With her sights set firmly on sprinting in 2023, TDN Rising Star Tenebrism (Caravaggio–Immortal Verse {Ire}, by Pivotal {GB}) issued an early warning to that brigade with a smooth comeback win in the Listed Cork S. on Saturday. Keen initially for Ryan Moore, the 11-10 favourite eventually settled behind the pace and when cajoled to the front approaching the furlong pole showed her familiar surge to take control and register a 1 3/4-length success from the 3-year-old Wodao (Fr) (Showcasing {GB}).

“She could go to Naas in two weeks and then to Royal Ascot, where she could run in both the group ones [the King's Stand and Platinum Jubilee],” Aidan O'Brien said of the G1 Cheveley Park S. and G1 Prix Jean Prat heroine, who was racing under a five-pound penalty. “We had been trying to stretch her to seven and a mile, but obviously it is all pure natural speed she has. She has a lovely mind, relaxes and quickens and could be very exciting for the year. We took her here without training her hard and she was really only ready to come racing.”

Tenebrism, whose impressive resume also includes a second in the G1 Prix Rothschild and a third in the G1 Matron S., is the fourth foal out of the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois heroine Immortal Verse whose fifth is fellow Ballydoyle TDN Rising Star Statuette who was last seen winning the G2 Airlie Stud S. A full-sister to the dam of the group 1-placed pair Roseman (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and Baradar (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}), the relative of the champion Last Tycoon (Ire), the GI Matron S. winner Sense Of Style (Thunder Gulch) and the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winners Valentine Waltz (Ire) (Be My Guest) and Tie Black (Ire) (Machiavellian) also has a yearling colt by Wootton Bassett (GB).

3.30 Cork, Listed, €42,500, 3yo/up, 6fT
TENEBRISM (Caravaggio) makes her seasonal bow in this Cork S. as she embarks on a pure sprinting campaign having tried her hand over a mile for most of last term. Successful in the 2021 G1 Cheveley Park S. at this trip, Westerberg and Coolmore's daughter of the high-class Immortal Verse (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) added to her tally over seven in the G1 Prix Jean Prat in July and the world is her oyster now that she is concentrating purely on the speed tests.

4.05 Cork, Mdn, €16,000, 2yo, 5fT
ALABAMA (IRE) (No Nay Never) carries the distinction of being the first juvenile of 2023 to step out from Ballydoyle and also carries some expectation, having been singled out by Aidan O'Brien at last week's press morning. Kin to the G1 Phoenix S. and G2 Norfolk S.-winning sire Sioux Nation by No Nay Never's sire Scat Daddy, the January-foaled bay will be one of the early Royal Ascot hopefuls among the Rosegreen youngbloods.

Caravaggio (Scat Daddy–Mekko Hotke, by Holy Bull), the leading European first-crop sire of 2021, has been acquired by the Japanese Bloodstock Breeders Association (JBBA) and is set to continue his stud career at Shizunai Stallion Station, according to multiple published reports.

Trained by Aidan O'Brien for Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, Caravaggio was perfect in four runs as a juvenile, including a defeat of Mehmas (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot and capped by a four-length success in the G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. His overall winning streak stretched to six when he defeated Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by three-parts of a length in the 2017 G1 Commonwealth Cup during the Royal meeting and he added that year's G2 Flying Five S. ahead of a close third in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S.

Caravaggio covered his first three books of mares at Coolmore Ireland before heading to Ashford Stud in Kentucky. From his first crop of runners, he is already the sire of eight black-type winners, chief among them Irish and English highweight Tenebrism, a daughter of Immortal Verse (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) who won last year's G1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park S. and added the G1 Prix Jean Prat this term. His other pattern winners include G2 Debutante S. winner Agartha (Ire), German Classic winner Maljoom (Ire) and G3 Snow Fairy S. winner Viareggio. Caravaggio's first-crop daughter Her World (Ire) earned the 'TDN Rising Star' distinction with a debut six-length victory in last year's Tyro S. for Wesley Ward. Overall, he has been represented by 78 individual winners, including seven in Australia.

At Shizunai, Caravaggio will join a lineup that already includes Animal Kingdom, Bago (Fr), Creator, Declaration of War, Eskendereya, Makfi (GB), Mischievous Alex and Noble Mission (GB).

After the early retreat of Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and mixed signals from the Classic generation in general this summer, Sunday's G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe will provide more answers if not perhaps the categoric truth about how the generations compare on Sunday. In a fascinating renewal replete with conundrums, the best of the remaining 3-year-olds in action Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) and Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) pit their wits against the matured might of Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}), Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) among others. Any one of at least a dozen scenarios are plausible, particularly given the nature of conditions which are typically autumnal but all the same a shock to the system for those affected by the sudden jolt from the prolonged summer.

