Old Tom Morris (Ire) (Getaway {Ger}) (lot 5), offered by Rob James Racing, was snapped up by Hamish Macauley Bloodstock for a sale-topping £150,000 at Saturday's Tattersalls Cheltenham January Sale.

A winner of his only point-to-point at Turtulla earlier this month, the 5-year-old gelding is out of the winning hurdler Caheronaun (Ire) (Milan {GB}), who was twice graded placed. He was earlier sold for €75,000 during the 2022 Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale.

Another six-figure lot was Admiral Stewart (Ire) (Soldier Of Fortune {Ire}) (lot 8), who went to agent Tom Malone and trainer Jamie Snowden for £130,000. Offered by Milestone Stables, the son of Ivy Queen (Ire) (Green Desert) is a half-brother to G3 Kilkenny H. Hurdle winner The Crafty Butcher (Ire) (Vinnie Roe {Ire}). A €78,000 store, he won at second asking at Tinahely on Jan. 7.

Rounding out the top three was lot 15, Melbourne Shamrock (Ire) (Hillstar {GB}), who hammered for £125,000 to Emmet Mullins from Ballycrystal Stables. Also a winner of a point-to-point–in his case at Ballycrystal–from two starts, the gelding is a half-brother to Barnaviddaun (Ire) (Scorpion {Ire}), who won the G2 Brown Lad H. Hurdle at Naas.

Overall, 16 lots sold of the 22 offered for a gross of £876,000. The average was £54,750 and the median was £67,500. Of the 16 sold, four made £100,000 or more.

The single day Tattersalls Cheltenham December Sale came to a close with 15 lots selling for over £100,000, two lots over £300,000 and a top price of £335,000 for lot 8, Tumuch (Fr) (Buck's Boum {Fr}).

After an impressive showing in his debut maiden at Lingstown where he posted an authoritative victory, Tumuch proved a hot commodity as bidding sailed through the ranks with Robbie Power, Tom Malone, Gordon Elliott, and Mouse O'Ryan putting up a spirited battle for the 4-year-old with the last coming out successful.

“He is a lovely horse, he is a well-made horse, who won well. He was very eye-catching. We had seen him in January, and we were waiting for him to run,” said O'Ryan. “We are building up a big team of young horses and they are starting to come to fruition. We have bought a Gold Cup horse out of the point-to-point field–we have only had one, but we'd like another!”

Out of the Maille Pistol dual-winning mare Pistol Girl, a half-sister to the dam of the Grade 2 winner and Grade 1-placed Sir Valentino (Fr) (Early March {GB}), Tumuch was sold by the 2021 Tattersalls Cheltenham December top consignor Ballycrystal Stables.

Wildcard entry Port Joulain (Fr) (Cokoriko {Fr}), consigned by Denis Murphy of Ballyboy Stables as Lot 20, was the second highest price on the evening, bringing £300,000 from Harold Kirk. He hails from the family of 11-time Grade 1 winner Apple's Jade (Fr).

The purchaser said: “He is going to Willie's; he was my pick of the sale. I love the sire, he gets the most winners in France. Apple's Jade is in the pedigree, and I love this horse as an individual. I think he has got loads of class.”

Third highest price on the sale was Belliano (GB) (Black Sam Bellamy {Ire}), lot 18 out of G3 Prix de Flore victress Miliana (Ire), who was bought by Tom Malone and Paul Nicholls for £255,000. This is also the family of G1 Galway Hurdle-placed Mirpour (Ire).

Sustained demand saw the flagship sale produce an aggregate of £3,448,000, a best-ever average of £104,485-up 15 per cent and the first time it has achieved a six-figure sum–and a record median of £85,000, up 26 per cent from last season. The seven Tattersalls Jockey Club Sales held in 2023 achieved a new record for annual aggregate with a turnover of £20,965,500.

The 2023 Tattersalls Cheltenham May Sale, which returned this year to Cheltenham for the first time since 2019, produced a record-breaking turnover of £22,750,500, and an average price of £87,502 for the 260 horses listed as sold. Additionally, Friday's sale posted a strong clearance rate of 97%.

The 4-year-old gelding I See The Sea (Ire) (Affinsea {Ire}) (lot 33), sold by Donnacha Doyle of Monbeg Stables; and 5-year-old Binge Worthy (Ire) (Walk In The Park {Ire}) (lot 13), consigned by trainer Denis Murphy's Ballyboy Stables, each brought £160,000 to lead the sale as co-toppers. I See The Sea was bought by the new training combination of Philip Hobbs and Johnson White. Mouse O'Ryan and trainer Gordon Elliot, acting as agent, signed for Bing Worthy.

