Michael O'Callaghan trainee Kairyu (Ire) (Kuroshio {Aus}–Vegatina {GB}, by Lope De Vega {Ire}) was the clear-cut winner of a five-furlong Naas maiden last month and franked the promise of that debut score with an upset win upped in trip for Saturday's G3 Jebel Ali Racecourse And Stables Anglesey S. at the Curragh.

Kairyu employed patient tactics from flagfall and lobbed along off the pace in sixth through the early fractions. Making smooth headway once past halfway, the 4-1 chance quickened beyond rivals to seize control approaching the final furlong and was driven out in the closing stages to hold the late threat of 10-11 favourite Pearls And Rubies (No Nay Never) by 1 1/4 lengths.

“She looks very smart, Colin [Keane] said she doesn't want that [soft] ground and she was just good and tough,” said trainer Michael O'Callaghan. “The gaps appeared a little bit before Colin wanted them, but she has a savage turn of foot where she can go and put a race to bed. She relaxes so well that she'll probably get seven furlongs in time. I was thinking about going to the [G2] Duchess Of Cambridge at Newmarket last week, but I wasn't happy with her work so we waited another week. Colin thinks she'll be better on better ground and she'll probably go for something like the [G2] Lowther [at York] now. She's still a little bit high behind and she's going to grow plenty, so she could potentially be a very nice filly.”

Pedigree Notes
Kairyu becomes the fourth pattern-race winner for her sire (by Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and is the only reported foal produced by Vegatina (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), herself a granddaughter of Listed Prix Isola Bella third Vassiana (Fr) (Anabaa). Vassiana is the dam of G3 Phoenix Sprint S. victrix Girouette (Ire) (Pivital {GB}), herself the second dam of G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S.-winning sire Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never). Vassiana, who is also a full-sister to G3 Prix d'Arenberg winner Villadolide (Fr) and Listed Prix Hampton scorer Victorieux (Fr), is from the immediate family of G1 Prix de Diane heroine Mrs. Penny (Great Nephew {GB}).

Michael O'Callaghan is eyeing big-race riches in Dubai with half-brothers I Am Superman (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) and Fastnet Crown (Ire) (Hallowed Crown {Aus}) before making the move to a new purpose-built yard near the Curragh ahead of the turf season proper.

However, the leading Irish trainer has said that he remains in the dark over his position with Amo Racing despite sending out Crypto Force (GB) (Time Test {GB}) to secure G2 Beresford S. glory for Kia Joorabchian's major ownership vehicle at the Curragh last season.

Crypto Force joined the stable of John and Thady Gosden shortly after that triumph and O'Callaghan revealed that none of Amo Racing's horses, including Olivia Maralda (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), Crispy Cat (GB) (Ardad {Ire}) and Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), have returned to his yard for the new season.

He explained, “They haven't arrived back yet. I'm not sure what the plans are with Amo. There was chat about Indestructible coming back but, with the way they move the balls around over the winter, I'll know more in the next few weeks.”

I Am Superman, who O'Callaghan sourced as a yearling and retains a share of, showed a high level of form for the trainer initially on home soil before being moved to Australia in search of better prize-money.

Now in his second stint with O'Callaghan after returning home from Peter and Paul Snowden's, I Am Superman will be targeted at top-level races in Dubai and is reported to have settled in nicely at Meydan along with his stablemate and half-brother Fastnet Crown.

O'Callaghan said, “I bought I Am Superman as a yearling. He won three races for us and ran well in the 2019 Irish 2,000 Guineas. I actually had him sold to Hong Kong later that year but he failed the vet for something obscure on an x-ray so we decided to keep him.

“We brought him to Australia for the prize-money and decided to leave him out there with Peter and Paul Snowden. He'd been there for roughly two years where he racked up about a quarter of a million dollars in prize-money.

“To be fair to the Snowdens, they felt they never really got the rub of the green with him either because, every time they felt they had him ready, the ground went against him. He was only beaten a short head in a Group 1 on his latest start out there and is from a family who progress a lot with age. I wanted to get a bit of mileage out of him myself before his form tapered off, which is why we got him back and are now aiming him at the big prize-money in Dubai.”