Winning Formula?

Given the gruelling nature of the Arc, the 3-year-old generation have always been best served by a summer break following the Classics. In the 1990s, Derby winners were almost expected to enjoy a mid-season sojourn before tackling this test and with the exception of Lammtarra that proved the correct format. Sinndar (Ire), Dalakhani (Ire), Bago (Fr) and Hurricane Run (Ire) continued that trend from the turn of the millennium and by accident Luxembourg fits the bill this time. More so than Onesto, Vadeni and compatriot Westover, Ballydoyle's G1 Irish Champion S. winner is fresh having spent the summer months in rehab. When Onesto and Vadeni went to Leopardstown, they had the edge of having respectively won a G1 Grand Prix de Paris and a G1 Eclipse S., so all power to Luxembourg for having overcome. Now he has to back it up off a work regimen that O'Brien would not be in a hurry to repeat.

Go West?

Despite the Irish Champion one-two-three and Eclipse win, the 3-year-olds have no absolute claim to dominance over their elders due to Westover and Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) having been so disappointing in the only meaningful top-level clash of the generations over this trip in the King George. The former, who had looked such a bright Arc prospect when scoring by seven lengths in the Irish Derby, was guilty of over-racing there much as Juddmonte's former Arc hero Workforce (GB) (King's Best) had in 2010. If able to get back on track, he is the one member of his age group that is guaranteed to stay this trip with relish and jockey Rob Hornby had an interesting insight into the King George flop on Friday evening. “He was immediately running downhill at Ascot and can jump into the bridle, so I think with a bit of protection for the first two furlongs I can hopefully get him into a nice rhythm and then it's a case of following the right horses,” he said. “I have a lot of confidence in his stamina, he has that in abundance and will handle slower ground so hopefully that will play to his strengths.”

The Perfect Arc Candidate?

In an edition strangely thin on female representation, there is at least the reassuring presence of one who excels in ticking boxes. Kirsten Rausing's Alpinista has all ducks in a row, with five consecutive Group 1 prizes earned in Germany, France and England and even a kind draw handed to her in the final piece of the puzzle on Thursday. Her 4-year-old campaign was all about the pursuit of the three German Group 1s collected by her grandmother Albanova (GB) (Alzao) and, while she achieved that feat with metronomic consistency, it was only in hindsight that it was deemed a notable one. Creating only marginal public interest at the time of her defeats of Torquator Tasso and Mendocino (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), she now boasts some of the contest's best form as a result and has been primed for this one target ever since. What the lack of a 5-year-old-winning mare in the last 85 years says about her chance is anyone's guess and probably means very little, but the fact is that Newmarket's legend Sir Mark Prescott who is venturing to ParisLongchamp for the first time in 21 years was not born when Corrida triumphed as a more mature vintage back in 1937.

The Adlerflug Connection

Torquator Tasso and Mendocino represent the much-missed Schlenderhan sire Adlerflug and along with live outsider Alenquer (Fr) combine to give him a presence in this year's renewal second only to Frankel who has a quartet. With In Swoop (Ire) going so close in 2020, this is a sire influence to take seriously in a race that is hand in glove for his prodigal sons. All three represent him strongly, with even M M Stables' G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup hero Alenquer impossible to discount going back up to a mile and a half for the first time since finishing a close sixth despite losing a front shoe in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan Mar. 26. “He wasn't half the horse mentally he is now when he ran a decent race in this last year and won on bottomless ground at the Curragh,” jockey Tom Marquand said of Alenquer, who is fitted with blinkers for the first time and who if successful would be a monumental result for the William Haggas stable which held such a pivotal role in shaping this year's renewal. Mendocino, who would also be providing one of the contest's big stories if helping Rene Piechulek to back-to-back wins on two different horses, has the talent to make waves here. Stall Salzburg's chestnut has been expertly steered towards this prize by Sarah Steinberg and showed his mettle in the G1 Grosser Preis Von Baden, where he had to make up ground on Torquator Tasso in the most demanding part of the race. He is a more mature prospect than the one beaten just 3/4 of a length by the year-older Alpinista in November's G1 Grosser Preis Von Bayern at Munich.

Centenary Celebrations To Continue?

