The Tattersalls August Sale may be one of the newest horses-in-training sales on the circuit, but it posted rock-solid results with the global demand for horses at all levels evident during Wednesday's trade.

A total of 217 horses sold at an aggregate of 5,267,300gns and an average of 24,273gns. The median was 14,000gns and the top price paid was 250,000gns for Operating (War Front) (lot 299). The 3-year-old colt is a full-brother to G3 Round Tower S. hero Intelligence Cross, the Irish/Hong Kong listed winner Warning Flag (Sweet Orange in Hong Kong), who was third in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup, and a half-brother to the Grade III-stakes placed Bay Of Biscay (Giant's Causeway).

The Castlebridge Consignment were not only responsible for that top lot, who was sold to Najd Stud, but it also drafted Mr McCann (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) (lot 305), who fetched the second-highest price on the day, 210,000gns to SackvilleDonald. Fourth in both the G2 Superlative S. and the G2 German 2000 Guineas, the colt is a four-time winner and is rated 101.

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented, “We saw records broken across the board at the recent Tattersalls July Sale and it has been encouraging to see the Tattersalls August Sale follow on in similar fashion.

“This is only the third renewal of the August Sale and very much the smallest catalogue for this new fixture, but the level of trade has demonstrated the sustained global demand for horses in training at all levels of the market and the extraordinary ability of sales of this nature at Tattersalls to attract buyers from throughout the world with such consistency.”

He added, “Domestic British and Irish buyers have been competing strongly throughout the day and the diverse international participation has as ever made a huge contribution to a successful sale.

“The customary strong contingent from the Gulf region has been active from start to finish and the Gulf buyers have faced stiff competition from all corners of the world including Australia, Hong Kong, India and the USA, all of which is a source of encouragement as we turn our attention to the Tattersalls yearling sales season which starts with the Somerville Yearling Sale on Tuesday, 6 September.”

The catalogue for the Tattersalls August Sale, which takes place on August 31, is now online and can be viewed at www.tattersalls.com.

A total of 360 lots will be on offer, comprising 246 colts and geldings in and out of training and 107 fillies in and out of training as well as six broodmares.

This year's edition of the Tattersalls August Sale has attracted consignments from many of the world's foremost owners and breeders, including drafts from Godolphin and Juddmonte Farms, as well as many of the UK and Ireland's leading trainers.

Highlights of the catalogue include the three-year-old filly Rolling The Dice (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who was third in the Group 2 May Hill S. as a two-year-old and who comes from a deep Juddmonte family and Jessica Harrington's G3 Boomerang S. winner Real Appeal (Ger) (Sidestep {Aus}). Group 3 Amethyst S. winner Pretreville (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}) was also purchased at the Tattersalls August Sale for 95,000 gns.

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “The Tattersalls August Sale was introduced for the first time in 2020 in response to COVID-related circumstances, but the enthusiasm for the sale from both vendors and purchasers over the last two years has made it an easy decision to make it a permanent fixture.”

He added, “We are delighted to catalogue 360 lots that will appeal to a wide cross section of buyers, both domestic and further afield. The slightly reduced catalogue size also means that the sale will be able to take place on just one day, Wednesday 31st August.”

Fabilis set a new record for the Tattersalls August Sale when selling for 350,000 guineas during the second and final session.

Whilst the sale is only in its second year, the price eclipsed the 220,000 guineas set at last year's inaugural sale. The clearance rate on the second day was an extraordinary 94 percent whilst the turnover was more than double yesterday's opening session, taking the sale proceeds to more than 5 million guineas. The combined turnover for the Tattersalls July Sale and August Sale was almost 18 million guineas, well above last year's July and August combined turnover of 14,371,300 guineas.

The Juddmonte Farms consigned and Ralph Beckett trained Fabilis set a new record at the Tattersalls August Sale when knocked down to Peter Doyle for 350,000 guineas on behalf of Prince Najd. The triple winning son of Frankel was victorious on his most recent start at Newmarket just five days ago and was offered with a Timeform rating of 104.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“He is for Prince Najd, a very long established client,” said Doyle. “I bought for his family many years ago. He is a lovely horse, I didn't think he'd make that much, but lots of people liked him. He comes from a very good operation, it is always nice to buy a horse from Juddmonte. The horse passed all the vets very well.
“The immediate plan will be to go and race in Saudi Arabia and aim for the Crown Prince Cup. We have had some success in the race before.”

