GI Kentucky Derby winner Mage (Good Magic) is owned by OGMA Investments, LLC, Ramiro Restrepo, Sterling Racing LLC and CMNWLTH, but when he tackles a tough group of opponents in Saturday's GI Haskell S. he will be running for more than just the four ownership groups. Restrepo announced Friday that, starting with the Haskell, he will be donating a portion of Mage's earnings to the Dwoskin Children's Cancer Research Fund at the University of Miami's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The story was first reported by the Daily Racing Form's Mike Welsch.

The fund was named in honor of Steve Dwoskin, a veteran trainer on the South Florida circuit, who estimates he has donated $15 million to cancer related causes.

Though a successful trainer, much of Dwoskin's income has come from a career selling auto parts.

“What Ramiro is doing, it's unbelievable,” the 80-year-old trainer said. “It's a really beautiful gesture on his part. This is a good story. I think a lot of people will see this and they'll all be rooting for Mage.”

Dwoskin started donating to cancer-related charities 22 years ago after his father and brother died of the disease. About eight years ago, he started to focus on cancer research for children. With Dwoskin's help, the Dwoskin Children's Cancer Research Fund at the University of Miami's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center was started.

“I met this woman whose husband was a big doctor down here,” Dwoskin said. “She lost an 8-year-old son to cancer. I saw it on TV, on channel 7, and I went to meet her. I just realized I have a calling. If somebody is 80 or 90-years-old and dies of cancer I can handle that. When someone who is 8-years-old dies, I can't handle it. I just don't understand it.”

Restrepo said he had long admired Dwoskin for his work and for his philanthropy.

“Steve has been a local, Florida horseman for many, many years and is real supportive of the South Florida racing industry,” Restrepo said. “He's also a huge benefactor to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami. I am a Miami alumni. I have lost two family members to cancer, my grandfather and an uncle on my father's side. So I am sensitive to that disease. There's a synergy between the University of Miami, Steve Dwoskin and the disease itself which has hit close to home for me. That all came together. I met with Steve and some of the fundraisers and chair members over at the University of Miami on the pediatric cancer side. We chatted about working with each other. This opportunity came up and I was more than happy to contribute. Mage is a horse that has many followers and it's nice to be able to use his platform to create awareness for what Steve has been doing. There is such a depth to his commitment. Steve has donated so much money toward the pediatric cancer research foundation. When you sit down with him and hear it from the horse's mouth it's pretty impressive.”

The Florida HBPA held its annual General Nominating Meeting and Awards Dinner Saturday night at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., with nearly 100 owners, trainers, jockeys, grooms, and racing executives in attendance at Ten Palms. The guest speaker was the new President and CEO of the NTRA, Tom Rooney. The evening closed with the annual FHBPA Awards Ceremony. Host Ron Nicoletti announced the winners in nine categories.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“Each year, the Florida HBPA recognizes the horses that shine not just during the Championship Meet, but year-round in South Florida,” FHBPA President Stephen Screnci said. “All of our Champions competed at Gulfstream during the Royal Palm and Flamingo Festival meets that run from April through November.

“We also changed it up a little this year to honor one of our owners or trainers not just for their accomplishments on the racetrack, but also for their contributions to our community,” Screnci added. “Steve Dwoskin is our first FHBPA 'Person of Distinction,' and we couldn't have found a worthier candidate for the award.”

An owner and trainer in South Florida since 1969, Dwoskin has long been a partner with Sylvester Comprehensive Care Center, a part of the University of Miami Health System (UHealth). A generous donation to Sylvester helped to fund the Dwoskin Proton Therapy Center, which began treating patients with advanced and precise radiation therapy last September.

He is also the owner/trainer of this year's Champion Older Filly/Mare Choose Joy.

Dwoskin, who lost his father and brother to cancer, was emotional when he said, “I can handle most anything, but I couldn't handle it when my brother and my father got cancer. When I first got involved [with Sylvester], it was strictly for research, trying to find a cure for cancer. But I got pretty strong there, and I started helping people, friends, and family. If anyone from the horse industry ever needs help, I'm here for you. Helping people – that's what makes me feel really good.”

The complete list of the 2021 FHBPA Champions is:

Person of Distinction: Steve Dwoskin

Two-Year-Old Colt/Gelding: Octane (Arindel, Owner; Carlos David, Trainer)

Two-Year-Old Filly: Outfoxed (LNJ Foxwoods, Owner; Bill Mott, Trainer)

Three-Year-Old Colt: Papetu (Magic Stables LLC, Owner; Antonio Sano, Trainer)

Three-Year-Old Filly: Con Lima (Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Joseph F. Graffeo, Eric Nikolaus Del Toro, and Troy Johnson, Owner; Todd Pletcher, Trainer)

Older Horse/Gelding: Miles Ahead (David Melin, Leon Ellman, and Laurie Plesa, Owner; Eddie Plesa, Trainer)

Older Filly/Mare: Choose Joy (Steve Dwoskin, Owner/Trainer)

Turf Horse/Gelding: Warrior's Pride (Just for Fun Stables, Owner; Antonio Cioffi, Trainer)

Turf Filly/Mare: Shifty She (Chris Pallas and Harvey Rothenberg, Owner; Saffie Joseph Jr., Trainer)

The Dinner also featured the nominations for the 2022 FHPBA Election, which will be announced next week.

