The picture for the GI Kentucky Oaks might look a lot different late Saturday afternoon than it does at the present. There are four races on tap-the GIII Gazelle S., the GI Ashland S., the GIII Fantasy and the GII Santa Anita Oak–that will feature more than a dozen serious candidates for the last Friday in April. Five horses among our top 10 are slated to go.

Meanwhile, last weekend's action featured a win in the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks for Crazy Beautiful (Liam's Map) and a strong showing for runner-up Millefeuille (Curlin), who rebounded off a poor effort the in the GII Davona Dale S. At Turfway, the loaded Brad Cox barn had Adventuring (Pioneerof the Nile) primed for a winning effort in the Bourbonette Oaks.

The likely favorite for the Oaks, Travel Column is as solid as they come. Since winning the GII Golden Rod S. last fall at Churchill, she hasn't missed a beat and defeated rival Clairiere in another head-to-head match up in GII Fair Grounds Oaks. The Oaks will be her toughest test to date and she may have to improve a bit to win it. Ran a 90 Beyer in the Fair Grounds race, which may not be good enough to win the Oaks. She will attempt to become the fifth horse since 2008 to parlay a win in the Fair Grounds Oaks into a victory in the Kentucky Oaks. Cox and jockey Florent Geroux have teamed up to win two of the last three runnings of the Kentucky Oaks.

If Clairiere has a flaw it is that she may be dependent on a fast early pace. Fifth early, she was a bit closer when finishing second behind Travel Column in the Fair Grounds Oaks, but still had left herself with too much to do. Perhaps, the extra sixteenth of the mile in the Oaks will be to her liking. Trainer Steve Asmussen will be looking for his third win in the Oaks and his first since Untapable (Tapit) in 2014. Should have a hungry rider. Through March 29, Joe Talamo was just 8 for 112 on the year (7.14%). With Travel Column having won two of her three meetings with Clairiere, she will likely need to run an improved race to win.

3) WILL'S SECRET (Will Take Charge–Girls Secret, by Giant's Causeway)

The story here is the jockey. Jon Court, 60, has been riding for 41 years and broke in in 1980 at Centennial Park in Colorado, which hasn't run a race since 1983. Court picked up the mount for a maiden race back in October and has been there ever since. Got a very favorable trip in the GIII Honeybee S., where she got the lead after posting soft fractions. Rather than stay at Oaklawn for the Fantasy, trainer Dallas Stewart has entered his filly in the Ashland, which is looking like a very tough spot. Stewart won the Oaks in 2006 with Lemons Forever (Lemon Drop Kid). She is the first foal out of Girls Secret (Giant's Causeway), a winner of just one of six career starts.

At long last, we will get to see Malathaat perform as a 3-year-old. She hasn't run since winning the GII Demoiselle S. on Dec. 5 at Aqueduct. Was supposed to start her 3-year-old campaign in the Davona Dale S., but came down with a minor problem, which caused trainer Todd Pletcher to go back to the drawing board. Is the 9-5 morning line favorite in the Ashland. Can a horse win a race as tough as the Oaks off of just one prep?

Like Malathaat, she will be making her first start of 2021 in the Ashland, where she is the second choice in the line at 5-2. The New York-bred filly was brought around slowly by trainer Kenny McPeek, but has showed her sharpness in the mornings. She breezed a half-mile at Gulfstream in 46.53 on March 6. Had an up-and-down year in 2020, peaking with an easy win in the GI Alcibiades S. only to return with fourth-place finishes in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and the Golden Rod. In the GII Golden Rod, she was sent off at 7-10 and was beaten four lengths.

Trainer Bob Baffert doesn't have nearly the ammunition for the Oaks that he has for the GI Kentucky Derby, but you can never count him out in a major race. She broke her maiden in October and then wasn't seen again until she won the GIII Santa Ysabel S. at Santa Anita on March 7. She goes next in the Santa Anita Oaks, where she will have had the benefit of a race. Baffert also has Kalypso (Brody's Cause) knocking on the door for the Oaks, but she may be better suited to shorter distances.

Trainer Chad Brown has been very patient with this daughter of Flatter. She didn't make her first start until January and after winning a maiden race she sat out nearly two months before resurfacing in the March 6 Busher Invitational. A win there put her on the map so far as possible Kentucky Oaks starters go. Has never run beyond a mile or around two turns, but her pedigree suggests that won't be a problem. Brown also has The Grass Is Blue (Broken Vow), but her stock fell when was third in the Busher.

The group of Florida-based 3-year-old fillies wasn't particularly strong this year, so handicappers will have to evaluate what Crazy Beautiful was up against in her win in the Gulfastream Park Oaks. A $250,000 purchase at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall yearling sale, she was a distant second in the GII Davona Dale and no doubt improved in what was her second start of the year. Plus, she did it impressively, closing from last after chasing slow early fractions. Kenny McPeek also won the 2020 Gulfstream Park Oaks with Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil), who finished second in the Kentucky Oaks.

