Godolphin's hitherto unraced Kalidasa (GB) (Frankel {GB}–So Mi Dar {GB}, by Dubawi {Ire}) hit the heights at 2022's Tattersalls October Book 1 fixture when knocked down for a sale-topping 2.8-million guineas, but missed his intended debut at Kempton last month with a foot infection.

Sent off at prohibitive odds of 1-3 for his belated unveiling in a low-key affair at Wolverhampton, Friday evening, he made no mistake and registered a 1 1/2-length triumph in the extended one-mile contest.

The March-foaled bay is out of G3 Musidora S.-winning G1 Prix de l'Opera third So Mi Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), herself a full-sister to MG1SW sire Too Darn Hot (GB) and multiple Group 1-placed distaffer Lah Ti Dar (GB).

Bowling along in handy third after an alert getaway, the 1-3 lock turned for home in second and kept on powerfully under whipless cajoling in the straight to defeat Alvesta (GB) (Study Of Man {Ire}) by an ultimately comfortable 1 1/2 lengths. Kalidasa is the third of four foals and first scorer from two runners out of G3 Musidora S.-winning G1 Prix de l'Opera third So Mi Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), herself a full-sister to MG1SW sire Too Darn Hot (GB), multiple Group 1-placed distaffer Lah Ti Dar (GB) and Listed River Eden S. runner-up Darmoiselle (GB). So Mi Dar, who is a daughter of MG1SW distaffer Dar Re Mi (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}), is also kin to multiple Group-placed sire De Treville (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). The March-foaled bay is a full-brother to the 2-year-old filly So Dar Licious (GB). Sales history: 2,800,000gns Ylg '22 TATOCT. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $5,031.
Charlie Appleby representative KALIDASA (GB) (Frankel {GB}) hit the heights at last year's Tattersalls October Book 1 fixture when knocked down to Godolphin for 2.8-million guineas. The March-foaled bay is out of dual stakes-winning G1 Prix de l'Opera third So Mi Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), herself a full-sister to MG1SW sire Too Darn Hot (GB) and multiple Group 1-placed distaffer Lah Ti Dar (GB). His 10 rivals include Lordship Stud's John and Thady Gosden trainee Fighter Command (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who is out of a stakes-winning full-sister to G1 Derby hero Serpentine (Ire).

17.30 Kempton, £6,800, Nov, 2yo, 8f (AWT)
Godolphin newcomer EL CORDOBES (IRE) (Frankel {GB}), who fetched a whopping 2-million guineas at last year's Tattersalls October Book 1 sale, is out of a half-sister to G1 Haydock Sprint Cup heroine Tante Rose (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}). Opposition to the Charlie Appleby-conditioned debutant includes Marc Chan's Sardinian Warrior (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), who is a son of G1 Phoenix S. and G1 Matron S. heroine La Collina (Ire) (Strategic Prince {GB}), from the John and Thady Gosden stable.

13.00 Lingfield, £6,600, Nov, 2yo, f, 8f 1y (AWT)
George Strawbridge's homebred FRIENDLY SOUL (GB) (Kingman {GB}), a John and Thady Gosden trainee, is kin to six black-type perfomers headed by elite-level winners We Are (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), With You (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and Call The Wind (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Opponents include her once-raced stablemate Twin Peaks (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is a full-sister to G1 Oaks and G1 Prix de Royallieu heroine Anapurna (GB).

12.30 Lingfield, £6,600, Nov, 2yo, f, 8f 1y (AWT)
Qatar Racing's hitherto unraced KALEIDOSCOPE (GB) (Kingman {GB}) is a half-sister to G3 Athasi S. winner Lightening Quick (GB) (Frankel {GB}) out of G1 Cheveley Park S. victrix Lightening Pearl (Ire) (Marju {Ire}). The John and Thady Gosden representative encounters nine contenders in this unveiling.

