Todd Fincher, a standout on the New Mexico circuit, picked the perfect time and place to pick up his first Grade I win. His stable star Senor Buscador (Mineshaft), who was overdue to collect a big win, got the job done in the GI Saudi Cup. With a purse of $20 million, it is the richest Thoroughbred race in the world. Fincher joined this week's TDN Writers' Room podcast presented by Keeneland to discuss his popular horse, the reasons why he likes training in New Mexico, what are the prospects of a stallion career for Senor Buscador and more. Fincher was this week's Green Group Guest of the Week.

The margin was a nose. Did he know he had won and what made the difference this time?

“Just a little less bad luck is all that we really needed for this to happen,” Fincher said. “Because every time he puts himself in a terrible position. The Japanese jockey (Yuga Kawada, the rider Ushba Tesoro) really did a good job. He had me in a bad position for a long time. We didn't have anywhere to go. He had us in a bad spot, and we had to wait down the stretch. When that horse finally cleared us that was when we could move out and make our run. Junior (Alvarado) timed that perfectly. That's why we were so emotional. Because we never thought he was going to win until the last second, and we still didn't know if we won because the finish was so close.”

Senor Buscador will now head to Dubai for the GI Dubai World Cup. Run at a mile-and-a-quarter and around two turns, that race seems like a better fit for Senor Buscador than the one-turn, mile-and-an-eighth Saudi Cup. But Fincher said the real key to victory in Dubai will be whether or not the early pace is fast enough to set up his late run.

“He needs some kind of setup,” Fincher said. “I don't know why he does it, but he takes himself back right out of the gate. If you watch the Pegasus, he out broke National Treasure and then, three jumps later, he's four lengths behind him. So, he does that to himself and he's not going to change that style. And we can't change it. So, you're still going to need a pace because he's not going to get up there mid-pack and hang around. So, he needs an honest pace.”

Fincher has been training since the late nineties and has been the proverbial big fish in the small pond that is New Mexico racing. Does he ever see himself moving on to a tougher circuit?

“You have to have the horses to make a move like that and I just don't have them,” he said. “I have a ton of New Mexico breds. We break usually 30 to 50 horses a year, and 95% of them are New Mexico breds. Last year, we broke two Kentucky breds and one Louisiana bred, and the rest were New Mexico breds. So, it's not like I normally have the right horses to do it. But this year, we actually broke 15 Kentucky breds and a couple of Louisiana breds. So, we might have an opportunity to take a stable somewhere. But you can't go somewhere with two or three horses and set up a stable and think people are going to bring you horses”.

During the stallion spotlight segments of the podcast, the crew sang the praises of the WinStar stallion Improbable, who stands for $15,000, and the Coolmore stallion Tiz the Law, who stands for $20,000. His first crop are now 2-year-olds and will be hitting the track shortly.

They also looked ahead to this weekend's races, which will include major preps for the GI Kentucky Derby in the GII San Felipe S. at Santa Anita and the GII Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream.

Who better to be the Green Group Guest of the Week Than Mr. Green Group himself, Len Green. Green joined the 'TDN Writers' Room' podcast presented by Keeneland to discuss the latest goings-on with his DJ Stable as well as to offer advice on how those in the Thoroughbred industry can best prepare for the upcoming tax season.

The best horse DJ Stable campaigned in recent years was Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief), who won the 2022 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies on her way to being named champion 2-year-old filly. She did not live up to expectations this year, going 0-for-3. But Green said that, as much as racing is a hobby to many, it should also always be considered a business. The Greens bought Wonder Wheel as a yearling at Keeneland September for $275,000 and sold her at this year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale for $3.2 million. It was, Green said, the proper business decision to make.