Looks better after Crazy Beautiful came back to win the Gulfstream Park Oaks as she drilled that rival in the Davona Dale. But is still a tough read. She dominated in the Davone Dale, winning by 6 1/2 lengths at odds of 52-1. Before that, showed few signs that she might turn into a star. If the filly that won the Davona Dale shows up she is very much in the mix. But it's hard to have much faith in a horse who could be a one-race wonder.

Another tough read. She comes from the powerful Cox stable, has won two straight and looked good when winning the Bourbonette Oaks in her last start. But that win came over the Tapeta surfaced at Turfway and it's anyone's guess when it comes to whether or not she can beat top horses on dirt. Hails from the Godolphin stable, which has been on a tear all year. Definitely seems to be getting better with each start, but obviously hasn't faced the sort of top echelon fillies she will meet in the Oaks. With Geroux also riding Travel Column, she will need a new jockey at Churchill Downs.

For most of this year, this has been a division where no one necessarily stood out. That all changed last Saturday at the Fair Grounds, where Travel Column won the GII Fair Grounds Oaks, soundly beating her rival, Clairiere (Curlin). Not only did she defeat a top horse, it was a dominating performance. There are still a bunch of preps to go, but unless someone steps up with a phenomenal effort in a prep, Travel Column will be your favorite in the GI Kentucky Oaks.

After running sixth in the Fair Grounds Oaks, Zaajel (Street Sense) drops off our list. We're also taking out Vequist (Nyquist). Though her connections have not announced that she is out of the Oaks after her poor performance in the GII Davona Dale S. on Feb. 22, she has not had a workout since that race, an indication she will not make the Oaks.

The highlight this weekend will be the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks, which will feature Malathaat (Curlin) and Simply Ravishing (Laoban), both of whom will be making a belated 3-year-old debut.

Having trained so many outstanding fillies, Brad Cox is starting to become to the Kentucky Oaks what Bob Baffert is to the GI Kentucky Derby. He's won two of the last three runnings and has the likely favorite this year in Travel Column. It looks like her connections went back to the drawing board after she was defeated by Clairiere in the GII Rachel Alexandra S. Florent Geroux rode her more aggressively as she was never more than a length off the lead. Meanwhile, Clairiere was last at the first call and, from there, had too much to do to catch Travel Column. Travel Column, an $850,000 purchase at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale, could give owner Larry Best, a very big spender at the sales over the last few years, his biggest win yet.

Is an outstanding filly, but can she beat Travel Column? It's been good to see the two go after one another and create a rivalry that started last year in the GII Golden Rod S. Travel Column has won two of their three meetings and, simply, looked like a better horse in the Fair Grounds Oaks. With both running well this year and with a bunch of others stubbing their toe, it would be no surprise if the Oaks exacta was Travel Column-Clairiere. A horse with no early speed, Clairiere may need a fast pace to set up her run in the Oaks.

Trainer Dallas Stewart is always dangerous in these big races, but it's usually with longshots. This time around, he has a quality filly who may be one of the favorites in the race. She took four starts to break her maiden, but once she made it to the winner's circle she has never looked back. Her win last time out in the GIII Honeybee S. was her third in a row and her second straight stakes win. She has never faced Travel Column, but did finish third behind Clairiere in a maiden race last fall at Churchill. The jockey is 60-year-old Jon Court, who, presumably, would become the oldest jockey ever to win the race.

Because she had a minor setback and missed the Davona Dale S., the connections have had to put all their eggs in one basket in the Gulfstream Park Oaks. Unraced since December, Malathaat will need to move forward off of this race to have a chance in the Oaks. She will also need the points, as the 10 she has accrued so far may not be good enough to get her into the field. A beautifully-bred filly who sold for $1.05 million at the sales, she is undefeated in three career starts, but may not have been beating the top guns in this division. Has been working steadily at Palm Beach Downs for her return.

Trainer Kenny McPeek will take an unusual route to the Oaks, starting this filly in just one prep race. A filly who was very good in the GI Alcibiades S. and not so good in the GII Golden Rod S., she is a bit of an enigma. Like so many other top horses trainer Kenny McPeek has developed, she has turned out to be quite a bargain. She cost just $50,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall yearling sale. Broke her maiden on the turf, so if things don't work out for her on her way to the Kentucky Oaks, there's always the option that she could go back to the grass.

