The Thoroughbred of the Year Award recognizes a Thoroughbred that has excelled in a non-competitive career, such as equine-assisted therapy or police work.

The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) Is hosting two championship shows in 2022, both held this month. The T.I.P. Championships & Eastern Dressage Championships are taking place Oct. 6-9 in Aiken, South Carolina, and the T.I.P. Western Championships & Central Dressage Championships are scheduled for Oct. 12-15 in Lexington, Kentucky, in conjunction with the Retired Racehorse Project's Thoroughbred Makeover.

Nearly 350 Thoroughbreds are slated to compete in 38 divisions. Each division will be awarded $2,000 in prize money with awards through 10th place and special classes will be held for horses that have started 50 or more times, have won more than $100,000 in earnings, or were adopted from Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance-accredited organizations or Thoroughbred Charities of America grantees.

“We are excited to expand a full T.I.P. championship horse show to two locations in 2022 after offering just a barrel racing division in Kentucky in 2021,” said Kristin Werner, senior counsel for The Jockey Club and administrator of T.I.P. “Splitting the disciplines between both facilities will allow us to better highlight the versatility of the Thoroughbred in a range of disciplines; it will also allow even more competitors to show off their mounts.”

The South Carolina show is being held at Stable View Equestrian Center and will feature hunter, jumper, English pleasure, dressage, combined test, and English in-hand competition. The Kentucky show will take place at the Kentucky Horse Park and will host dressage, Western dressage, barrel racing, Western pleasure, Western halter, ranch riding, and competitive trail competition.

The Jockey Club (TJC) Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) has announced the 2022 recipients of its two non-competition awards, the T.I.P. Thoroughbred of the Year Award and the T.I.P. Young Rider of the Year Award.

The Thoroughbred of the Year Award, which recognizes a Thoroughbred that has excelled in a non-competitive career, such as equine-assisted therapy or police work, goes to “River,” a mare born in 2000 and raced as Teen Dancer (Mt. Magazine). River is a therapy horse at CORRAL, a nonprofit that equips adolescent girls in high-risk situations through a long-term, holistic program of equine therapy and education. The award includes a $5,000 grant to CORRAL.

“Like so many of our youth, River was rejected time and time again from her foster homes. It wasn't until she came to CORRAL that she found her forever home,” said Joy Currey, founder and executive director of CORRAL. “Now she helps young women find a place they can call their 'home-away-from-home' where they can access their bright, bright futures. River's intense spirit matches well with our rigorous college-preparatory environment and teaches our girls that they are capable of so much more than the world expects of them.”

Recipients of the Young Rider of the Year Award are Ashlynn Riley, Andie Sue Roth, and Erika Williams. The award recognizes riders 18 or younger who own or lease a Thoroughbred for use in 4-H, Pony Club, or other activities.

Riley, a T.I.P. ambassador, owns and events Mr Pappagiorgio (Holy Bull; barn name “George”) and will use her award to help with tuition of her online veterinary technician program at Penn Foster University and for training with George.

Roth uses Cape Royal (Anziyan Royalty) to do dressage. A Paralympic hopeful, Roth plans to use her award to continue training with Lisa Hellmer, the U.S. Para Equestrian Development Coach, in Ocala.

Williams owns and rides House of Troy (Distorted Humor; barn name “Troy”). She plans to use her award to ship Troy from her home in California to her college in Kentucky.

The Take2 Second Career Thoroughbred Program is celebrating its 10th year with a “Give 110 Percent!” campaign to raise $10,000 a month for 10 months. The ultimate goal is to reach $100,000 in donations by the end of the year. To help kick start the initiative, racehorse owner and entrepreneur Len Green has donated $10,000 to the campaign.

“I've been in the Thoroughbred industry for almost 50 years as the founder of both DJ Stable and The Green Group,” Green explained. “I have witnessed firsthand the extraordinary work by TAKE2 and their dedicated team. Their primary focus is to ensure that our horses get the best care once their racing careers are completed. I support TAKE2 and cannot thank them enough for all the work they do.”

TAKE2 Executive Director Andy Belfiore added, “We are extremely grateful to Len Green and his team for getting our campaign off the ground. Without the support of Thoroughbred lovers from the racing and sport horse worlds, we would not be able to continue our mission of promoting second careers for retired racehorses. Our horses give us 110% on the racetrack and in the show ring; we hope members of our TAKE2 family will give what they can, whether it is $10 or $10,000, to help us reach our goal.”

TAKE2 was created by the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (NYTHA), in partnership with the New York Thoroughbred Breeders (NYTB). Any registered Thoroughbred can compete for thousands of dollars in prize money in TAKE2-affiliated Thoroughbred-only hunter and jumper divisions at more than 400 horse shows across the country. TAKE2 Thoroughbred League members are eligible for $10,000 in year-end High Score Awards, and for the $20,000 TAKE2 Hunter and Jumper Finals, to be held this year at the Kentucky National Horse Show Sept. 21-25.

In 10 years, TAKE2 has given out more than $1 million in awards and prize money supporting hunter/jumper competitions nationwide, with an estimated 2,000 horses competing in the TAKE2 divisions since its inception.

“Years ago, the Thoroughbred was king in the show ring, but the Warmbloods gained popularity,” said TAKE2 President and NYTHA Vice President Rick Schosberg. “Programs like TAKE2, RRP (Retired Racehorse Project) and TIP (Thoroughbred Incentive Program) demonstrate that Thoroughbreds have so much more to give after they leave the track–their competitive lives are far from over.

“I think our combined efforts are making a difference,” he added. “There is more demand for Thoroughbreds, more enthusiasm from the owners and riders and trainers in the hunter/jumper world, and that makes it easier to find homes for retired racehorses.”
