It is 16 years since The Aga Khan enjoyed the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches-G1 Prix de Diane double with Zarkava (Ire) (Zamindar) and there was a genuine sense at ParisLongchamp on Sunday that he has a live prospect for a repeat. While the afternoon's G3 Prix de la Grotte winner Candala (Fr) (Frankel {GB}–Candarliya {Fr}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) can not yet be placed in the same bracket as that former luminary, the manner of her re-entry suggests that she is going to be one of the season's leading lights among her sex. Anchored with only the slow-starting G1 Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Rose Bloom (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) behind early by Mickael Barzalona, the 29-10 favourite who was last seen winning a Chantilly conditions event in September by four lengths delivered a telling surge in the straight to overhaul the 13-1 shot Minoushka (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) close home for a short-neck success, with the G3 Prix des Reservoirs winner Tulipa Chope (Fr) (Born To Sea {Ire}) a length away in third.

“I was impatient to see her back at the races, but equally I was not in too much of a hurry as the ground has been very bad so far and also it took her some time to come in her coat and blossom,” explained trainer Francis-Henri Graffard, who had earlier saddled the owner-breeder's Calandagan (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) to success in the G3 Prix Noailles. “So a nice day like today with drier ground was ideal for a seasonal debut and it was the plan to use waiting tactics, as I know she can quicken. She had run well here first time out last year, won well on her second start and had always showed us good things. I'd imagine the Poule d'Essai will be next. She has every right to be at the start and it will be a test, but we also think that she'll stay further.”

According to France Galop, the winner's finishing splits were 11.94, 10.98 and 11.41 confirming that she has the acceleration to win the course-and-distance mile Classic in four weeks' time, which is notable considering her stamina-packed pedigree that points to her being much more of a Diane or Oaks filly. The early animator Cetera (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}), who was in front of Candala when they were second and third behind the unbeaten TDN Rising Star Bauhinia (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) on their debuts over this track and trip in August and who had been subsequently beaten four lengths by the Aga Khan homebred at Chantilly, set only moderate fractions. She was much slower than the Fontainebleau winner Ramadan (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) throughout, making it all the more meritorious that Candala was able to shut down that gap and hit the line hard.

Pedigree Notes
Candala, who becomes the 95th group winner for her illustrious sire, is the fourth foal out of the smart Candarliya whose expoits included successes in the Prix de Royallieu when it held group 2 status, the G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil and the G3 Prix Minerve as well as a runner-up placing in the G1 Prix Vermeille. Tried as a stayer later in her career, she had the stamina to be placed in the G2 Prix Kergorlay twice and the G3 Prix de Barbeville and has produced the listed-placed Carini (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) who stayed a mile and a half despite being by his fast sire.

Candarliya is a full-sister to the listed scorer Canndera (Fr) and a half to the Laurel Turf Cup, Cape Henlopen S. and Listed Prix la Moskowa winner Canessar (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) who was also runner-up in the GII Belmont Gold Cup Invitational. The third dam Caribbeandriftwood (Woodman) is connected to the G2 Sandown Mile S. winner and G1 Prix d'Ispahan runner-up Wixim (Diesis {GB}).

There were few surprise outcomes on Leopardstown's Irish Champions card on Saturday, merely simple rubber-stamping of the positions of the season's category leaders. Step forward The Aga Khan's G1 Irish 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. heroine Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}–Tarana {Ire}, by Cape Cross {Ire}) in the G1 Coolmore America “Justify” Matron S., which has a history of upsets but which this time kept to script. If Dermot Weld, who had earlier opted to withdraw Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), had concerns about the winner's readiness beforehand one look at the body language of Chris Hayes would have steadied the nerves.

Content to follow the leaders throughout the early stages in this berth for the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, the half-sister to the luminary Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) cruised to the fore soon into the straight and once committed took command a furlong out. Soon beyond reach, the 5-6 favourite had 1 1/4 lengths to spare over Rogue Millennium (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) at the line, with half a length back to Just Beautiful (GB) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}) in third.