“If you decide that you want to run this as a business, and I think it's very, very important that people see this as a business, you have to make business decisions,” he said. “And the business decisions are that when a horse is no longer a racing horse, it's time to cut bait. I might have said it's not worth taking a horse out of training after a tough campaign. Instead, wait several months and try to get her back into racing form. Maybe with other horses, it works. Now was the time to sow it as opposed to racing on. So that's the difference between people who are in this thing for a hobby and not as a business. Businesses, you make business decisions.”

Green believes he knows the tax business when it comes to racing inside and out because he has owned so many horses himself and has been active in the sport for decades.

“I know these things having owned 200 horses every year myself,” he said. “I know what the expense is. I know what the ratios are. I know what you're missing. Have you donated any horses? Where is this horse? Where did you buy it? Well, I bought it, but I didn't pay for it yet. It doesn't make any difference when you pay for it. It's when you take a title and when you put it in use, that's when it's deductible. Whether you use me or somebody else, you have to have someone who is knowledgeable. Someone who can look at your expenses and tell you, okay, here's the way to do it.”

The focus turned to Del Mar, where Chad Brown added to his incredible record at the seaside oval, winning two Grade I's, including the GI Matriarch S., where his quartet of starters finished one, two, three and four. Cadman and Finley also gave their take on the latest developments in the scopolamine case from the 2018 GI Santa Anita Derby, that has, at least for now, resulted in the disqualification of Justify (Scat Daddy).

A donation of a horse to a tax-exempt organization can be mutually beneficial. The donor could potentially obtain an income tax deduction, and the organization receives a worthwhile asset. The horse itself also appreciates greener pastures.

This article summarizes the guidelines for horse owners contemplating such a charitable contribution.
Recipient
Be sure that the donee organization qualifies as an eligible charity under the Internal Revenue Code and that your horse will be used by the organization to further its exempt purpose. You can ask to see the “IRS Determination Letter” or look online for the listing of approved charities.

Determining Fair Market Value (FMV)
What is the price your horse could be donated for on the date of your charitable gift? You may want to consider the services of a professional equine appraiser.

FMV will be a function of several variables, including the horse's age, the number of years owned, how the horse has been trained and used, as well as the horse's personality and track record.

The appraisal should include a description of the horse, the dates of the appraisal and donation, the appraiser's name and qualifications, and the appraisal method used.

Potential Income Tax Deduction
Generally, you may deduct the FMV of the horse you are donating, though many caveats apply. The full FMV deduction is available when:

–The horse will be used by the donee charitable organization directly in regard to its stated charitable purpose.

–There is no financial consideration received in return.

–You have used the horse in business activities for the prior 24 months.

Limitations on the Income Tax Charitable Contribution Deduction
If the horse is not used in connection with the charity's purpose, the income tax deduction becomes the lesser of the FMV of the horse or the amount of your cost basis. A horse that you bred yourself or one that is fully depreciated would not give rise to any deduction in such a case.

This same limitation of the lesser of FMV or cost basis also applies to a horse that has been owned for less than 24 months.

Another situation of a reduced deduction arises when a donated horse that has appreciated in value but has been depreciated. In this scenario, the amount of the charitable deduction is reduced by the amount of depreciation that has been taken.

Further, if you donate a horse that has diminished in value, i.e. your cost basis is higher than the FMV, your charitable deduction would be limited to the FMV.

In such a case, you may be better off selling the horse to generate a tax loss, then donating the proceeds to the charity.

How to Report Your Donation on Your Tax Return
When your charitable deduction is more than $500, you will need to include Form 8283 with your tax return. This form asks for how and when you acquired the horse, your basis, the estimated FMV, and the method used to come up with the FMV.

If the charitable deduction to be taken is greater than $5,000, you will need to have your horse appraised at the time of the donation. This attached written appraisal needs to be contemporaneous and signed by the appraiser, along with the appraiser's qualifications and method(s) used to determine the valuation.

The Green Group
Our team here at the Green Group, with our many decades of equine experience, would be glad to walk you through the steps to make sure that you achieve the maximum charitable contribution deduction that you deserve.