He added, “He's in great form. He got a break in Australia after his last run there. When he came back here, it was just a case of building him back up for Dubai. He's been to Dundalk for a racecourse gallop and he's ready to go. His first run will be in the Zabeel Mile and his main target will be the G1 Jebel Hatta on March 4. He may have a run in between but we'll get the Zabeel Mile out of the way first. If he got an invite for Dubai World Cup Night, we'd have to consider that as well.”

“Fastnet Crown is on the up and I've been wanting to step him up in trip for a while. He won his prep race at Dundalk last week and will start out over a-mile-and-a-furlong on Friday 13 and we'll take it from there. Both horses travelled over there well and they are in great form.”

Fastnet Crown will run in the colours of his owner-breeder Michael Smith, whose Fastnet Lady (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) is fast becoming a prolific broodmare.

O'Callaghan said, “The two of them are out of Fastnet Lady, who Michael also bred. I bought I Am Superman off him and we got to know each other from there. He sent me Fastnet Crown, the half-brother, and we've a full-brother to I Am Superman here as well. The mare has been very lucky for him with her first two foals, I Am Superman rated 114 and Fastnet Crown rated 106, so she's a good mare and I understand that she's now in foal to Australia (GB). Michael has been to Royal Ascot, had a winner on Derby day at the Curragh and he's coming to Dubai as well. He's loving it and I'm delighted because he's a lovely man.”

Domestically, O'Callaghan has high hopes for Gozen (Ire) (Kuroshio {Aus}). A winner on debut at Punchestown last September, Gozen was possibly a shade unlucky not to win the G3 Staffordstown S. at the Curragh when forced to race wide. O'Callaghan has Classic aspirations for the filly who failed to sell at the breeze-ups.

He said, “Gozen's first intended target will be the Irish 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown over a mile, which we won with Now Or Never (Ire) (Bushranger {Ire}). She's done very well over the winter and, I know it's a cliche but, everything she did last year, she'll improve on it because she's a big, raw filly. She's filled out very well over the winter so I'm really looking forward to her.”

Recalling how Gozen fell through the cracks at the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-up Sale last year, O'Callaghan added, “To be fair to Eddie Ahern, who consigned her, he always felt she'd need time but he really liked her. He just let her do a nice canter in the breeze and, for people watching on, it probably left more questions than answers. I remember seeing her and I wrote in my catalogue, 'lovely action but she only cantered; is there an issue?'

“Funnily enough, Michael Shefflin, who is involved with Eddie, rang me a few weeks later to ask if I would have any interest in taking her for a month to try her out. He told me that, if I liked her, I could buy her privately. That's how it all happened.”

Asked if he was tempted to sell Gozen at any stage last season, O'Callaghan said, “There was plenty of interest after she finished second in the Group 3. Her form stacks up very well and you could even say that she was a little unlucky at the Curragh not to win. She will improve for strengthening up and I'd imagine the mile will be her minimum this season. She has a lot of natural speed.”

Seven of O'Callaghan's 15 winners in Ireland last year were recorded with two-year-olds. The figure was 13 from 17 in 2021. Few operators concentrate as heavily on juveniles as O'Callaghan and he has high hopes for the next crop coming through at his new base in Brannoxstown near the Curragh.

He said, “We have a lovely Inns Of Court (Ire) filly-a lovely shape of a filly. She's actually a homebred. I also have a nice Mehmas (Ire) colt and a nice Sioux Nation filly. They look to be nice two-year-old types and I like them. They've done plenty and were all broken in August. “They cantered away and have built their way up as much as they were able for. They'd have quickened up a couple of furlongs just before Christmas before getting a little break and starting back on Monday morning.”

He added, “We'll be fully moved into the new yard by the end of January. It's been a slow process between buying the site, getting planning permission and then the building. The gallops are fully finished over two months now so they will be nicely settled by the time they have horses on them, which is good. We've built the place from scratch and are looking forward to getting going there fully this season.”