“No matter how many Group 1s you're fortunate in life to win, that will always go down as a special one for us–all the pressure was on this filly and she keeps winning,” Weld said of the second of three successful TDN Rising Stars on the card. “Leopardstown has been very lucky for me and the way to ride it, like most tracks, is to just keep it simple and ride her with confidence. She's a very talented filly. She was eight to 10 kilos heavier today than when she won at Royal Ascot and I was just very happy when I saw Chris cruising there on the outside. Obviously the Breeders' Cup has to be a possibility and a decision will be made on whether she's kept in training for next year.”

Pedigree Notes

Tahiyra is the third foal out of the Listed Oyster S. and Listed Martin Malony S. winner and G3 Curragh Cup-placed Tarana (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), whose first was the aforementioned GI Breeders' Cup Turf, G1 Prix Vermeille and G1 Prix de l'Opera heroine Tarnawa who was also second in this card's feature and the Arc. The second dam Tarakala (Ire) (Dr Fong), who captured the Listed Galtres S. and was third in the G3 Noblesse S., is connected to the G1 Prix Royal-Oak hero and G1 Prix du Cadran runner-up Tiraaz (Lear Fan) and the G1 Phoenix S. heroine Damson (Ire) (Entrepreneur {GB}). Tarana's 2-year-old colt by Frankel (GB) is named Tarafi (Ire), while she also has a yearling filly by Lope De Vega (Ire).

Coming through in a highly tactical renewal of the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot on Friday, The Aga Khan's TDN Rising Star Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}–Tarana {Ire}, by Cape Cross {Ire}) showed her class to widen her portfolio which already included an Irish 1000 Guineas and Moyglare Stud S. Sent off the 8-13 favourite to bridge a 45-year gap for Dermot Weld in this prestige event, the half-sister to Rosewell House's recent superstar Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) was instantly faced with adversity and a conundrum for Chris Hayes as she missed the break a fraction and ended up in rear off the steady pace.

With Ryan Moore content to saunter in front on Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never), Hayes opted to sit chilly at the back to save his mount's acceleration as he had with the same target to aim at in the Moyglare in very different conditions back in September. Unleashing a 11.59 penultimate split down the outer as she and Sounds Of Heaven (GB) (Kingman {GB}) made a sandwich of Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}) approaching the furlong pole, Tahiyra had forged ahead by the time the latter was in full flight. Despite Remarquee's eye-catching flourish, a length separated them at the line with a head back to Sounds Of Heaven in third.

There was an inquiry, but the result remained unaltered and Siyouni had his notable St James's Palace-Coronation double. “I can't wait to ride this filly in a truly-run mile race and see what she is really capable of,” Hayes said in the immediate aftermath. “She slipped coming out of the gates, it was Plan B and it was a slow pace so she did well considering she was running at a quickening pace. I knew this filly could over-race and that I could be there too soon, so it wasn't going to be straightforward and I just had to ride her like she was the best filly and the fastest in the field.”

Tahiyra is all class as she wins the Coronation Stakes for @chrishayes24 and Dermot Weld at #RoyalAscot! @Ascot pic.twitter.com/AW6nFP0Zw6

For Weld, who saddled Sutton Place to win this in an entirely different era as a young man at the end of his twenties in 1978, this 18th Royal success was proof of the unending expertise of the septuagenarian. “I have been very fortunate in life,” he said. “She has brilliant speed and I suppose she's learning more about racing and getting more professional. I thought she won fair and square. Her sister was a brilliant racemare and this one is equally good. They are different sorts, this one has more pace. I enjoy so much training these fillies, I know the families and do my best to train them.”

Weld is set on giving Tahiyra a break now, after three tough encounters since the start of last month and having openly expressed that Newmarket's 1000 Guineas was coming a touch too soon. “I think the plan always was to give her a nice holiday, a nice break,” he added. “She's had a very busy spring and early summer and we will look at a programme for her in the autumn.”

While Remarquee lost some momentum when checked at the furlong pole, her trainer Ralph Beckett was not feeling unlucky. “She has run her legs off today,” he said. “By the time she did get rolling, the gap was closing–you don't see many of ours with a sheepskin noseband and she wears it because she is still green and has not had that much racing. I am not disappointed with her in the slightest. The Guineas was a non-event–she had only had two starts and is a slow learner! She will go for the Falmouth next, I think that will suit.”

