Longtime Thoroughbred trainer Stanley Hough first retired in 2012, but he was coaxed back into the shed row in 2018 by mentee Hunter Rankin on behalf of Kevin Plank's Sagamore Farm. Hough and Rankin, racing manager and president, respectively, had been rebuilding the Sagamore program since 2015, and there were a couple special 2-year-olds Hough wanted to keep a closer eye on.

One of those was Global Campaign, a half-brother to G1 winner Bolt d'Oro. The colt's career got off to a good start in 2019 with wins in the G3 Peter Pan and the G3 Monmouth Cup, but he really blossomed in 2020 with a victory in the Grade 1 Woodward and a third-place finish in the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic. Global Campaign earned a total of $1,321,080 on the track with six wins from 10 starts.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>
The 4-year-old son of Curlin has since been retired to co-owner WinStar Farm to prepare for a career at stud, however, and Sagamore Farm announced the termination of its horse racing involvement in early November.

Now 72 years old, Hough made the decision to head back into retirement.

“When WinStar decided it was better for the horse to go to stud—because he is being very well received—for me, it was a bittersweet thing, but it helped me make the decision,” Hough told bloodhorse.com. “I still have some horses I own part of and that will go on for a while, but in terms of training, I'm going to let someone else do it. COVID-19 has been hard for everybody, and I've been away from home a lot. I'm not getting any younger, which is obvious, but I decided I would pack it in for good this time.”

Hough's resume at his retirement stands at 2,212 wins from 12,921 starters with total earnings of $47,892,444.

Grade 1 winner Global Campaign, third in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Keeneland Nov. 7, with a career-best 106 Beyer, will not resume training and has been retired, WinStar Farm announced today. Campaigned by Sagamore Farm and WinStar Farm, Global Campaign will stand the 2021 breeding season at WinStar for a fee of $12,500 S&N.

“We considered bringing him back for a final start in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. (G1) because he ran so well in the Breeders' Cup,” said Elliott Walden, WinStar's president, CEO, and racing manager. “He shed his frog in that race and the timing of getting him back into training is not going to work, unfortunately. He has been very popular when people see him, and we are excited about standing him next year.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

The 4-year-old son of Curlin emulated his sire by capturing the Woodward H. (G1) in his start prior to the Breeders' Cup Classic, earning a 104 Beyer in the front-running score for trainer Stanley Hough. The Woodward marked his second straight Graded win following a victory in the Monmouth Cup S. (G3) over the summer. Last year at three, he won the Peter Pan S. (G3), defeating next-out Belmont S. (G1) winner Sir Winston. All told, Global Campaign retires with a record of 10-6-0-2, having amassed earnings of $1,321,080.

A winner from seven furlongs to 1 ¼ miles, Global Campaign is out of the A.P. Indy mare Globe Trot, making him a half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winner Bolt d'Oro and multiple stakes winner Sonic Mule.

Sagamore Farm and WinStar Farm's Global Campaign will stand stud at WinStar next year, but the third place finisher in last weekend's Breeders' Cup Classic could first be pointed to the Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 23, reports drf.com.

The 4-year-old son of Curlin was bred by WinStar out of the A.P. Indy mare Globe Trot, making him the half-brother to Spendthrift sire Bolt d'Oro. Trained by Stanley Hough, Global Campaign won the G3 Peter Pan Stakes as a 3-year-old, and this year won the G3 Monmouth Cup and the G1 Woodward. His record stands at six wins from 10 starts for earnings of $1,321,080.

“The Pegasus is something that's definitely under consideration,” Hunter Rankin, president of Sagamore Farm, told drf.com. Global Campaign will spend the next week or so at WinStar for inspections, then return to Hough's stable.

Sagamore Farm announced a dispersal of all its equine stock last week.

Following the Breeders' Cup World Championships at Keeneland, another horse reported to be under consideration for the 2021 Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park is Belmont Stakes winner and Classic disappointment Tiz the Law.

