“The Thoroughbred Club of America is delighted to name Richard Mandella as its 2023 Honor Guest”, said Boden. “Richard is a shining example of what past generations traditionally thought of when they considered what a great trainer is–a real “throwback” who has never had more than 40 horses in his barn. He is steadfast in his care of the animal with a long view of what that animal could accomplish if given the time to flourish. His care for the horses in his barn is matched by his support of the people who he employs to take such good care of them. He is a consummate professional in every aspect of his trade evidenced by his exemplary integrity record and his body of work as is shown by the great horses he has had his hands on. His unheralded service to the industry by his continued support of entities devoted to the welfare of the horse is also exemplary.”

Mr. Mandella will be honored by the Club at its 92nd Testimonial Dinner, which will be held at Keeneland Friday, November 17th, 2023.

Owner and breeder Rosalie Avery Swann passed away Monday. She was preceded in death by her husband John Swann, Jr., with whom she founded Cygnet Farm in 1979. The couple bred French group-placed Seaton Delaval (Seattle Dancer).

Following her husband's death in 1993, Swann continued to breed and race horses with her children. She raced 2022 Tremont S. winner Two of a Kind (Overanalyze) in partnership and co-bred multiple stakes winner Offering Plan (Spring At Last) with her son, Christopher.

Swann was the first principal of the Bluegrass School, a pioneering special education institution. After retiring as a principal, she was a partner in Amato's Restaurant and renovated and owned West Jefferson Place in Lexington.

She owned and operated the Swann's Nest at Cygnet Farm, a popular bed and breakfast near Keeneland, for 20 years.

Swann is survived by her sons John Swann, III (Kelly) and Christopher (Anne Marie), and daughter Julilynn Swann Beeghly (Andrew), as well as seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

There will be a private graveside funeral at Lexington Cemetery, where she will be interred next to her husband, Thursday at 1 p.m.

A celebration of life will be held Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Thoroughbred Club of America where she hoped all of those who knew her would come and share stories and memories.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Old Friends Equine Retirement (www.oldfriendsequine.org).

A leading author, Eclipse Award-winning journalist, and racing historian who has impacted the sport for more than six decades, Edward L. Bowen has been named the Thoroughbred Club of America's 2022 Testimonial Dinner Honor Guest by the organization's Board of Directors. The Club's 91st Testimonial Dinner will be held at Keeneland Mar. 31.

“The Thoroughbred Club of America is delighted to name Edward Bowen as its 2022 Honor Guest”, said Club President Tony Lacy. “Ed is respected worldwide for his integrity, talent, and love of racing, and his wide-ranging contributions to the horse industry cannot be overstated. He has been the steward of such cornerstone institutions as the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and Blood-Horse, an Eclipse Award-winning journalist, prolific author, and guardian of the important history of our great sport. We congratulate Ed and thank him for his lifelong commitment to the betterment of racing.”

The former editor-in-chief of The Blood-Horse magazine, Bowen also authored 22 books on racing. He spent 24 years at the helm of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation as president until retiring in 2018.

Bowen, who recently turned 80, has held multiple jobs in the industry, had his work published in multiple countries, and has won multiple awards in addition to his Eclipse Award. A Kentucky Colonel and a past president of the Thoroughbred Club of America, he is currently a trustee of the National Museum of Racing, for which he has served for some 35 years as chairman of its Hall of Fame Nominating Committee and is also chairman of its Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor Selection Committee. Bowen lives in Versailles, Ky., with his wife, Ruthie, and has three grown children in addition to two granddaughters.