While Vadeni is rightly centre of attention on Sunday as the key representative of The Aga Khan's Studs in its 100th year in operation, the opening G1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere could be the best chance of seeing the famed emerald green silks in the winner's enclosure again. The Johnny Murtagh-trained G2 Railway S. winner Shartash (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) suffered a coshing by the peerless Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never) in The Curragh's G1 Phoenix S. Aug. 6, but returned unbowed to run third in the Sept. 11 G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. over this seven-furlong trip. With an ideal draw, the homebred is poised to deal with Ballydoyle's hard-working The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and the key domestic player, Gerard Augustin-Normand and OTI Management's Sept. 4 G3 Prix la Rochette scorer Tigrais (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}). “He's run in the two best Group 1s in Ireland and isn't far off them,” Murtagh said. “He needs to put it all together again and is a colt who I think will get through soft ground.”

Boussac Beauties

There are few things more satisfying in the autumn than the emergence of a new star filly in the G1 Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac, with the likes of Six Perfections (Fr) (Celtic Swing {GB}), Divine Proportions (Kingmambo), Finsceal Beo (Ire) (Mr. Greeley), Zarkava (Ire) (Zamindar) and Found (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) all issuing early warning of what was to follow. The Wertheimers' TDN Rising Star Kelina (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) is as exciting a juvenile as France possesses at present and despite not tackling black-type company has shown enough in two authoritative wins at Deauville Aug. 6 and Chantilly Sept. 10 to make her one of the country's leading hopes on the card. This is deep, however, and anything unexposed that is capable of downing Mohamed Saeed Al Shahi's Aug. 20 G2 Prix du Calvados winner Wed (Fr) (Profitable {Ire}), Yeguada Centurion's Sept. 8 G3 Prix d'Aumale scorer Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}), Gestut Fahrhof's Aug. 31 G3 Zukunfts-Rennen winner Habana (Ger) (Kingman {GB})–a second TDN Rising Star in the line-up–and Ballydoyle's July 21 G3 Silver Flash S. scorer Never Ending Story (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) can legitimately boast genuine Classic prospects for 2023.

The Return Of Nashwa

While there are surprisingly no 3-year-old fillies in the Arc, the one who could lay claim to being the best of those campaigned over middle distances is in a strong renewal of the G1 Prix de l'Opera Longines. Imad Al Sagar's TDN Rising Star Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is kept to the original gameplan of this followed by a tilt at the Breeders' Cup and arrives in Paris fresh from a break having beaten La Parisienne (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) in the June 19 G1 Prix de Diane and the subsequent G1 Prix Jean Romanet winner Aristia (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) in Goodwood's G1 Nassau S. July 28. Slow ground is probably not her bag and there is the considerable threat of the May 29 G1 Prix Saint-Alary and Sept. 11 G2 Blandford S. scorer Above The Curve (American Pharoah) and the June 26 G1 Pretty Polly S. runner-up My Astra (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), as well as a host of others with a high-class level of form. There is another spoke in the wheels for Nashwa, as Teddy Grimthorpe pointed out. “She's obviously drawn 13, which is not ideal but we have to live with that,” he said. “She's had a pretty straightforward preparation in every way, she seems to be in good form and she's continued to develop, which has been pleasing. She's had a few positive bits of work, her last few bits of work were very decent. Both her father and her mother went on heavy ground, so we have to be at least hopeful. I don't think anybody wants to race on extreme ground, but I think she should have it in her DNA to be able to act on it.”

Queen For A Day?

Having come up against Highfield Princess (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) in the G1 Nunthorpe S. at York Aug. 19 and Trillium (GB) (No Nay Never) in the Sept. 11 G2 Flying Childers S. at Doncaster, The Platinum Queen (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}) bids to go one better and become the first juvenile to land the G1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp Longines since 1978. There is no stand-out this year and the Richard Fahey trainee has a favoured draw. “The draw gods have smiled on us somewhat, being in seven,” Middleham Park Racing's Tom Palin said. “You're closer to the rail there and a few of her market rivals are drawn a little bit less favourably than ourselves. In theory, as long as she breaks well, she should be able to get out and get a nice forward position on the rail. It's not going to be her most favourable conditions, but you are not going to get many other days where you are favourite for a Group 1 and getting all that weight from rivals.” TDN Rising Star Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) was third to Highfield Princess on similar ground in The Curragh's G1 Flying Five Sept. 11 and this looks less tough. “It was soft ground at the Curragh and it rained all day, she won at Goodwood in soft ground as a 2-year-old, so hopefully she will get through it, especially over five,” Ed Crisford said.

