Mary Abeel Sullivan, the breeder and owner of MGISW Get Stormy (Stormy Atlantic), has passed at the age of 94.

The cherished youngest child of a prominent Hackensack, New Jersey family, Mary had three older siblings, Forster, Edith and Alice. Her family and loved ones said she never “participated,” but rather dominated her pursuits. She was active in the children's theater and ice skating. Her love of horses followed, along with tennis and golf.

She married George Brewster, also of Hackensack in the late 1940's. George was the son of William John Brewster, the well-known road contractor that built most of the highways in the northern part of the state.

In 1950, pregnant with her first child, William (Bill) Brewster, she began playing golf. By the time her second son Bobby was born four years later, she would be on her way to winning many titles in the Women's New Jersey League. She would also celebrate eight consecutive wins as Arcola Country Club champion. Along the way, her third son John would be born in 1962.

Mary wed Bob “Sully” Sullivan in the early 1970's, which brought Bob's children, Jeff and Lynn into the family. Bob and Mary shared a joyous life until Sully's passing a few years ago.

Among Mary's greatest joys were her grandsons William (Billy), Matthew and Patrick Brewster. William and his wife Beata gifted her with three great-grandchildren Harry, Teddy and Warren. She was finally blessed with the gift of a girl, Sophia Emma by Patrick and his wife, Maria Garrahan Brewster.

It's difficult not to think of Mary and her Thoroughbreds. For over 35 years, she bred and raced under the name of Sullimar Stable, in some of the most famous venues including Churchill Downs, Saratoga, Belmont Park and Gulfstream Park, to name a few.

In lieu of flowers please consider donations to Old Friends in Lexington, Kentucky.

The powerhouse partnership of Repole and St Elias Stables will send out $450,000 FTKOCT purchase SASSINESS (Uncle Mo) in this turf maiden. A half to Canadian Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old colt Up With the Birds (Stormy Atlantic) as well as 9-time winner, SW Speightsong (Speightstown), the filly also claims three other winning half-siblings. This is the female line of Canadian champion older mare, GISW Wilderness Song (Wild Again), whose own half-sister Sound the Fanfare (Vice Regent) produced a line of no less than 15 black-type earners beneath her. In the barn of Todd Pletcher, Sassiness comes in on the back of a steady work tab at Palm Meadows after shipping in from New York. She will break from the rail with Irad Ortiz Jr. in the irons. TJCIS PPs

Heavily favored Neptune's Storm ran to the betting in Saturday's $70,000 Lure Stakes at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., as the 5-year-old Stormy Atlantic gelding accelerated nicely off the turn for home en route to a methodical neck victory under Flavien Prat. Trained by Peter Miller, Neptune's Storm got one mile on turf in 1:35.49.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

A close second to pacesetter Lambeau to the far turn, Neptune's Storm drew alongside mid-way around the far turn, and with three-sixteenths of a mile to run, there was little doubt he'd deliver the mail, although Prat stayed busy late to keep him focused as he kept runner-up Order and Law at bay close to home.

“We had a good trip,” said Prat, who along with Miller registered his second win on the day. “He was traveling well and when I asked him turning for home, he kicked on well. When he went by that horse (Lambeau), he messed around a bit. He's an old man, he knows what he's doing.”

Most recently ninth against much tougher competition going a mile and one quarter on turf in the Grade 2 John Henry Turf Classic here on Oct. 2, Neptune's Storm was off at 1-2 in a field of six 3-year-olds and up and paid $3.00, $2.60, and $2.20.

“I think Flavien did a great job getting him out in the clear,” said Miller. “When Edwin (Maldonado, aboard Lambeau) slowed it down…, I thought well, we have no excuses. He tried to pull himself up a little bit the last eighth of a mile, but Flavien stayed busy enough and we got it done.”

Owned by CYBT, Saul Gervitz, Lynn Gitomer, Mike Goetz, Michael Nentwig, and Daniel Weiner, Neptune's Storm also relished a return to a flat mile as he registered his sixth win from 12 tries at the distance. With the winner's share of $44,880, Neptune's Storm, a two-time graded stakes winner, increased his earnings to $981,865.

Ridden by Abel Cedillo, Order and Law rallied from off the pace to make it close late as he finished three-quarters of a length in front of Lambeau. Off at 10-1, he paid $6.20 and $4.00.

Lambeau finished a length clear of second choice Majestic Eagle and paid $5.00 to show while off at 12-1.

Fractions on the race were :23.12, :47.66, 1:12.17, and 1:23.80.

Prat would go to notch his third win of the day in the eighth race aboard the Richard Baltas-trained Barbwire and appeared poised to get his fourth win of the afternoon aboard early favorite Urban in the ninth and final race.