The Thoroughbred Club Testimonial Dinner was inaugurated in 1932 with first recipient Col. E. R. Bradley and it annually recognizes distinguished contributions of leadership as well as success in the Thoroughbred industry. Designation as the 2022 award recipient reflects postponements of the annual event caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Slammed took her New Mexico speed to the bluegrass Saturday, running off with the GII Thoroughbred Club of America S., a “Win and You're In” qualifier for the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint. Having racked up a six-for-eight record last term with romping stakes wins at Ruidoso, Albuquerque and Zia Park, the bay added a Sunland Park stakes victory in February. Leading regional conditioner Todd Fincher brought a string to Del Mar for the summer, and among that group was Slammed, who scored a 5 1/4-length allowance tally July 8 before finishing second at odds-on in the GIII Rancho Bernardo H. Aug. 28.

Zipping right out to the front as expected, the bay doled out splits of :22.75 and :46.02 with Happy Soul breathing down her neck. She shook free of that foe at the head of the lane, and nobody else came running as Slammed ran up the score.

“It was good, just like she did in the morning, very professional,” said winning rider Florent Geroux. “She knows what to do out there. I'm very pleased for the opportunity from Mr. Fincher and the owners and my agent for getting me the mount. I was just the lucky recipient today on her. Very excited about her. She relaxed very nicely [in the middle of the race]. You can tell on television, when their ears start going back and forth, it's usually a good sign that the horse is taking their time and having fun out there. As soon as I chirped to her a little bit at the three-sixteenths [pole], I had plenty of horse left and I just tried to keep her focus all the way to the wire. But that was really a result of strong urging.”

It's been a productive eight days in Kentucky for Fincher, who also sent out Senor Buscador (Mineshaft) a victory in the GIII Ack Ack S. last week at Churchill, which was a “Win and You're In” for the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

“Really, my only concern was getting away from the gate good and clean,” Fincher said of the winner's trip. “Last time she slipped behind and it cost her, so when I saw those turquoise blinkers jump out of the gate I was very happy. I looked up after the first quarter and it went in :22 3/5, I said, 'If she gets beat we have no excuse,' because the fractions weren't too bad–she can go much faster. So, very happy. And you saw what she did down the lane. She had a lot left. She's an awesome horse.”

He added, “I'm more proud of the horse than anything. I'm just the trainer. The horses are the superstars. She's a superstar and we're just trying to stay out of her way.”

Pedigree Notes:

Slammed becomes the first graded stakes winner for her sire, a 'TDN Rising Star' and Godolphin homebred by Bernardini out of MGISW Seventh Street (Street Cry {Ire}) who was second to Runhappy in the 2015 GI Malibu S.

Dam Hennesey Smash never ventured out of the Southwest, but was seven-for-eight lifetime for Fincher and owner/breeder Barbara Coleman. Roll Hennessy Roll, a top New Mexico sire and source of speed and precociousness, was himself represented by his first graded winner as a broodmare sire Saturday.

Hennesey Smash is half to four other New Mexico stakes standouts, and her 3-year-old filly Smash Ticket was third in the 2021 GII Sorrento S. for Fincher and most recently aired in Pimlico's Weather Vane S. for Rob Atras Sept. 24. Her now 2-year-old unraced colt Arro Smash (Arrogate) was a $360,000 KEESEP yearling, and she produced a Star Guitar colt in 2022 before visiting City of Light.

Trainer Cipriano Contreras and Andrew Knapczyk's Inthemidstofbiz will face five other fillies and mares as she goes for a repeat victory in the 41st running of the $250,000 Thoroughbred Club of America (G2) Saturday afternoon at Keeneland.

Run at 6 furlongs on the main track, the Thoroughbred Club of America is a Breeders' Cup Challenge race with the winner earning a fees-paid berth to the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) to be held Nov. 6 at Del Mar.

The Thoroughbred Club of America is scheduled as the seventh race on Saturday's 11-race program with a 4:12 p.m. ET post time. First post Saturday is 1 p.m.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=197 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=198 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Inthemidstofbiz, who has won one of two starts in 2021, comes into Saturday's race off a fourth-place finish in the Satin and Lace (L) at Presque Isle Downs, the same race she used as a prep for her TCA victory last year. Emmanuel Esquivel has the mount and will exit post position three.

