SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Different surface. Different distance. Different pace scenario. Far different outcome for Life's an Audible (Audible) Saturday in the opener at Saratoga Race Course.

When her career debut at 1 1/16 miles on turf on July 30 was switched to the main track at one mile due to wet conditions, Life's an Audible was prominent for six furlongs, but weakened and ended up 21 lengths behind her Todd Pletcher stablemate Miz Sense (Street Sense.

Running 5 1/2 furlongs over a turf course rated as firm in her second start Saturday, the Repole Stable chestnut came from off the pace under Irad Ortiz, Jr. and beat the maiden special weight field by 1 1/4 lengths. Sent off at 7-1 in the field of 10 fillies, she reached the wire in 1:03.29 and paid $16.40.

It was the second consecutive day that Pletcher watched one of his 2-year-olds flourish in its second start. On Friday, Locked (Gun Runner), turned in a very professional performance for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Walmac Farm.

Bayare (Midshipman), the 2-1 favorite, and Echo Baybe (IRE) (Cable Bay {IRE}) set the early pace through fractions of :21.54 seconds and :45.38. Starting from Post 9, Ortiz worked Life's an Audible toward the inside. She got the job done in the stretch.

“Shortening up from an off-the-turf race; got some experience in there,” Pletcher said. “They went pretty fast early. She got out-footed a little bit in the beginning but picked it up nicely around the turn came with a good run down the lane.”

Repole purchased Life's an Audible for $200,000 at the OBS March sale. She was bred in Kentucky by Susan Moulton.

Ortiz was aboard for the July 30 race and figured that Life's an Audible would again be part of the pace scenario. Instead, she was about six lengths back after a quarter mile.

“She was quick last time, so I knew that she was going to be close, but they ran away from me early on,” he said.

Ortiz guided the filly closer to the rail and had her in position to make a late run.

“When she hit the clear she took off,” he said.

LIFE'S AN AUDIBLE (f, 2, Audible–Catkins, by Data Link) was an early factor on debut but faded to be a well-beaten fourth at Saratoga in a rained-off one-mile event July 30. On the turf in a true sprint Saturday, the 7-1 shot took her time getting into stride and race in the back half of the field before moving up into the turn. Fanned out to be six wide past the quarter pole, the $200,000 OBS March grad rallied to the front inside the final sixteenth and got a bit of separation late to score by 1 1/4 lengths over first-time starter Tammy Lynn (Distorted Humor). Life's an Audible becomes the sixth winner for her freshman sire (by Into Mischief).

Prominent owner/breeder Susan Moulton has made a $2-million donation to Town Branch Park in Lexington which will be used to fund the construction of a water play area named in honor of Moulton's son Will Naylor Smith, who passed away 16 years ago at the age of eight.

Moulton, who for the last five years has been splitting her time between San Antonio, Texas, and her Versailles farm, has expressed an interest in becoming more involved in the community–especially with children.

Town Branch Park is helping to transform acres of space behind Lexington's Rupp Arena previously used for parking into green space. The project is being funded, programmed and maintained by private donations and grants.

“I love the location of the park,” said Moulton, who bred and races last year's GII Castle Key Bourbon S. winner Andthewinneris (Oscar Performance). “Families and visitors will have access to a big park in the heart of Lexington. I was attracted to the water feature because Will loved water and the outdoors. You don't ever get over the loss of a child, but you get through it by carrying them along with you.

“I believe that water heals. I hope people will go there and feel a sense of relaxation and release. Children will be able to play and learn as they play.”

“This is truly a transformational gift,” said Allison Lankford, executive director of Town Branch Park. “The water play area will be one of the most treasured and active assets of the park.

I can hardly wait to see children of all ages and abilities playing in this fun, safe and inclusive environment.”

The area also will include a bronze sculpture of Will by artist Christine Turnbull. The sculpture is based on a photo of Will and will be a replica of a sculpture at the DoSeum Museum

in San Antonio and the Imua Discovery Gardens in Hawaii.

Construction on the park is set to begin this summer.