“The production of these top-class point-to-pointers and horses-in-training should never be underestimated,” Matt Prior, Tattersalls Head of Sales, said. “We thank all the vendors for their skills and ability at producing these horses to their very best and as hugely exciting ongoing prospects for new connections, who take the horses forward to their full potential.”

Wildcard Jersey Des Brosses (Fr) (No Risk At All {Fr}) (lot 32) brought a sale-topping bid of £370,000 from Gordon Elliott Racing to lead the way during Thursday's Tattersalls Cheltenham February Sale.

The price was the highest for a 4-year-old since 2019. Second on his debut at Oldtown last weekend to fellow sales horse Jingko Blue (Fr) (Great Pretender {Ire}) (lot 36) who made £225,000 from JP McGrath Bloodstock, Jersey Des Brosses was consigned by Colin Bowe's Milestone Stables.

Elliott, bidding online, said, “He looked the standout horse in the sale, and I'd say a summer's grass is what he wants as he's a horse with plenty of improvement in him.

“He's one we're looking forward to for next year. We'd seen him in Colin's and liked him. We'll have to get him home and get him sold now.”

A pair of winning Walk In The Park (Ire) geldings from Monbeg Stables brought £290,000 and £250,000 apiece, as Mt Fugi Park (Ire) (lot 8) caught the eye of Stroud Coleman Bloodstock on behalf of Jonjo O'Neill Racing, and Highflyer Bloodstock bought Leader In The Park (Ire) (lot 28), respectively.

A total of 40 lots of 52 offered (77%) sold for a gross of £4,298,000, the third highest aggregate ever reached at the sale. The average rose 30% to £107,450 and the median rose by 29% to £77,500.

Matt Prior, Tattersalls Head of Sales, said, “To have six horses fetch over £200,000, 15 sell for over £100,000 and a record-breaking turnover is a fantastic result and shows the continuing desire by owners and trainers to buy the very best NH prospects at the Tattersalls Cheltenham sales.

“A top-price of £370,000 given for the 4-year-old Jersey Des Brosses is a fabulous result for trainer Colin Bowe and owner Walter Connors, who are always such strong supporters of Tattersalls, and it is a great start to this year's trade in 4-year-old point-to-pointers.”

Wingmen (Ire) (Kayf Tara {GB}) sold for a new Tattersalls Cheltenham January Sale record when making £250,000 to Gordon Elliott Racing/Bective Stud.

Sold as lot 8 and offered by Elliott's Cullentra House Stables, the bay won a point-to-point at first asking going three miles at Ballycrystal on Jan. 23. Out of the winning hurdler Raise You Five (Ire) (Flemensfirth), the €47,000 Tattersalls Ireland November NH Sale grad turned €88,000 Derby Sale purchase is from the family of Listed Christmas Hurdle winner Dramatist (GB).

“He is a very nice horse, and Gordon thinks a lot of him,” said buyer Eddie O'Leary, who sat with Elliott, who will continue to train the 5-year-old gelding. “He is a big raw horse, he won't begin to see the best of him until next year, he has been bought on behalf of Bective Stud.”

Another first-out winner, Sao Carlos (GB) (Blue Bresil {Fr}) (lot 18), who won a bumper on Boxing Day, went to Lisa Hales acting on behalf of her father, John, for £190,000. Consigned by Olly Murphy's Warren Chase Stables, the 5-year-old gelding is out of a half-sister to G2 Aintree bumper winner Diamond Sal (GB) (Bob Back) and three other black-type horses.

“He will probably be for Dad, Sir Alex Ferguson, Ged Mason and John Driver, the same syndicate that owns Hermes Allen,” said Hales. “This horse has got an amazing walk, an amazing presence, he is substantial and looks like a chaser for the future, and that is what we like.

“In fact, I backed him when he ran and before I knew he was coming here; I thought he put in a great run then.”

Magic Dawn (Ire) (Doyen {Ire}) (lot 14), from the draft of Michael Hickey's Sunnyhill Stud, was also knocked down to Aidan O'Ryan and Gordon Elliott for £185,000. A full-sister Magic Daze (Ire) (Doyen {Ire}), the G2 Mares' Novice Hurdle runner-up at Cheltenham, Magic Dawn was an impressive bumper winner at Punchestown on New Year's Eve.

Hickey said, “Magic Dawn is a gorgeous mare, has great presence, is a great walker and has a magic temperament. She needed her first run but four winners came out of that race and then she won very well on her second start. I think she has a huge future.