Confusion has reigned ever since an appellate court ruled last week that the Horse Racing and Integrity Act (HISA) is unconstitutional. So what does that mean for the state racing commissions and what should they do going forward? The TDN Writers' Room presented by Keeneland called upon Ed Martin, the chairman and CEO of the Association of Racing Commissioners International to help clear up the situation. Martin was this week's Green Group Guest of the Week.

Martin believes that considering the situation HISA should drop the Jan. 1 date and put off taking over drug testing until after the situation has been fully resolved in the courts.

“HISA could fix this themselves by going back to the FTC and saying we're going to put off enforcement of our drug rules,” Martin said. “And they could put it off six months and hopefully we'll get a final court answer by then. But it doesn't look like we're going to get a final determination of their constitutionality any time soon. So this is going to go into a great gray area.”

Martin said he feared that if HISA were to sanction someone after taking over drug testing and enforcement from the state racing commissions that the ruling could be thrown out because the court has said that HISA is unconstitutional.

“We're in a situation where we have a sport where the HISA rules will apply on January 1st and people will get sanctioned for a drug violation or a doping violation under the HISA Rule,” Martin said. “Then if HISA is ultimately declared unconstitutional and invalid, then that violation goes away. It doesn't exist. The penalty goes away. And you've redistributed purses. So this has the potential to be an enormous, chaotic situation.

“There's also been a number of jockeys across the country who have been sanctioned for HISA crap rule violations. Well, if there aren't constitutional, those violations really don't exist. So expect litigation.”

Martin said he is hearing that should HISA go through some tracks will elect not to take part. That would mean they cannot send out their simulcast signal, a price some may be willing to pay.

“There are tracks that, and I'm not at liberty to say who they are, that are considering not simulcasting their signal to come out from under HISA,” Martin said. “And there are states where the tracks in that state, some of them will simulcast and some of them won't. It depends on their economic viability. This was supposed to bring uniformity to the sport. Right now, it's kind of going in the other way. It's off the rails right now. ”

Elsewhere on the podcast, which is also sponsored by Coolmore, Lane's End, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association, XBTV and https://www.threechimneys.com/ West Point Thoroughbreds, Bill Finley, Zoe Cadman and Randy Moss gave their own take on the HISA mess. They also looked at Frankie Dettori's decision to join the Santa Anita riding colony starting on Dec. 26 and hue and cry over overly aggressive riding in New York and the feeling that the NYRA stewards are not doing enough to discipline jockeys who go over the line.

Editor's note: Back by popular demand: our column where readers ask The Green Group's Len Green for advice on saving taxes on their equine-related activities.

What changes in the tax law can I take advantage of this year to maximize my tax savings?

–Kerry L., Lexington, KY

2021 has been another exciting year when it comes to providing new laws that can save you taxes.

1. First-year expensing for qualified property placed in use is allowed up to $1,050,000. This would include the purchase of horses and more fixed assets used in your trade or business.

2. Qualified Business Income Deduction

If you are a sole business owner, or have an interest in a Partnership, Limited Liability Company (LLC) or a Sub S Corporation, you may be eligible for a tax deduction of up to 20% of your Qualified Business Income.

It is important to note that, if you are eligible, this is considered a personal deduction and can be used even if you take the standard business deduction.

3. There are also positive changes in:

A. Child tax credit
B. Dependent care credit and exclusion
C. Earned income tax credit
D. Charitable contributions

I own stallion shares. One of the stallions I own was sold abroad this year. Can I replace that with a new season to avoid paying taxes on it anytime during the year?