Sounds Of Heaven's jockey Ronan Whelan said, “It was a great run. On paper it looked straightforward from my point of view and thankfully the race went like that. My filly has run a belter and I think there is more to come from her. She is not the finished article yet. She will be better as the year goes on.”

Pedigree Notes
Tahiyra's dam is the Listed Oyster S. and Listed Martin Malony S. winner and G3 Curragh Cup-placed Tarana, whose first foal was the aforementioned triple top-level scorer and Breeders' Cup Turf heroine Tarnawa. The second dam Tarakala (Ire) (Dr Fong) captured the Listed Galtres S. and was third in the G3 Noblesse S. and is related to the G1 Prix Royal-Oak hero and G1 Prix du Cadran runner-up Tiraaz (Lear Fan), the G1 Phoenix S. heroine Damson (Ire) (Entrepreneur {GB}) who took the G2 Queen Mary S. at this meeting in 2004 and that year's G3 Norfolk S. winner Blue Dakota (Ire) (Namid {GB}). Also connected to the G1 Prix Morny-winning sire Arcano (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and the G1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp heroine Gilt Edge Girl (GB) (Monsieur Bond {Ire}), Tarana has an exciting prospect in the 2-year-old colt Tarafi (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and a yearling filly by Lope De Vega (Ire).

Making amends for a narrow eclipse at Newmarket, The Aga Khan's Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) returned to re-establish her dominance at The Curragh on Sunday, providing Dermot Weld with a sixth G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas and completing a weekend Classic double for her sire in the process.

So impressive when taking the G1 Moyglare S. here in September, the TDN Rising Star was quicker away here than in the 1000 Guineas and able to draft in behind Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) and that runner's stablemate and pacemaker Dower House (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Delivered by Chris Hayes to tackle Meditate approaching the furlong pole, the 2-5 favourite asserted to confirm the Moyglare form by 1 1/2 lengths, with Jim Bolger's 150-1 shot Comhra (Ire) (Vocalised) a strong-closing head away in third.

Weld said, “She was in a pocket, but when you have a very good horse they have the pace to get out of that pocket. I was always comfortable.

“The plan was to hold on to her and ride her for speed. My only concern was whether she would let herself down on the quick ground. They have done a good job here.

“We'll see how she comes out of this race and obviously we will think about the Coronation S.”

The Aga Khan's daughter, Princess Zara, was in attendance to witness Tahiyra secure a commanding success. Her brown and green silks were also carried by the fourth, Tarawa (Ire) (Shamardal), who supplied Weld with a one-four in the race.

Princess Zara said, “She was very brave and she kept at it and won beautifully. Looking at what she did today, and Paddington yesterday, I think we have a good set of Guineas there. To have a homebred like this is lovely to see.”

Pat Downes, manager of the Aga Khan's Gilltown Stud, echoed the sentiments of Princess Zara and lauded the Haras de Bonneval-based Siyouni.

He said, “These are the kind of results that a stallion needs to achieve to be put in the elite bracket worldwide. They are two very big wins for the horse this weekend and he's just a very good stallion, we knew that already, but they have to keep on producing these big results to maintain their elite bracket status. Thankfully, this has been a great weekend for Siyouni.”

It was an emotional afternoon for Dermot Weld on Sunday as the legendary veteran of the Irish training ranks basked in the glory of winning The Curragh's G1 Moyglare Stud S. for the first time since 1987 with the brilliant TDN Rising Star Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}). So closely linked with the sponsors for so long, the master of Rosewell House was winning their signature race with an Aga Khan homebred who had looked so special on her winning debut at Galway July 26. Always travelling supremely well behind the leaders under Chris Hayes, the 100-30 second favourite was unleashed to pick up Ballydoyle's G2 Debutante S. and G3 Albany S. scorer Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) inside the final furlong and draw away for an emphatic 2 1/4-length success from that even-money market-leader. There was a yawning 4 1/2-length gap back to the sponsors' Eternal Silence (War Front) in third to underline the sheer quality of the performance.