There was so much focus on The Queen's Reach For the Moon (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in the build-up to Thursday's G3 Hampton Court S., it had almost assumed the air of a foregone conclusion but in the final analysis the Royal runner was second-best to the G3 Craven S. runner-up Claymore (Fr) (New Bay {GB}). With Frankie's day about to get even worse, Adam Kirby set off in front on Mary Slack's 7-1 second favourite and refused to let the Gosden runner past when it came down to a straight fight in the final two furlongs. At the line, there was a 1 3/4-length margin back to the 2-5 favourite, who looked not to see out the 10-furlong trip, with Kingmax (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) a length behind in third.

Claymore, who had impressed with an emphatic debut win over seven at Newmarket in October in which My Prospero (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) was third, had returned with a second to Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the Craven which continues to grow in stature with each passing week. The third Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}) is now a well-known name following his Derby second, Kingmax was in fourth, the fifth-placed Star of India (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) took the Listed Dee S. and the one who was last of the six was Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) who went so close in Wednesday's G2 Queen's Vase here. For all the promise of his performance in that Newmarket contest, it seemed to be undone by Claymore's rank display from a coffin-box draw in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains at ParisLongchamp May 15 so it was a relief that he was able to pull it all together again.

Trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam is now on two winners for the week, which in terms of string size is nothing short of a remarkable tally. She said, “Claymore is in his comfort zone when he is up there bowling along in front. He has got a huge stride. Stepping up to 10 furlongs has helped him. It is lovely that Mary Slack has come over from South Africa for today and he will be able to stand at one of her studs. There is no plan at the moment. Wherever Mary wants to go, I'll send him.” The owner added, “We thought he would run well in the French Guineas, but he was hopeless from a terrible draw. This was the return. I have never been to these heights before.”

John Gosden suggested that a drop in trip could be next for Reach For the Moon. “The mother was very, very fast, so perhaps we've run him beyond his trip,” he commented. “I'm not sure he quite stayed it out, but we'll see–it could well be a possibility. He's never run over that trip before. He ran a great race first time back in the Heron Stakes and My Prospero franked the form in the St James's Palace, so we may well be dealing with a horse who only stays a stiff mile. I don't know.”

Claymore is out of the unraced Brit Wit (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}), who is a daughter of the Listed Harvest S. winner and G2 Park Hill S.-placed Brisk Breeze (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}). The third dam Bela-M (Ire) (Ela-Mana-Mou {Ire}) took the Listed Nereide-Rennen and was third in the G3 Prix Fille de l'Air. The dam's unraced 2-year-old filly Uniqa (Fr) (Cloth of Stars {Ire}) is followed by a yearling filly by Amaron (GB) named Baroness von Aesch (Ger) and a filly foal by Areion (Ger).

Sunday's William Hill Ireland Play Responsibly Irish EBF Maiden over seven furlongs at The Curragh looked deep on paper and a deeply impressive display it produced, with John Lavery's 2-year-old colt New Energy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), a £65,000 Goresbridge breeze-up graduate, attaining 'TDN Rising Star' status in exciting fashion. The eventual winner, 'fifth' and 'first' in recent Dundalk barrier trials, was not without support at 11-1 odds and made a slick getaway to hold sway under a firm hold from flagfall. Hard on the steel with all rivals under pressure passing the two pole, he was allowed an inch of rein by Robbie Colgan entering the final furlong and powered clear in style to outpoint Sir Antonino (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by 2 1/2 lengths. Paris Lights (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), a full-brother to five-time Group 1 winner St Mark's Basilica (Fr), shaped with promise and ran on well in the closing stages to finish fifth.

“I really have to thank Gary Halpin, who gave this horse a big recommendation,” said trainer Sheila Lavery. “He didn't put the gun to his head at the Breeze-Ups because he was suffering a little bit from sore shins. I left him in today, but I was praying for rain just to ease the ground a bit. I thought so much of him that he had an entry in the [G2] Beresford, but I didn't want his first run to be at that level and have a hard race. He has a [G1 Irish 2000] Guineas entry and I think he's something very special. He has a very natural high cruising speed and ran twice in barrier trails. He was very green the first time, when I didn't put a cross noseband on him, and he won the second time. I would love to run him in a winners-of-one, but those sort of races are really missing from the programme. He could go for something like the [G3] Killavullan S. at Leopardstown.”