Competition for the 3-year-old colt was fierce and included buyers from Australia and throughout the Gulf region.

At the conclusion of the 2021 Tattersalls August Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“Last year's inaugural Tattersalls August Sale, which was born out of COVID-related disruption to the racing calendar, was a huge success and the second renewal has returned figures which suggest that the fixture very much has a long-term future.

“With the recent July Sale returning to its customary numbers the August catalog was significantly smaller than last year, but the vibrance and extraordinary level of international participation which are the hallmarks of sales of this nature at Tattersalls have been in evidence from start to finish. Buyers from throughout Europe, the Gulf region, Australia and the U.S. have added to the strong domestic participation and we have yet again hosted a sale which has achieved a clearance rate in excess of 90 percent and generated sustained demand in all sectors of the market.

“Equally pleasing has been the fact that the August Sale has seen a return almost to normality after more than a year of staging sales which have been hampered by COVID-related protocols. It has been a real pleasure to have welcomed so many people back to Park Paddocks as we turn our attention to the Tattersalls yearling sales season starting with the Somerville Yearling Sale next week.”

The two-day Tattersalls August Sale, being held for only the second time after last year's COVID-related debut, got off to a solid start with Bunglejungleparty headlining proceedings that saw a strong clearance rate and four lots topping 50,000 guineas.

The top lot on the opening day of the Tattersalls August Sale was the 2-year-old colt Bunglejungleparty who realized a bid of 125,000 guineas to agent Will Douglass. The son of Bungle Inthejungle, who recently had his first Group 1 winner when Winter Power won the Nunthorpe Stakes, was consigned by Jamie Railton on behalf of owner Theresa Marnane. Conrad Allen, standing at the top of the stairs, was the underbidder.

“I have had luck buying from these connections at last year's sale with Pom Malpic,” said Douglass. “This is just a very nice horse with form. He goes to Qatar.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Bunglejungleparty has run four times in France and finished third last time out in a 7 furlong listed race at Vichy.

“The Marnanes are such enthusiasts, I am so pleased for them,” said Railton. “He was a pretty obvious horse and he had an avenue to the U.S. as well as he is a non-winner. This sale suits every single jurisdiction in the world to buy horses so we must strive to support it.”

Marnane, who bought the colt as a yearling for just €12,000, was all smiles after the sale and said: “I am over the moon. He is a very good-looking horse, big and strong, everybody wanted him. He had clean X-rays and a very good scope, and there were three people on him over 100,000 guineas.”

“We sold Will a very good horse last year, who has been stakes placed in Qatar; he knows where to get the good ones from,” laughed Marnane.

The Roger Charlton-trained Encourage is set to head for Bahrain to target the new Bahrain Turf Series that features ten races, each worth £50,000, which runs from Dec. 10 until March 4. The 3-year-old gelding by Iffraaj is out of a Cape Cross daughter of the listed winner Fairy Godmother, dam of the Group 1 winner My Kingdom Of Fife. Bred and owned by the Queen, the 'Timeform' 90 rated gelding was purchased by Bahrain's HE Sultan Aldeen Al-Khalifa for 75,000 guineas and has won over 10 furlongs.

“He is a little under the handicap mark, but we think he will go well in Bahrain and hopefully he will improve,” said the horse's new trainer Ali Majeed. “He is for Sheikh Sultan and we are looking forward to running him. Sometimes we buy a nice horse and sometimes we don't! We hope this will be a nice horse!”

The Tattersalls August Sale continues at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1, with the second and final session.

The second year of the Tattersalls August Sale kicked off its run at Park Paddocks in Newmarket on Tuesday. The clearance rate remained solid when compared to the 2020 renewal, which was inaugurated due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Of the 144 horses offered during the first session 127 (88%) were marked as sold for a gross of 1,459,200gns. The average of 11,490gns and median of 7,000gns were down 36% and 42% on 2020, respectively.

Leading the way on day one was lot 169, Bunglejungleparty (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}), who brought 125,000gns from Will Douglass of Charlie Gordon-Watson Bloodstock. Consigned by Jamie Railton on behalf of Theresa Marnane, the Qatari-bound colt was the first six-figure lot of the sale.

His sire celebrated a first Group 1 scorer with Winter Power (Ire) in the G1 Nunthorpe S. at York earlier this month and the four-time starter appears to be shaping with plenty of promise, having run third in the Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles at Vichy in July.