Kinross Primed For Ultimate Target

Without doubt the most affected by the draw is the seven-furlong G1 Qatar Prix de la Foret Presente par Education Above All and Marc Chan's TDN Rising Star Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) has been done no favours handed stall nine. What he does have is career-best form at present, having added Doncaster's G2 Park S. to the G2 City Of York S. and trainer Ralph Beckett is hoping Frankie Dettori gets the tactics right. “He got a little bit too far back last year–let's just hope it doesn't happen again on Sunday,” he said. TDN Rising Star Tenebrism (Caravaggio) is in one and is unbeaten at shorter than a mile, with her July 10 G1 Prix Jean Prat success a key piece of form. Whatever Alpinista does in the main event, Kirsten Rausing's July 26 G2 Lennox S. scorer Sandrine (GB) (Bobby's Kitten) looks poised to give her a thrill with conditions set up to suit ideally.

Deauville's four-week bonanza begins on Tuesday with an array of class across four pattern races headed by the G1 Prix Rothschild, which brings together two of Europe's leading fillies in Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) and Tenebrism (Caravaggio). While the former's stamina for this mile is assured and proven, TDN Rising Star Tenebrism has yet to confirm that the trip is within reach. Saffron Beach, who had already displayed her quality at this level when overpowering her rivals in Newmarket's G1 Sun Chariot S. in October, arguably performed to an even higher standard when making light of a five-pound penalty in Royal Ascot's G2 Duke of Cambridge S. on her 2022 European bow June 15.

Jane Chapple-Hyam has no concerns heading into this contest, which sits perfectly in the 4-year-old's program heading to the Breeders' Cup. “It is a small, competitive field, but I feel she is good enough for the task ahead,” she said. “She has turned into a really good traveller now. She was always a little bit sticky as a younger horse, but even when we do go to the Breeders' Cup, I won't be nervous about her travelling. If we have got go on and lead, we will do. She made all in the Sun Chariot and at Ascot, just about.”

Painting The Picture

With Saffron Beach the lead performer on form with stamina to go further, it would be no surprise to see William Buick turn this into a test from some way out. Whatever the obvious talent of Ballydoyle's Tenebrism, the fact remains that she has excelled over six furlongs in the G1 Cheveley Park S. and at seven in this venue's G1 Prix Jean Prat July 10 and has been out of the frame when tried at a mile in the 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. Ryan Moore has to ensure he is not too far out of his ground as the British raider applies the pressure and this will provide the definitive test as to whether she stays or not. “She showed at Ascot that she gets a mile and I think we saw a much better filly last time, with the promise of more to come,” her rider said in his betfair blog.

Hidden Pearls?

Haras de Saint Pair's capable Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who has a trio of pattern-race wins in her native Ireland including the May 22 G2 Lanwades Stud S. at The Curragh, will be prominently placed to add pace pressure and this has been the target for some time according to Paddy Twomey. “It has been the plan all year,” he said. “Andreas Putsch's farm is in Deauville and she was born and reared in Deauville, so the plan is to take her back and go and win there.” Of the French, Yeguada Centurion's May 8 G2 Prix du Muguet winner Sibila Spain (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) could add another dimension if reverting to her old front-running tactics, while the Wertheimers' Goldistyle (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is a daughter of Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) who turned this into her own private procession between 2008 and 2011. She has to improve markedly on her latest fourth in the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil at Chantilly June 19, where she held every chance but weakened late.

A Fast Start

Deauville's opening card begins with the G3 Prix de Psyche Sky Sports Racing for 3-year-old fillies over 10 furlongs, where Andre Fabre holds a strong hand including Ecurie Ama Zingteam's Hidden Dimples (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Impressive when beating the subsequent G1 Prix de Diane runner-up La Parisienne (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) in ParisLongchamp's Listed Prix de la Seine over 11 furlongs May 15, she was a well-beaten fourth trying a mile and a half on soft ground in the G3 Prix de Royaumont at Chantilly June 5. Next up is the G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing over seven furlongs for the juvenile fillies, where Flaxman Stables' July 10 Listed Prix Roland de Chambure runner-up Terrestrial (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) encounters Rashit Shaykhutdinov's TDN Rising Star Gain It (GB) (De Treville {GB}) who impressed with a seven-length success at Saint-Cloud July 16, and Avatara SA & Haras D'Etreham's similarly-unbeaten Sea The Lady (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}). In the six-furlong G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg also for the 2-year-olds, Ballydoyle look for further success with their strong crop with the July 17 G2 Prix Robert Papin runner-up The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Jean-Claude Seroul's June 5 Listed Prix la Fleche scorer and July 10 Listed Prix Yacowlef runner-up Wootton City (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) is among his rivals and she is three pounds better off with Guy Pariente's Sivana (Fr) (Goken {Fr}), who beat her by a head in that five-furlong contest.