New Energy is the seventh of eight foals and becomes the fifth scorer produced by For Joy (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}), whose leading performer to date is G3 Premio Elena E Sergio Cumani victrix Victoria Regina (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}). For Joy, who has a yearling colt by Profitable (Ire) to come, is a winning full-sister to G3 Autumn S. victor Abjer (Fr) and G3 Henry II S. victrix Gloomy Sunday (Ire). The winner's second dam, Listed Prix Scaramouche winner Fine and Mellow (Fr) (Lando {Ger}), is one of four black-type winners bred from the Belgian champion and Listed Belgian St Leger heroine Mika Red (Bel) (Red Steps). Descendants of the latter include Listed Belgian 1000 Guineas-winning duo Mika Gallery (Ire) (Tate Gallery) and Baie des Anges (Bel) (Pas de Seul {GB}). For Joy's Profitable yearling is catalogued as Lot 566 in next month's Tattersalls October Book 2.

Hootenanny (Quality Road) became the latest freshman sire off the mark when the Kevin Ryan-trained Louisiana-bred filly Esken Rose shed maiden status on debut in Thursday's Northern Commercials Service, Sales & Parts Novice S. at Pontefract. The $4,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling and £38,000 Goresbridge@Newmarket breezer, who sported the colours of Hambleton Racing, made all to defeat Clarets Glory (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}) by a length.

1st-Pontefract, £7,200, Nov, 9-16, 2yo, 6fT, 1:16.39, g/f.
ESKEN ROSE (f, 2, Hootenanny–Eskenforandreya, by Eskendereya) was the sharpest of nine into stride and seized an immediate lead in this debut. Holding sway throughout, the 14-1 chance turned for home with a comfortable buffer and kept on strongly under a final-furlong drive to hold the late bid of Clarets Glory (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}) by a length, becoming the first winner for her freshman sire (by Quality Road). Esken Rose is the lone foal produced by a winning full-sister to dual stakes scorer He's The Reason (The Factor) and stakes-winning GIII Ohio Derby and GIII Palm Beach S. placegetter South Bend (Algorithms). The April-foaled bay's MGSP second dam Sandra's Rose (Old Trieste) is a half-sister to three black-type winners headed by GII American Derby hero and GI Hollywood Derby runner-up Mananan McLir (Royal Academy).

The record-breaking top lot at last week's Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-up Sale has been returned by the purchaser and has subsequently been bought privately by Kia Joorabchian's Amo Racing.

The Dark Angel (Ire) colt out of Venturous Spirit (Fr) (Arch) had been bought as a yearling at the Arqana October Sale for €6,000 by Jerry Horan and Katharina Irmer and was knocked down in the ring last Thursday at £410,000. The colt was initially bought by Richard Brown for an undisclosed client. Brown's underbidder Alex Elliott was later contacted by the vendor and agreed a private sale on behalf of Amo Racing.

Elliott said, “Kia is very supportive of young people throughout the industry and he felt very bad for the young guys who had sold him, Kat and Jerry. It's a risk to do what we've done but we think we are potentially getting some value, especially as we absolutely loved the horse at the sale. We felt he was a special colt, he did a really good breeze, and we've had a bit of a reduction since he's been returned. Kia was keen to support the vendors and the horse has gone to George Boughey. We're very excited to have him.”

NEWMARKET, UK—A little later than scheduled, the European 2-year-old sales season will conclude on Thursday with the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-up, which has returned to Newmarket for a second year owing to ongoing Covid travel restrictions.

What was already a bumper catalogue for a one-day sale of more than 200 horses has been beefed up still by the inclusion of 16 wild cards that have been rerouted from other recent sales for a variety of reasons. They include horses with some pretty starry pedigrees, so be prepared for some of the major action to take place late in the day.

