Doors (Fr) (Soldier Of Fortune {Ire}) and Banbridge (Ire) (Doyen {Ire}).

Asked what drives him, the 29-year-old said, “We love winning races and that's what it comes down to. I have grown up in that environment and, when we win races, it puts everyone in good form in the yard and at home. That's what we get up every day to do – to win as many races as we can. That's the life we live and we put everything into it.”

While the ever-resilient bloodstock industry barely flinched in the face of a global pandemic–the return of sky-high prices in the sales ring testament to that–the travel industry slowed to a grinding halt.

However, with the news that–whisper it–the world has fully reopened, there's never been a better time to dust off the suitcase and begin planning trips away again. And if it's Ireland you're thinking of, Tipperary might just have the answer, for waiting patiently in the starting stalls is John Magnier's most exciting new prospect.

We're not talking about the Saxon Warrior 2-year-olds burning up the gallops down the road at Ballydoyle, but rather the Cashel Palace, opening on Mar. 1 and a Palladian manor, lovingly restored and reimagined to be a 42-room hotel with a ballroom and luxury spa attached.

Under the reins of Adriaan Bartels, leader of this passion project since the first plans were laid in 2017 right up until the first guest walks through the doors in March and beyond, one can't help but think that Magnier has found a very safe pair of hands. The former general manager at two of Ireland's finest hotels, Bartels says, “This is truly a dream job. It has been fantastic to be a part of a project like this from the start, working closely with Mrs Magnier and Jerome Casey to create a hotel that is just as we want it. We're really excited to throw open the doors now and for guests to see it for themselves.

He continues, “The Cashel Palace offers something that is entirely unique as it's located between town and countryside, giving visitors the opportunity to explore both. Obviously, the thriving Thoroughbred industry on our doorstep is a great asset but Tipperary has a lot more to offer in addition. When it comes to outdoor pursuits, there is no end of spectacular scenery if hiking is your thing, and the hotel also has private fishing rights along the River Suir which guests can avail of. Irish culture runs richly throughout the county and for the history buffs, there are a number of monuments in the area which have great stories to tell.”

None more so than the Rock of Cashel, providing an epic vista from the palace grounds; the most spectacular cluster of medieval buildings in Ireland and more iconic in religious terms than even St Mark's Basilica. The cathedral, not the horse, that is, although there'll be plenty in these parts praying that he too becomes an icon.

On the subject of stallions, the relationship between Coolmore and Cashel Palace is well acknowledged and, at a level, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy “Equine Experiences” that allow them into the stud and even the hallowed training grounds of Ballydoyle.

Indeed, the hotel's association with the racing world is longstanding. In the 1980's a certain Vincent O'Brien was proprietor and the Guinness Bar became a regular haunt for racegoers to enjoy a pint of the “black stuff” on their way home. Revellers will be delighted to learn that the same bar has been restored to its former glory, alongside the original Bishop's Buttery for those with a taste for fine-dining.

“We're spoilt to be situated in Tipperary's Golden Vale which is filled with great food producers, providing the country's natural larder,” Bartels adds. “As far as possible, we'll be using local produce across all of our eateries and we hope to offer guests a wide variety of options. There'll be fine-cuisine in The Bishop's Buttery, Afternoon Tea served in the Queen Anne Room or a more casual dining experience in the already well-established Mikey Ryan's next door.”

Another trump card in the palace's armoury is undoubtedly The Spa which, as well as treatment rooms, includes an indoor/outdoor swimming pool and seaweed baths overlooking the Rock of Cashel. And as for the spa products, they are by Bamford; the creation of another great racing family who have paved the way in hospitality excellence with their growing Daylesford empire in the UK.

Of course, this isn't Magnier's first dalliance into the hotel industry either. The Sandy Lane, a jewel on the Barbadian coastline, is another under his ownership with partners Dermot Desmond and JP McManus, regularly playing host to the great and the good.

While the white sands of Barbados might be a long way from Tipperary, in the Cashel Palace you'll find a rural retreat at a standard that is synonymous with the Magnier family's way of doing things.