It was a weekend in which the Scat Daddy sire-line shone through, at Newmarket and in Deauville, with Group 1 victories for his grand-daughters Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Tenebrism (Caravaggio).

No Nay Never now has five crops of racing age and has twice supplied the winner of the July Cup: first Ten Sovereigns, who is now his stud-mate at Coolmore, and now Jeff Smith's Alcohol Free, whose transformation from miler to sprinter has added an interesting element to what is unfurling into an extraordinarily good season.

The 4-year-old filly did of course win a Group 1 at six furlongs as a juvenile, just over the dyke from the July Course when landing the Cheveley Park S. on the Rowley Mile. But, following her G3 Fred Darling S. in 2021, she then logically stepped up to a mile and looked every bit the star at this trip, winning the Coronation S. and then defeating 2,000 Guineas winner Poetic Flare (Ire) in the Sussex S., for which she will return to Goodwood at the end of the month.

Her July Cup victory on Saturday brought up a second Group 1 success in two days for Rob Hornby, who started his riding career with Andrew Balding at Kingsclere, a yard which has been synonymous with Jeff Smith's colours, most notably through another fast female, his great homebred sprinter Lochsong (GB) (Song {GB}).

Hornby, who secured his first Group 1 victory aboard Scope (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) at Longchamp last October after battling back from injury, could have been forgiven the odd grumpy moment after being replaced on Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the Irish Derby. Westover duly won in the hands of Colin Keane, and days later Scope was put down after being injured on the gallops at Ralph Beckett's stable. Two weeks on from the Irish Derby, however, it was the quietly-spoken Hornby's chance to shine, first on Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in the Falmouth S., and then for his old boss Balding with Alcohol Free in the absence of the suspended champion jockey Oisin Murphy. Hornby's rewards were well deserved.

Immortal Beloved

Another Coronation S. winner was involved in the production of Sunday's G1 Prix Jean Prat winner as Tenebrism, by far the leading light of Caravaggio's first crop, is a daughter of the great Kilfrush Stud-bred Immortal Verse (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who, a year after her racing career ended, put in another star turn when topping the Tattersalls December Mare Sale at 4.7 million gns. The foal she was carrying then, Literary Society (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), retired winless but his subsequent siblings have made up for that as all four of racing age are winners. These include Immortal Verse's current 2-year-old, Statuette (Justify), who became a TDN Rising Star when winning on debut at Navan in May, and then confirmed that early promise with victory in the G2 Airlie Stud S. on Irish Derby weekend. Like Tenebrism, she races for a partnership which involves her breeders Merriebelle Stables and Coolmore, along with Westerberg.

Mehmas a Friend to Lacy Family

There was a pleasing touch of symmetry to the victory of Persian Force (Ire) in Thursday's G2 July S. Like his sire Mehmas (Ire), he had won the conditions race at Newbury on Lockinge day before running second in the G2 Coventry S. and then triumphing at the July meeting. Furthermore, both father and son were bought by Peter and Ross Doyle to be trained by Richard Hannon. Mehmas went on to win the G2 Richmond S. and end his career with placings in the G1 National S. and G1 Middle Park S. before quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting young sires in Europe.

There is also a sense of deja vu for Persian Force's breeders Tom and Barry Lacy. We featured their Ballyheashill Stud in Rhode, Co Offaly, after the Weatherbys Super Sprint win of Persian Force's full-brother Gubbass (Ire) last season. Now the Lacys' 8-year-old mare Vida Amorosa (Ire) has come up with another good 'un.

“She has just the two foals on the ground to have hit the track and both of them are pretty good, and Persian Force looks better than his brother last year,” Barry Lacy told TDN on Monday. “We just took a chance on Mehmas because we really liked him and we just happened to hit the right sire at the right time.”

For the mare's third mating, the Lacys returned to Tally-Ho Stud, sending her to Inns Of Court (Ire) who has his first yearlings at the sales this year. Like Persian Force, the Inns Of Court colt was bought as a foal by the team at Tally-Ho.

Lacy continued, “She has a very nice yearling now at Tally-Ho and he was the nicest of the three foals. If he turns out to be a good racehorse next year we can start to say perhaps it's down to the mare, but at this moment in time we are going to say that it's all about the stallion.

“It does take two to tango but I am trying to keep my feet on the ground, and I do think Mehmas is a very good sire, and he looks like he's going to turn out to be one of the better sires in the country.”

