Gun Runner, the runaway leading second-crop sire in North America, will be available to cover a limited book of mares on Southern Hemisphere time in 2022, Three Chimneys has announced.

The son of Candy Ride (Arg) will be available to breeders in the Southern Hemisphere at a fee of US$75,000 (AU$109,700).

Since retiring to the breeding shed in 2018, Gun Runner has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the U.S. stallion ranks and with only two crops of racing age, he is already the sire of 12 stakes winners, spearheaded by five top-flight winners including GI Preakness winner Early Voting.

Doug Cauthen, the Vice Chairman of Three Chimneys, told TDN AusNZ he believed the stallion had all the attributes to make him a successful sire in the Southern Hemisphere.

“The decision to make the stallion available to cover Southern Hemisphere time is two-fold; firstly, there have been a lot of inquiries about him and we have some matings booked already,” he said.

“Secondly, on a limited basis, we want to try to introduce him into the market because we believe he has all the potential to be a successful Southern Hemisphere (sire) as well.”

Staggering start at stud

With 53 winners from 97 starters this far, three of which have come in Japan, Gun Runner's winners-to-runners strike rate stands at 54.6 per cent, while the 12 stakes winners means he fires at a staggering 12.4 per cent for stakes winners to runners.

The 30 winners, headed by six stakes winners, led him to be North America's leading first-crop sire of 2021 by both winners and earnings in 2021, with GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Echo Zulu his leading earner.

“We have a high respect for the market there and you don't want to go in half-cocked, so we felt that now he is fully loaded to be introduced properly.,” said Cauthen. “There has been demand already and that is encouraging and shows it is the right time.”

“We want to respect breeders' opinions on what they think will work with the stallion,” he continued. “When top breeders show interest, you can give them input, but you should let them decide what will work with the stallion in the market.”

Flawless pedigree

A son of successful sire Candy Ride, Gun Runner boasts a beautiful pedigree and importantly for Australian breeders, he is free of Danehill blood.

His dam is the GII Molly Pitcher S. winner Quiet Giant, by Giant's Causeway, and she is herself a daughter of Listed scorer and top-producer Quiet Dance (Quiet American).

Gun Runner proved a dominant force on a racecourse, winning 12 of his 19 starts including six at the highest level which saw him accrue $16,037,138 in earnings.

Determination and speed

Cauthen said Gun Runner was a brilliant racehorse himself and instils similar traits within his progeny, making his offspring very popular with trainers.

“He has a great pedigree and he himself was a magnificent racehorse who had very few limits,” he said. “He could come from off the pace, he had determination and he had speed,” he said. “In his progeny, you see lovely action. They are great walkers, they're great movers and they have great minds and they want to do it; these are primary aspects for a racehorse, any horseman or trainer will tell you that and that is what he is passing on to his progeny.

“We are blessed to have him doing so well and we hope and pray it continues. We are encouraged by his talent and we feel the time is right to test out another continent–it is the right time.”

Gouverneur Morris, a multiple Grade 1-placed son of Constitution, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Haras La Pasion in Argentina for the upcoming Southern Hemisphere breeding season, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

The 4-year-old was purchased by a group of Argentine breeders including Haras La Pasion, Haras Las Racies, and Haras La Nora to stand in the country full-time. He is currently under quarantine in Miami, Fla., as he awaits export.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Gouverneur Morris retired with two wins in five career starts for earnings of $247,500. Todd Pletcher trained the colt for owners Team Valor International and WinStar Farm. He was a $600,000 purchase at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Selected Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

The colt quickly generated attention as a juvenile with a nine-length debut win in Saratoga, followed by a runner-up effort in the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland.

He came back at age three to draw off in an allowance optional claiming race at Tampa Bay Downs, setting a new track record for a mile and 40 yards in the process. Then, he moved forward on the Kentucky Derby trail with a fourth in the G1 Florida Derby, and a third in the rescheduled G1 Arkansas Derby, in what would be his final start.