The likely favorite in the GII Santa Anita Oaks, a win there would cement her status as the top 3-year-old filly in California. She comes from the Bob Baffert barn, but was not a typical Baffert overnight sensation. She broke her maiden in her second career start after stretching out from 5 1/2 furlongs to a mile and took things to another level when winning the GIII Santa Ysabel S. Baffert will be after his fourth Oaks win and his third since 2011.

Chad Brown is not just a grass trainer. With a filly who could turn out to be one of the better dirt horses he has ever trained, Brown sent her back to New York from Florida for the March 6 Busher Invitational, a move that paid off with a half-length win. She has stayed in New York and is headed to the GII Gazelle S.at Aqueduct. But even if she is to win there, there will be the question of what kind of horses she has been racing against. The New York route to the Kentucky Oaks looks like one of the weakest.

May not be as good as stablemate Clairiere, but certainly belongs in the discussion after finishing second behind Will's Secret in the Honeybee S. at Oaklawn. Is she that good or was the race a fluke? We won't get the results until the Oaks itself as trainer Juan Avila has elected to skip what are, for most, the final round of preps. Will be a big long shot in the Oaks, but if she runs back to the Davona Dale, anything is possible.

Trained by Tony Dutrow, this filly emerged in November with a solid win in a maiden race and followed that up with a runaway win in the Ruthless S. She didn't win in her next start, the Busher, but did pass an important test. In her first start beyond seven furlongs, she set the pace and did not give way until the final yards, losing the one-mile race by a half-length. Has never gone around two turns, so that is another question she will have to answer. If she makes it that far, could be the pacesetter in the Oaks.

Last week's major development was the win by Clairiere (Curlin) in the GII Rachel Alexandra S. presented by Fasig-Tipton, where she won a hard-fought decision over Travel Column (Frosted). With the victory, she has jumped up to the No. 2 spot in our rankings. She also becomes the third daughter of Curlin to make it into the Top 10 and a fourth, Millefeuille (Curlin), is knocking on the door for the Bill Mott stable.

The other big change this week is that Dayoutoftheoffice (Into Mischief) drops out. While the connections say that the GI Kentucky Oaks is still in their plans, it's noteworthy that the filly has not had a published work since Jan. 24. Once she returns to the worktab, we'll put her back on the list.

The clear leader of this division until proven otherwise. Trainer Butch Reid says that all systems are go as he prepares for her 3-year-old debut in the GII Davona Dale S. Feb. 27 at Gulfstream. “She's doing real well and I'm really happy with her,” he said. “She came out of that last breeze [five furlongs in :59.65] good. It was a little faster than I wanted her to go but she handled it well and has been eating up since. All the major work is done, she's where I want her and we're ready to go for the race. We have kept it light with her. We have had three five-eighths works. She can be a bit of a finicky eater so we've been trying to keep her in her feed tub and keep the weight on her because she has a long, tough road ahead of her. This first race will be a nice stepping stone and we expect her to run well.”

Daughter of Curlin moved way up with her win in the Rachel Alexandra, which has been a productive prep for the Kentucky Oaks. Three Rachel Alexandra winners have gone on to win the Oaks since 2014. The top Oaks threat from the powerful Steve Asmussen barn, she didn't get her career started until winning an Oct. 25 maiden at Churchill Downs and followed that up with a second-place finish in the GII Golden Rod S., where she was beaten by Travel Column. Having turned the tables on her rival, she looks best of the Fair Grounds-based horses heading to the Kentucky Oaks. She is the first foal out of Cavorting, winner of the GI Ogden Phipps S., the GI Personal Ensign S. and the GI Test S.

3) MALATHAAT (Curlin–Dreaming of Julia, by A.P. Indy)

The Davona Dale will be a big test for the undefeated daughter of Curlin, who reeled off wins late last year in the Tempted and the GII Demoiselle S. There is a lot to like with her, starting with her breeding and the fact she comes from the Todd Pletcher stable. But she definitely has something to prove, as she has yet to post a particularly fast Beyer number and probably hasn't faced Grade I-level competition as of yet. Her dam Dreaming of Julia was runner-up in the 2013 Davona Dale before winning the GII Gulfstream Oaks by 21 3/4 lengths (video).

Like Malathaat, a product of the potent Pletcher-Shadwell Stable team. She broke her maiden at first asking in December, winning by 7 1/4 lengths at Gulfstream and followed that up with a win in the Forward Gal S. at seven furlongs. Appears to have a world of ability but has plenty to prove, starting with her ability to go two turns. With two top 3-year-old fillies from the same owner, Pletcher will need to figure out a way to keep them apart. Shadwell is well positioned to win its first Kentucky Oaks. Pletcher will be after his fourth win in the race.