First post time for a nine-race card on Sunday is at 1 p.m.

Neptune's Storm, a versatile son of prolific turf sire Stormy Atlantic, returns to a distance he fancies—one mile on grass—in next Saturday's $70,000 Lure Stakes for three-year-olds and up at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The bay gelding is coming off an eventful ninth-place finish in the Grade 2 John Henry Turf Championship at a mile and a quarter, the longest route ever attempted in his 23 career starts.

“A mile is a better distance for him,” said trainer Peter Miller, alluding to the tractable campaigner's record of five wins, one second, and one third over that venue.

Leading rider Flavien Prat, who won the restricted Wickerr Stakes on Neptune's Storm at a mile on Del Mar's turf course July 18, will be back aboard.

“He's a nice horse that tries hard,” said Miller, who has had Neptune's Storm for his last four races, the gelding having previously been trained by Richard Baltas and earlier Bill Morey.

The Arthur Appleton homebred won six of his 15 starts, including two stakes, and earned $148,126 before retiring to stud at Bridlewood Farm in his home state of Florida. He stood his first three seasons there before moving to Hill 'n' Dale in Kentucky.

The 27-year-old stallion is responsible for 109 black-type winners and 48 graded winners. His eight Grade I/Group 1 winners include champion and two-time GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint S. winner Stormy Liberal; Canadian Horse of the Year Up With the Birds; and Sovereign Award winner El Tormenta.

A prolific sire of stakes winners, he averaged 12 stakes winners a year for ten straight years.

Raced in the colors of Arthur Appleton, Stormy Atlantic retired to Bridlewood Farm where he stood his first three years at stud. He is the sire of champions Up With the Birds ($1,870,376), Stormy Liberal ($2,212,580), El Tormenta ($816,106), Stormy Antarctic ($946,832), Conquest Typhoon ($759,449), Leonnatus Anteas ($600,074), Maritimer ($362,835), Storm Allied ($229,114), Dixie Wave, etc. and Grade 1 Winners Get Stormy ($1,606,812), Stormy Lucy ($851,700), Stormello ($700,100), Next Question ($424,391), Victor Security, etc..

By the time a stallion has established himself at stud, his fee is usually determined by performance, not the hype that surrounds new horses when they first enter stud. There are, of course, many ways to measure performance, including progeny earnings (which determines placement on the General Sires list), percent of black-type winners to named foals, quality of runners, number of Grade l winners, etc.

There are seven thoroughly proven stallions that will stand for $150,000 or more in North America in 2021, and these elite horses–Into Mischief ($225,000), Tapit ($185,000), Uncle Mo ($175,000), Curlin ($175,000), Medaglia d’Oro ($150,000), War Front ($150,000), and Quality Road ($150,000)–more than make the grade whichever way you slice and dice statistics. For instance, this select group sires black-type winners from named foals at rates of between 7% to 12% (see accompanying charts), which is the gold standard nowadays in the era of big books. [Note: Younger stallions will have lower percentages because their 2-year-old crops will be a larger percentage of the whole.]

Each year as the breeding season rolls around, a dwindling number of smaller owner-breeders frequently ask us at Werk Thoroughbred Consultants to recommend the best proven stallions standing for $15,000 or less. These people, who once made up a larger percentage of owners, need sires with track records, because they race what they breed and have no room for error. A shiny new horse at $15,000 is unproven and too much of a gamble for them, whereas that same first-year horse might well be the choice for a commercial breeder shopping in that price range. It just so happens, however, that the types of stallions best suited for small homebreeders are inexpensively priced these days, not because they lack performance but because they tend to be old and are mostly ignored by a large swath of folks who breed primarily to sell. And it’s the young stallions that sell.

Old stallions, like old people, tend to be underappreciated in a climate that rewards youth.

In fact, older proven stallions that aren’t elite are frequently priced lower than they should be if performance itself were the sole criteria for fee determination, but with them it’s not. They are simply not fashionable, even if they once were.

For those of you who breed to race, I’ve listed in another chart 10 favorite older stallions that will stand next year for $15,000 or less, and they were chosen primarily because they satisfy two criteria aside from my preferences for them: they are (or were last year) ranked on TDN‘s General Sires List; and they get a minimum of 5% black-type winners from named foals, which is a rate close enough to rub shoulders with some of the elite sires standing for $150,000 or more, but at a significantly lower fee that makes them both attractive and affordable for homebreeders. This group can get you a horse good enough to play with the big boys. There are a few others I could have included–my apologies–but didn’t for space considerations.