–John S., New York, NY

Great question.
Prior to this year, there was a section of the tax code (Section 1031) which allowed for the tax-free exchange of like kind assets.
If you meet the rules, it was possible to defer the gain, if there was one.
Under the new rules, Section 1031 only pertains to real estate property.
But can you accomplish your objective in another way.
If you sell the stallion shares, and the sale is for an amount greater than what you paid for the shares, you will have a gain.
If you buy a new share or any personal property (a horse or farm equipment) and it is eligible for a one year write off (Section 179) or for a first-year expense write off, you could possibly offset the above gain with the tax deduction from using either of these methods.

I bought a yearling in September and plan on selling him at the March 2YO Sales. Is that the same season? Or two different years?
–Gregory L., Montclair, NJ

I am assuming like most taxpayers, you are on a calendar year for filing taxes.
So, the buying of the yearling will be recorded in one year and the sale in another year.
If this is your normal business, we can call you a “pinhooker.”
You would record the purchase as inventory in the year bought and the cost of the yearling would offset the selling price the following year when the animal is sold.
If you were not a “pinhooker” but had bought the yearling to race but decided to sell in the next year, there may be different alternatives to the way you handle the transaction.

What is bonus depreciation and how does it affect my boarding business this year?
–Vicky F., Paris, KY

Bonus depreciation is defined as the additional first year depreciation (Section 168(k)) of the Internal Revenue Code.
It can be claimed in addition to any first-year expensing described earlier in the article.
Bonus depreciation can be claimed for eligible property whether it is new or used.
Something new: It also includes “qualified improvement property.”
Items which are included in this special section are:
Any improvements to the internal part of a building of an existing building that was made after the building was placed into service.
Example of qualified assets: fences, watersheds, additional stalls, and barns

I am planning on starting a small thoroughbred business. Can you explain the difference between S Corp and LLCs as they regard to taxes?
Tom C., Louisville, KY

There are many advantages of operating your trade or business as a Limited Liability Company or a Sub S Corporation.
The protection against possible lawsuits in itself is a great reason for doing it. There are also certain tax advantages.
To maximize the tax advantages, you should form an LLC with a least two partners.
By taking the step to form either of these entities, you will be demonstrating you are taking steps to run your operation in a businesslike manner.
You will not be comingling your personal expenses with your business expenses.
LLCs offer more flexibility and many other advantages compared to S Corps. The one advantage of an S Corp vis-a-vis an LLC would be the avoidance of self-employment tax.
Is it too late now to make any changes that will help me to save money on my 2021 taxes?
–Susan M., Chicago, IL

The answer is generally no if you are reporting your income and deductions on the cash method.
But here are a few:

Check to see if you are eligible to take a deduction for a pension plan for 2021.

The rules are complicated and you must check to make sure you are not covered under another company plan.
But assume you are eligible, certain pension plans (SEP IRAs, IRAs) allow a tax deductions to be claimed for 2021 as long as the pension payment is made before Apr. 15, 2022 (or extended due date for a SEP).

If you bought certain business equipment and placed it in service, even if you did not pay for all of it before 12/31/21, you may be able to deduct the cost of the equipment in 2021.

If you paid state estimated tax payments on 1/15/22 and your total tax expense did not exceed $10,000 some portion of the 1/15/22 payment may be tax deductible.

It's not too late to send in your own question before tax season and get an answer from Len Green. Email suefinley@thetdn.com

It was an eventful few days for racing in the northeast, and the TDN Writers' Room presented by JPMorgan Private Bank broke down all of the latest developments in the Monmouth jockey standoff and the raids on Parx barns by the Pennsylvania Racing Commission Wednesday morning. Plus, they welcomed Four Corners Racing's managing partner Anthony Trimarchi as the Green Group Guest of the Week to discuss his experiences as a new owner in the game and the economics of racing from a banking perspective.