After finishing second in the Rachel Alexandra, she slips down a few notches on the list. Then again, there was nothing particularly disappointing about her performance. She was beaten by a good one in Clairiere, and that filly got a perfect ground-saving trip under Joe Talamo. An $850,000 yearling purchase at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga, she is by Frosted out of a Victory Gallop mare and should have no problem getting the Oaks distance of nine furlongs.
Through Feb. 17, she has had just two half-mile breezes this year for trainer Kenny McPeek. That could mean she won't have her first race for a couple of weeks, but McPeek should have plenty of time to get her ready for the Oaks. She was last seen running fourth in the Golden Rod behind Travel Column and Clairiere, a race that looks better now that those two have jumped up and run well this year. Coach (Commissioner), the third-place finisher in that race, also ran well in her 2021 debut, finishing second in the Martha Washington S. But he's certainly high on the homebred owned by Gary and Mary West. “The sky is the limit for this filly,” Breen said. “She's a nice, fast horse.” Her dam, Devilish Lady (Sweetsouthernsaint) was claimed for $16,000 but went on to win the GIII Azalea S.

The third Curlin on the list and an Ontario-bred, Curlin's Catch made the list after winning the Suncoast S. at Tampa Bay Downs for trainer Mark Casse. Casse could have kept her at Tampa Bay but has decided instead to give her what will be a serious test in the Davona Dale. Casse has another possible starter in the Oaks. Also a daughter of Curlin, Souper Sensational will look to get back on track after finishing sixth in the Rachel Alexandra.

Romped in her first start, a $20,000 maiden claimer at Monmouth, for trainer John Stephens before showing up in the Chad Brown barn in her next start. She won that day, as well, in a Keeneland allowance race. She continues to improve and did her best running to date when winning the Busanda S. at Aqueduct. Remains in New York and will likely take that route to the Kentucky Oaks. Blinkers seemed to have helped her in the Busanda.

With the year having just begun, it will take a while for the picture for the GI Kentucky Oaks to come into focus. For now, the fillies who thrived last year dominate this Top 10 list, but that can, and likely will, change as the calendar works its way toward the first Friday in May and new names emerge in the major preps for the Oaks.

It is, at the very least, a solid group, headed by GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Vequist, who will be named the champion 2-year-old filly of 2020. For her, and several others on the list, it will all come down to whether or not they peaked at two or if they have made a successful transition from their freshmen campaigns to their 3-year-old campaigns.

Saturday’s racing will include the first 2021 Oaks prep of any kind as a field of nine will compete in the Silverbulletday S. at Fair Grounds. All eyes will be on Sun Path, a blowout winner of an allowance race in New Orleans last month. She is trained by Brad Cox, who won last year’s Oaks with Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil).

1). VEQUIST (Nyquist–Vero Amore, by Mineshaft)

With victories in the GI Spinaway S. and in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies last year, she was clearly the most accomplished 2-year-old filly of 2020. There’s nothing not to like about the daughter of Nyquist, who has displayed speed, class and the ability to win around two turns and at a mile-and-a-sixteenth.

Soon to be named the champion 2-year-old filly of 2020, Vequist had her first work of 2021 Saturday when she breezed a half-mile in 49.45 at Palm Meadows.

“Right after the Breeders’ Cup we sent her to Barry Eisman’s place in Ocala for a little R & R,” trainer Butch Reid said. “She had a nice six weeks off while there and I then brought her to Palm Meadows. She had her first breeze Saturday and went a nice half-mile in 49 and change. That served to wake her up. All systems are go.”

And how has she done since her break?

“There are a couple of guys in my barn here at Palm Meadows who happened to be in our barn last summer at Saratoga and they remarked how much she had grown and how much weight she had put on since last summer,” Reid said. “Sometimes, it’s a little deceiving to your own eyes when you see them every day, but these guys hadn’t seen her in six months and they thought she looked like a different horse. They did a sensational job with her at Ocala. She’s put on weight and she’s really maturing.”

Next Start: GII Davona Dale S., GP, Feb. 27
Kentucky Oaks Points: 24

2). SUN PATH (Munnings–Touch the Star, by Tapit)

Could be the best among the “new faces” that did not run in the Breeders’ Cup. After finishing second in her debut, the ‘TDN Rising Star’ won a maiden at Churchill by three lengths and followed that up with a 12 3/4-length romp in an allowance on Dec. 18 at Fair Grounds. She is a full-sister to Bonny South, the winner of the 2020 GII Fair Grounds Oaks.

“At this stage of the game, she’s better [than Bonny South],” Cox said. “She showed more this summer than Bonny showed as a 2-year-old. She’s got a long way to go to catch up to Bonny’s accomplishments, but at this stage of the game, there’s more talent and speed there and she does things maybe a touch easier.”

Owned by Juddmonte Farms, trained by Cox and ridden by Florent Geroux, she is certainly in capable hands. Cox has won two of the last three runnings of the Kentucky Oaks.