HOW THEY FARED
18.30 Wolverhampton, £9,950, Mdn, 2yo, 7f 36y (AWT)
Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum's Robeena (GB) (Calyx {GB}), a Roger Varian-trained half-sister to last year's GI Belmont Oaks Invitational heroine McKulick (GB) (Frankel {GB}), ran on well from off the pace to finish 5 3/4 lengths behind the winner in third.

NEWMARKET, UK–Whether up top or down below, the consignors at Park Paddocks all agree that the major redevelopment work that has been carried out by Tattersalls over the last few years has been a huge boost.

The extended yards of R, S and T in the Somerville Paddock seem to have almost doubled in size during the levelling-up process, with extra rubber runways making the business of showing and viewing horses that bit easier.

Gerry Meehan, the yearling manager of Blue Diamond Stud, is delighted with the position for his quartet of yearlings, describing the renovation as a “game-changer”.

He says, “Even though the yard is only a metre wider all round, it seems massive compared to how it used to be.”

Imad Al Sagar's Blue Diamond Stud is selling four colts by big-name stallions in Dubawi (Ire), Kingman (GB), Lope De Vega (Ire) and Sea The Stars (Ire), and on paper, at least, it is hard to look past the Dubawi half-brother to the treble Group 1 winner Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

“He is what it says on the tin,” says Meehan of lot 35. “He's a star: he looks a star and he does everything like a star. He'a a proper horse and he shows off when he comes out here.”

He adds, “They are four very nice horses; we're very lucky.”

Down at Solario yard EE, which was revamped impressively last year, there's a strong French flavour, with La Motteraye Consignment making a rare reappearance at Tattersalls and stabled just around the corner from Michel Zerolo's European Sales Management draft.

Gwen Monneraye, who runs the Normandy-based La Motteraye operation with his partner Lucie Lamotte, is on hand with a pair of Book 1 yearlings, including a filly by Night Of Thunder (Ire) from the family of The Wow Signal (Ire) [lot 495]. The consignors have 39 yearlings being prepared for the October Yearling Sale at Arqana, which is naturally much closer to home for them, but Monneraye admits to a touch of FOMO necessitating a return to Tattersalls after a four-year absence.

“In French we have a saying 'Les absents ont toujours tort', which roughly translates to 'if you're not there you are missing out on something',” he says.

“We sell for ourselves but we also sell for lots of clients and it's nice to provide the options for them. When you want to sell in France and in England, you have to be very well organised, and we don't do anything unless we are well organised. We are building a bigger barn to make it more practical for us to come here more often, so I think in two years' time we will have a bigger draft.”

Monneraye adds, “The horses travelled over really well, so we were able to show as early as Friday afternoon, which I didn't expect, but all through the weekend we have seen a lot of people. We have another four for next week so it's going to be a full month of sales.”

Making their Book 1 debut is Natalie Folland and Matt Bowen, who consign from Fonthill Stud in Wiltshire as Folland-Bowen Bloodstock and offer a son of Showcasing (GB) as lot 63 on behalf of breeder Jane Keir. The colt, from a well-established and successful international family, enjoyed a good update since the publication of the catalogue when his half-brother Flight Plan (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) won the G2 Dullingham Park S. for Steve Parkin's Clipper Logistics on Irish Champions weekend.

“The update came just at the right time. We're still pinching ourselves,” says Keir.

“Liam Norris found his dam Romp for me and said, 'Jane, this mare probably won't be to everyone's taste but she's worth looking at.' She was on the end of the row and she ended up costing 14,000gns.

“She's a Pivotal mare with Singspiel as her broodmare sire too, and [Breeders' Cup Turf winner] Rebel's Romance is in the family as well, so hopefully it's building.”

Romp, who wasn't covered this year, now has a Pintaubo filly foal at foot, and she resides at Lord Margadale's Fonthill Stud, which is leased by Folland and Bowen. Keir herself was the former owner of Elkington Stud, which was managed by Folland until its sale a few years ago.

Keir adds, “There was no question that the mares would go with Nat. They are treated like royalty there.”