“I was exposed to racing at a real young age because I grew up in Albany, just south of Saratoga,” Trimarchi said of his history in the game. “Every year of my life, I would spend a day at the races with my extended family in the backyard at Saratoga and hanging out at the picnic area at the top of the stretch. I loved going to the track as a kid for the same reasons I love it today. It's an amazing, outdoor sport with beautiful horses, excitement, competition, crowds, numbers, colors. As I got older, I kept going, introducing a bunch of college friends to Saratoga. I had my bachelor party at the Travers in 2010. Fast forward to today, I've been involved on the ownership side for about five years and it's all come full circle for me because I've taken my kids to the track. I've got three elementary school-age children who have all been in the paddock at Belmont, Saratoga and Aqueduct. They've been in the winner's circle at Oaklawn Park. I just hope that they'll have the same fond memories that I have from when I was a kid, and I can't wait to make new memories with them over the next 10, 20, 30 years.”

Also a managing director at JPMorgan Private Bank, Trimarchi was asked from an economic standpoint why he thinks racing has struggled to find new owners despite skyrocketing purses over the last decade-plus.

“I think it's just all about exposure and awareness,” he said. “The purses are attractive if you structure your business the right way and have the right partners. And the shot of adrenaline that you get leading up to a race or when you win a race, I wish I could put that in a bottle because I'll be chasing that the rest of my life. The first time I was in the winner's circle, I decided I was going to own a horse. I saw the sport [initially] through clients who were major owners who had dozens of horses running all over the place. I didn't understand what entry [into the game] would look like. I thought it was the kind of thing you needed to be a billionaire to do. It's not. It requires some disposable income obviously, but you can do it responsibly and get exposure. I'm a great example of that. I started out doing small syndicate stuff, I saw the sport, I saw the risk, I understood it, and I decided I wanted to do more.”

Elsewhere in the show, which is also sponsored by Keeneland, West Point Thoroughbreds, the Minnesota Racehorse Engagement Project and Legacy Bloodstock, the writers questioned whether or not there would be any long-term consequences for Bob Baffert from the embarrassment of the Derby and looked forward to Memorial Day Weekend stakes action. Click here to watch the podcast; click here for the audio-only version.

We departed New Jersey today-destination Louisville. The flight took almost two hours and thankfully was without incident.

But, in reality, the journey to this time and place began almost 40 years ago when my dad tore his Achilles while playing tennis. Back then, the best way to treat a ruptured tendon was to be placed in a cast from your ankle to your upper hip and keep your body as immobile as possible. Well, anyone who knows my dad understands that this directive was going to be short-lived. As someone once said to me decades ago, “Your father's mind is as active as a long-tailed cat at a rocking chair convention.”

So, after a few days of restlessness, my mother instructed me (at the age of nine) to take my dad out of the house. Anywhere out of the house was fine as far as she was concerned. So, I pushed my father in his wheelchair around the block a few times until a neighbor mercifully stopped us to talk about the weather, sports, the new house being built at the end of the street, etc. When those topics were exhausted, our neighbor asked if we wanted to join him at Monmouth Park – he had a $5,000 claimer who was the favorite.

The short story is that the horse won, we got our pictures taken in the winner's circle, cashed a few tickets and killed a hot summer day. On our ride home, I could see the wheels of my father's brain spinning. For the remainder of the summer, he pored over the IRS tax code seeking feverishly for horse-related depreciation schedules, hobby-loss rules, and passive vs. active definitions–yes, it's as exciting as it sounds.

That summer begat the beginning of two successful businesses-D.J. Stable and the Green Group. The former is our family-owned racing and breeding operation. The latter is my father's tax and accounting firm which specializes in the horse industry.

Technically the two businesses are mutually exclusive. But there is so much cross-over due to both groups being actively involved in our boutique industry. There are countless times when we attend sales seeking our next potential Grade I contender and end up consulting with a Green Group client about their taxes or reviewing a business opportunity. The bottom line is that we basically eat, drink, and sleep the horse business. We have found that it is the ultimate challenge trying to (as we call it) sweep the ocean back with a broom.