Indeed the last three catalogued all have plenty to recommend them on paper. Lot 241 from Mayfield Stables is the American Pharoah colt out of the Irish champion 2-year-old filly Damson (Ire) (Entrepreneur), who has already produced a smart juvenile in the form of G2 Flying Childers S winner Requinto (Ire) (Dansili {GB}).

He will be followed by a son of Kingman (GB), offered by Kilbrew Stables and sold for 300,000gns when he was offered in the same ring as a foal. Lot 242's dam Patsy Boyne (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is a three-parts sister to High Chaparral (Ire) and recent updates to an already lovely page have come in the form of the G1 Prix de Diane victory for Fancy Blue (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), whose dam Chenchikova (Ire) is High Chaparral's full-sister.

Both of the above were withdrawn from last week's Arqana Breeze-up Sale at Doncaster, the latter with a stone bruise, but the final lot through the ring on Friday, 243, was bought back at £150,000. The son of Dark Angel (Ire) is the second foal of the Irish 1000 Guineas winner Jet Setting (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) and is consigned by Star Bloodstock.

Among those in the original line-up for the Goresbridge sale, Folistown Farm's Dandy Man (Ire) colt (lot 51) could be in line for an update come Friday as he is a half-brother to the dam of Mystery Angel (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}), who was supplemented for the Oaks earlier this week by her trainer George Boughey.

Plenty of this season's leading freshman sires are represented, including Galileo Gold (Ire), who sired his first stakes winner, Ebro River (Ire), last Thursday. That colt was bred by Tally-Ho Stud, which stands Galileo Gold, and offers one of his juveniles for sale at the breeze (lot 44), as well as four by his fellow freshman Cotai Glory (GB) and four by leading second-season sire Mehmas (Ire), himself a former breeze-up graduate.

Hyde Park Stud features early with lot 4, an Invincible Spirit (Ire) first foal of the Frankel (GB) mare Elphin (GB). The colt's dam hails from the Juddmonte family that includes Mandaloun (Into Mischief) who could yet be named as this year's winner of the Kentucky Derby following confirmation on Wednesday that the B-sample taken from Medina Spirit (Protonico) has also tested positive for the prohibited corticosteroid betamethasone.

Ardglas Stables has a draft of five juveniles for the final sale of the year, including the sole breezer by Claiborne Farm's Blame in the catalogue. Offered as lot 162, she is a half-sister to the American listed winner Touch Magic (Lion Heart) and five other winners, and is from a family which includes GI Hopeful S winner Sky Mesa.

Mary Reynolds, who runs Ardglas Stables with Ambrose O'Mullane, noted that she was pleased by the level of activity on the sales grounds at Park Paddocks over the last few days.

“I'm getting a good vibe about the sale and we've been very busy,” she said. “We've an Oasis Dream (GB), an Aclaim (Ire) colt, and fillies by Acclamation (GB) and Blame, and they have all been very busy. We couldn't have been happier with the job they've done on the ground for the breeze this morning. We know Newmarket inside out by now.”

Reynolds added, “We've more expense added to it by travelling them over from Ireland, which wasn't easy with the way things are, but the simple fact is that the sale has moved to the UK because nobody can travel to Ireland.

“I'm sure ITM and Tattersalls Ireland are all doing their bit in trying to bring people in for the sale. We've had a long winter, myself and Ambrose, we did all of the horses ourselves with no help, so it will be great to have a little break after this before we get going again with the yearlings.”

The catalogue also features 11 fillies who are eligible for the Great British Bonus Scheme, which celebrated its first anniversary this week and has thus far paid out just shy of £2.5 million in bonuses for Flat and National Hunt fillies and mares.

One of the scheme's multiple winners this season is the George Boughey-trained Beautiful Sunshine (GB), a daughter of the prolific first-season sire Ardad (Ire) who was withdrawn from the Tattersalls Craven Sale. Her two wins have netted £40,000, the majority of which is paid to her owner Amo Racing. Bred by Jocelyn Targett, Beautiful Sunshine is now on course for a step into stakes company at Royal Ascot.

The Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-up Sale gets underway in Newmarket at 10.30am.
