“She's been incredible this year, and the backend of last year, and just seems to be getting better with each run,” reflected rider Tom Marquand. “She's got the heart and the talent to see it through and to get a Group 1 on the board for Mrs [Ling] Tsui is amazing. Sent forward from his outside stall to take up the running after the first two furlongs, the William Haggas-trained 3-5 favourite who had been a battling third in Royal Ascot's G1 St James's Palace S. June 14 was soon in total control. Wound up over half a mile from home, the bay looked under threat as Vagalame (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) snuck up his inner inside the final two furlongs but that rival's effort proved short-lived and the homebred kept digging deep to score by half a length from Zagrey (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), with Junko (GB) (Intello {Ger}) 3/4 of a length away in third.

My Prospero, who encountered Claymore (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) when third at Newmarket on debut in October, beat the subsequent Britannia H. winner Thesis (GB) (Kingman {GB}) when breaking his maiden at Newbury Apr. 16 before upstaging Reach For The Moon (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in Sandown's Listed Heron S. May 19. His St James's Palace effort was his last at a mile and there is a chance he could even get further than this 10-furlong trip based on the way he ground this out.

There was an incident after the finish, where the winner dislodged Marquand after proving difficult to stop, but the duo appeared fine shortly after.

“Normally here you pull up straight but I hit the line that hard that I though 'uh-oh, I'm not going to pull up there,'” Marquand told Racing Post. “I went to go left–one other came with me–and just as he got to where the cones were he changed onto his right lead and tried to go off to the right.

“It wasn't his fault, it was just one of those unfortunate things. He looks fine–that's the main worry when something like that happens–and we'll certainly have better days to come.”

“I never really intended to make the running, I just wanted to be positive,” added Marquand. “It was his first go at a mile and a quarter and I thought he'd stay very well but he still showed babyish signs. He's a beautiful horse, he's still learning and he has a big future.”

“I think she is a promising filly and I'm pretty convinced she didn't like that soft ground at all,” said in-form trainer William Haggas. “She was off the bridle and in trouble three out, but she wants to win and it was her guts that got her through today. She is a Sea The Stars and they can do anything because he is such a good sire. I think she will mature and keep getting better, but she might need some more time. She has come a long way in such a short space of time and I think she will get further as she gets stronger. We will see how she is after this and I doubt we will put her away, but the [G2] Ribblesdale [at Royal Ascot] might come a bit too quick.”

“She was keen early on, but she's in control and you want her like that,” explained Frankie Dettori after claiming an outright record of six winners in the contest. “The ground is a lot deeper than you guys think and everybody was struggling from four furlongs out. I kept her together and, from two-and-a-half to the winning post, I didn't see another horse. She won in good style by 5 1/2 lengths and what more do you want? We never had any worries about staying a mile-and-a-half. She's getting there, Enable won at Chester and at this stage she was probably on the same par. With every race this filly is improving, we've liked her since day one and I'm delighted. We can sleep nicely tonight.”

John Gosden, moving up to within two of Sir Henry Cecil's race-record nine editions, added, “It's interesting that Frankie said the ground was quite tiring after the little bit of rain they've had on it. A few of them were struggling four or five out. Frankie waited to go and she's picked up well and looked like a mile-and-a-half would be right up her alley. She couldn't have done it any better really. She was saddled in the stables at Sandown and saddled in the stables at Wolverhampton, so it's the first time she's been saddled in front of a crowd today. She got a bit edgy, but I think she settled after a furlong and found a lovely rhythm, which is what it's all about. She's very well balanced, but there's no reason we won't get some sausage and bacon on the [May 23] breakfast morning at Epsom. We can have a canter round the track there to see how she handles it. She's a lovely filly, and well-balanced with a good stride, and she's learnt a lot today. We've been lucky to win the Oaks three times and she very much deserves to be in that league.”

Reflecting on the performance of Life of Dreams, Charlie Appleby's assistant Alex Merriam said, “We were pleased, that was only her second run and I think she's run into a very nice horse. We'll see how she is and hope things go to plan. The Oaks might still be a possibility, but I haven't spoken to Charlie yet. She'd either run there or the [G2] Ribblesdale [at Royal Ascot]. Charlie will speak to His Highness [Sheikh Mohammed] and we'll see how we go.”

Ching Shih's trainer David Simcock is disinclined to go for a rematch with the winner in next month's G1 Cazoo Oaks. “Obviously the winner is pretty smart and it doesn't take a genius to work that out,” he commented. “I said, before the race, they were just five novice winners and they were all in the same boat. The winner looks exceptional, but our filly has acquitted herself well. She was the only one out of the first four not to have had a run [this year] and she'll come forward for it. I think, when she gets her mother's [preferred soft] ground, she'll improve for it as it will actually make her quicker, if that doesn't sound stupid. I don't know where she will go, but it won't be Epsom, unless the winner scares everything off.”

Emily Upjohn, half to a yearling filly by Capella Sansevero (GB), is the sixth of seven foals and one of three scorers out of Listed Prix Petite Etoile third Hidden Brief (GB) (Barathea {Ire}). Successful in four of his last five starts including the 13-furlong G3 Bahrain Trophy on ground similar to this at Newmarket in July, Al Aasy's only blip was when last of six in Goodwood's G3 Gordon S. on a fast surface three weeks later. He will eventually have to prove that a lively surface holds no fears and he may have to do that at Epsom next month, but on this evidence he will be a tough nut to crack whatever turns up in Surrey. “He was just getting above himself and the gap between the John Porter and the Coronation Cup was too long,” his trainer elaborated. “I came to the conclusion that if he couldn't win this under a penalty, he wouldn't be wining a Coronation Cup. He's very well-balanced and I think he'll glide around Epsom. We loved him as a yearling and it's win-win for us, as he was bred by Mrs Tsui who has the younger full-sister Sea Karats (Ire) who will have more to offer in time. I've always thought Sea the Stars was a good stallion and Sheikh Juma [Dalmook Al Maktoum] and I were mad-keen to buy as many as possible at the start. They are tough and they stay. Some are tricky, but they are good.”