Grade 1 winner Global Campaign was aboard a van to WinStar Farm Sunday morning with Improbable and Tom's d'Etat, each with plans to enter stud at the Versailles, Ky., farm in 2021. Unlike the others, though, Global Campaign's first steps off the trailer might end up being for a layover instead of a final destination.

Elliott Walden, WinStar's president, CEO, and racing manager, said the 4-year-old Curlin colt will be assessed during his time at the farm, and he could return to the barn of trainer Stanley Hough in seven to 10 days to prepare for a final start in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes on Jan. 23. Though the final decision will be made following the assessment period, Walden said he was “leaning that way” toward sending him back into training.

Global Campaign finished third in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Saturday, capping off a 2020 campaign that has included wins in the G1 Woodward Handicap and G3 Monmouth Stakes. WinStar bred the colt, and owns him in partnership with Sagamore Racing.

<ins data-revive-zoneid=197 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=198 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Walden said Global Campaign's connections entered the Classic with different long-term plans depending on his performance in the race. He also said the early shape of the potential Pegasus field might play well into the upward trajectory of Global Campaign's development.

“If he'd won the Classic, he'd probably been retired, if he'd ran poorly, he'd be retired, but if he ran a good race without winning, we would consider the possibility [of the Pegasus], and that's exactly what happened,” he said. “With Improbable retiring, and I don't know what Authentic's going to do, but he showed himself [in the Classic]. That was a deep, deep Classic field, one of the deepest we've had in a long time. Global Campaign really ran well. Stan Hough told me he was going to run well, told me he was going to outrun his odds.”

Should Global Campaign be given the green light to try for the Pegasus, Walden said he would join Hough's barn wherever he's needed, most likely going to Palm Meadows Training Center in south Florida.

Global Campaign has won six of 10 career starts for earnings of $1,321,080, also including last year's G2 Peter Pan Stakes.

“He's had a big year,” Walden said. “He's won three out of five, with a win in the Woodward and he won going seven-eighths (an optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park on April 25). When he ran the first start of the year in that seven-eighths allowance race, and he ran extremely fast, that's when we said we wanted to stand him, no matter what happens. We made a deal with Kevin [Plank, owner of Sagamore Racing] to do that. We'd owned a piece of him, but we bought up to make that happen.”

Global Campaign's 2021 stud fee is still to be determined.

Saturday was another busy morning for Brad Cox's barn as he worked six of nine contenders including $2-million Distaff (G1) likely favorite Monomoy Girl.

“I hate to sound cliché but it was another awesome morning for all of these horses,” Cox added. “Most of the serious preparation was done last week but these works still matter to make sure each horse is in top shape prior to the event.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid=197 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=198 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Jockey Florent Geroux was aboard Monomoy Girl for her final breeze prior to the Breeders' Cup as she worked alongside $1 million Dirt Mile (GI) contender Owendale. Monomoy Girl was one of six horses Geroux breezed Saturday at Churchill Downs.

“She's a champion mare and really a horse of a lifetime,” Geroux said. “She's a future Hall of Famer with her résumé. The speed figures show she is a little bit faster this year than her 3-year-old year.”

The only remaining Breeders' Cup contenders to work at Churchill Downs are Just Might and Manny Wah. Both will work on Sunday, according to their respective trainers.

Saturday finalized the works for trainer Bret Calhoun's trio of By My Standards, Mr. Money and Silver Dust. Jockey Gabriel Saez worked Allied Racing Stable and Spendthrift Farm's Dirt Mile (G1) contender Mr. Money at 5:30 a.m. (all times Eastern) prior to breezing $6-million Classic (G1) hope By My Standards at 5:45 a.m. Jockey Adam Beschizza worked Tom Durant's Dirt Mile contender Silver Dust at 7:30 a.m.

“(By My Standards and Mr. Money) both worked awesome this morning,” Saez said. “By My Standards was supposed to be in about 1:01 but I couldn't slow him down. He's just doing really, really good. Mr. Money got over the ground great again, too.”

By My Standards was one of four Classic contenders to work on Saturday. Another was Sagamore Farm and WinStar Farm's $500,000 Woodward (G1) winner Global Campaign. Trained by Stan Hough, Global Campaign returned from a nine-month freshening in April at Gulfstream Park and sports a 3-for-4 record in 2020.