While Keir admits that Flight Plan's sire Night Of Thunder is now at the top of her list for Romp next year, it is another Darley-based son of Dubawi, Too Darn Hot (GB), that has brought an extra large smile to the face of Watership Down Stud's Simon Marsh this season. It is with good reason, too, as not only was Too Darn Hot bred at Watership Down Stud by Lord and Lady Lloyd Webber, but they retained a significant share in him when he retired to Dalham Hall Stud. With his first crop of juvenile runners, the stallion from Watership Down's signature family of Darara (Ire) now has four group winners to his name, including the G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Fallen Angel (GB).

“He was always a horse that one would have thought that his 2-year-olds would be later types, and since August he has done exceptionally well. His pedigree is really full of later-maturing horses, like Dar Re Mi and So Mi Dar, and then Darara and Darshaan. Everything he's doing at the moment is really a bonus and we hope that next year his 3-year-olds will really develop and do even better,” Marsh says.

“It's fantastic to have bred a horse who could become a significant influence, and for us to have ended up owning half of him is extraordinary. We have a couple by him to sell this week, including a filly who is interestingly inbred 3×3 to Darara [lot 259].”

With Too Darn Hot's sire Dubawi, the reigning champion, still in full flow and responsible for 19 of the yearlings in Book 1, it is fair to expect to see him feature prominently on the leaderboard at Tattersalls this week, especially with Sheikh Mohammed in attendance. On Monday afternoon, the ruler of Dubai was patrolling the sales grounds, inspecting yearlings with his principal trainer Charlie Appleby, and the Godolphin buying team of Anthony Stroud and David Loder.

The sheikh is far from the only major player in town, however. His niece Sheikha Hissa was also spotted alongside Shadwell's Racing Manager Angus Gold, while owners and breeders from as far afield as Australia, America and Japan have also made the bloodstock pilgrimage to Newmarket. There seems little doubt that the next three days will bring with them yet more staggering trade for a very special bunch of yearlings.

STARTUP MENTALITY (IRE) (f, 3, Kingman {GB}–Fine Time {GB}, by Dansili {GB}), sourced by Chad Brown and owner Klaravich Stables for 300,000gns ($428,654) out of Book 1 at the 2021 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, was the only first-time starter taking on a field of more experienced maidens to open the Haskell S. day card at Monmouth Saturday. Named the 2-1 third choice, the filly broke from the far outside gate and was content to let the rest of the field go in front of her up the backstretch through an opening half in :46.97 before making a sweeping four-wide move around the far turn. Caught the widest of the bunch, Startup Mentality had plenty of momentum with a furlong to run, eagerly ran down late leader Mirabella (Into Mischief), and gained separation to the line to graduate by 1 1/2 lengths. The second straight winner from her dam, Startup Mentality is out of a full-sister to G1SW Passage of Time (GB) and a half to GSW/MGISP Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and G1SW Timepiece (GB) (Zamindar). This is also the family of European champion older horse Twice Over (GB) (Observatory) and GI Matriarch S. winner Viadera (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}). Fine Time has a 2-year-old Lope de Vega (Ire) filly and a yearling filly by Night of Thunder (Ire). Sales History: 300,000gns Ylg '21 TATOCT. Of the 10 yearlings to make 1 million guineas, the filly by Galileo out of Group 1 producer Shastye (Ire) (Danehill) took top honours at 3,400,000gns.

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “The catalogue for Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale looks another vintage edition with an impressive number of yearlings closely related to outstanding racehorses of recent years.

“October Book 1 purchases have enjoyed a remarkable 2021 on the racecourse with the world's highest rated horse, St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), leading the way alongside the world's highest rated miler Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}), the Irish Derby and Grand Prix de Paris winner Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) as well as Domestic Spending (GB) (Kingman {GB}), the highest rated turf horse in North America.

“All 502 yearlings are eligible for the enormously popular £20,000 October Book 1 Bonus which has paid out more than £6,000,000 in bonuses to the 243 winners over the past six years and will again ensure that buyers have the chance to win unprecedented prize money by purchasing at Europe's premier yearling sale.”