Casting his mind back to Persian Force as a youngster, he added, “He was just such a likeable individual and so relaxed. I wish I could tell you a special story about him as a foal but he was just very straightforward and nothing was an issue. If they were all like him it would be easy. He was just one of those horses who you hoped everything would work out for him and so far it has.”

As her Inns Of Court colt was foaled relatively late, Vida Amorosa missed last year's covering season and is now in foal to another Tally-Ho Stud newcomer, Starman (GB).

“If everything goes well with the foaling, the obvious thing would probably be to go back to Mehmas,” said Lacy.

The family also received a boost over the weekend from Garrus (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who remains a force to be reckoned with at the age of six and won the G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis at Deauville. His dam Queen Of Power (Ire) is a Medicean (GB) half-sister to Vida Amorosa.

Harris Back in Winner's Enclosure

Prior to last Thursday, no horse had run in the name of Peter Harris in Britain since 2015, although we have seen his distinctive silks carried to Group 1 glory by Audarya (Fr) Wootton Bassett {GB}), who is owned by by his daughter Alison Swinburn. Harris's own name made a reappearance last week alongside the promising Gleneagles (Ire) colt Mill Stream (Ire). The half-brother to last season's G2 Richmond S. winner Asymmetric (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) was bred by Redpender Stud, who sold him as a yearling for 350,000gns, and won on debut at Doncaster for Jane Chapple-Hyam.

A former breeder and trainer, Harris, now 88, had notable success with his homebred G1 Middle Park S. winner Primo Valentino (Ire) (Primo Dominie {GB}) and his half-sister, the G2 Cherry Hinton S. winner Dora Carrington (Ire) (Sri Pekan). The latter was one of 43 horses which formed the dispersal of Harris's Pendley Farm Stud stock at Tattersalls in 2010.

Epic Debut

Another more recent dispersal, that of Lady Rothschild's Waddesdon Stud, saw the G1 Pretty Polly S. winner Thistle Bird (GB) (Selkirk) bought by James Wigan on behalf of George Strawbridge for 750,000gns when in foal to Kingman (GB). The mare's resultant foal, Epictetus (Ire), made his debut at Newmarket on Friday and became the latest runner in Europe to earn a TDN Rising Star badge when cruising to the line in front with his ears pricked.

All of Thistle Bird's five foals of racing age are winners, and they include current 3-year-old Jumbly (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who has remained within the Rothschild fold and won last year's Listed Radley S. before finishing runner-up this spring in the G3 Fred Darling S. Her yearling colt is by Lope De Vega (Ire).

Leigh's Influence Continues To Be Felt

Putting herself firmly in the frame to take leading broodmare honours this years is Godolphin's Modern Ideals (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), who is the dam of G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains winner Modern Games as well as Friday's G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. victrix Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). Moreover, in May her 4-year-old son Modern News (GB) (Shamardal) won the Listed Royal Windsor S. and was subsequently second in the G3 Diomed S. at Epsom.

Their grand-dam Epitome (Ire) (Nashwan) was, like Gossamer (GB) (Sadler's Wells), acquired by Sheikh Mohammed when he bought the breeding operation of the late Gerald Leigh, who died 20 years ago last month. Modern Ideals was the seventh of Epitome's 14 foals, born three years before her half-brother Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}), winner of the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and now resident at Haras du Logis.

The aforementioned dual Group 1 winner Gossamer, a sister to Barathea (Ire), turned out similarly to be a great addition to the Godolphin/Darley fold, breeding the G1 Racing Post Trophy winner Ibn Khaldun (Dubai Destination) among three black-type performers.

Aclaim Breezing Up the Table

The National Stud resident Aclaim (Ire) can now count two special fillies among his first crop following the emphatic win of Royal Aclaim (Ire) in the Listed City Walls S. at York. The James Tate-trained 3-year-old is now unbeaten in three starts, having got the better of no less a star than Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) when breaking her maiden in May 2021. But she was then absent from the racecourse for more than a year, and didn't return until June 11 at Bath when she won her second novice contest with ease.

Both she and Aclaim's 1,000 Guineas winner Cachet (Ire) graduated from the breeze-ups, bought from the Craven and Guineas sales respectively for the same sum of 60,000gns. Earlier in the year, Nancy Sexton spoke to Ellie Whitaker and Tegan Clark of WC Equine who consigned Royal Aclaim in their first draft of only two fillies on behalf of breeder Pier House Stud.

