Kayf Tara (GB) may be gone, but his exploits are certainly not forgotten and late in the day at the Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale his three-year-old son consigned by Timmy Hillman's Castledillon Stud brought the hammer down at €265,000. Becoming the highest-priced store horse of the year, the the full-brother to the winning point-to-pointer Romeo Coolio (GB) was bought by Eddie O'Leary and Gordon Elliott.

Hillman, who topped the Derby Sale for this first time, said of lot 397, “We bought him privately off Will Kinsey and it was through Covid so it is all due to him. He was a smasher at the time. He has done nothing wrong at all and let's hope he is lucky for his new owners.”

Haras du Mesnil's Doctor Dino (Fr) is a stallion with an increasingly lofty reputation among the National Hunt ranks, and he provided not only the second-top lot of the concluding day but four of the top ten lots across the whole sale.

Johnny Collins of Brown Island Stables pulled off a major touch when selling the three-year-old gelding (lot 249) out of Countess Comet (Ire) (Medicean {GB}) to Ian Ferguson for €240,000. Collins had only had the relation to Group 2-winning stayer Air Pilot (GB) (Zamindar) in his care for five months, having bought him at the Goffs UK January Sale from Mill Farm Stud for £58,000.

“There was no imagination when I bought him, it was only a matter of keeping him for a few months, he was a lovely three-year-old then,” he said. “I bought him to come here, I was wanting something by this stallion. I had been trying to buy one by him in France and I could not get them.”

Collins added, “This gelding is by an amazing sire and is an incredible mover. He is the same horse in January as he is now – he came from a good farm and was well prepped, I was just in the right place at the right time.”

Collins also bought the Nathaniel yearling-half-brother to the Doctor Dino gelding in January for £20,000. On Thursday at the Derby Sale, his Brown Island Stables was responsible for another of the top lots, a daughter of the rising French sire Beaumec de Houelle (Fr), who stands at Haras de Montaigu. The grey filly (lot 226) is already named Kisuton Enki (Fr) and was bought by Bobby O'Ryan for €160,000.

Britain's champion jumps trainer Paul Nicholls snapped up two of the day's more expensive lots with bloodstock agent Tom Malone. The pair went to €165,000 for lot 269, a three-year-old Authorized (Ire) gelding out of a winning full-sister to the dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Al Boom Photo (Fr) (Buck's Boum {Fr}) from Ballincurrig House Stud.

A fall in clearance rate to 81% from a stellar 93% last year also led to reductions in other sectors. Twenty-one fewer horses sold this year brought the aggregate down to €16,075,000 (-14%), with the average of €53,583 down by 7% and the median also dropping by 14% to €43,000.

A last-minute change of local Covid regulations in Ireland has led to British buyers already in the country for the Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale being unable to attend the sales complex at Fairyhouse.

The company's major sale of National Hunt store horses gets underway at 11am on Wednesday and continues through Thursday, but those who had already travelled across the Irish Sea under strict protocols which included a 'bubble' for visitors from Britain, can no longer participate in person.

Bloodstock agent Tom Malone vented his frustration on social media on Tuesday evening upon hearing the news, having already spent two days viewing the young jumping stock on the sales grounds.

He told TDN on Wednesday morning, “First of all, Tatts have done everything within their power to make sure that it goes ahead but unfortunately they are dealing with local authorities and, at the last minute, which was yesterday afternoon, they said that the English bubble does now not apply at the sales complex and if it goes ahead they would cancel everything. None of us would do that to anyone else. We are all in this industry together and we just have to work on and get it done.”

Malone said that he will now be following the sale online and liaising with Mags O'Toole on the ground at Fairyhouse. He continued, “It's frustrating. I've done all my work so it's not the end of the world for me because I have seen everything I want. But my business runs on being active on the ground, and if I am not on the ground I am definitely going to be 50% less active, because when I'm there I'll buy.

“The people who have done this don't realise the ramifications of what they have done but unfortunately it can't be changed now, and what it means for the sales coming up I don't know.”

Around 100 people had travelled from Britain to attend the sale and have been staying together in a hotel under the bubble arrangement which allows for travel between the sales ground and the hotel only.

Malone, an Irish-born former jump jockey now resident in the south-west of England added, “You come in clean with a PCR test. I've had a jab and I am doing everything I'm told to do to run my business, but out of Tatts' hands someone is ruining it for us all. But that's just where we find ourselves.

“Niamh Spiller and Mary Lanigan and all their team [at Tattersalls Ireland] have done phenomenal work late into the night making sure everyone was catered for. I feel for them. They've done everything they can.”

The Tattersalls Ireland May Store Sale has been rescheduled for Wednesday, July 14. Tattersalls Ireland has taken this step due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and prevailing travel restrictions. The Tattersalls Ireland Select July Store Sale is slated for Thursday, July 15, and the remaining stores will be put under the hammer at the Tattersalls Ireland August NH Sale on Aug. 10-11. At this time, inspections for the various store sales are almost complete, and the Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale remains as scheduled on June 23-24.