Here they are by descending stud fee; statistics are for the Northern Hemisphere:

Midnight Lute ($15,000) – This son of Real Quiet at Hill ‘n’ Dale is ranked #12 on the General Sires List, which puts him ahead of both War Front and Quality Road this year, and note also that he’s one of the younger horses in this group with nine crops of racing age. He gets 5% black-type winners from named foals and has demonstrated the ability to sire runners of the highest class, such as Eclipse Award winner Midnight Bisou, one of the best fillies of her generation. Altogether, he’s sired 33 black-type winners and four Grade l winners, including 2020 Gamely S. winner Keeper Ofthe Stars.

Lemon Drop Kid ($15,000) – Through 17 crops of racing age, this well-bred son of Kingmambo has sired 7% black-type winners from foals, the same as his mate Quality Road at Lane’s End. Lifetime, he has 96 black-type winners, including nine Grade l winners, and he’s ranked #44 on the General Sires List this year with such horses as Canadian classic winner Belichick, Glll Ontario Derby winner Field Pass, and 7-year-old French Group 2 winner Red Verdon. In Japan, he’s represented by Godolphin-owned 2-year-old Lemon Pop, who won a non-black-type Kentucky Derby points race on Nov. 28 at Tokyo after winning his debut before that. Though he gets top-level turf and all-weather runners, his daughter Lemons Forever won the Grade l Kentucky Oaks on dirt and has since become a Kentucky Broodmare of the Year.

Mineshaft ($15,000) – A sire of 51 black-type winners through 14 crops–six at Grade l level, including $3.3 million earner Effinex and successful Darby Dan sire Dialed In–he stands at Lane’s End alongside Lemon Drop Kid and is a son of A.P. Indy. He’s at #55 on the General Sires List and is represented this year by Glll Canadian Derby winner Real Grace in what for him is a slow year. He gets 5% black-type winners from foals.

Sky Mesa ($12,500) – This son of Pulpit has sired 73 black-type winners and four Grade l winners through 14 crops, and it’s notable that he’s also the sire of three Canadian champions that aren’t on his list of Grade l winners. Last year, his 2-year-old daughter Perfect Alibi won the Gl Spinaway S., and this year he’s represented by two 3-year-old black-type winners, both of them graded placed. He gets 7% black-type winners from foals, is ranked #66 on the General Sires List, and stands at Three Chimneys.

Stormy Atlantic ($10,000) – The elder statesman of this group, he’s a son of Storm Cat at Hill ‘n’ Dale with 19 crops of racing age. Throughout his career, he’s maintained a 7% rate of black-type winners to foals and altogether has so far sired 103 black-type winners and seven Grade l winners (eight, if you count one in Argentina). His gelded son Stormy Liberal won the Gl Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint twice and was an Eclipse Award-winning turf male, while in Canada he’s had three champion juveniles and Horse of the Year Up With the Birds, also a Grade l winner in the U.S. Among his top performers this year are Grade ll winner Big Runnuer, a 5-year-old; Grade lll winner Neptune’s Storm, a 4-year-old who won a Grade ll race last year; and 7-year-old Stormy Antarctic, a previous Group 2 winner who was second in the G1 Prix d’Ispahan in France in July. Though he’s unranked on the General Sires List in 2020 (he was ranked last year), he consistently gets sound and durable runners with a high degree of class.

Midshipman ($7,500) – This son of Unbridled’s Song at Darley is the youngest horse here with only seven crops of racing age – the same as Quality Road. He’s #47 on the General Sires List and to date is represented by 28 black-type winners in the Northern Hemisphere, a rate of 6% to foals. Though he doesn’t have a NH Grade l winner yet, he has three in Brazil, one of which, Royal Ship (Brz), is Grade ll-placed in California this year. His leading earner to date is Grade lll winner and Grade l-placed Lady Shipman ($902,387), whose son Golden Pal won the Gll Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint this year.

Mizzen Mast ($7,500) – Based at Juddmonte, this son of Cozzene has eight Grade l winners to his credit (nine, if you include another in Peru) from 60 black-type winners, for a rate of 6% black-type winners from foals. One, Flotilla, is a Gl Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner and a French classic winner, taking the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at three. Another, Full Mast, is a Group 1 winner at two in France, while Sea Defence (also known as Giant Treasure) won a Group 1 at five in Hong Kong. His best-known runner, the mare Mizdirection, twice won the Gl Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, and in California he’s had the winners of such races as the Gl Hollywood Derby at 10 furlongs on turf; the Gl Charles Whittingham Memorial at 10 furlongs on turf; and the Gl Hollywood Gold Cup at 10 furlongs on all-weather, among other prestigious races. Yes, he’s a turf sire with his best runners, but note that his daughter Sailor’s Valentine won the Gl Ashland S. at Keeneland on dirt. He’s #74 on the General Sires List.