“In the Fountain of Youth he really tore his quarter as bad as I've seen it,” Hough said. “That set up for a series of foot problems after that. He's very talented and I think we're getting to a place where he can really show it.”

Other Classic contenders to work Saturday were Charles Fipke's longshot Title Ready and G M B Racing's Grade I winner Tom's d'Etat.

“We are ready to go for the big money,” trainer Dallas Stewart said of Title Ready. “He's a longshot but he will be coming with his run. We'll see what happens but we'll be ready.”

Star 3-year-old filly Swiss Skydiver was one of three Kenny McPeek trainees to work Saturday morning. Jockey Robby Albardo was once again aboard for the work on the Preakness (GI) winner. She pre-entered both the Distaff and Classic and McPeek is leaning to the Distaff barring any major defections in the Classic.

Entries for all 14 Breeders' Cup races will take place on Monday. There are 43 horses from Churchill Downs expected to be entered. All horses are required to be on the grounds Wednesday. Many local contenders are set to arrive on Monday including Cox's nine-horse squad.

Sagamore Farm and WinStar Farm's Global Campaign earned a 104 Beyer Speed Figure for his frontrunning score in Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000 Woodward Handicap at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Trained by Stanley Hough and forwardly ridden by Luis Saez, Global Campaign was tracked throughout by Juddmonte Farms' regally-bred multiple graded-stakes winning millionaire Tacitus through splits of 24.65, 48.89 and 1:11.90 on the fast main track.

A busy Saez kept to task on Global Campaign late in the final turn and repelled the challenge from Tacitus to secure a 1 3/4-length win. He covered 10 furlongs in a final time of 2:01.40

<ins data-revive-zoneid=197 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=198 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“It was quite a performance. I'm so proud of him,” said Hough. “He came out of the race great and will be coming back to Churchill Downs later this morning.”

A six-time winner from nine starts with purse earnings of $781,080, Global Campaign made the grade in the 2019 Grade 3 Peter Pan at Belmont Park and entered the Woodward from a frontrunning score on July 18 over Math Wizard in the Grade 3 Monmouth Cup.

Hough said Global Campaign overcame some minor issues and is now living up to his early promise.

“He's had a lot of issues with nagging kinds of things, but at Monmouth I think he turned the corner,” said Hough. “He's been doing very well and his feet are better. We had a little problem with his feet after Monmouth with the shedding of a 'frog' [located on the underside of a horse's hoof], but that happens at some racetracks. For him, it's something that happens, but we were able to shoe him regularly for this race and he went into it fine.”

Hough said Global Campaign will now train up to the Grade 1, $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic on November 7 at Keeneland Race Course.

“We're hoping if everything stays good that we can take him to the Breeders' Cup,” said Hough. “We have 60 days, so the timing is good.”

By Curlin, Global Campaign is out of the late A.P. Indy mare Globe Trot, who passed away from complications giving birth to Global Campaign. Globe Trot produced three foals including multiple stakes winner and multiple graded-stakes placed Sonic Mule and multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Bolt d'Oro, who now stands at Spendthrift Farm.

Hough said Global Campaign has the credentials to be a successful stallion.

“I think Global Campaign is a really talented horse and with that pedigree, as far as being a stud goes, I don't think there's anybody more qualified than him,” said Hough.

Hough said a more mature Global Campaign will hopefully be a handful for his opponents, rather than himself, in the Breeders' Cup.

“He's been his own worst enemy in the past,” said Hough. “As a young horse he could be a little playful and some of the things that bothered him, he caused himself. But he's maturing, so I'm hoping he has at least one more good one in him.”

It might have seemed that the Woodward Handicap would finally be the opportunity for favored Tacitus to claim a coveted Grade 1 victory, but Global Campaign had other plans. Under Luis Saez, Global Campaign took command out of the gate, closely tracked by Tacitus and never looked back. The big gray mounted a challenge in the turn but by midstretch was all out and unable to quite catch Global Campaign, who won the 1 1/4 mile contest with his ears up in a time of 2:01.40.