“I have had luck buying from these connections at last year's sale with Pom Malpic,” said Douglass. “This is just a very nice horse with form. He goes to Qatar.”

His dam, the winning Brazilian Breeze (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), is a full-sister to stakes winner Rivellino (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). The second dam is Group 3 winner Brazilian Bride (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), while in the extended family are Group 1 winners Dolphin Street (Fr) (Bluebird), Insight (Fr) (Sadler's Wells) and Saffron Walden (Fr) (Sadler's Wells).

“The Marnanes are such enthusiasts, I am so pleased for them,” added Railton. “We are so appreciative of our Qatari bidders. He was a pretty obvious horse and he had an avenue to the US as well as he is a non-winner. We are so appreciative of all these people coming to Tattersalls to buy horses. This sale suits every single jurisdiction in the world to buy horses so we must strive to support it.”

Marnane said of the €12,000 Goffs Autumn Online Sale yearling, “I am over the moon. He is a very good-looking horse, big and strong, everybody wanted him today. He had clean X-rays and a very good scope, and there were three people on him over 100,000gns.”

She added, “We rolled the dice here. He was entered in a Group 3 in Germany this weekend, but the yearling sales are coming up.

“We sold Will a very good horse last year, who has been stakes placed in Qatar; he knows where to get the good ones from.

“This date works in the calendar, the sale companies are doing a great job to get these horse sold and we are looking forward to the yearling sale next week.”

Barton Sales offered Encourage (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) (lot 197) late on Tuesday and were rewarded with a winning bid of 75,000gns. Trainer Ali Majeed signed the ticket on behalf of His Excellency Sultan Aldeen MS Al-Khalifa of Bahrain.

“He is a little under the handicap mark, but we think he will go well in Bahrain and hopefully he will improve,” said Majeed, who is eyeing the lucrative Bahrain Turf Series for the winning 3-year-old gelding. “He is for Sheikh Sultan and we are looking forward to running him. We hope this will be a nice horse.”

Bred and raced by The Queen and trainer Roger Charlton, Encourage is a winner over 10 furlongs. The bay is out of a winning half-sister to G1 Queen Elizabeth S. hero Kingdom of Fife (GB) (Kingmambo), Group 3-placed Four Winds (GB) (Red Ransom), and the dam of stakes winner and G3 Prix Eclipse third Royal Spring (Fr) (Tamayuz {GB}).

National Hunt racing is next on the cards for Dirham Emirati (Ire) (Vadamos {Fr}), who caught the eye of Phil Middleton. Mick Sheridan placed the winning bid of 62,000gns for Middleton, who missed Dirham Emirati's time in the ring due to heavy traffic.

“Phil has been very keen on this horse for a while, he has watched all his runs,” said Sheridan. “Phil's got a keen eye for a jumper and that is the plan–but he will [give] the horse a bit of time off first. He should go with a bit of cut in the ground.”

A 22,000gns Tattersalls December foal turned 55,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, the 3-year-old gelding was consigned by David Simcock's Trillium Place Stables. Sold as lot 180, he has a win over 1 1/2 miles and is rated 78. His sire Vadamos is now a National Hunt sire at Coolmore's Grange Stud after first standing on Tally-Ho Stud's Flat roster. Dirham Emirati's granddam is L'Ancresse (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), named the European Champion 3-Year-Old Filly in 2003 and runner-up in the G1 Irish Oaks and the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Added Sheridan of his temporarily stranded friend, “I am very good friends with Phil, we were involved in Arab racing together. He rang me when he got stuck in the traffic two hours ago, and then rang me an hour later when he had not moved.”

The highest-priced filly to sell on Tuesday was lot 211, Eastern Delight (Ire) (Camacho {GB}). Part of the James Owen Racing consignment for Rabbah Bloodstock, the daughter of Glamorous Air (Ire) (Air Express {Ire}) went for 50,000gns to breeder Robert Bailey of New Hall Farm.

“There is one mare in India and one mare in Australia, so apart from those, we have nearly all the family's breeding mares at home, and they are all “Glamorous,'” said Bailey who bid through Jason Singh over the telephone and was not opposed to renaming his new acquisition.

Already a half-sister to G3 Prix du Petit Couvert heroine Just Glamorous (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}) and G3 Sapphire S. Victoria Glamorous Spirit (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), the €180,000 Goffs Orby yearling is rated 76 and has placed twice in six runs.