Delivered by fate to coincide with the centennial year of The Aga Khan's Studs, the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) descended on Sandown on Saturday to mark the occasion by providing his owner-breeder with a landmark first G1 Coral-Eclipse S. success. In the kind of tight finale that could comfortably have been predicted given the highly-competitive nature of this year's renewal, the Prix du Jockey Club hero held a fast-diminishing neck margin over the arguably unlucky Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), with the race's other 3-year-old Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) a further head away in third and Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) only half a length behind in a four-way go. “It is always a real challenge coming to England and not easy for us, so this is a good day,” Rouget commented.

While Christophe Soumillon can be commended for his in-race tactics more than for his immediate celebrations which almost led to Lord North being brought down, this much-vaunted Eclipse was run as a typically “French” affair with steady fractions and a two-furlong sprint. Vadeni, who drifted markedly to 11-4 second favouritism as all the money flooded in for the ultimately disappointing 9-4 market-leader Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}), was anchored last of the six early with Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) sent on and Bay Bridge in close attendance. Whether by accident or design, Tom Marquand was not making it a true test on the Haggas runner which played against the slow-starting Mishriff and by the time Vadeni was being primed by Soumillon three out the screw was really being turned.

Strangely, a furlong later Bay Bridge who had been so impressive over this course and distance in the Brigadier Gerard was sending out all the wrong signals and his demise meant that Mishriff was caught between him and Native Trail while Vadeni was enjoying a clear passage being slung-shot down the outer to take command approaching the furlong pole. Having been level with the French raider two out, the Gosdens' international star found himself two lengths adrift with a furlong to run and despite his surge cutting back most of the deficit it was not enough.

Vadeni, who made his debut at La Teste de Buch last July, is also the winner of the Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage and G3 Prix de Guiche with tactics probably at play in his defeats in the G3 Prix de Conde and G3 Prix de Fontainebleau. Clearly now a colt come of age, Rouget explained that he had forced their hand to launch this audacious raid. “The horse was very well after the Jockey Club and it was too long to wait until the Irish Champion, he has the action of a good-ground horse and we had confidence in him,” he said. “It was maybe less of a fast pace than usual and everyone had their chance at the top of the straight. We decided to have him behind and not put the horse into the fight too early to preserve his acceleration. It will be the Irish Champion next and then either Ascot [for the Champion S.] or the Arc. We don't know, but for me he is a typical mile and a quarter horse.”

Soumillon, who was later handed a 12-day ban July 16-27 with his celebrations causing Vadeni to lurch towards the rail past the line and create a concertina which almost led to Lord North being brought down, was content that the run of the race put the winner firmly in his comfort zone. “The pace was just fine–for my horse everything was perfect,” he said. “He was really relaxed. He changed legs perfectly everywhere I wanted and when I came out of the turn, the pace picked up and for like 50 or 100 yards he was a bit off the bridle, so I had to give him a chance.”

“When he just went up that small uphill at the two-furlong maker, he just took me on the bridle and changed legs,” he added. “That was at the point where I was thinking 'should I wait a bit more?' but I saw Mishriff on my inside had been completely stopped and I just let him go. That is why I came maybe 50 or 100 yards too early to hit the front and unfortunately maybe 100 yards from the line, he stumbled and lost balance for a few strides so I was asking 'please don't give up, keep going' but he gives you a gear like champions can. When I passed the line I didn't see William and James on my inside and my horse just shifted to take the corner. Unfortunately they had to check both their horses quite badly and like I said to the stewards that is my fault. I shouldn't have first celebrated like that and I should have looked to my inside to make sure I hadn't put them in trouble at that point.”

Thady Gosden said of the G1 Juddmonte International, G1 Saudi Cup and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic winner, whose run through the race is certain to be the subject of much discussion for some time, “Mishriff has run a great race. He just missed the break and the plan was to follow Bay Bridge, which meant we wound up on the inside. David has done everything right and I am thrilled with the horse. Three-year-olds get a lot of weight at this time of year and so to split two of the star three-year-olds of this season is a great performance. I think we will now be looking at going back to York with him for the Juddmonte International and we could also look at the King George for him. Lord North also ran a good race. He just got squeezed up a bit, but has still run well.”