Her one flaw may be how she gets out of the gate. She broke through the gate prior to the start of the allowance race and she also had gate problems in her two previous starts.

Will be in action this weekend, heading the Silverbulletday.

Next Start: Silverbulletday S., FG, Jan. 16
Kentucky Oaks Points: 0

3). DAYOUTOFTHEOFFICE (Into Mischief–Gottahaveadream, by Indian Charlie)

Like Vequist, Dayoutoftheoffice spent some time in Ocala relaxing after she finished second in the Juvenile Fillies and only recently returned to the Tampa Bay Downs barn of trainer Tim Hamm.

“She’s put on some weight and she seems happy,” Hamm said. “She’s doing great.”

The daughter of Into Mischief snuck up on a lot of people when she won the GIII Schuylerville S. at Saratoga by six lengths as a 19-1 outsider. She followed that up with a two-length win in the GI Frizette S. and was the third choice in the Juvenile Fillies at 4-1. She ran well that day to finish second, but it was a performance that raises some questions. In her first try around two turns, she led in the stretch before Vequist ran by her for the win. Could she have distance limitations? That’s a question that will likely be answered early on in 2021.

Hamm said she will make her 3-year-old debut in either the Davona Dale or the GIII Honeybee S. on March 6 at Oaklawn.

Next Start: Undecided
Kentucky Oaks Points: 18

4). TRAVEL COLUMN (Frosted–Swingit, by Victory Gallop)

Another Brad Cox runner and ‘TDN Rising Star’ who prospered later on in the year and now has designs on the Kentucky Oaks. A $850,000 purchase at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling sale, she didn’t run particularly well when a distant third in the GI Darley Alcibiades S., but was a much different horse when recording an impressive win in the GII Golden Rod S. at Churchill Downs. She wound up last behind moderate fractions after being knocked around at the start and had to alter course in the stretch to find running room. Still, she prevailed by a length. Daughter of Frosted looks like she can improve and should be a major player on the road to the Oaks.

Next Start: GII Rachel Alexandra S. presented by Fasig-Tipton, FG, Feb. 13
Kentucky Oaks Points: 12

5). MALATHAAT (Curlin–Dreaming of Julia, by A.P. Indy)

There appears to be a lot of upside to this filly who went for seven figures at the yearling sales and now runs for Shadwell Stable. The ‘TDN Rising Star’ is three for three and already has a win at a mile-and-an-eighth, in the GII Demoiselle S. at Aqueduct. That she is by Curlin suggest that the best is yet to come.

In some respects, the Demoiselle was not her most impressive performance. Sent off at 2-5, she looked beaten in mid-stretch but had enough class to grind out a win by three-quarters of a length in a race run over a sloppy track.

“She was never comfortable and not running into a spot I wanted,” jockey John Velazquez said afterward. “She never really put that much effort into keeping a spot. Finally, when I tipped her out heading to the quarter-pole, she started running.”

While this could be the year that Malathaat blossoms, she will need to run faster. Her best Beyer number so far is the 83 she got when winning the Tempted S. She got a 76 in the Demoiselle.

Next Start: GII Davona Dale S., GP, Feb. 27
Kentucky Oaks Points: 10

6). GIRL DADDY (Uncle Mo–Cara Marie, by Unbridled’s Song)

Daughter of Uncle Mo was a creditable third in the Juvenile Fillies, losing the place position by a nose, in what was her first career defeat. She earned a 90 Beyer figure that day, the best of her brief career. She had been impressive in her two earlier starts, a maiden win at Ellis Park and a two-length victory in the GIII Pocahontas at Churchill Downs. There are no serious knocks on the ‘TDN Rising Star’, but she may have to improve to be able to beat the likes of Vequist and some others. Will try to give trainer Dale Romans his first Oaks win.

Next Start: Undecided
Kentucky Oaks Points: 14

7). SIMPLY RAVISHING (Laoban–Four Wishes, by More Than Ready)

Hard to get a read on this filly. Trainer Ken McPeek, so adept at finding quality horses at the sales for modest prices, plucked this one out of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling sale for $50,000. She won her first three races, including the GI Alcibiades, and it looked like she might be on her way to championship honors. Instead, she finished fourth in the Breeders’ Cup and followed that up with a fourth-place finish in the Golden Rod as the 7-10 favorite. At the very least, she will need to return to the form she showed in the Alcibiades to be considered a top Oaks contender. Did she peak too early?