“There was no need for me to come up to Newmarket as she was the one I wanted–we have done all the checks we needed,” Bailey added from his Chepstow base. “She will go into training for a couple of years with Chris Mason and we will try and improve her form and then she will come back to the farm.”

The sale continues with another 230 lots at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

The Tattersalls August Sale was last year borne out of necessity-a three-month gap in the calendar lasting until early June making it difficult to assess the merits of stock for a horses-in-training sale only a month later, and Covid restrictions complicating sales logistics-but the fixture that was instituted last summer as a back-up plan for vendors and buyers proved an inspired concept. Demand for horses was high and figures wound up not far off the popular and well-established Tattersalls July and Autumn Horses-In-Training Sales. The August Sale saw 510 sold from 561 offered (91%), with an average of 16,530gns and a median of 9,000gns.

The Tattersalls August Sale is back for a second renewal at Park Paddocks this week, though the return to normalcy of the July Sale means this catalogue is slightly smaller and is therefore down to two days on Tuesday and Wednesday. The 458 offerings comprise horses in and out of training, fillies and broodmares.

Four-year-old colt Whisper Not (GB) (Poet's Voice {GB}) was one graduate of last year's sale to fairly quickly reward connections; purchased for 90,000gns by David Meah and Jamie Lloyd's Meah-Lloyd Bloodstock as a 69-rated winner of his two most recent starts, Whisper Not joined trainer Richard Baltas in California and placed first-up in the G2 Mathis Brothers Mile S. before winning the G3 San Francisco Mile S. in April. Three-year-old colt Captain Magnum (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) has also proven a useful purchase for Italian owner Luigi Ginobbi and trainer Luciano Vitabile; the son of Kodiac was plucked from Archie Watson's yard for 17,000gns and three months later won the Listed Premio Divino Amore Trofeo Magician.

Like its July and Autumn counterparts, last year's August Sale proved extremely popular among buyers from the Middle East-four of the top five lots were purchased by Saudi connections, and another for Bahrain with the potential to run in Riyadh-as well as America and the National Hunt sector. There will be plenty for those markets, and indeed many others, to sift through this week. Among the headliners of the catalogue are wildcards Trais Fluors (GB) (Dansili {GB}) (lot 190C) and Pablo Escobarr (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 421A). The latter, a 5-year-old gelding from the William Haggas yard, finished eighth in the recent Ebor H., having previously run third behind Hukum (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G3 Geoffrey Freer S.

Another with recent group-race form is the 6-year-old entire Pretreville (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}) (lot 366), last year's G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil Longines victor who was second in the G2 Prix du Muguet in May. Ballydoyle brings a draft of 18 colts, and those with stakes form include this year's G3 Gallinule S. second Arturo Toscanini (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 397); Lough Derg (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 395), second to Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial in May; and Horoscope (Ire) (No Nay Never) (lot 392), who has run eight times this season and won the Listed Vincent O'Brien Ruby S. at Killarney on Aug. 19.

Juddmonte brings a boutique draft of four here, and those are headed by Fabilis (GB) (Frankel {GB}) (lot 380), who won twice last year at two and again over 2400 metres on the Newmarket July course on Friday. Jockey Rossa Ryan said after Friday's race, “A mile and a half is fine but he would stay a mile six I'd say as he settles and relaxes well. When he gets a good strong gallop he is really happy. He is in the sales and he will do well for whoever gets him as he is a good little horse.”

As part of an ongoing culling process, Shadwell Estate Company brings 44 to Park Paddocks. Those include Afkaar (Kitten's Joy) (lot 330), a 3-year-old full-brother to Breeders' Cup winner and sire Bobby's Kitten and multiple Grade II winner Camelot Kitten who broke his maiden on Apr. 5 at Marseille Borely for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget; Maraakiz (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}) (lot 332), a gelded 3-year-old son of South African champion filly Entisaar (Aus) (More Than Ready) who won at two; 3-year-old colt Mothill (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}) (lot 371), who has a win and a second from four starts between 2000 and 2400 metres for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget; Taskheer (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}) (lot 373), a winner in his third start in May at three for trainer Francois Rohaut; and Taqareer (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) (lot 369), a winner at three last year and placed in four of six runs this season at the handicap level for John and Thady Gosden.