'TDN Rising Star' Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}) entered Saturday's Listed Chesham S. with a substantial reputation from Ballydoyle and while it was hard work in Ascot's slow ground he duly delivered as the 10-11 favourite. Held on to this time unlike when successful by 5 1/2 lengths over this seven-furlong trip on yielding ground at The Curragh June 2, the full-brother to Broome (Ire) edged ahead with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and despite veering left denied The Queen's Reach For the Moon (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) by half a length in a thrilling finale. Amo Racing's Great Max (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) was third, 3 1/4 lengths away. “He's from a good family and is still green and learning,” Ryan Moore said. “They are very attritional conditions and he's doing this on pure class at the moment. He handles that ground, but he doesn't need it.”

This was a fascinating renewal with some well-regarded colts in attendance and with Reach For the Moon taken towards the far side along with Masekela (Ire) (El Kabeir), it was the Charlie Appleby trainee New Science (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and the Archie Watson-trained Sweeping (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) who Moore opted to track on the favourite. Keen under restraint for the first time, the blaze-faced bay travelled into contention smoothly approaching the final two furlongs but the Royal runner was not stopping under Frankie Dettori and it was soon clear that Point Lonsdale would have to graft to subdue him. While Reach For the Moon lugged right, the winner was going the other way but he was notably game in the closing stages to cling on. This seven-furlong contest is unique, being restricted to sons and daughters of either a sire or dam who won over at least 10 furlongs, and Aidan O'Brien was keen to stress the uniqueness of the winner afterwards.

Of his previous five Chesham scorers, Churchill (Ire) was the most notable in 2016 and the master of Ballydoyle who was registering a 76th Royal winner is thinking of the same route for Point Lonsdale. “He can go back for races like the [G3] Tyros [at Leopardstown July 22], the [G2] Futurity [at The Curragh Aug. 21], the [G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien] National Stakes [at The Curragh Sept. 12] and the [G1] Dewhurst [at Newmarket Oct. 9] and all those sort of races like Churchill,” he said. “He's very brave and is full of that Galileo in that his head goes down and out. He didn't learn too much the first time and so it was nice he got a little bit of a lead today. The first and second pulled clear, so I'd day they are two good colts.”

“He's very smart and it's unusual for a horse bred to be a middle-distance horse to be out so early and be so forward,” O'Brien added. “For an Australia, he always had a lot of speed and was very natural from early on. He's still a bit of a baby, but everyone always thought a lot of him and he's really genuine. When you ask him, he digs very deep and we'd hope he'll be a classy horse, a Guineas and Derby-type horse. We were worried about the ground a little. Broome bends his knee a little bit, but this horse doesn't and is a low, slick mover. None of those horses in that race would have encountered ground like that before.”

Thady Gosden said of Reach For the Moon, who had a special audience on Saturday with his owner-breeder present. “It was a great run and we're really happy with him. That was only his second career run, he is still very inexperienced. I think Reach For the Moon and the winner Point Lonsdale got lonely in front, but they both ran on well and look two nice prospects. Obviously our lad handled the ground, but he would also prefer better ground in the future–he is one to look forward to.”

Point Lonsdale's aforementioned full-brother was unable to provide the dam Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) with a black-type double in the G2 Hardwicke S., but he has done plenty for her already by winning four times in pattern company–including this year's G2 Mooresbridge S.–and finishing runner-up in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup. Sweepstake, who took the Listed National S. and was runner-up in the GIII Appalachian S., is a daughter of Dust Flicker (GB) (Suave Dancer) who is a full-sister to the G3 Prix de la Nonette winner Dust Dancer (GB). She is in turn the second dam of the G1 Phoenix S.-winning sire Zoffany (Ire) and the G3 Bengough S. winner Projection (GB), who shares Acclamation (GB) as a sire with Sweepstake.