So now I sit here in a hotel room in Louisville, Kentucky on the last Thursday in April (not the same sexy ring as the first Saturday in May) and reflect on all the twists and turns through which our Thoroughbred career has taken us. What if my dad had not torn his Achilles tendon? What if our neighbor's claimer failed to hit the board? What if my father's interest that summer had turned to baseball instead of horse racing? What if we had not met Aron Yagoda, Mark Casse, Bo Hunt, Dr. Pugh and Susie Hart, Jeff Hayslett, the Taylor brothers from Taylor Made Sales, Bill Betz, Kim Valerio, and countless other people who have had such a positive impact on our success? What if last year's two-year-old sales were not delayed and someone else bought Helium? And finally, what if we ran out of luck, money and/or patience before we bought or bred Graded winners like Do It With Style, November Snow, Songandaprayer, Jaywalk, etc.?

The above life moments all lined up this way for a reason. So far it launched two successful businesses, provided my family with a remarkable shared interest, and presented countless opportunities for excitement (and heartbreak). Hopefully there will be more flights to Breeders' Cups, Oaks, Derbies and other Graded Stakes that I can share with my family. But for right now, I'm going to enjoy this one.

OCALA, FL–There's been a palpable good feeling all week at OBS for the auction house's marquee Spring 2-Year-Old Sale, and you need look no further than the full parking lot to explain why. Business is booming, but perhaps equally responsible for the positive vibes is the easing of coronavirus restrictions as the country rapidly becomes vaccinated, which means old friends seeing and hugging each other for the first time in a long time. Wednesday morning, Joe Bianca and Jon Green talked about that and much more with four consignors and buyers in the first on-scene episode of TDN Writers' Room presented by Keeneland.

Joining the set, posted up at the tiki bar near the walking ring, were Green Group Guests of the Week Barry “Doc” Eisaman, Randy Miles, Nick de Meric and Terry Finley, all of whom exuded the optimism felt from economic and personal standpoints on the grounds compared to last year's delayed, angst-filled sale.

“The weight is just lifted off our back,” said Miles, whose six-horse consignment includes Hip 1099, an Into Mischief filly expected to bring a large return on the sale's final day after breezing a furlong in :9 4/5. “We had no idea what was going to happen last year. We were trying to sell horses privately because we didn't know what the market was going to be like. And a big part of this business is not about the money, it's about all of our friends. It's just so nice to be out here for this two-week period and all of our friends are here. It's like a big party. Everybody is in a great mood, and it's just refreshing. If we can get the racetracks back to this, it'll be so much fun. The financial stuff always takes care of itself. But the people are what makes it fun.”

Nick de Meric's de Meric Sales has come to OBS typically loaded with promising juveniles, which bore out later Wednesday in the ring when a Quality Road colt (hip 381, :10 flat breeze) from his shedrow hammered to Speedway Stable for a thus-far sale-topping $1.5 million.

“As we all know, if this business teaches you nothing else it teaches you to be humble, but we do have a couple of potential stars,” de Meric said. “We have a fabulous Quality Road, we have a couple of Into Mischiefs that we think an awful lot of. Curlin, Candy Ride, we've got some names represented in the consignment and the horses performed well and vetted well after their performance, and people seem to be lining up well in a few spots.”

de Meric also commented on the good feeling around the grounds, saying, “I think the atmosphere is diametrically opposed to last year. People have been on lockdown so long and had restricted travel so long, they're just ready to come out and play. And what better place to play than a 2-year-old sale? There is definitely a feeling of optimism in the air.”

The proximity to next Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby, also back on its normal calendar spot this year, also helped that optimism. West Point Thoroughbreds' CEO Finley bought a pair of babies Tuesday and spoke about the motivation of the impending Derby to find the next star.

“You look at the top 25 horses that are in contention for the Derby and they don't all come from day one in September, they don't all cost $600,000,” he said. “They come from all over the spectrum. So I think that's what keeps everybody [motivated]. The fact that you can come here and get a great athlete to take a shot with to try to get to the big races.”