Other highlights of the catalogue include wildcard Inigo Jones (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) (lot 404A), a Cheveley Park homebred 3-year-old colt who was third in the 2000 metre Listed Newmarket S. in May; Zagato (GB) (Frankel {GB}) (lot 424), a 3-year-old colt out of Izzi Top (GB) who won over a mile at Thirsk in June and is rated 85; and French listed-placed 2-year-old Bunglejungleparty (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}) (lot 169).

The Tattersalls August Sale begins at 11 a.m. at Park Paddocks on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The catalog for the two-day Tattersalls August Sale, which takes place Tuesday, Aug. 31 – Wednesday Sept. 1, is now online and can be viewed at www.tattersalls.com.

Numbering 458 lots, the Tattersalls August Sale comprises 308 colts and geldings in/out of training and 138 fillies in/out of training, as well as 12 broodmares.

This year's edition of the Tattersalls August Sale has again attracted consignments from many of the world's foremost owner/breeders including Ballydoyle Stables, Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms and Shadwell Estate Company, as well as drafts from many of the UK and Ireland's leading trainers.

High-class French form is a feature amongst the leading lots cataloged in the August Sale. Agent Jamie Railton will offer Pascal Bary's Group 3 winner Pretrville, runner-up in the Group 2 Prix du Muguet in May, alongside a pair of Listed-placed two-year-olds colts in Bunglejungleparty and Papa Don't Preach.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Well-bred colts with high-class form are a customary feature of drafts from Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle Stables and the Group 3 placed duo Arturo Toscanini and Lough Derg and the Listed placed Horoscope look certain to attract plenty of interest.

Several promising lightly-raced 3-year-olds look certain to pique the interest of buyers including the Paddy Twomey trained Beamish, the Teofilo half-brother to dual Group 3 winner Bourree who was an impressive three-length winner of his only start at Leopardstown. The winning Territories gelding London Royal has earned an official rating of 94 following only three starts for trainer Ted Walsh, and Roger Varian's 90-rated Dinoo broke his maiden by four lengths on his most recent start at Haydock. William Haggas will offer the progressive Sea the Stars gelding Chalk Stream, rated 86 following a win on his most recent start at York.

Consignments from Juddmonte Farms are always amongst the highlights of horses-in-training sales at Tattersalls and their select August Sale draft is no exception featuring the smart three-year-old colt Fabilis, a 96-rated full brother to Group 3 winner Monarchs Glen. The ever-popular Godolphin draft includes a customary offering of smartly-bred fillies led by Bright Spirit, a daughter of Dubawi out of the three-time Group 3 winner Local Time.

Buyers looking for well-related fillies will have plenty more to consider including the Baroda Stud-consigned Golden Hind, a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Amazing Maria, and Burning Sea, a full-sister to Group 3 winner Blue de Vega and to the dam of Group 2 winner Angel Power who will be offered by the Castlebridge Consignment.

The largest consignment comes from Shadwell Estate Company who have a draft of 44 lots catalogued featuring unexposed winning 3-year-olds Afkaar, Maraakiz, Mothill, and Taskheer and several highly-rated older horses including the 94-rated Taqareer. Amongst the 27 lots offered by the Castlebridge Consignment are two promising 3-year-olds trained by John and Thady Gosden in Rifleman and Zagato. The 95-rated Rifleman has shown smart form in his three starts this year whilst the regally-bred Zagato, a son of Frankel out of the dual Group 1 winner Izzi Top, earned an official rating of 86 following an easy 3 1/4-length win at Thirsk on his most recent start.

Commenting on the catalog for the Tattersalls August Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“The Tattersalls August Sale was introduced for the first time in 2020 in response to COVID-related circumstances, but the enthusiasm for the sale from both vendors and purchasers and an extraordinary clearance rate made it an easy decision to make it a permanent fixture. With the Tattersalls July Sale being held in more normal circumstances this year, it was natural that the catalogue size for the second edition of the August Sale would reduce but we are still delighted to catalogue 458 lots over two days that will appeal to a wide cross section of buyers, both domestic and further afield. We are also pleased that buyers from the key Middle Eastern markets will find it much easier to travel to the UK for the sale with the recent easing of restrictions for fully vaccinated travelers.”

The Tattersalls August Sale will take place from Tuesday, Aug. 31 to Wednesday, Sept. 1, and buyers unable to attend the sale in person will be able to bid via the Tattersalls Live Internet Bidding platform or telephone bidding through members of the Tattersalls team. Full details of the expanded bidding options can be found on the Tattersalls website.