Stanley Hough trains the 4-year-old colt for Sagamore Farm and WinStar Farm.

Tacitus settled for second, while Prioritize was third. Global Campaign's final wining margin was 1 3/4 lengths.

Global Campaign, who was the second betting choice, paid $7.80 to win.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Global Campaign came to the Woodward off a win in the G3 Monmouth Cup on July 18. He also has a win in the 2019 G3 Peter Pan to his credit. He is the son of Curlin and A.P. Indy mare Globe Trot. Global Campaign was a $250,000 yearling at the 2017 Keeneland September Sale, where he was consigned by Select Sales and purchased by Sagamore.

The victory was the second on the Saratoga card for Saez.

Louis Wright’s Inject (Frosted), who turned in an eye-opening performance in her career debut at Ellis to earn TDN Rising Star status, will try and punch her ticket to the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies with a victory in Thursday’s GIII Pocahontas S. at Churchill Downs. Let go at 7-1 for that five-furlong unveiling Aug. 15, the daughter of first-season son of Tapit came from just off the pace to win by a widening six-length margin at the wire. The $390,000 KEESEP yearling purchase is a half-sister to GI Belmont S. winner Tapwrit (Tapit).

Also a winner at first asking, Phoenix Thoroughbred’s Crazy Beautiful (Liam’s Map) got the job done going a mile over the Ellis turf July 5 before overcoming a whole mess of trouble in the Aug. 9 Debutante S. and still managing to come home a 3 3/4-length winner in a TDN Rising Star-earning performance.

Rounding out the TDN Rising Star triumvirate is Girl Daddy (Uncle Mo), who made short work of her rivals while going six panels at Ellis July 24. In the irons that day was Joe Talamo, who led the jockey standings at the recently concluded Ellis summer meeting, gets the call in the Pocahontas.

Russell Welch’s American Grace (American Pharoah) was favored for her career bow going seven furlongs at Ellis Aug. 7 and did not disappoint, coming home a 2 1/2 length winner. Sharpened with a four-furlong move in :48 flat at Churchill Aug, 28, the Larry Jones trainee reunites with Gabe Saez in this stakes debut.

With his Kentucky Derby gear still being constructed, South Bend took to the track with his usual Bill Mott saddle towel as he galloped during the special 7:30 a.m. training session for Oaks and Derby horses at Churchill Downs.

A late entrant to the Derby fray, South Bend heads into Saturday's test off a fourth-place finish in the Travers Stakes (GI) at Saratoga on Aug. 8. Though he is winless in eight starts this year, the bay colt has flashed potential, most notably running second in the Ohio Derby (GIII) June 27 while still in the barn of his prior trainer Stanley Hough.

“He's a very consistent horse, if you look at all his races and he tries hard every time,” said Kenny McCarthy, Mott's assistant. “His Travers race was certainly not a bad race. He obviously needs to move forward off of that race but he seems to like this track here. We've seen over the years that some horses look like a cinch coming in but they couldn't get it done.”

<ins data-revive-zoneid=172 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

<ins data-revive-zoneid=173 data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>
Campaigned by Sagamore Farm through his first 11 starts, including a victory in the Street Sense last fall at Churchill Downs, South Bend was acquired prior to the Travers by a partnership group that includes Gary Barber, Adam Wachtel, Peter Deutsch and Leonard Schleifer of Pantofel Stable.

“He was previously with Stanley so he's trained over this track (Churchill Downs) many times,” McCarthy added. “This horse, it was a bit of a last-minute decision to go into the race but having said that, I think initially when the horse was purchased, that might have been in the back of their minds to try and get themselves a Derby horse. Obviously with the defection of Art Collector, they figured let's take a shot. Here's to longshots!”

South Bend is listed at 50-1 on the Kentucky Derby morning line, and will break from post position eight.

Thanks to the National Turfwriters and Broadcasters Association (NTWAB), which has assembled a group of pool reporters providing independent reporting to members unable to be on the Churchill Downs grounds this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.