“Naturally our first preference would have been to hold what is normally the first store sale of the year in May but, we do not feel it is prudent to hold a select store sale in May or early June due to ongoing uncertainty and current travel restrictions,” said Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins. “Given that point-to-points are yet to resume, we feel that it is imperative that we allow time for the market to recover and ensure we provide a vibrant marketplace following the Derby Sale.

“We have received positive feedback from a number of vendors on this decision, who have echoed our concerns for the marketplace in May and early June and have welcomed the clarity at this early stage. We have liaised with Goffs on this decision to ensure that any changes to our sales dates are in harmony with their plans.”

Consigned as lot 145, the attractive bay hailed from Castledillon Stud’s draft and was knocked down to Aidan O’Ryan and Gordon Elliott for €195,000. He is from the extended family of the Flat SP Solerina (Ire) (Toulon {GB}), who would become a two-time Grade 1 hurdle winner.

Three other lots made six figures, with a filly by Walk In The Park (Ire) (lot 79) snapped up by Mags O’Toole and Tom Malone for €110,000. The Liss House offering is a half-sister to MG1SW chaser Rogue Angel (Ire) (Presenting {GB}). Authorized (Ire)’s lot 92, a gelding out of Cocopalm (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}) consigned by Moanmore Stables, was acquired by Highflyer Bloodstock for €105,000. Mount Brown Farm’s lot 205, a Flemensfirth gelding, caught the eye of Jim Mangan and changed hands for €100,000.

The aggregate after the first day of the Derby Sale was €4,328,700, with an average of €37,641 for the 115 lots (73%) sold. The median was €30,000. Wednesday’s session will start at 11:30 a.m. local time.

As previously announced, Tattersalls Ireland, HRI, ITM and Goffs submitted protocols to NPHET (National Public Health Emergency Team) to allow overseas purchasers to attend the sales in Ireland. Because of the increased level of new cases, and a concern in relation to the spread of COVID-19, we have been informed that permission to use the protocols to bring in overseas purchasers has not been granted, therefore the current guidelines regarding travel to Ireland will apply for both the Derby Sale and May Store Sale.

Both the Derby Sale and May Store Sale will take place at Fairyhouse as planned and the Tattersalls Ireland team will be available to assist those buyers now unable to attend the sales in any way possible. We will maximize the number of videos available of the stores in the sales, and buyers will be able to participate through the new live internet bidding platform or through telephone bidding via the Tattersalls Ireland team.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=166 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=167 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Commenting on the update Tattersalls Ireland CEO Matt Mitchell said:

“Naturally we are disappointed that our joint submission to government has not been approved, but we fully respect the decision and will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that the Derby and May Store Sales run as smoothly as possible. While the sales will take place under strict protocols, we will be working tirelessly to assist purchasers in any way we can, in particular those who cannot be present due to the travel constraints. We regret not being able to welcome to Fairyhouse our overseas purchasers whose loyalty has being rewarded with purchases that consistently deliver on the track. While the circumstances are difficult, we believe they are not insurmountable and our new live internet bidding platform and telephone bidding facilities will be at the disposal of all those unable to attend the sales.”

Brian Kavanagh, HRI Chief Executive added:

“Like many other sectors, COVID-19 is having a serious impact on all aspects of our business and the international travel consequences are becoming ever more complicated. While some potential purchasers may not be able to attend in person, the current situation requires us to be as creative as possible and through Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Horse Racing Ireland will assist Tattersalls Ireland and their international buyers in any way we can.”

It is with regret that owing to continued COVID-19 related travel restrictions in Ireland, Tattersalls Ireland has taken the decision to postpone the Derby and May Store Sales which were due to take place from Tuesday, July 14 – Thursday, July 16. It is intended that the Derby and May Store Sales will now take place at Tattersalls Ireland in Ratoath on Aug. 11 – 13, prevailing government regulations permitting.

Commenting on the postponement, Tattersalls Ireland CEO Matt Mitchell said:

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“Despite every effort being made to give all the normal participants an opportunity to attend the sales next week it became clear during the course of yesterday that the current obstacles in our way are insurmountable. It was reconfirmed that all attendees; be they vendors, purchasers or employees who were due to arrive in Ireland from the U.K. are required to self-isolate for 14 days without exception and therefore their attendance at the sale would not be possible.

“The extremely difficult decision to postpone the Derby and May Sales has been made in the context of the unprecedented and unpredictable COVID-19 related circumstances and in the best interests of our vendors, purchasers and staff. We are very conscious of the impact that this decision will have on our valued clients, but we are also at all times mindful of our wider social responsibilities and the prevailing government guidelines.

“Many businesses in Ireland who are dependent on international customers have faced the very same issues and we will continue to explore every avenue that will allow sales to take place in Ireland as soon as the current restrictions have been eased. We must all hope that the outlook improves, and at this stage it is our intention to hold our flagship Derby and May Store Sales in Ireland on Tuesday, Aug. 11 – Thursday, Aug. 13 as our first preference, or in the U.K. on those dates if necessary. Revised dates for the August National Hunt Sale will be announced in due course.”