Next Start: Undecided
Kentucky Oaks Points: 13

8). KALYPSO (Brody’s Cause–Malibu Cove, by Malibu Moon)

Early indications are that the California-based 3-year-old fillies are not a particularly strong group. The Beyer numbers for most of their races have been on the slow side. For now, Kalypso looks as good as any. A $240,000 purchase at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Select Yearling Sale, she improved quite a bit to win the GII Santa Ynez S. over stablemate Frosteria (Frosted), who is still a maiden, for the Bob Baffert barn. The Santa Ynez is a seven-furlong race, so she still needs to show that she can thrive at longer distances. While this one is not worthy as of yet of cracking the top three or four, it would be a mistake to discount anything that Baffert sends out.

Next Start: GII Las Virgenes S., SA, Feb. 6
Kentucky Oaks Points: 14

9). VARDA (Distorted Humor–She’ll Be Right, by Sky Mesa)

Another horse from the Baffert stable, the good news is that she is a Grade I winner, which she accomplished in the GI Starlet S. at Los Alamitos. The bad news is that she hasn’t run nearly fast enough to be considered among the best in her division. Sent off at 17-1 in the five-horse Starlet, her time for the mile-and-a-sixteenth was 1:44 2/5, good for just a 68 Beyer. That puts her 25 points behind Vequist’s best. That doesn’t mean she can’t improve. But will need to post a significantly faster number before climbing to the top of this list.

Next Start: GII Las Virgenes S., SA, Feb. 6
Kentucky Oaks Points: 14

10). SOUPER SENSATIONAL (Curlin–Kateri, by Indian Charlie)

She’s never run outside of Canada and has only raced on a synthetic surface, so she is a bit of an unknown as she heads into Saturday’s Silverbulletday at Fair Grounds. A $725,000 buy at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling sale, she runs for Live Oak Plantation and trainer Mark Casse. The ‘TDN Rising Star’ looked outstanding in her two career starts, winning easily in a maiden event at Woodbine before following that up with a four-length win in the Glorious Song S. Another who is by Curlin, so there’s no reason why she won’t keep getting better.

Next Start: Silverbulletday S., FG, Jan. 16
Kentucky Oaks Points: 0

Nothing can overshadow the GI Kentucky Derby, but the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks will come as close as it gets. The showdown between the brilliant ‘TDN Rising Star‘ Gamine (Into Mischief) and the indomitable Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) could make for the most compelling race of the year. Both have been so good that it is hard to see one losing, but one must. This is the 3-year-old version of Rachel Alexandra versus Zenyatta.

With Swiss Skydiver polishing off the competition once again in last Saturday’s GI Alabama S., the last Oaks prep has been run and the field is all but set. Envoutante (Uncle Mo), Crystal Ball (Malibu Moon), Harvey’s Lil Goil (American Pharoah) and Spice Is Nice (Curlin) have all fallen off the list after being beaten a long way in the Alabama.

Meanwhile, Swiss Skydiver’s jockey assignment is not yet set. Trainer Kenny McPeek said the choice has come down to Brian Hernandez, Jr. or Tyler Gaffalione, who rode her in the Alabama. And a familiar name has reemerged. Though his filly has not started since Mar. 8, trainer Simon Callaghan reports that ‘Rising Star‘ Donna Veloce (Uncle Mo) is back in serious training and will have a work Friday at Del Mar that will determine whether she goes in the Oaks or the GII Eight Belles S.

Reasons why Gamine will beat Swiss Skydiver: she is the faster of the two horses. She ran a 110 Beyer in the GI Longines Acorn S. and a 108 in the GI Longines Test S. The best Swiss Skydiver has managed a 102, her number for the Alabama. She has brilliant early speed and can use that to her advantage. There are not a lot of other front-running types lining up for the Oaks and Gamine may well find herself loose on the lead. She cost $1.8 million at the sales, $1.765 million more than Swiss Skydiver went for. Bob Baffert is very hard to beat when he comes into these big races with talented horses. Among the Big 2, Gamine is the more unproven filly because we don’t know just yet if she will be at her best at a mile-and-an-eighth, but if she crushes the field we are definitely talking about one of the best of all time.

Reasons why Swiss Skydiver will beat Gamine: While distance is an unknown for Gamine, Swiss Skydiver is rock solid at nine furlongs. That’s her edge over Gamine, the distance. She cost $35,000 at the sales as compared to $1.8 million for Gamine and underdogs do have a way of coming through. Trainer Kenny McPeek, who takes a backseat to no one, is due to win an Oaks. He’s winless in nine tries, but has finished second twice. She seems to get better with every start and is coming off a career-best race in the Alabama. Since she came into her own in the March 28 GII Gulfstream Park Oaks, Swiss Skydiver has always fired. She just doesn’t have a bad day. She’s simply a very good horse.