Gouverneur Morris was knocked off the Derby trail last June after battling both a leg infection and colitis. He was tentatively scheduled to return to the races this spring, but it never materialized.

A pair of Eclipse Award-winning sons of Unbridled's Song will shuttle to Haras Phillipson in Uruguay for the upcoming Southern Hemisphere breeding season, in Will Take Charge and Midshipman, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

Will Take Charge, an 11-year-old son of Unbridled's Song, will ship to Haras Phillipson for the second consecutive year. He is wrapping up his seventh Northern Hemisphere season at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky., where he stood for an advertised fee of $5,000.

From four crops of racing age, Will Take Charge has sired 132 winners and he's compiled progeny earnings of more than $10.4 million. His runners are led by Grade 3 winner Will's Secret and Grade 1-placed Manny Wah. In South America, his offspring include Peruvian Group 2 winner Esidio.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

Will Take Charge earned the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male in 2013 on the strength of a campaign that included wins in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes and Clark Handicap, the G2 Rebel Stakes and Pennsylvania Derby, and the G3 Smarty Jones Stakes, along with a runner-up effort in the Breeders' Cup Classic. At four, he won the G2 Razorback Handicap and ran second in the G1 Santa Anita Handicap, Donn Handicap, and Stephen Foster Handicap.

Midshipman is a veteran of the South American breeding ranks, having previously shuttled to farms in Brazil and Chile. The 15-year-old stands at Darley America in Lexington, Ky., where he was advertised in 2021 for $7,500.

With eight crops of racing age, Midshipman has sired 310 winners with combined progeny earnings of more than $28.4 million. Domestically, his highlights at stud include Grade 2 winner Princess Warrior, and Grade 3 winners including Lady Shipman and Sassy Sienna.

Midshipman has seen his greatest success in the Southern Hemisphere, including Brazilian 2,000 Guineas winner Royal Ship, who later shipped to the U.S. and became a Grade 2 winner. Other Southern Hemisphere runners of note include Brazilian Group 1 winners Tanganyka and Tweet, as well as Chilean Group 1 winner Succeso.

Midshipman was named champion 2-year-old male of 2008, after winning that year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile and the G1 Del Mar Futurity.

Magic Wand, a mare that's competed at the highest levels in seven different countries, will be bred to Triple Crown winner Justify at Coolmore's Australia base, Racing Post reports.

A 5-year-old daughter of Galileo, Magic Wand was a €1,400,000 (US$1,562,820) purchase as a yearling, and she has carried the Coolmore colors to wins including the Group 1 MacKinnon Stakes in Australia, the G2 Ribblesdale Stakes during England's Royal Ascot meet, and the G2 Lanwades Stud Stakes in Ireland.

Magic Wand has also finished second in Grade/Group 1 competition in the U.S., France, and Hong Kong, and she ran on this year's Saudi Cup card. Her U.S. exploits included finishing second in two runnings of the G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes and last year's G1 Arlington Million, along with a third in the G1 Man o' War Stakes.

She was retired in late October after developing a foot abscess while training toward a defense of her MacKinnon Stakes win in Australia.

Justify, a 5-year-old son of Scat Daddy, is in the midst of his second Southern Hemisphere breeding season in Australia, where he stands for an advertised fee of $66,000 Australian (US$43,282).

With the Southern Hemisphere breeding season kicking off and travel clamped down on a global scale, Coolmore Australia has released an hour-long “virtual stallion parade” to show off its 2020 roster, including Triple Crown-winning shuttle stallions Justify and American Pharoah.

The video series features virtual inspections and walk videos of each stallion, along with interviews with several prominent figures within the Coolmore organization, and surrounding the careers of the individual horses.

The Coolmore staff is represented by some of its highest-ranking members, including John Magnier, M.V. Magnier, David Wachman, and James Bester.

Justify, in particular, got a spotlight during the virtual stallion parade, featuring a conversation with the aforementioned Coolmore staff discussing the 2018 Triple Crown winner, as well as trainer Bob Baffert and Ashford Stud manager Dermot Ryan.

