“They told me (about the chance for No. 1,000) in the paddock, I had no idea. If I'd have known that, he's a jinx, I'd have put someone else on the horse,” Miyadi said, joking. Miyadi followed it up with:

“No, he's a good kid. He started working for me when he was a boy. His dad worked for me and didn't want him to be a jockey, and I respected that. But here we are 1,000 wins later. I know the whole family – mom, dad, sisters, brothers – it's a family affair.”

Even so, don't even think about putting Miyadi in the sentimentalist category.

“I've never given him a compliment after he wins a race for me, and that rule still stands,” Miyadi said.

Frey got his 999th win on November 12 but had zero wins last weekend and a runner-up finish in Friday's first race before cracking the milestone by taking Tizlightning, a 2-year-old Lori Gallegos California homebred, wire to wire and narrowly holding off the late charge of Bright Leaf and apprentice Emily Ellingwood at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

“It means a lot,” Frye said. “It was a long road, but hopefully the next thousand will come a little quicker. It means a lot to win it for Steve. I talked to my dad a week or so ago and he (remarked) about how great it would be to get it for Steve. It's pretty cool.”

Frey put Tizlightning on the lead out of the gate and stayed there throughout. He had to nurse the tiring horse through the last sixteenth of a mile but got it done. The bay son of Stanford is owned and was bred by Lori Gallegos and is trained by Steve Miyadi, a primarily Northern California-based trainer who had used Frey hundreds of times previously in the Bay Area. The winner paid $4.80 as the favorite in the starter optional claiming sprint after running six furlongs in 1:11.40.

The 29-year-old Frey, a Northern California native who has ridden at tracks from coast to coast, appears to have found a riding home in Southern California this past year and his recent marriage and the birth of his daughter have given him even more reason to stay in one spot.

Frey was the Eclipse Award winner as the nation's top apprentice in 2011. His career has started and stopped several times due to injuries, but he's riding in fine form now and has become one of the steady members of the Southern California colony.

Frey has followed in the footsteps of his late grandfather, Paul Frey, who was a talented jockey who rode in both California and Washington State.

“I feel great joy in this win,” Frey said afterwards in the winner's circle. “I was asked about the fuss of the pressure of reaching a milestone, but I really didn't feel that. I'm just real happy I got it done.”

Owned and bred by Nick Alexander, Lieutenant Dan sat a close third early to pacesetter Charmaine's Mia, who was pressed to her immediate outside by Law Abidin Citizen.  Hand-ridden over the dirt crossing at the top of the stretch, Lieutenant Dan cruised to the lead and was never seriously challenged through the lane.

Off as the 5-2 favorite in a field of nine 3-year-olds and up, Lieutenant Dan, who notched his third consecutive victory today, paid $7.00, $3.80 and $3.20. The 5-year-old gelding by Alexander's stallion Grazen has now won eight of 16 career starts.

“It was so unexpected,” said Alexander of the horse's growing resume. “I think he was the seventh or eighth foal out of the mare (Excusabull), and the first seven did nothing so, we had very low expectations for this horse and he just continues to exceed them. He just loves to win.

“I love that turf course,” Alexander added. “We have always excelled on it and Grazen babies just seem to love that distance and that downhill. It is so beautiful.”

“He's a pretty fast horse and he's very versatile,” said Franco. “He broke sharp like he always does and put me in a nice spot where if they were going too slow, I could have gone and if they were going too fast, I could have sat back.

“All in all, he was the one taking me through the trip. At the end of the race he kept on going. I heard some noises of people coming but he never slowed down or waited for anybody.

“It was a great feeling to ride the hill again, it is definitely different than any other race or surface,” added Franco. “You have a lot of fun out there, especially when you have a horse like this one.”

Highly accomplished Snapper Sinclair, who shipped in from Churchill Downs for Steve Asmussen, kept to his task from off the pace and finished second in a solid effort, finishing a neck in front of the Bob Hess, Jr. Chaos Theory.  Off as the 7-2 second choice, he paid $4.40 and $3.20.

Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Chaos Theory was off at 36-1 and paid $10.80 to show while finishing a half length better than a late closing Gregorian Chant.

Fractions on the race were 21.61, 42.95 and 1:05.66.

The Eddie D is named for legendary retired Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Delahoussaye.

The nine-day season was highlighted by stakes victories by talented 2-year-old Enbarr, a first off the claim score by Manhattan Up, and a gate-to-wire victory by Livingmybestlife, a $50,000 claim earlier in the year at Oaklawn Park.

The 32-year-old Cedillo finished the LACF meet with 18 victories, eight more than closest pursuer Kyle Frey. Cedillo also led the standings during the 2020 LACF Winter season.

Cedillo became the first jockey to win four races in a day twice at Los Alamitos. He first accomplished the feat Sept. 15, 2019, then matched it with a quadruple Sept. 25.

The other riders who have won four races in a day since daytime thoroughbred racing returned to Los Alamitos in 2014 are Drayden Van Dyke (July 6, 2014), Edwin Maldonado (Dec. 13, 2015), Kent Desormeaux (April 23, 2016), Assael Espinoza (Sept. 15, 2018), and Jorge I. Velez (Sept. 22, 2019).

Miller finished the LACF season with seven wins, one more than Steve Miyadi. Hall of Famer Bob Baffert was third with five. The title was the sixth Miller has either shared or won outright at Los Alamitos since daytime thoroughbred racing returned in 2014.

A son of Brody's Cause owned by Baoma Corporation, Enbarr rallied past stablemate Montebello in the final sixteenth of a mile to win the $75,000 Capote Sept. 18 under Van Dyke, giving Baffert a 1-2 finish.

Taken for $80,000 by trainer Jonathan Wong for Brent Malmstrom's KAM Racing Stable, Manhattan Up, a 5-year-old Street Boss gelding, responded to the addition of blinkers in capturing the $100,000 Los Alamitos Special Sept. 19. He was ridden by Tiago Pereira.

Livingmybestlife, a 3-year-old daughter of The Big Beast, has now won three of five since being claimed by John Sadler for Hronis Racing out of her April 8 debut, when she finished second. She was never seriously challenged in her local debut, defeating Stella Noir and three others in the $75,000 Lucky Spell Sept. 24.

The meet's other stakes winners were Loud Mouth – via disqualification – in the E.B. Johnston, and Samurai Charm, who earned her fifth consecutive victory leading throughout in the Dark Mirage.

In terms of business, all-sources handle for the LACF season showed a gain of 18% over comparable days in 2019. There was no September meet at Los Alamitos in 2020.

“While participation as the entry box could have been better, we very much appreciate those owners and trainers who did participate,'' said F. Jack Liebau, vice president of the Los Alamitos Racing Association. “The (handle) increase was more than 10% of what we had aggressively estimated and was attributable to an incredible 65% increase in advance deposit wagering in Southern California.

“We're looking forward to our upcoming Winter meet where purses will be substantially higher.''

Daytime thoroughbred racing will return to Los Alamitos for the seven-day Winter season Friday, Dec. 3.

Racing will be conducted through Sunday, Dec. 12. The Winter meet will be highlighted by a pair of graded races for 2-year-olds – the $300,000 Grade 1 Starlet for fillies Saturday, Dec. 4, and the $200,000 Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity Saturday, Dec. 11. Both will be run at 1 1/16 miles.

The quadruple by Cedillo, 32, clinched his second local riding title. The Guatemalan-born jockey, who led the 2020 Los Angeles County Fair Winter meet, has 15 victories through the first eight days, six more than closest pursuer Kyle Frey, who has only five scheduled mounts Sunday, the final day of the LACF season.