“The intention was to race her and, if she won a little race, cover her and keep her for breeding. However, we started to train her and she was showing that bit extra–when she won she just became too valuable for us to keep. We do have to balance the books.”

“She couldn't have been more impressive when she won, and the family speaks for itself,” said Mouse O'Ryan, who bought the mare for KTDA Racing, who has horses with Elliott. “We will be aiming her for something like the Aintree bumper.”

At the close of trade, 30 of the 40 lots offered (75%) sold for a gross of £2,406,000. The average rose 2% to £80,200, while the median decreased the same amount to £67,500 (-2%). Of those sold, seven horses made six figures or better.

Matthew Prior, Tattersalls Head of Sales, said, “I am delighted that this first sale of the year has produced such a positive result with a record-breaking top price and seven horses fetching over £100,000.”

Willmount (GB) (Blue Bresil {Fr}) (lot 8) and Shannon Royale (Ire) (Walk In The Park {Ire}) (lot 12) finished one-two in a 4-year-old maiden point-to-point at Comea in Ireland on Feb. 13, and that is also the order they finished in at the top of the leaderboard at the Tattersalls Cheltenham February Sale on Thursday. Willmount was sold to British-based trainer Neil Mulholland, who saw off the likes of Harold Kirk, Gerry Hogan and Eddie O'Leary to secure him for £340,000, while Shannon Royale was bought by Mags O'Toole to go to Gordon Elliott for £300,000.

Mulholland said of Willmount, “He is for owner Oliver Harris who has a few horses with us. The horse was one of the standout horses at the sale, and when I mentioned him to Oliver he said that number eight is his lucky number. The horse came highly recommended and I am delighted to have him on board. The sire is going places, and Oliver was keen to get him and stuck his neck out. We'll get him home, we'll treat him as a good horse, see if we can win a bumper.”

O'Toole said of Shannon Royale, “He is a fine big horse, the sire is on fire, he had a lovely run against the top lot, he is a horse for the future, he won't be rushed and goes into training with Gordon Elliot for an existing client. I loved the way the winner and this horse got away from the others, they quickened well. He is gorgeous, he has a lovely head on him.”

A total of 33 horses were sold on the day (clearance rate of 89%) for an aggregate of £2,718,000. The average was £82,364 and the median £60,000.

Current and five-time Irish Point-to-Point Champion Barry O'Neill has been appointed to the Tattersalls Ireland Bloodstock Team, effective Feb. 1. O'Neill will operate in a bloodstock representative role and join the inspection panel for all National Hunt sales, and he will also assist the team in sourcing top quality NH horses for the group including the Tattersalls Cheltenham Sales. O'Neill has 670 point-to-point winners under his belt and was the first rider to ever win all four regional titles in the same season.

Tattersalls Ireland CEO Simon Kerins said, “We are delighted to welcome Barry to the team at Tattersalls Ireland, he is an excellent addition to the bloodstock and inspection teams. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge on the pointing and racing fields and an expansive network of contacts which aligns very well with Tattersalls Ireland's objectives.”

Added O'Neill, “I am thrilled to be joining the Tattersalls Ireland team and I look forward to visiting many of Tattersalls Ireland's vendors over the coming weeks. A key part of my role will be inspecting some of the best National Hunt stock in Ireland and I believe my experience riding for many leading Point-to-Point handlers gives me a deep understanding of what purchasers look for when buying their future winners. I am also looking forward to working with the Tattersalls Cheltenham team where I will be assisting sourcing horses whilst continuing in my role riding each week.”

The Tattersalls Cheltenham May Sale grossed £2,923,000 for 53 lots sold and averaged £55,151. The median was £45,000 and the clearance rate was a sparkling 95%.

“The Cheltenham May Sale brings to a close what has been a challenging season for the point-to-point sector on a high note,” Tattersalls Cheltenham Head of Sales Matthew Prior said. “The handlers have continued to show great resilience in adapting to a disrupted racing and sales calendar as a result of the pandemic and it has been hugely satisfying to see their efforts rewarded at our recent sales held here in Park Paddocks, Newmarket.

“The hallmark of the Spring sales season has been the sustained strength and depth at every level, as witnessed by the exceptional clearance rates of 93% or more at our last three sales. To have sold the two highest priced point-to-pointers at public auction this May underlines the confidence purchasers have in the Tattersalls Cheltenham sales regardless of the location. This year has been spectacular for Tattersalls Cheltenham graduates as highlighted by the nine winners at the recent Cheltenham Festival and we look forward to our sales returning to Cheltenham in the not too distant future.”