Susan Moulton's Andthewinneris came flying late to win the GII Castle & Key Bourbon S. at Keeneland Sunday, leading home an exacta for his freshman sire while also becoming the Mill Ridge stallion's first stakes winner. The 4-1 shot broke from the far outside in the field of 12, angled over and settled near the back of the field. Still some 10 lengths back approaching the stretch, the bay made eye-catching progress leaving the turn and closed stoutly down the center of the course, hitting the front at midstretch and striding clear in stakes record time.

“100% [I thought he would turn in a winning performance],” said winning trainer Wayne Catalano. “The way the horse was training, I thought we were going to win the race. Obviously, it's horse racing and anything can happen, but I go in thinking we can win. The horses feel it. Everything went like I planned. Today we had pace and everything came together like it should. When you make a plan and everything comes together, it's a great time.”

The Bourbon victory awarded Andthewinneris an automatic berth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

“He was born on my farm,” said owner/breeder Susan Moulton, who was winning her second graded race of the young Keeneland meet following Manny Wah's victory in the G2 Stoll Kennon Ogden Phoenix S. Friday. “I just bought my farm four years ago. Got my farm manager here, my husband [Shane Sellers], my trainer. We're so happy. What a beautiful race. And I'm still proud of 'Manny' from Friday.”

Andthewinneris became the first winner for his freshman sire Oscar Performance (by Kitten's Joy) when he captured his 5 1/2-furlong debut over the Keeneland lawn in April. Trying the main track in his next start, he was a well-beaten third behind Gulfport in the July 4 Bashford Manor S. Back on the turf and stretching out to 1 1/16 miles, he was outkicked when third as the favorite in the Aug. 31 GIII With Anticipation S. at Saratoga last time out.

Pedigree Notes:

A four-time Grade I winner, Oscar Performance now has 11 first-crop winners. With Deer District's runner-up effort, the stallion has three graded-placed runners, in addition to his graded winner Andthewinneris. His daughter G Laurie was third in the GI Natalma S. and his son Lachaise was third in the GIII Pilgrim S.

Acquired by Moulton for $30,000 at the 2018 Keeneland November sale, Run Like the Boss, in foal to Cupid, sold for $20,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale. Her now yearling colt by Enticed sold at that same sale for $42,000. The mare produced a filly by Cupid this spring and was bred back to Raging Bull (Fr).

Commonwealth Polo Club is hosting the first “Polo for the PDJF” on Friday, April 23, 2021, in Paris, Kentucky, with proceeds benefiting the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (“PDJF”).

The evening will include dinner, drinks, entertainment, a silent auction, with the main attraction being the retired and active jockeys who will be playing polo while riding retired race horses. Jockeys who will be playing include Chris McCarron, Rosie Napravnik, PJ Cooksey, Anthony Stephen, Michael Heath and many others. Additionally, the event will be emceed by Hall of Fame jockey, Gary Stevens, and attended by Shane Sellers, Jean Cruget, Sandy Hawley, Mike Manganello, and Gary Birzer, along with other active and retired jockeys.

“We are really looking forward to the event,” said Susan Moulton, wife of well-known retired jockey Shane Sellers, and member of Commonwealth Polo Club. “They are coming out to play to raise money and awareness for their fellow jockeys who have suffered catastrophic injuries as a result of an on-track accident. As there is no guaranteed funding for the PDJF, it is important that we come together as an industry to assist in providing for these jockeys who gave so much for the sport of horse racing.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="433" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Moulton, along with Matt Bowling of Bowling Bloodstock, Vinery Sales and Silver Springs Training, and Jorge Vasquez, co-founder of the Commonwealth Polo Club, came up with the idea and are hoping to make it an annual event.

“Raising awareness for the risk and injuries jockeys face is something that is important to me,” said Vasquez, “as I have a brother who is a retired jockey and many family members and friends who are in the racing industry.”

During the silent auction, guests will be given the opportunity to bid on a unique array of items including autographed racing memorabilia, artwork, jewelry, and equestrian items. Auction items of interest include halters worn by American Pharoah and Justify donated by Coolmore America, Tapit donated by Gainesway Farm, and Midnight Bisou donated by Bloom Racing Stables and Hill N Dale Farm.

Sponsors of the polo teams include Gainesway Farm, Winstar Farm, Godolphin at Jonabell Farm, Mt. Brilliant Farm, Safari North Farm, Team Valor, Bowling Bloodstock, Vinery Sales, and Silver Springs Training.