Starship Stables and trainer Steve Dwoskin's Starship Bonita rallied to capture Saturday's $75,000 Sheer Drama Stakes at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., winning for the first time in 10 starts since her most recent victory in the 2018 edition of the same race.

The Sheer Drama, a seven-furlong stakes for Florida-bred fillies and mares, headlined Saturday's 12-race program that also featured the $60,000 North Bay Village, a mile overnight handicap for fillies and mares on turf.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Starship Bonita, who won two legs of the lucrative 2017 Florida Sire Stakes series, posted a 2 ¾-length victory in the 2018 Sheer Drama before her very promising career was compromised by a series of long breaks in her racing schedule the next few seasons. Sent to post at 30-1, the 6-year-old daughter of Gone Astray returned to form Saturday, stalking the early pace before taking the lead in the stretch and holding off stablemate Starship Nala by three-quarters of a length. Pacesetter Thissmytime held well to finish third, another three-quarters of a length back.

Ridden by Jesus Rios, Starship Bonita ran seven furlongs in 1:22.92.

Fresh off a stakes victory with Choose Joy in Sunday's Village of Biscayne Park, owner/trainer Steve Dwoskin is hoping that Starship Nterprise can take him back in the Gulfstream Park winner's circle in Saturday's $75,000 Miss Gracie, a 7 ½-furlong turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

The daughter of Honor Code, who had gone winless in her first eight starts, has emerged as a very promising stakes performer during the Spring/Summer Meet in her last three starts.

“She's a lot like Choose Joy,” said Dwoskin, who owns Starship Nterprise with long-time client Starship Stables. “She's also a late bloomer.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Unlike Choose Joy, strictly a turf sprinter, Starship Nterprise has done her best running going long, both on turf and dirt.

Starship Enterprise was on the board in five of her first eight starts but didn't break through until winning a $50,000 maiden claiming race at a mile on turf May 23 at Gulfstream. The Kentucky-bred 3-year-old filly came right back to pull off a 33-1 upset victory in the Martha Washington at a mile on turf. She went on to show versatility in the off-the-turf Monroe, a mile stakes in which she led late before falling a neck short of holding off Key Biscayne, who's been competitive in Grade 1 and 2 races.

“I ran her in a claimer for $50,000 and she got her confidence there,” Dwoskin said. “She's working excellent. She worked Saturday very good, and we expect her to run good. She's ready to run.”

Miguel Vasquez, who was victorious aboard Starship Nterprise in the Martha Washington the only time he has ridden her, has the call Saturday.

Karl and Cathi Glassman's Restofthestory is entered to make her turf debut in the Miss Gracie after finishing first, second or third, in seven of eight career starts on dirt. The Eddie Plesa Jr.-trained daughter of Jess's Dream, who finished second in the $400,000 FSS My Dear Girl last year, is coming off a second-place finish in the seven-furlong Azalea.

Hector Berrios has the mount on the Florida-bred filly.

Leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. is represented by three entrants in the Miss Gracie field – Peachtree Stable's Champagne Ivy, Sayjay Racing LLC and Greg Hall's Cultured, and e Five Racing Thoroughbreds' Tik Tok Famous.

Champagne Ivy, who finished fifth in the Martha Washington, is coming off an Aug. 6 maiden special weight score at a mile on turf; Cultured will be making her first start since finishing off the board behind Grade 1 winner Con Lima in the May 1 Honey Ryder; Tik Tok Famous finished eighth in the Martha Washington following a slow start.

Edgard Zayas, Edwin Gonzalez and Emisael Jaramillo will ride Champagne Ivy, Cultured and Tik Tok Famous, respectively.

Philip DiCosmo's Sunshine City, Stephen Screnci's Kate's Kingdom and Clap Embroidery's Frankie's Girl round out the field.

Saturday's 12-race program has a 12:20 p.m. first race post and includes six races scheduled on the turf.

Racing returns to Gulfstream Friday with a guaranteed pool in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 of $600,000.