Continuing her upward trajectory on Thursday, Haras de Saint Pair's Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) defied a three-pound penalty for her July 11 G3 Brownstown S. success in style in Tipperary's G3 Coolmore Stud No Nay Never Fairy Bridge S. Always travelling strongly racing behind the pace, the 5-2 second favourite was angled off the fence by Billy Lee straightening for home and after delivering her potent turn of acceleration recorded a comprehensive 1 3/4-length defeat of Roca Roma (Ire) (Australia {GB}). “She was in great form when she won the Brownstown and I said we'd go straight for the Matron,” trainer Paddy Twomey said. “She was in great form at home and I felt it would be unwise to bypass this one on our doorstep. I thought if she could do what she did there then we could have a crack at a group 1. I felt it might be a bit fanciful if we hadn't done something like that. She's earned her shot wherever it might be.”

Runner-up to Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) when this was staged at Gowran Park in September, Pearls Galore had finished fifth in the Listed Cooley Fillies & Mares S. at a mile on Dundalk's Polytrack in November before returning to be third in the G3 Ballycorus S. over seven at Leopardstown June 10. Building on her Brownstown success at Fairyhouse, the diminutive granddaughter of Haras de Saint Pair's foundation mare Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}) looked every bit ready to attempt to emulate Champers Elysees in the highest category. Twomey revealed that she has three top-level alternatives. “The [Sept. 11] Matron [at Leopardstown], the [Oct. 3 Prix de la] Foret [at ParisLongchamp] and the First Lady in Keeneland on the 8th of October are all options and Keeneland would suit her. It's a quick, tight mile but we'll leave the dust settle and come up with a plan. She's bred by Andreas Putsch who races her and raced all her family. I think we're obliged to go for a group 1 now. She won't run next year, so I'd say another run and that will be it.”

Pearls Galore's dam is the German group 3 winner Pearl Banks (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), whose prior black-type performers are Lucky Lycra (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), who scored at the same level in the same country, and the Listed Prix des Lilas winner Pearly Steph (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}). The aforementioned second dam, the G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Pearly Shells, was also responsible for the Listed Prix Panacee winner Pearls Or Passion (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}) who is in turn the dam of the G3 Prix de Royaumont scorer Pelligrina (Ire) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) and the listed-placed Podemos (Ger) (Shamardal). Pearl Banks is also a half-sister to two other black-type performers including this year's G2 Prix Greffulhe runner-up Smile Makers (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) and to Propaganda (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), who in turn produced the G3 May Hill S. third Shagah (Ire) from a mating with Pearls Galore's sire Invincible Spirit. Pearl Banks has an as-yet unnamed 2-year-old filly by Dark Angel (Ire) and a yearling colt by Shalaa (Ire).

The second highest-priced lot at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 at 2.8million gns, the Aidan O'Brien-trained bay is joined by stablemate West Coast (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), a half-sister to the G2 Rockfel S. winner Just Wonderful (Dansili {GB}) out of another winner of that race in Wading (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) who is in turn a full-sister to Bracelet (Ire) and a half to Athena (Ire) by Montjeu's son Camelot (GB).

Trainer Stephen Mahon, who was banned in June for a period of four years for animal neglect, will be investigated by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) after allegedly interfering with the post-race sample collection of one of his former horses, the Racing Post reported on Sunday evening. Stormey (Ire) (September Storm {Ger}), a horse formerly trained by Mahon, ran third in the Tipperary Racecourse Beginners Chase. The incident took place at Tipperary and was reported to the stewards by IHRB veterinary assistant Avena O'Keeffe. She alleged that Mahon “was interfering in the sampling process by insisting that she turn the tumbler used to collect the urine sample upside down to prove that there was nothing in it, prior to the sample being taken,” according to the stewards' report of the incident. Mahon was at the racecourse acting as Stormey's trainer Patrick Kelly's traveling head lad and authorised representative, according to the report. The incident was referred to the IHRB Chief Executive Denis Egan.

4.40 Tipperary, Mdn, €5,500, 2yo, f, 5fT
YET (War Front) is the first foal out of what could prove to be an important broodmare for Coolmore in the dual Group 3-placed Butterflies (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a daughter of Mariah's Storm (Rahy). Therefore a half-sister to Giant's Causeway and his full-sibling You'resothrilling, Butterflies is therefore connected to Galileo's Gleneagles (Ire), Marvellous (Ire) and Happily (Ire).