Musical Entertainment will be “The Steve Norman Band.” There will be food provided by Proud Mary BBQ. The gates open at 6:30 p.m. with the polo match beginning at 7:00 p.m. EST. Admission for the event is $10 per car load. Commonwealth Polo Club is located at 2665 Bethlehem Road in Paris, Kentucky.

For more information please contact Jorge Vasquez at Commonwealth Polo Club at 859-321-6785.

Season 4 of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's popular live webcam series Foal Patrol will debut online at www.foalpatrol.com on Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Season 4 will feature in-foal mares at Mill Ridge Farm, Safari North at Pauls Mill Farm, and Three Chimneys Farm — all based in Kentucky — and Old Tavern Farm in New York. Season 4 will also feature champion sire Tapit at Gainesway Farm in Kentucky.

Foal Patrol is a one-of-a-kind collection of live cameras following the daily activities of in-foal mares produced by the National Museum of Racing. Millions of people throughout the world have viewed the popular webcam program since its initial launch in late 2017.

Here is a closer look at the Foal Patrol Season 4 participants:

Janae (mare, Safari North at Pauls Mill Farm, Versailles, Ky.)

In foal to Malibu Moon, Janae is a 5-year-old bay daughter of Closing Argument out of the Petionville mare Debs Pet. Bred in Louisiana by Jim and Sue Harris, Janae won two of seven career races and was in the money two other occasions. Both of her wins, including the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity, took place at Lone Star Park.

Owned by Susan Moulton, Janae produced a filly by Mizzen Mast in 2019 and a filly by Daredevil in 2020. Janae's foal by Malibu Moon has an expected due date of April 12, 2021.

Miss Always Ready (mare, Three Chimneys Farm, Versailles, Ky.)

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

In foal to Palace Malice, Miss Always Ready is an 8-year-old dark bay daughter of More Than Ready out of the Dehere mare Miss Seffens. Bred in Kentucky by Santucket Stables, she was purchased by Three Chimneys at the Keeneland April 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale in 2014. During her racing career, Miss Always Ready won once from five starts, earning her lone victory in October 2014 at Belmont Park.

Miss Always Ready is expected to deliver her foal in late March/early April 2021. The foal will be a full sibling to Structor, winner of the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Structor was Miss Always Ready's first foal. She has since given birth to fillies by Palace Malice (2019) and Gun Runner (2020).

Miss Chapin (mare, Mill Ridge Farm, Lexington, Ky.)

In foal to Oscar Performance, Miss Chapin is a 19-year-old bay daughter of Royal Academy out of the Akarad (FR) mare Society Dream (FR). Bred in Kentucky by Jerome and John Ammerman, Miss Chapin won her lone career start at Del Mar in 2004.

Miss Chapin is the dam of Grade 1 winner Coffee Clique and Grade 2 winner Admission Office, who is still active on the track. Miss Chapin's foal by Oscar Performance has an expected due date of March 18, 2021.

To the Moon Alice (mare, Old Tavern Farm, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.)

In foal to Uncle Mo, To the Moon Alice is a 7-year-old dark bay daughter of Malibu Moon out of the Partner's Hero mare Love Match. Bred in Kentucky by Hare Forest Farm, she was purchased by Old Tavern Farm at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale in 2017. To the Moon Alice made only two starts in her brief racing career in 2016. She finished third in her career debut at Gulfstream Park and was sixth in her only other race, which took place at Belmont.

To the Moon Alice has had three foals — all of which are owned by Old Tavern Farm — colts by Maclean's Music, Will Take Charge, and Ghostzapper. To the Moon Alice's fourth foal has an expected due date of April 20, 2021.

Tapit (featured stallion, Gainesway Farm, Lexington, Ky.)

One of the most influential and breed-shaping stallions of the past half-century, Tapit has sired 27 grade 1 winners, 31 yearlings to bring $1 million or more at auction, and earners of more than $162 million on the racetrack. He stands at historic Gainesway for a 2021 fee of $185,000.

To date, Tapit has sired 23 percent black-type horses, 138 overall stakes winners (86 graded), eight Eclipse Award winners, and six Breeders' Cup winners. His 2020 standouts include undefeated Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Essential Quality. Tapit has been North America's leading sire three times.