The Rainbow 6 kicks off with the fifth race, a claiming event for 3-year-olds and up at a mile on the main track. The sequence will include three turf races, a maiden special weight event at six furlongs for 2-year-old fillies, and a $62,500 allowance optional claimer at six furlongs featuring 2020 Gotham (G3) runner-up Untitled, Hutcheson winner Willy Boi, third-place Nashua (G3) finisher Isolate, and Challenger (G3) winner Trophy Chaser, making his first start in 16 months.

First race post is 2 p.m.

The burgeoning turf-sprint star, who conceded between eight and 11 pounds to her five rivals, is a nose and a neck away from being undefeated in her six starts on turf following her length victory in Sunday's five-furlong overnight handicap for fillies and mares.

“She's a late-bloomer,” Dwoskin said. “She's been a different horse since getting on the turf.”

Choose Joy rated off a swift early pace set by Cat's Astray, who set fractions of :21.87 and :43.98 for a half-mile, before staging a three-wide rally into the stretch and drawing clear under Miguel Vasquez.

The 4-year-old daughter of Munnings ran five furlongs on a firm turf in :55.65. Hey High Pockets closed with a rush to finish second, a neck ahead of a tiring Cat's Astray.

Starship Stables and trainer Steve Dwoskin's Starship Nterprise rallied from well off the early pace to score a 33-1 upset victory in Saturday's $75,000 Martha Washington Stakes at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The 3-year-old daughter of Honor Code, who defeated older $50,000 maidens to graduate in her ninth career start last time out, surged between horses in late stretch to win by a neck in the mile turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“I'm very surprised,” said Dwoskin, who opted to run the Kentucky-bred filly in the stakes restricted to 3-year-olds than give her another chance with older fillies and mares. “It was better to go against 3-year-olds than against older horses.”

Starship Nterprise saved ground while settling off an early pace contested by Hana Lima and Karakatsie during fractions of 24.36 and 48.05 seconds for the first half-mile. Karakatsie, the 9-5 favorite ridden by Edwin Gonzalez, moved to the lead entering the stretch with Charges Dropped looming as a danger along the rail. Starship Nterprise, who cut the corner in to the stretch kicked in with a powerful drive between horses to surge late to claim the victory under Miguel Vasquez.

Karakatsie, who finished second behind Con Lima in the May 1 Powder Break Stakes at Gulfstream, held off Charges Drop by a half-length to finish second.

Starship Nterprise ran a mile over a firm turf course in 1:36.74 to notch her second straight victory.

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $100,000 for Saturday's program at Gulfstream Park West.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the third racing day since one lucky ticketholder hit for a $249,204 jackpot Sunday.

The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Saturday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 5-10, kicked off by a full field of $12,500 claimers in Race 5, slated to be run at five furlongs on turf.

A half-brother to Tapit, North America's premier stallion, is scheduled to make his debut in Race 6, a 6 ½-furlong maiden special weight race for 3-year-olds and up. Kidtapit, a 4-year-old son of Super Saver, is the last registered foal of Tap Your Heels, a daughter of Unbridled. Kidtapit is owned and trained by Steven Dwoskin, who is also scheduled to saddle Follow Q T R, a 3-year-old first-time starter by Honor Code. Moonlander, a debuting son of Malibu Moon trained by Todd Pletcher; is also prominent in the eight-horse field.

Jorge Delgado-trained Just Kidding, who finished third in the $150,000 FSS Wildcat Heir last time out, drops back to optional claiming allowance company in Race 7. A pair of recent claims from the Michael Maker barn are among 13 fillies and mares entered in Race 8, scheduled to be contested at 7 ½ furlongs on turf. Act Like Artie, who beat $25,000 claiming maidens last time out, debuts for trainer Darien Rodriguez, while All About Kathern, a daughter of Bodemeister who was claimed for $12,500, is set to make her first start for owner/trainer Mary Eppler. Amador Sanchez-trained La Rusia is the 7-2 morning-line favorite after finishing second to non-winners-of-two $25,000 claimers last time out.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will be closed out by a six-furlong optional claiming allowance for 2-year-old fillies in Race 9 and a six-furlong sprint for a full field of $6,500 claimers. Maker-trained Artie's Rose, who graduated in her second career start and first dirt race at Gulfstream Park West Oct. 10, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite in Race 9, which attracted three other last-out maiden winners. Colossal Storm, who broke his maiden by 15 ½ lengths at Louisiana Downs for trainer Steve Asmussen, will make his first start for owner/trainer Peter Walder in Race 10.

Rohan Crichton in a Zone with Three-Win Day

Trainer Rohan Crichton remained in a zone at Gulfstream Park West, saddling three winners from as many starters on Friday's program.

Crichton visited the winner's circle with Great Sister Diane ($4) in Race 3, Trisomia ($6.60) in Race 4 and Septemberten ($7.40) in Race 8.

The native of Jamaica has saddled nine winners from 21 starters at the Gulfstream Park West meet.