Dust Flicker is also kin to the G3 Fred Darling S. winner Bulaxie (GB) (Bustino {GB}), dam of the G2 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Claxon (GB) (Caerleon) whose daughter Cassydora (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) took the GIII Hillsborough S. and was runner-up in the G1 Nassau S. Her three black-type winners include this stable's triple group 3 scorer Ernest Hemingway (Ire) by Australia's sire Galileo and the G3 Prix d'Aumale winner Toulifaut (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Sweepstake also has a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire).

It is not an easy year to be making a Book 1 debut but it is an occasion that Matthieu and Solenn Gouesnard of Haras d’Ombreville have been looking forward to, despite the extra complications of the coronavirus situation.

The couple launched their farm in the Pays d’Auge region of France in 2012 after Mathieu had completed stints in Ireland with Ballylinch Stud and as manager of Haras de Meautry. The following year saw their first draft at Arqana and it wasn’t long before Ombreville was associated with a top-class name as, in 2014, they sold subsequent Hong Kong dual Group 1 winner Pakistan Star (Ger) (Shamardal) to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for €180,000 at the August Sale.

“We have been thinking about coming to Newmarket for a couple of years and this year we had a really good crop of yearlings bred on the farm,” says Matthieu Gouesnard. “Regarding the Covid situation, I felt it was important to split the drafts, so we had some in Arqana September, we have some here in Book 1 and Book 2, and we have kept a few nice yearlings for Part I in October at Arqana.”

He adds, “We are going to Book 1 with four yearlings who are well bred and by proven sires—we have one Sea The Stars (Ire) filly, a Lope De Vega (Ire) colt and two Siyouni (Fr) fillies.”

The prowess of Siyouni was given an extra boost on Sunday in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe by his high-flying son Sottsass (Fr), while Siyouni’s top daughters include the Classic winners Laurens (Fr) and Ervedya (Fr).

The first of the Ombreville draft to be offered on Tuesday is lot 140, bred by Raschit Shaykhutdinov, the Siyouni filly from the deep German family of Elle Danzig (Ger)

“She’s out of one of the best German families,” says Gouesnard. “Elle Danzig was a brilliant racehorse first but she became a really good producer and 12 of her foals are winners and seven of those have black type, including the dam of this filly, Elle Same (GB). I know this family well because Elle Danzig was bred by Gestut Wittekindshof and we have had a few of her daughters at the stud. German clients make up about 70-80% of our client list.”

The Newmarket consigning venture follows on from Ombreville testing the water for the first time last year in Baden-Baden, a move which was a natural step in order to cater for the high number of German breeders on their books.

“We opened the farm in 2012 and since the beginning we had very few French clients. We focused on German breeders who were keen to breed in France for the premiums and it really started with Gestut Wittenkindshof. The former manager Karl Jorg gave us support from when we first opened the doors and we sold Pakistan Star for them in Arqana. Karl is well respected by other German breeders and we got some clients because they knew Karl was working with us. So he was a fantastic advert for us in Germany and afterwards we were sent mares by Ammerland, Fahrhof, Schlenderhan, Brummerhof—most of the big German breeders.”

Ombreville’s second Siyouni filly, offered on behalf of the same breeder, comes up early on the second day of Book 1 (lot 181) and also has German roots. Her listed-placed dam Global Magic (Ger) is a daughter of the Japan Cup winner Lando (Ger) and is a half-sister to seven black-type performers from a family which includes multiple Group 1 winners Fame And Glory (GB) and Farhh (GB).

Following her as lot 252 is the Sea The Stars filly out of the listed winner Komische (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) from the family of Classic winners Brian Boru (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) and Workforce (GB) (King’s Best), and completing the draft is the sole colt, lot 301, who is the first foal of listed winner Megera (Fr) (Motivator {GB}).

Next week, Ombreville will also offer two fillies at Book 2, including a first for Tattersalls—a yearling by Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist (lot 745).

Gouesnard says, “The mare was in America and our client decided to bring her back to Europe so she came back in foal to Nyquist. We thought this would be the perfect place to sell her in Tattersalls.”