Does she need both Gamine and Swiss Skydiver to have a bad day in order to win? The most likely answer is yes. After finishing behind Gamine in an allowance at Oaklawn (she was elevated to first after Gamine tested positive for lidocaine) and second behind Swiss Skydiver in the GII Santa Anita Oaks, Speech probably has to improve four or five lengths to have any chance. That’s not a knock on her but an indication of how good the Big 2 are. Doesn’t have the speed of Gamine, but can press the pace and might be put in the position of having to go against Gamine early. Will be seeking a third Kentucky Oaks win over the last three years for co-owner Sol Kumin, who won the Oaks in 2018 with Monomoy Girl (Tapizar).

Her potential re-entry into the Oaks picture was unexpected, as she will come into the race off a layoff of nearly six months. Can she fire her best shot after so much time on the bench? She will have to do so to have any chance and maybe even to finish in the top four. A tall task, but let’s not forget what a talented filly this horse is. She finished second in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies after just one prior start, a 6 1/2-furlong maiden, and she beat Speech by 4 1/4 lengths in her lone start this year. Connections have said she may go in the seven-furlong GII Eight Belles S. over the Oaks. Her status will be determined after a work Friday.

Is second on the Kentucky Oaks points list, trailing only Swiss Skydiver. After finishing a distant fourth in the GI Ashland S., she didn’t appear to have the stuff to be a major contender in the Oaks. She didn’t come through in her biggest test to that point and was throwing in Beyer numbers in the 80s, which weren’t going to get it done in the Oaks. But it’s time to take a second look at her. She was no threat to winner Swiss Skydiver in the Alabama, but finished second ahead of some good horses in what was likely the best race of her life. It appears she liked the mile-and-a-quarter in the Alabama.

Really no telling how good this filly is. While trainer Brad Cox threw Bonny South into two straight Grade I events, he has picked out a couple of easy spots of late for his other Oaks contender. Probably the biggest knock on her is that she lost to Swiss Skydiver by 13 1/4 lengths in the Fantasy. No matter how this turns out, it is a remarkable feat for sire Daredevil (also the sire of Swiss Skydiver) to have two fillies in the running for the Oaks. In November, Daredevil was sold to overseas interests and now stands in Turkey.

Will be one of several horses in the race who go off at odds of 20-1 or higher and won’t be given much of a chance by most handicappers. The best thing that can be said for her is that she ran the race of her life when winning the GIII Monmouth Oaks in her last start. But she will be facing a much, much tougher field at Churchill and hasn’t done enough yet to suggest she is capable of beating the very best 3-year-old fillies in the country.

If you go on recent form, she doesn’t have a prayer. She was beaten 11 3/4 lengths in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks, which didn’t feature a particularly tough field. For her to even come close she’s going to have to duplicate the form she showed over the winter at Gulfstream for perpetually hot trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. Even though her sire won the GI Belmont S., she shows signs of being at her best around one turn and in races at a mile or less.

Like Swiss Skydiver, she cost just $35,000 at the sales, going for that price at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern Fall Yearling Sale in 2018. She entered the Kentucky Oaks picture with a half-length win at 38-1 in the GIII Delaware Oaks, but couldn’t back that up when second in the Monmouth Oaks.
Trainer Dallas Stewart is known for his ability to get big long shots ro run surprisingly big races in major events. He won the Oaks in 2016 with 47-1 shot Lemons Forever (Lemon Drop Kid). Can he do it again? It will be very difficult. Tempers Rising shows just a maiden win from 10 career start and was beaten last time out in an allowance race at Ellis Park. She did run second behind Bonny South in the GII Fair Grounds Oaks. Stewart will need all of his longshot magic to get this one to finish on the board.

It was a busy Saturday at Keeneland for the nation’s top 3-year-old fillies, as a field of five contested the GI Ashland S. and Swiss Skydiver (Daredveil) ventured outside her division as her connections boldly took on males in the GII Toyota Blue Grass S. At the end of the day, the deck was shuffled some, but not much. Speech (Mr. Speaker), already a highly regarded Oaks contender, won the Ashland and Swiss Skydiver was terrific in a second-place finish against the boys.

With the Oaks less than eight weeks away, the number of meaningful preps for the race is starting to dwindle. Most of the action will be in Saratoga, where the meet includes the GI Coaching Club American Oaks, the GI Test S. and the GI Alabama S., races that should have an impact on the Oaks picture.

We keep flip-flopping between Swiss Skydiver and Gamine for the top spot and return Swiss Skydiver to No. 1 after her second-place finish against males in the Blue Grass. Considering that she ran that well against the boys and had reeled off three straight graded stakes wins against fillies prior to that, she’s done more than enough to deserve top billing in the Oaks. She’s as solid as they come and there are no knocks against her. It’s going to take a freakishly talented filly to beat her, and Gamine may well be that good. But she’s going to have to prove it on the racetrack.