Aclaim now sits in second place in the European second-season sires' table behind Churchill (Ire), sire of the Prix du Jockey Club and Eclipse S. winner Vadeni (Fr). Though ahead on prize-money, that pair falls behind Zarak (Fr) when it comes to the number of stakes winners, with the Aga Khan Studs stallion leading that division on five.

Wedding Bells at the Double

It was a hectic week for the bloodstock press pack at a roasting edition of the July Sale at Tattersalls, and particularly so for two members, who were also counting down to their wedding days on Saturday. TDN's own Alayna Cullen married amateur rider and assistant trainer Ross Birkett on the same day that Racing Post sales reporter James Thomas was also trying to juggle reciting his wedding vows with keeping an eye on the July Cup result.

To Ross and Alayna, and James and Molly, we send our congratulations and best wishes for much future happiness.

Delivering the potent acceleration that had seen her claim joint-champion status among the juvenile fillies in the G1 Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket in September, TDN Rising Star Tenebrism (Caravaggio) was firmly in command under optimum conditions in Deauville's seven-furlong G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat on Sunday. Able to draft in mid-pack early, Ballydoyle's 13-2 shot who sports the Westerberg silks was unleashed between Lusail (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and Rozgar (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and after gaining the lead 100 metres from the line stayed on strongly to record a 1 1/4-length verdict over Light Infantry (GB) (Fast Company {Ire}). There was a blanket for the minors, with Light Infantry a short neck in front of Lusail, who was in turn a nose ahead of Accakaba (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), with a nose also separating that rival and Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and a short head between that Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero and Rozgar. “The pace was a little slow and we had to wait–it was tight for room and they were all on top of each other, but she's got that great turn of foot and is a fast filly,” Ryan Moore said of the winner, who had been eighth in the 1000 Guineas and fourth in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot last time June 17.

Tenebrism, whose immediate entry is in Goodwood's star-studded G1 Qatar Sussex S. July 27, was providing another landmark for Aidan O'Brien, who had yet to win the Jean Prat. “She's always shown plenty–she won the Cheveley Park on her second start and the ground was very fast for the Guineas and she got banged around and never got into any rhythm,” Moore, who had returned from action at Belmont hours earlier, added. “She was still a bit green at Ascot and struggled around the bend, but finished well and ran a good race but it was nice to come to a level track on nice ground today. She accelerated through the gap like a motorbike–Caravaggio was fast and she's out of Immortal Verse, who is well known here. She was very comfortable over seven today.”

Light Infantry, who had like Lusail been an eye-catcher when ninth in the 2000 Guineas having missed the break, is set for a return visit to Deauville for next month's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois. “We thought the seven furlongs on fast ground would be against him and I'd like to think he has a bright future and will definitely be better at a mile,” trainer David Simcock said. “He ran better than his finishing position suggested at Newmarket and hopefully he'll come back here in August for the Jacques Le Marois. He is a very straightforward, very talented horse who handles any ground.”

Lusail was putting up another solid effort at the top level and trainer Richard Hannon said, “The mixed tempo of the race maybe cost us the win and other than that, there is nothing more to say. He is very consistent and will almost certainly win us another big one soon. He will most likely head to Goodwood for the [G2] Lennox Stakes or the Sussex.” Christophe Ferland said of Accakaba, “I am torn somewhere between satisfied and disappointed not to have won. I love this filly. She has an exceptional turn of foot and this was a proper race, with the best horses at seven furlongs and a mile–she'll now head to the [G1] Prix Maurice De Gheest.”

Charlie Appleby was pleased with the effort of Modern Games, who was found out by the drop from a mile. “We've got caught for a turn of foot, dropping back to seven and in the end, we know the mile is his best trip,” he said. “Trying to find a mile race for him at this time of the year is difficult, but there is the Sussex or the Jacques Le Marois and if he goes to the former he'll run alongside Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and if he goes for the Marois it will be with Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {Ire}). As
always, he ran a very solid race.”

Pedigree Notes:

Tenebrism, whose much-larger 2-year-old half-sister Statuette (Justify) is making waves having won the G2 Airlie Stud S., currently rates as her sire's best performer from his first crop. The aforementioned Immortal Verse, who captured the G1 Coronation S. and this venue's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, is out of the Listed Prix La Camargo winner and G3 Prix Fille de l'Air runner-up Side of Paradise (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and is a full-sister to Go Lovely Rose (Ire) who is responsible for four black-type performers including the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. runner-up Roseman (Ire) (Kingman {GB}).