Making his first start beyond seven furlongs, Risk and Reward, a 3-year-old Frosted colt out of the Indian Charlie mare Shayjolie, took charge early and improved his position from there, eventually prevailing by five lengths over 2-1 second choice Margot's Boy. He completed the mile in 1:35:02 and paid $5.60, $3.20, and $2.40 as the 9-5 choice.

Owned by breeder Speedway Stables LLC and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Risk and Reward is now 2-for-4 with earnings of $75,200. He broke his maiden July 25 at Del Mar, upsetting well-regarded stablemate – and next out graduate – Bobby Bo before showing speed and tiring in his first race vs. winners 27 days later.

Margot's Boy, who was seeking his first win since May 23, 2020, finished 13 lengths clear of 5-2 third choice Willy the Cobbler. The runner-up returned $3.20 and $2.60 while the show price on Willy the Cobbler was $2.40.

Cedillo's other victories Saturday came with Full of Luck in the first, Borkan in the second, and Sauls Call in the sixth.

Sauls Call was one of three wins for trainer Steve Miyadi, doubling his total for the meet and moving him into a tie with Peter Miller for the top spot. Miyadi also tallied with the aforementioned Full of Luck and debuter Tizlightning, who was an impressive winner of the seventh.

Miller is scheduled to run four Sunday – I'm the Boss of Me in the second, Taming the Tigress in the sixth, Gates of Heaven in the ninth, and Sir Flatter in the 10th while Miyadi's representatives are Aristeia in the fifth and first time starters Mary Margaret and Mo Connelly in the eighth.

Racing resumes Sunday. Post time for the start of the 10-race program is 1 p.m.

The main event is the $75,000 Royal Owl Stakes for California bred 2-year-olds at 5 ½ furlongs. Rock N Rye is the even-money favorite on Ed Burgart's morning line. The Royal Owl will go as the seventh race and has a scheduled post time of 4:03 p.m.

The 5-year-old gelding by Alexander's prime stallion, Grazen, shook off pressure early, then cleared late to finish 2 1/4 lengths best in the dash for 3-year-olds and up. He picked up a check for $60,000 for the win and pushed his bankroll to $543,740.

The carryover will be a hefty $145,797 as no tickets were able to isolate six winners for the fourth consecutive racing day.

Three upsets in a row by Next Flight ($26.80) in the sixth, Synthesis ($24.40) and Loud Loud Music ($19.80) in the eighth triggered another carryover.

The Pick 6 will begin in Thursday's fourth race. Post time is 12:30 p.m. and scheduled post time for the fourth is 1:58 p.m. The pool could reach $500,000.

Trainer Steve Miyadi won three of the final four races Sunday with longshots, including 8-1 outsider Loud Loud Music in the $50,500 feature at Los Alamitos.

Unplaced in three previous starts on dirt, the 3-year-old daughter of Tizbud and the Bernstein mare Your Cheatin Heart rallied late to defeat Cheap Cheap Cheap and eight others in the optional claimer for fillies and mares bred or sired in California.

Owned by breeder Nick Alexander and ridden by Abel Cedillo, Loud Loud Music won for the third time in eight starts and the $28,800 payday pushed her earnings to $95,100. She paid $19.80, $7.60 and $5.

Cheap Cheap Cheap, the 7-2 second choice under jockey Flavien Prat, returned $4.60 and $3.40 while finishing 1 ½ lengths in front of 2-1 favorite Habobanero. The show price on Habobanero was $3.20.

Miyadi's other two victories were provided by Next Flight, who returned $26.80 in taking the sixth and first time starter Becca Taylor, also owned by breeder Alexander, who scored a 17-1 surprise in the ninth.

With four days remaining in the Los Angeles County Fair Winter Thoroughbred meet, Juan Hernandez holds an 8-7 lead over Cedillo and apprentice Jessica Pyfer in the jockey standings.

Miyadi has four wins to hold the edge in the trainer's race, one ahead of Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Isidro Tamayo and Jonathan Wong.