Charlie Appleby was delighted with Native Trail and said, “William said he had no excuses. He felt he was in the right position and the horse was comfortable throughout the race and over the trip. He said he saw it out, but take nothing away from the winner and the eventual second. That was a strong event and it was always going to be a tight finish. I don't think you were ever going to see a horse win by a couple of lengths. I posed the question 'do we come back to a mile?' but he said he is comfortable at that and I see no reason why we don't stay at a mile and a quarter. That might give him a few more options. Maybe on a slicker track where they go a better gallop it might just suit him.”

Vadeni is the third black-type performer for Vaderana (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}) alongside the Australian stakes-placed Vadiyann (Fr) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) and the four-times listed-placed Vadsena (Fr) (Makfi {GB}). The second dam is the G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Vadawina (Ire) (Unfuwain), whose progeny include the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris winner Vadamar (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}), his Listed Prix Isonomy-winning full-sister Vedouma (Fr) and the G3 Tyros S. winner and G1 Racing Post Trophy-placed The Pentagon (Ire) by Churchill's sire Galileo (Ire).

Vadawina is kin to the fellow Saint-Alary winner Vazira (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and the stakes-producing, dual group 3 winner Vadapolina (Fr) (Trempolino) who is also the second dam of the G2 Prix Chaudenay and G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil scorer and G1 Prix Royal-Oak runner-up Valia (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and the G3 Prix Bertrand de Tarragon scorer Waliyak (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}).

It is rare that The Aga Khan's silks are at the forefront this early in the major two-year-old contests, but when they are it is always a good sign and Shartash (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}–Shamreen {Ire}, by Dubawi {Ire}) showed he had the precocity to go with his illustrious pedigree in Saturday's G2 GAIN Railway S. at The Curragh. Kept fresh by Johnny Murtagh following his Naas conditions win May 7, the son of the dual G2 Blandford S. winner was held up early as the Listed First Flier S. and G3 Marble Hill S. winner Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never) set off in front. Needing the gaps late on, the 9-1 shot was produced in time by Ben Coen to oust the rallying 5-6 favourite by a short head, with 1 1/4 lengths back to Apache Outlaw (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) in third. “This is where these colours should be on Irish Derby weekend and it's my job to get them there,” Murtagh said. “He's a Guineas type of horse to me, he's got that pace.”

Shartash motors home in the @GAINEquine Railway Stakes!

The Invincible Spirit colt strikes for Group 2 glory in a big success for @JohnnyMurtagh, @BenCoen2 and the Aga Khan on Derby day at @curraghrace pic.twitter.com/00CcFNlYPb

— Racing TV (@RacingTV) June 25, 2022

The last juvenile that the owner-breeder enjoyed such early-season success with was the great Siyouni (Fr), so Shartash's every move from here on warrants the closest examination. Third on debut behind the subsequent Marble Hill runner-up Tough Talk (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and the Windsor Castle-winning TDN Rising Star Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never) over this course and distance Apr. 10, the bay managed to edge out Age of Kings (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) at Naas before being held back from the demands of Royal Ascot. Rewarding that patience, he was able to subdue the more-experienced Blackbeard who was demonstrating his unquenchable appetite for the game by coming back at the line.

“He's improved and got a bit more streetwise–he was always sharp, but now he's relaxing and he showed a very good turn of foot today when he needed it,” Murtagh added. “Ben had to be brave there, but I have great confidence in him and a good horse is usually able to get you out of trouble. He's always had plenty of speed and when I entered him up in April, Pat Downes said 'are you sure?' but I knew that this is a real two-year-old. He's tough and hardy and the Phoenix is the next logical step. Maybe it will be the National Stakes later on–he has to get seven and that is not a guarantee at the moment, but he's starting to do it right now.”

There is no obvious reason why Shartash should not get at least seven furlongs on pedigree, with Shamreen at her best over a mile and a quarter as she showed when garnering her brace of Blandfords and also the G3 Royal Whip S. here. The second dam Shahreen (Ire) (Bahri) captured the G3 Denny Cordell Lavarack & Lanwades Stud Fillies' S. and also produced the GIII Singspiel S. winner Shahroze (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), while she is kin to the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. scorer Sharestan (Ire) (Shamardal). From the family of the 1986 Irish Derby hero Shahrastani, Shamreen's second foal and first winner Shartash is followed by a yearling colt by the aforementioned Siyouni.