Silent Name (Jpn) (C$7,500) – This son of Sunday Silence stands in Canada at Adena Springs and is represented by 27 black-type winners, or 7% from foals, and he’s #83 on the General Sires List. He doesn’t have a Grade l winner yet in the Northern Hemisphere (he has one in Brazil), but his graded winners include several who have placed at the highest level, including Grade ll winners Silentio and Fanticola, plus listed winner Mr. Online. His current runners are headed by Grade ll winner Silent Poet, a 5-year-old.

Freud ($6,500) – A Storm Cat brother to Giant’s Causeway, he’s a New York-based sire at Sequel with enough proven form nationally to take him out of the regional ranks, though he’s a must-use sire for the lucrative restricted program in New York. The sire of 55 black-type winners and four Grade l winners (plus an additional three in Argentina) through 16 crops, he gets 6% black-type winners from foals. His best include Gl Cigar Mile H. winner Sharp Azteca, now at stud at Three Chimneys. Freud isn’t ranked on the General Sires List this year, but he was last year.

Include ($5,000) – This son of Broad Brush at Airdrie is responsible for 45 black-type winners through 15 crops, including five Grade l winners (plus another five bred in Argentina), and he’s ranked #98 on the General Sires List. He gets 6% black-type winners to foals and has a notable bias for fillies: all five of his top-level winners are fillies, headed by millionaire Panty Raid. If you included his five Group 1 winners from Argentina, nine of the 10 are fillies. His top current runner, 3-year-old Grade ll winner Sconsin, also is a filly, but he does have champion Canadian juvenile colt Riker and Grade lll winner and Grade l-placed All Included among a smaller group of accomplished males.

A new chapter begins for Hill 'n' Dale as the stallions take up stud duty at Xalapa Farm just outside of Paris, Ky.

The 13-strong stallion roster, led by stalwart breed-shapers Curlin and Kitten's Joy, arrived a week ago to the newly renovated and restored 1,400-acre stallion station and nursery.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“We are aware of the pressures on the market due to the uncertain climate we find ourselves in,” said John G. Sikura, president of Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa. “Hill 'n' Dale will once again look to be an industry leader by offering exceptional value in its entire roster. We are all in this together and together we will grow stronger as an industry.

“There are two stallions on the roster in particular who embody our effort to provide exceptional value in these challenging times,” Sikura continued. “Maclean's Music is emerging as an important young sire. Jackie's Warrior has been described as the best two year old in the country. He is yet another example of his sire's ability to produce an elite runner. In addition, Violence who has led virtually every category since his runners hit the track is the co-leading sire of Grade 1 winners with the likes of Into Mischief. His future remains bright. I repeat, we are all in this together.”

Friday’s Insights features the first foal of dual Arc heroine Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}).

12.10 Chantilly, Cond, €27,000, 2yo, 6fT
Le Haras de La Gousserie’s €62,000 Arqana August bargain buy SEALIWAY (FR) (Galiway {Ire}) posted one of France’s leading freshman performances when impressing with a two-length debut success, defeating two subsequent wide-margin winners, over this distance at Saint-Cloud last month for the Frederic Rossi/Pierre-Charles Boudot axis. With the presence of Scuderia Micolo’s Giulio Cesare (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}) in this straight dash, turfistes will have an early opportunity to compare collateral form with juvenile benchmark Livachope (Fr) (Goken {Fr}). The homebred bay, himself the winner of a form-franked maiden on debut at this venue last month, was six-lengths adrift of that sensation in last Sunday’s Listed Prix La Fleche.

1.20 Chantilly, Debutantes, €20,000, 3yo, 10fT
QOUS (FR) (Dubawi {Ire}) is the first foal out of the remarkable dual G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}). Andre Fabre is charged with the care of Al Shaqab’s February-foaled bay, whose opponents include His Highness The Aga Khan’s Ashim (Fr) (Stormy Atlantic), an Alain de Roye-Dupre-trained son of Ashiyla (Fr) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) who was fourth in the 2010 G1 Prix Vermeille.

1.35 Tipperary, Mdn, €14,000, 2yo, c/g, 5fT
SWISS ACE (GB) (Kingman {GB}) cost 400,000gns at the Tattersalls October Book 1 Sale and is a half to the four black-type performers Swiss Diva (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), Swiss Spirit (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), Swiss Dream (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Swiss Franc (GB) (Mr. Greeley) out of the classy sprinter Swiss Lake (Indian Ridge {Ire}). Aidan O’Brien introduces the February-foaled bay against seven rivals.