Eisaman was this week's Minnesota Racehorse Engagement Project Story of the Week after he and wife Shari's Eisaman Equine sold a homebred colt by Gun Runner (Hip 118, :10 flat breeze) for an easily session-topping $850,000 to Michael Lund Petersen in Tuesday's sale opener.

“My wife is the brains behind the management of our mares and it's extremely rewarding for her,” he said. “She picked Gun Runner, she helped select that mare, so to have one we raised from a little puppy to yesterday was very good. Every year when we leave the farm and go into the sale, there are young horses who are doing everything quite well and he was one of them. But you can never really predict at that point that he'd catch on with the right buyers and be that successful. After he got here, trained here, the breeze show happened and he galloped out so well, showed so much poise, you begin to evolve into understanding this, but our expectations were never in the range that he brought [Tuesday]. So it was a good day for us, our family, my wife and our broodmares.”

Elsewhere on the show, Bianca and Green reacted to the outstanding battle in the GI Apple Blossom H., talked about the reversal of disqualifications for Bob Baffert trainees Charlatan (Speightstown) and Gamine (Into Mischief) and, in the West Point Thoroughbreds news segment, broke down the implications of New Jersey's strict new whip rules. Click here to watch the podcast; click here for the audio-only version.

One of the few major races left to win for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen is the most significant prize in racing, so a win in this year's GI Kentucky Derby would satisfy an ultimate career goal. But if he were to do it with Saturday's GI Arkansas Derby victor Super Stock (Dialed In), a horse with the Asmussen family's fingerprints all over him, it would represent the sentimental success of a lifetime. Wednesday, Asmussen joined the TDN Writers' Room presented by Keeneland to discuss Super Stock, the permanent chip on his shoulder, who he would pick between some of his legendary trainees head to head and more.

Calling in via Zoom as the Green Group Guest of the Week, Asmussen talked about his emotional connection to Super Stock, who is co-owned by his father and was ridden to victory by his oldest son for his first stakes win last summer.

“We've been very fortunate in racing, had many successes, but a circumstance in which you can leg your son up on a stakes winner for your parents is quite unique, to say the least, and is a very special experience,” he said. “I have so many emotions about it. You imagine having that kind of success going into a race, but I did not realize what it actually meant, and the outpouring of love, respect and support since the [Arkansas Derby] for my parents and who they are has been the best part for me. This is my mom and dad's story. They supported us unwaveringly and put me and Cash in the positions we've been in to have success in this business. They're both 79 years old and unique circumstances allowed them to keep this horse. Dad has had Grade I winners in the past, he's just sold them all. That probably would have happened with this horse as well if not for the pandemic. It's brought mom and dad to the forefront and gotten them the respect and admiration that I know they deserve.”

Asked how it would change his life to win a Derby after coming up empty with his first 21 starters, Asmussen said, “I don't know yet, but I'd hate to lose this chip on my shoulder, lose the edge. The next horse that you run is the most important horse. Our motto around here is, 'Everything matters or nothing matters.' So don't lose that chip. We've got to keep it in front of us. We get tremendous opportunities and we respect them and want to make the most of them. Whenever Super Stock won, it was meant to be, so that's what we're looking for going into the Derby. It'll happen, if it's meant to be.”

Elsewhere on the show, the writers reacted to the weekend's big races and handicapped all five participants' chances to win the Writers' Room Derby Chase fantasy 3-year-old contest. In the West Point Thoroughbreds news segment, they lamented yet another slap-on-the-wrist fine for a trainer with a drug positive and lauded Indiana Grand's decision to broadcast video explanations for all of its steward decisions. And, in welcoming new sponsor the Minnesota Racehorse Engagement Project, they talked about TDN's most-read story of the week, which featured trainer Joe Orseno railing against the Lasix ban in stakes races. Click here to watch the podcast; click here for the audio-only version.