Still amazing to think that trainer Kenny McPeek found her at the sales for just $35,000. Would be fun to see her in the GI Kentucky Derby and she has enough points to get in, but McPeek and owner Peter Callahan have said she is likely to go next in Oaks.

Equineline PPs. KY Oaks Points: 50.

Considering that she turned in one of the best races by a 3-year-old filly in decades when destroying the opposition in the GI Acorn S, Gamine very well could turn out to be a superstar. As good as Swiss Skydiver is, Gamine may just be better. No one knows what the ceiling is. But she definitely has more to prove, most importantly her ability to win around two turns or at a mile and an eighth. She did win her only two-turn race, beating Speech in an allowance race at Oaklawn, but wasn’t nearly as explosive or impressive that day as she was in the one-mile, one-turn Acorn. Trainer Bob Baffert has said the GI Longines Test S. at seven furlongs may be next for Gamine, which make for an unusual route to the Kentucky Oaks. Is it an indication that he believes her best distance is shorter than nine furlongs?

If ever a horse were due for a big win.

Speech came into the Ashland having finished second in four straight races. She kept running into tough customers, whether it was Swiss Skydiver in the GII Santa Anita Oaks or Gamine in the Oaklawn allowance. The betting public thought it would happen again. Speech was the 4-1 second choice in the Ashland, while Venetian Harbor was sent off at 3-5. Venetian Harbor got the trip, getting a comfortable early lead. But Speech had no problem going by her. The losses to Swiss Skydiver and Gamine suggest that she will have a tough time beating the top two in the Oaks. She might just be a good filly who came around in the wrong year.

This is a very talented filly, but probably not a Kentucky Oaks winner. The question with her all along has been how far does she want to go? After the Ashland, it’s pretty obvious that nine furlongs is a stretch for her. She made the lead easily and the pace was not fast, but she had no answer when Speech came to challenge her. The story was the same when she cleared the field in the Fantasy only to be run down by Swiss Skydiver. Her connections must now decide if they even want to try the Oaks or look for shorter races like the Test.

Rather than tackle the best of the division, trainer Brad Cox has been picking easier spots for Shedaresthedevil, a strategy that has been working. After winning an allowance at Churchill Downs by six lengths, she came back in the GIII Indiana Oaks, where she romped by five lengths. It’s gotten her back on track after she was a distant third in the GIII Fantasy S. at Oaklawn. She’ll need to step it up to be able to win the Oaks, but has at least proven she knows how to win. Her resume also includes a victory in the GIII Honeybee S.

She was scratched out of the Ashland to go in the Coaching Club American Oaks. That’s a smart move by trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr., who, no doubt, figured out that the CCA Oaks was going to come up weak this year, a lot weaker than the Ashland. At six-for-seven lifetime, she has a remarkably good record. The lone defeat came in the Gulfstream Park Oaks, where she was a distant seventh to Swiss Skydiver as the 19-10 favorite. She came back to win the Hollywood Wildcat S. at Gulfstream, but didn’t face much that day. She will need to win the CCA Oaks convincingly to be considered a serious contender for the Kentucky Oaks.

A $1.05-million yearling purchase trained by Todd Pletcher, she fell out of the top 10 after a poor showing in the Gulfstream Park Oaks. She’s back after winning a July 3 allowance at Belmont, her first start in more than three months. She’ll go next in the mile-and-a-quarter Alabama. That means she’d have to come back in three weeks for the Oaks and cut back in distance. That’s not ideal, but neither is it impossible. She’s shown a lot of talent and the seven-figure price tag at the sales stands out. Should be getting better.

KY Oaks Points: 20

Among the reasons Kenny McPeek gave for running Swiss Skydiver in the Blue Grass was that he felt he could still win the Ashland with Envoutante. Facing proven stakes horses, it was a tall order for a filly coming of an allowance win, but she didn’t embarrass herself. She finished third, beaten 6 3/4 lengths. She’s a late-developing filly who didn’t break her maiden until April, so she has every right to improve. A good showing in the Alabama could be her ticket into the Oaks.

Unraced since winning the GII Fair Grounds Oaks on March 21, Bonny South didn’t show much in her return in the Ashland. She never seriously threatened and finished fourth in the five-horse field. With Beyer numbers in the mid-eighties, she appeared to be slower than her main rivals at Keeneland. Has more than enough points to get into the Oaks, but she would really have to improve to win a race at that level.

After you get past the top three or four, the list gets pretty thin. That’s why a horse like Water White makes it into the Top 10. Yes, she was beaten 19 1/4 lengths in the Acorn, but Gamine thrashed everybody that day. She picked up most of her Oaks points when winning the Busher Invitational in her previous start. Probably not a serious contender for the Oaks.