Only Excitable Lady in 1982 and 1983 has posted victories in the TCA in consecutive years.

Favoritism figures to be divided among multiple graded stakes winners Bell's the One, Frank's Rockette and Estilo Talentoso. Estilo Talentoso was runner-up in the Madison (G1) here in the spring.

Lothenbach Stables' Bell's the One has won two of five starts in 2021 highlighted by a triumph in the Honorable Miss (G2) at Saratoga in July. Trained by Neil Pessin, Bell's the One finished second in the Open Mind at Churchill Downs in her most recent start.

Regular rider Corey Lanerie has the call Saturday and will exit post position six.

Frank Fletcher Racing Operations' Frank's Rockette is a three-time graded stakes winner whose lone off-the-board finish in her 16-race career came against the males in last fall's Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) at Keeneland.

Trained by Bill Mott, Frank's Rockette enters Saturday's race off a third-place finish in the Seeking the Pearl Stakes at Colonial Downs on Aug. 23. Junior Alvarado has the mount from post position one.

Estilo Talentoso, owned by the partnership of Medallion Racing, Barry Fowler, Parkland Thoroughbreds, Little Red Feather Racing and BlackRidge Stables and trained by Juan Arriagada, also has been off the board only once in her 16-race career. That came in her most recent start against champion Gamine in the Ballerina (G1).

Jose Ortiz, who was aboard for the first time in the Ballerina, has the mount Saturday and will leave post position four.

The field for the Thoroughbred Club of America, with riders and weights from the inside, is:

Frank's Rockette (Alvarado, 120 pounds)

Club Car (Tyler Gaffalione, 120)

Inthemidstofbiz (Esquivel, 120)

Estlio Talentoso (Ortiz, 122)

Miss Mosaic (Colby Hernandez, 120)

Bell's the One (Lanerie, 123).

Lothenbach Stables' Bell's the One earned an 89 Beyer for her triumphant Saratoga debut in Wednesday's Grade 2 Honorable Miss.

Trained by Neil Pessin, the daughter of Majesticperfection added a fourth graded stakes victory to her resume with a wide, last-to-first move under Corey Lanerie and battled to the outside of graded stakes winner Lake Avenue down the stretch to close for the neck-length score.

“She had a little more energy this morning than I expected,” Pessin said. “She was pretty proud of herself this morning. A race always takes something out of them but she's not acting like it took a lot out of her.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid=197 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=198 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Pessin said Bell's the One will ship out of Saratoga on Thursday evening and will target the Grade 2, $250,000 Thoroughbred Club of America on October 9 at Keeneland en route to the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on November 6 at Del Mar. She finished third in last year's Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland.

Pessin said he was thrilled to see Bell's the One in the Saratoga winner's circle.

“I'm more excited for her because she still hasn't got the respect she deserves,” Pessin said. “I feel like she's never got the justice that she's due so maybe that will help get her there.”

Bell's the One previously notched graded stakes scores in the Grade 2 Raven Run in October 2019 at Keeneland, the Grade 3 Winning Colors in May 2020 at Churchill Downs and Grade 1 Derby City Distaff in September at the Louisville oval.

Following the Honorable Miss, Pessin said Bell's the One was the greatest horse to come up under his care in nearly four decades of training. He compared his star pupil to graded stakes placed Eden Prairie, who was a four-time stakes winner at Fair Grounds and also was owned by Lothenbach Stables.

“When they give you 110 percent every time they run, whether they have the ability or not, you got to love them,” Pessin said. “Good horses lay it down every time, Eden did that, and Bell's has done that. They give you more than you ask of them.”

Pessin said Bob Lothenbach, owner of Lothenbach Stables, was excited to see his mare put up such a performance and looks forward to the possibility of another start in the Breeders' Cup.

“He was very excited last night when I talked to him, he's looking forward to the Breeders' Cup,” Pessin said. “He has a place in California so I'm sure he'll be overjoyed to be out there with a good chance to win.”