“It's so unusual to win a Triple Crown,” John Magnier said. “People have to realize there's only been 13 of them ever, and this fella is an unbeaten Triple Crown winner. You could be talking about he could be a Northern Dancer or he could be a Sunday Silence. He could be the next big thing.

<ins data-revive-zoneid="166" data-revive-id="b284fa4ee2b53b5c0fb16aa42e76910a"></ins>

“The world will get fixed sooner than everybody thinks, and when these Justify-type animals go to the yearling sales down there, the international people are going to be interested in Justifys and things of that nature,” he continued. “The way this game is going, the people that are going to survive, I believe, are the people that have the international outlook.”

For both Justify and American Pharoah, Magnier said their underlying appeal to turf racing made them priorities to add to the stallion roster, even though neither raced on the surface themselves, because that perceived affinity for the grass opens them up to greater international success in parts of the world where turf is the dominant surface, such as Europe and Australia.

“It's probably far more likely that Justify should get grass horses than American Pharoah,” Magnier said. “That was the reason that we just had to have him. He shouted for grass, really, and all of his racing was done on the dirt.”

American Pharoah, the winner of the 2015 Triple Crown, has already proven Coolmore's turf hunch to be true, as the sire of prominent grass runners including 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Four Wheel Drive. However, Magnier was confident the surface success would balance itself out over time.

“It's only a matter of time before American Pharoah will get a good dirt horse,” he said. “He's had some success in Japan.”

Baffert echoed Magnier's sentiment that Justify could have had it in him to compete on the turf, if he had been called on to do so.

“People have always asked me, 'You need to bring a horse to Ascot,'” Baffert said. “Now, that would have been the horse to take to Ascot. I think he would have been just phenomenal. But, the really great ones, they can run on anything…He brought his track with him.”

Noting Justify's imposing physical and penchant for getting to the lead early, Baffert said Justify probably could have succeeded on the opposite side of the surface and distance spectrum, as well.

“I came from the Quarter Horse world, and believe me, he could have won the All American Futurity, a $2-million race,” he said. “He's that quick. He's that versatile that he's quick on his feet and just gets running really fast. I could have trained him to win an 870 [yard] race.”

Justify's first Northern Hemisphere foals are weanlings of 2020, and Ryan said they're already starting to emulate their sire in terms of their physicals.

“They have that big hip, rear end, and good hind leg,” he said. “That big ass-end, strength, that drives him. That's very dominant in nearly all of them, that rear end and muscle behind.”

The full virtual stallion parade video can be found below, but the landing page to break the show out by individual stallions can be found here.

Though he started as a relatively unheralded stallion, Written Tycoon has steadily climbed to the upper echelon of Australia's sire ranks, spearheaded by 2016 Golden Slipper winner Capitalist. Written Tycoon was Australia's leading freshman sire of the 2010-11 racing season, and he was the leading 2-year-old sire in 2015-16.

Other runners of note by Written Tycoon include Group 1 winners Tycoon Tara, Music Magnate, Despatch, Booker, and La Luna Rossa.

Black Caviar, a 13-year-old mare by Bel Esprit, was named Australia's Horse of the Year and champion sprinter each year from 2011 to 2013.

Undefeated in all 25 of her career starts, Black Caviar was a three-time winner of the Group 1 Lightning Stakes, and she was twice a winner of four other Group 1 races in her home country. However, her most famous effort arguably stemmed from her voyage to England for the G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes during the Royal Ascot meeting, where she preserved her undefeated streak after a nail-biting finish.

Black Caviar's career so engulfed the imaginations of racing fans in Australia and around the world that she became the second horse in history to be named to Australia's Hall of Fame while still actively racing in 2013.

Black Caviar is still seeking her first breakout star as a broodmare, but her influence will soon spread as her first foals retire to the breeding shed, including her son Prince of Caviar, a Sebring horse who stands at Riverbank Farm in Australia.