Side of Paradise is a daughter of Mill Princess (Ire) (Mill Reef), renowned for producing the Breeders' Cup Mile hero and champion sire Last Tycoon (Ire), as well as the G3 Goldene Peitsche-winning fellow sire Astronef (Ire) and the G3 Prix du Bois scorer and stakes producer The Perfect Life (Ire) (Try My Best). Another of Mill Princess's daughters, Save Me The Waltz (Ire) (Kings Lake), is in turn the dam of the GI Matron S. heroine Sense of Style (Thunder Gulch) and the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Valentine Waltz (Ire) (Be My Guest), while the moderate performer Zelda (Ire) (Caerleon) proved one of the family's best in her second career. Under her are the top sprinter Zipping (Ire) (Zafonic) and the G2 Prix du Gros-Chene winner Beauty Is Truth (Ire) by Immortal Verse's sire Pivotal (GB). Her trio of group 1 winners by Galileo (Ire) are Hermosa (Ire), Hydrangea (Ire) and The United States (Ire).

Things may not have clicked for 'TDN Rising Star' Tenebrism (Caravaggio) so far this season, but there is plenty of road left and Sunday's G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat at Deauville represents an opportunity for a clean slate over a seven-furlong trip that could prove her optimum. So impressive in the G1 Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket in September, the daughter of Immortal Verse (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) who had one of her finest hours here in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois put a disappointing effort in the 1000 Guineas firmly behind her when fourth in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot last time June 17. “We had the option of the Falmouth S., but I think this race over seven furlongs is a good spot for her,” Ryan Moore said. “She clearly saw the mile out very well in the Coronation, but she has plenty of pace and I can see stepping down in trip really suiting her.”

Classic Convergence

Unusually, the winners of the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and Pouliches meet here, having failed in their respective attempts following their May 15 ParisLongchamp Classic victories. In retrospect, the Poulains hero Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) had an impossible task trying to ward off Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) from stall 13 in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly June 5 and he was arguably ridden too aggressively to overcome that compromising draw.

“He's very genuine and he's got a lot of natural pace,” Charlie Appleby said. “Hopefully it will be quick ground, which you can never be certain of in Deauville, but he's showing all the signs he was before the Guineas.” Best in the Pouliches, Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) was only ninth in the Coronation but this seven could be more her metier and she looked strong over it when beating the subsequent G2 German 1000 Guineas winner Txope (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the G3 Prix Miesque at Chantilly in October.

New Opportunity

Sheila and John Lavery's 'TDN Rising Star' New Energy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) has looked a cast-iron seven-furlong performer in two efforts at the top level over a mile, with his second in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas May 21 and eighth in the June 14 G1 St James's Palace S. marked by moments of genuine threat. “I'm hoping it is not too close to Ascot, we've just been keeping him ticking over at home, so until we run him we won't know, but he's a very good traveller,” Sheila Lavery said. “I think seven will suit, he has such a high cruising speed. Ascot was a muddling race and I'm not overly sure whether he stayed the stiff mile.”

Also at Deauville, the Listed Prix Roland de Chambure over the same seven-furlong trip of the Jean Prat sees the 'TDN Rising Star' Breizh Sky (Fr) (Pedro The Great) bid to back up his eight-length debut success over six at Saint-Cloud May 17 racing in the Alain Jathiere silks for the first time.

Saturday's Observations features a half-sister to Group 1 winner Tenebrism (Caravaggio).

1.05 Navan, Mdn, €16,000, 2yo, f, 5f 162yT
STATUETTE (Justify) is the fifth foal out of the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois heroine Immortal Verse (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), making her a half-sister to last year's G1 Cheveley Park S. winner Tenebrism (Caravaggio). Coolmore, Westerberg and Merriebelle Stables' March-foaled chestnut is joined by fellow Ballydoyle trainee Unless (Justify), another by the Triple Crown winner and the first foal out of another Cheveley Park heroine in Clemmie (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). They will have to be smart to deal with Amo Coutinho Partnership's Curragh runner-up Olivia Maralda (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), the Michael O'Callaghan trainee who at 460,000gns was the second-highest-priced lot and top-priced filly at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale.

1.40 Navan, Mdn, €16,500, 2yo, 5fT
AGE OF KINGS (IRE) (Kingman {GB}), the 1.1-million gns Book 1 graduate who went down by a whisker on debut at Naas earlier this month, appears to have things easier in this maiden won three years ago by the G2 July S.-winning sire Royal Lytham (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}). Like him, Westerberg, Magnier, Tabor, Smith and Brant's son of the G2 May Hill S. winner Turret Rocks (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) bears the Ballydoyle standard and after such a promising debut it is anybody's guess what he can achieve.
